Errant Tides

Rate this book
If lies are poison, then truth is the hammer. Both have the capacity to kill, but revelation shatters wills, ways of life, and history itself.

Gouged by doubt, even the purest hearts are tested.

A sentinel wonders if faith is a useless construct. For a priestess, honor becomes a shackle. A pirate questions tradition. And despite good intentions, a god may have to embrace the darkness to survive.

When duty clashes with morality, there is no middle ground. Gods and mortals alike must choose or be swept up in the undertow.

The Breadth Key Cycle series begins with a bang! Revisiting the world first introduced in the prequel, Skeins Unfurled, Vanderbilt shows how things have changed in the intervening centuries bringing us to the present day of this novel.

A conspiracy against the heir to the Dell, leads to the second in command, Invidia, at his temple finding herself in the outside world. Determined to serve her god by protecting an ancient tome, she soon finds herself taken in by Drow pirates. The pirates themselves have their own conspiracies and problems they must navigate through. Between her God trying to fight the conspiracy where he lives and navigate the political climate there, the attempts to root out the situation where his temple is, and the situation Invidia is caught up in with the pirates there are a lot of elements in play which make for a grand adventure.

In addition to all that, we get insight into how the angels, led by Lleu, who serve the god Freyr are doing now that his interests are elsewhere. This isn't helped at all as Freyr's forces are under threat of the god Tyr and his forces, as established in Skeins Unfurled. The increasing lack of communication with their creator Freyr and the being on alert in case Tyr's forces show up, combined with maintaining their own lives drives some to take more aggressive steps. How that plays out showcases once again Vanderbilt's ability to combine numerous mythologies and religions into one work.

By the novel's end, there has been a lot achieved and a lot of changes which have tested everybody involved. They have survived betrayals, conspiracies, and the deaths of those they care for. It's a long read but it keeps you on the edge of your eat throughout with fantastic pacing and complex characters and plotting. I'm anxious to see how the rest of the series builds from here.
