Jason Aaron grew up in a small town in Alabama. His cousin, Gustav Hasford, who wrote the semi-autobiographical novel The Short-Timers, on which the feature film Full Metal Jacket was based, was a large influence on Aaron. Aaron decided he wanted to write comics as a child, and though his father was skeptical when Aaron informed him of this aspiration, his mother took Aaron to drug stores, where he would purchase books from spinner racks, some of which he still owns today.

Aaron's career in comics began in 2001 when he won a Marvel Comics talent search contest with an eight-page Wolverine back-up story script. The story, which was published in Wolverine #175 (June 2002), gave him the opportunity to pitch subsequent ideas to editors.

In 2006, Aaron made a blind submission to DC/Vertigo, who published his first major work, the Vietnam War story The Other Side which was nominated for an Eisner Award for Best Miniseries, and which Aaron regards as the "second time" he broke into the industry.

Following this, Vertigo asked him to pitch other ideas, which led to the series Scalped, a creator-owned series set on the fictional Prairie Rose Indian Reservation and published by DC/Vertigo.

In 2007, Aaron wrote Ripclaw: Pilot Season for Top Cow Productions. Later that year, Marvel editor Axel Alonso, who was impressed by The Other Side and Scalped, hired Aaron to write issues of Wolverine, Black Panther and eventually, an extended run on Ghost Rider that began in April 2008. His continued work on Black Panther also included a tie-in to the company-wide crossover storyline along with a "Secret Invasion" with David Lapham in 2009.

In January 2008, he signed an exclusive contract with Marvel, though it would not affect his work on Scalped. Later that July, he wrote the Penguin issue of The Joker's Asylum.

After a 4-issue stint on Wolverine in 2007, Aaron returned to the character with the ongoing series Wolverine: Weapon X, launched to coincide with the feature film X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Aaron commented, "With Wolverine: Weapon X we'll be trying to mix things up like that from arc to arc, so the first arc is a typical sort of black ops story but the second arc will jump right into the middle of a completely different genre," In 2010, the series was relaunched once again as simply Wolverine. He followed this with his current run on Thor: God of Thunder.

Just rip out my heart already, Aaron.
This was great.

description

We are all hoping for a bit of redemption and I think some of the characters manage to find it, or a version of it, at any rate.
You know going in that there aren't going to be any happy ever afters, and I was kind of surprised that there were actually a few people left standing. On shaky legs, but standing.
The feeling that life will go on, that these characters are still making new stories in this world after we close the book, is one of the signs that I just read something amazing.

No spoilers - just read it.
Highly recommended.

"The thunder's calling our names Lincoln. You hear it? I do.

I'll race ya."
What a fantastic series. And Aaron brings it all to a fitting conclusion here. If you're a fan of shows like Deadwood or Sons of Anarchy, and other well-conceived crime dramas, definitely check this story out. I wish I could erase my memory and start over again fresh from the beginning and relive the story one more time. All of the painstaking and meticulous character development and world building pays off as each character and storyline comes to a head and converges in a dramatic resolution that will leave the Prairie Rose Reservation in flames.

I'm just really sad it's over. This comic series was so much more then a series it was a way of life. What I mean by that is you had an insight to the lives of all these people, it wasn't JUST a story. This final volume was good but with a series like this I knew I would never have enough closure. I've been reading about these people and their horrible lives and how they push forward when they have nothing to live for and now I don't get to see what happens to them anymore :( I felt the same way with "The Wire". Masterpiece of a series, story and art!

... and they all lived happily ever after.

Certainly the climax of this series was every bit as epic as expected. It almost goes off the rails. There's just a bit much of switching sides and folks who were left for dead turning out not to be so dead after all. It works for the story, but it's less crime drama and more spaghetti western. Still, all told, Scalped is a terrific story that grabs you by the eyeballs and doesn't let go. This has been one of the greatest series I've read in quite some time. Obviously, reviewing Book Five is pretty irrelevant. No sane person is going to start reading with this volume, and anyone who's read the first four isn't going to stop there regardless of what anyone says about the fifth. Writing this is an exercise in sheer futility, but, hey, that's never stopped me before. Scalped rocks! Highly recommended!

Nice conclusion to the whole series. The art is still a bit muddy at times but I think all of the major threads are resolved in a believable and satisfying way.

Scalped is a visceral tour de force into the badlands, both physically and metaphorically.

