Victoria Kann is the award-winning illustrator and author of the picture book series featuring the whimsical and effervescent character Pinkalicious. Victoria coauthored and illustrated the first two books, Pinkalicious and Purplicious. In addition, she cowrote Pinkalicious: The Musical and wrote and illustrated the #1 New York Times bestsellers Goldilicious and Silverlicious. Currently she is working on several more books about the adventures and antics of Pinkalicious. You can visit her online at www.thinkpinkalicious.com.
If your children have seen Pinkalicious on television you already know that she is the featured child of the Pinkerton family. (The others are her parents and brother.) Pinkalicious is an ordinary young girl who has some extraordinary adventures and this book has 12 of them.
I have been mentally challenged (and a bit abused) with my granddaughters’ pink obsessions. So I was prepared to push back when the four year old pulled this from the library shelf. I am a very soft-touch as a grandfather so we added it to the pile and lugged it home. Then came the pleasant surprise. There was no problem with attention span or the substance of most of these pieces.
My favorite was “Pinkalicious: Story Time” where Pinkalicious (I am SO tired of that name!) goes to the book fair hoping to meet Princess Plum, whose stories she has devoured. Instead of the princess, she discovers that the author is a bearded middle-age man. “But how can you write about being a magic princess if you aren’t one?” She asks. In their conversation he shares with her the observation that: “When you’re an author, you can tell all sorts of stories….Stories can be about anyone or anything you want. Just use your imangination.”
And so she does, and, once started, Pinkalicious finds a joy in writing stories both real and imaginary.
Pinkalicious creator Victoria Kann presents twelve stories featuring her popular character in this anthology, eight of them originally published as part of the I Can Read early-reader series, and four of them as paperback picture-books. Selections include:
Pinkalicious: Cherry Blossom, in which Pinkalicious gets some unexpected help, when learning to fly a kite for the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival.
Pinkalicious: Fashion Fun, which sees Pinkalicious and her friends creating their own fashion show during a play-date, making their outfits out of items found around the house.
Pinkalicious and the Pink Parakeet, which follows Pinkalicious and her classmates on a trip to the birdhouse at the zoo, during which they must rescue a very special bird.
Pinkalicious and the Sick Day, in which Pinkalicious is rewarded for her perfect attendance at school by being made honorary Principal, only to become sick on the big day.
Pinkalicious: Story Time, in which Pinkalicious meets the author of her favorite books, and is inspired to start writing herself.
Pinkalicious: Tutu-rrific, which sees Pinkalicious accidentally joining the advanced class, on her first day at ballet school.
Pinkalicious and Planet Pink, in which Pinkalicious and her brother Peter think that an alien from Planet Pink has invaded their home one night, only to discover that it is actually a kitten.
Pinkalicious: School Lunch, in which Pinkalicious' efforts to eat the lunch provided at school don't go quite as planned...
Pinkalicious and the Little Butterfly, in which Pinkalicious becomes attached to one of her classroom's caterpillars, following his progress as he becomes a butterfly.
And finally, Pinkalicious: Apples, Apples, Apples!, which sees the whole Pinkerton family going to the orchard for some apple-picking time, and then figuring out what to do with their bounty afterward.
As always, with these Pinkalicious books (which I am reading for a work-related project), I was less than impressed. I find the writing quite uninspiring, and the artwork flat and unappealing. I did like that Kann properly attributed the Cherry Blossom Festival in her first story to Japan, as I think there was some cultural confusion in her Pinkalicious: Soccer Star around this subject. Leaving that aside, there isn't much I can say about this one, other than that it is likely to appeal to determined fans of the character.
Personally, I find that the stories teach something along the way, but always add a touch of something unbelievable that would otherwise be very relatable to a child that loses a bit of the charm, though for small kids, that bit of unbelievable is probably magic and far more interesting than if it stayed true to something they could recognize and experience themselves. It was a short phase, but for the time that my daughter loved Pinkalicious, she enjoyed this collection. Stories included are:
Meet the Characters Pinkalicious: Cherry Blossom Pinkalicious: Fashion Fun Pinkalicious and the Pink Parakeet Pinkalicicous and the Sick Day Pinkalicious: Story Time Pinkalicious and Planet Pink Pinkalicious: The Royal Tea Party Pinkalicious: School Lunch Pinkalicious and the Little Butterfly Pinkalicious and Aqua, the Mini-Mermaid Pinkalicious: Apples, Apples, Apples!

My niece loves all things pink and purple and girly. I thought it was time to introduce her to Pinkalicious and she loved this collection. It was fun to share and she had a blast.