The gritty, punched up artwork accentuates the dialogue and the multi-threaded plot careens towards perdition.

There is no clear divide between the proverbial "good guys" and "bad guys". Rather each character grapples with their own inner demons in hopes of taking a right turn towards redemption.

Scalped is sublime in its execution, it doesn't shy away from dealing with harrowing issues and never seeks to dehumanise the many broken people that litter the landscape.

Scalped may start slow, there is also some uneven pacing, but that is understandable for a story that spans 60 issues, a labour of love, four years in the making.

To sum up in one word: brilliant!

(Rajko Milošević a.k.a. Gera).

Amazing way to end an amazing series.

I never imagine that I would end up loving this series as much as I do now, the reservation theme didn't appeal me THAT much at first, but Jason Aaron surprised me, making one of a hell story and incredible reliable characters, to the point of wanting to know what would happen in the end to each one of them. It's really sad that is finished, and there are no more Scalped stories, but I'm with a great satisfaction of having enjoyed such an excellent series.

I had friends who swore by this series, as well as my local comic shop guy, and Youtubers that I watch who like to talk about comics, so I was quite excited to get into this series. In fact, some of the first reviews that I read on this site before I myself starting using it were of this series. Then I found a certain review of this series that so shocked me by its forceful use of its voice and language that, for one, I had to go out and find this guy and befriend him, as I was quite impressed with this review, and two, ruining a lot of chances for me to enjoy this series, as I couldn't get his opinions out of my head. So for that, I thank you Keely.

I've grown quite fond of Aaron through my readings of him, some of his works have given me a lot of joy and fun over these last few years. Though it's quite interesting to see him at an earlier point of his career, still finding himself as a writer, sadly I find that Scalped represents some of the lesser aspects of a debut, rather than the more stronger aspects of one.

Scalped seems unsteady, unpolished, and unsure of itself. Aaron hasn't quite come into his own voice here, and seems to be borrowing (quite liberally I might add) from some of his inspirations. At once we see Ennis' influence on this series, and then Miller's and yet, we don't see the strengths of those two's most celebrated work. Aaron shares Ennis' penchant for over the top extremes, though Aaron can't quite match Ennis' skill for merging his extremes with his storytelling in a natural way until later on in the series.

Scalped seems jarring to read at times with its chaotic pacing and constantly switching around from scene A to scene B. It's one of those cases where I find that if he had a good editor on his side, assuaging his more wild tendencies and focusing him in the right direction, then the series would've had a much stronger outing when it first began. Luckily, this jarred pacing does lighten up as the series moves along, and Aaron gains some more confidence in his voice.

The central idea of Scalped is strong, and the set ups of these characters was also strong, so I suppose it's why I kept with it, to see if this potential paid off in any way and in some ways it does. I was particularly fond of the one off stories focusing on the many characters who live in 'The Rez' as it's known, getting inside their heads and seeing their motivations as to why they are the way that they are. I was particularly intrigued by the story of Red Crow, the Native activist turned crime lord, I was fascinated by the internal conflict that he struggles through as the series goes on, and I was compelled as his story went on. It shows the Aaron that I've come to know, the one who likes to muddy the waters about who is good and evil in his stories and often makes who you root for much more complicated in the process.

The series continues to improve as Aaron continues to find his stride, though its still flawed in several ways. The pacing ends up becoming more streamlined as Aaron continues to roll along, finding his voice. But he never quite gets to the heights that he would eventually when he would go to write Southern Bastards, yet we do see the signs of the later Aaron as we go along, leading to an ending that left me melancholic, but also empty. Yet, it was an ending that was rather fitting to this series: not quite at its peak, but almost.

Guera's art is also intriguing, it has the classic 'Vertigo look' in terms of its color palate and texture, but it also is rather fitting for the series, having a style that's moody while also being ugly and decadent, much like the Rez that the series takes place in. But like with Aaron's writing, I find that the art never quite reaches its full potential, I often found it off-putting and shoddy as much as it was evocative and occasionally rich.

As said before, it is quite curious to see Aaron at the beginning of his career, still in the cusp of finding his voice, still finding his way through the Rez, and seeing where the journey takes him along the way. Scalped is an incomplete work (thematically). But it does show Aaron slowly coming to his own, and giving us a hint of the greatness that Aaron would eventually prove himself to be capable of.

I just finished reading Scalped.

And I can recommend it to everybody. A journey into the heart of the Indian reservation, confronting poverty, addictions, violence and cracked up relationships. Following the genre "everybody is fucked and it will get worse" and some character arcs and personal stories are just great.

I have only two reservations against the serie: first, some plot twists and especially one are too over the top in regards to probability and not even needed. The second minus is very similar - sometimes authors have the need to rake up the body counts and number of people in fights so high it does not really work with the very, very realistic setting of the series. And it is just dumb - like fighting a man or even two would not be enough, in some scenes we go into numbers worthy of a legend.

But everything else is just great. Atmosphere, characters, unusual setting...it all fits so well together. And even if I have never been in an Indian reservation and probably never will be, the tales of poverty, social pressure and pain are very much the same.

Scalped is, hands down, my favourite series of books of all time. Each and every component that helps to build it up is just about as good as it gets for me. The quality of the writing on display here is absolutely extraordinary and each character is as entertaining as intensely complex and distinctive and just such a likeable bona fide piece of shit. Some of my favourite ever instances of drama, some of my favourite lines (hilarious and shocking), a handful of my favourite characters ever put to fiction are all contained in these books.

I read all five deluxe editions through for the second time and I can say, with all sincerity, that I loved it even more than the first time I read it through. This fifth book particularly, having now been so saturated in these characters for this punishing roller coaster of a journey of violence and depravity, left me genuinely awestruck. “FBI. You’re under arrest.” Holyyyy shiiiiiiiit.

Maybe one day I will enjoy a book more than Scalped. Maybe one day I’ll return to Scalped and not feel quite as enamoured. But that day ain’t fuckin’ today. Scalped is my favourite fuckin’ book. “Now is it just me, or do y’all Prairie-ass n*****s all smell worse than a dead dog’s ass in August?”

Scalped: The Deluxe Edition Book Five provides a gripping and satisfying conclusion to the acclaimed series. Written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by R.M. Guéra, this final volume masterfully ties up the loose ends and delivers a thrilling narrative that will leave readers captivated until the very last page.

In this volume, we see the culmination of years of storytelling as the complex web of characters and their interconnected lives converge in a dramatic showdown. Set on the fictional Prairie Rose Indian Reservation, the story follows Dashiell Bad Horse, an undercover FBI agent torn between loyalty to his community and his duty to uphold the law. As secrets unravel and tensions rise, Dashiell's allegiances are stretched to their limits, leading to a reckoning that will forever change the landscape of the reservation.

One of the greatest strengths of Scalped is its rich and deeply layered character development. Dashiell Bad Horse serves as a morally ambiguous protagonist, caught in a complicated dance between the murky lines of right and wrong. Throughout the series, we witness his transformation as he grapples with his identity, heritage, and the consequences of his actions. Aaron expertly weaves together the narratives of the various characters, exposing their vulnerabilities, desires, and motivations, showcasing the complexity of human nature.

Guéra's artwork is nothing short of extraordinary. With every stroke of his pen, he brings the gritty world of the reservation to life, immersing readers in the rawness and brutality of the environment. The intricate details and atmospheric paneling add depth to the story, enhancing the overall reading experience. Guéra's use of shadows and muted colors perfectly captures the somber tone of the series, amplifying the emotional impact of each scene.

The storytelling in this final volume is gripping and relentless. Aaron seamlessly combines elements of crime noir, westerns, and character-driven drama, creating a unique and captivating narrative. The pacing is expertly executed, with each chapter building tension and driving the plot towards its explosive climax. The dialogue is sharp and authentic, effectively capturing the vernacular and nuances of the characters, immersing readers in their world.

Without delving into spoilers, it is safe to say that Scalped: The Deluxe Edition Book Five brings all the storylines to a satisfying resolution. Aaron flawlessly ties up loose ends, as secrets are revealed, alliances are tested, and long-standing conflicts come to a head. The emotional weight of the story is keenly felt, leaving readers with a profound sense of catharsis and reflection.

For those seeking an engaging and thought-provoking read, Scalped: The Deluxe Edition Book Five is an absolute must-read. Aaron's masterful storytelling and Guéra's stunning artwork combine to create a visceral and unforgettable experience. This series is a testament to the power of comics as a medium for exploring complex themes, shining a light on marginalized communities, and pushing the boundaries of storytelling.

(Zero spoiler review)
So, almost a year after I started reading this series, I've finally finished it. This series, which was one of my first great comic book loves I fell for within this medium. It ends with a whimper, rather than a scream. Although I may have screamed in frustration once or thrice.
Truthfully, the writing on the wall could be seen as I worked through book 3. I had stopped reading at book 2 about a year ago, having run out of material at the time, learning that they were not going to keep printing the softcovers. I waited almost a year, hoping for an omnibus announcement, though knowing if anything, it would likely be a bloody compendium. So I began to track down the hardcovers, and was able to finish reading. The brilliance of books 1 & 2 never materialised thereafter. What we got was a slow and steady decline in quality across the board. Dialogue, characters, hell even art to a certain extent was not what it had once been. Those first 20 issues may have been a high bar to reach, but this ending was so aimless, so lost, so far from what it was, to make books 1 & 2 seem like a beautiful figment of my imagination. I've said it before, but everything I loved initially about this series has been watered down or straight up butchered. Characters, dialogue, plotting, pacing. All thrown to the dogs. Dash, ruined. Nitz, ruined. Red Crow, ruined. Dino, ruined. Few escape out of this final arc with their origins and dignity in tact. Maybe Carol and Granny, although the two of them are little more than an afterthought here, appearing for a few pages and then ignominiously disappearing. It hurts to think back to what these characters were, and how much I cared for them and their world. Whilst this final arc wasn't a disastrous failure by any means, it was to me, in how far it has fallen. From magnificence to stark mediocrity. Aa nose dive this impressive deserves are far more detailed dissection, but I just can't bring myself to do it right now. I'm just to disappointed. If I knew all this, would I still have read this series... I don't know. Says it all, really. 3/5

Scalped Deluxe Edition Book 5! The final volume of this great Native American crime noir. The book starts of with a one-shot about scalping, and it's significance during the American Indian War in the 1800's. Then we get back to Dash, who had his mouth shut with wires after his tussle with Catcher. Seeing his chance while Red Crow is in his reformative ways, he brings up Officer Falls Down with him to the FBI, and bring law down onto the rez, and on Red Crow himself. However, the lost of a ruling power on the Prairie Rose led to anarchy, with Red Crow's old employees (being led by Dino Poor Bear)now wanting a nibble at their old employer's riches. Catcher proves to be harder to deal with as all of them meet for the last time in the end.

A stand off between Catcher, Red Crow, and Dash.

A rez now left in shambles after the chief was brought down.

Thing are not easy in the rez, and as this whole story shows, things will never be easy. It is this kind of plot that makes a story relatable. and great, even if the views being told are not the sunshine-up-your-ass, happily-ever-after kind. A bit of mysticism there at the end, but everything's wholly grounded. Solid work from Jason Aaron and R.M. Guera! Definitely up there on the list of great graphic novels like 100 Bullets and Y: The Last Man!

Sjajan serijal.

And now, we are leaving the Prairie Rose Reservation. These 60 issues have been an incredible journey, one of the best comics reading experiences Ive had or am ever likely to have. The final issue of Scalped brings Aaron and Guerra's magnum opus to a fitting and bloody conclusion, which provides some satisfying story resolutions, but ultimately leaves things on the reservation pretty much the same as they were in the first issue. Endings are really hard and the last issue falls a little short of being a perfect cherry on top a wonderful series. Still, I can't wait to go back and reread the entire series in its entirety. We'll always have the tension of those early arcs with Diesel threatening to blow Dash's cover, the brutality of that one-armed Hmong dude, that incredible issue with the old couple, Dash and Carol standing on a snow-covered road with her struggling to tell him about her pregnancy, the tragic story of Shunka, the shoot-out between Dash and Catcher in the cab of a pickup. This series is well worth your time.

And thus ends the saga of Scalped; a graphic novel that I enjoyed like no other.
Aaron and Guera crafted together a world full of deceit, despair and desperation, but also of humility, sacrifice and hope. They showed us what little it takes to hit rock bottom, and what it takes to bring yourself back up again.
I loved how I cared what happened to every single protagonist, how I was willing them to make different choices, but I also understood that life on the Rez was never that simple. The Rez is a character in itself, dragging everyone down into its harsh depths.
Scalped is why I love comics, where words and art marry perfectly to create a world that cannot be properly experienced in another medium.

Wszelkie zachwyty i nagrody zasłużone.
