I found that this system works and I feel better since I began doing what the author suggests. I did it before I read about it in this very readable book.

Richard Brown shows how to lose weight and heal your body with fasting. He tells us that among many benefits, fasting at times helps us become more circumspect about food. As my daughter told my wife and me: “Most people live to eat. You eat to live.”

The short helpful book has five chapters: what intermittent fasting is, how it affects weight, how water helps reduce weight, the special problems of women, and a conclusion.

Intermittent fasting is, in essence, alternating feast and famine. Eat all you like during the feasting, but drink only water during the fast. He explains many things: why it works, that it is a practice that existed in many cultures and religions for centuries, we are not depriving out bodies of necessary nutrients, the science behind the idea, and much more.

He describes various ways that this can be done and he shows that it is easy to do the fast without any pain. For example: There is the 16-hour fast where the faster does not eat breakfast. Skipping other meals from time to time, such as lunch.

(My wife and I skip one supper every week. We do not eat all we want during the “feasting period.” We stop eating before we are “full” because the body takes twenty minutes after eating to register that it is full. We often feel a little hungry when we stop eating, but this hunger disappears in twenty minutes.)

Intermittent Fasting (IF) is a hot topic and a simple search will bring up scores of books devoted to it. The system is not new to me. With a deep interest in health, diet and physical fitness, I have used some form of short-term fasting for 45 years. I agree with the potential benefits and, actually, feeling hungry has never been a problem, nor have I ever felt dizzy or unwell during a fast. So, in short, I did not need convincing, and I was already familiar with a lot of the basic concepts.

This book has validity in that it sets out the principles, details different ways of integrating controlled fasting into your daily routine, and attempts to explain the science behind it. However, it is poorly organized and contains an unacceptable amount of bad grammar and spelling errors. I usually have great tolerance for the occasional typo, but this book really tested my patience. Curiously, some parts were fine, and then there would be whole sections absolutely riddled with typos and seemingly written in a different style.

Also the repetition! I won't say “stuffing” because it's possible that the author felt that drilling the same message over and over helped to make it more memorable, but there are limits. After stating that, “Counting саlоriеѕ iѕ unnecessary on intermittent fаѕting...” the author then launches into one of the most chaotic would-be explanations I've ever come across. Another quote: “Now that уоu hаvе set up уоur еаting / fаѕting ѕсhеdulе, it's time to figure out how mаnу саlоriеѕ, fat, саrbоhуdrаtеѕ and protein you will be eating. I realize that this might ѕееm оvеrwhеlming at first, with all the mаth, but once уоu initially establish уоur rеԛuirеmеntѕ, it's rеаllу ԛuitе easy and routine.” Yes, not only are we supposed to count calories, but also calculate fat, proteins and carbohydrates expressed in grams!

It would make sense if the book offered detailed calorie charts and other basic nutritional information, but it doesn't. That bit is just thrown in there for you and me to figure out using other sources. Similarly, there is a “sample workout routine” which is absolutely laughable in its random inadequacy. In my opinion, it's not a good idea to discuss stuff you know nothing about.

In conclusion, while this book might reassure some people that missing a few meals is not going to kill them and might perhaps serve as an introduction to the structured concepts of IF, I feel that the execution is poor and, with so many other books available, it would not be my first choice. The reality is that losing weight is achievable with a sensible combination of eating less, exercising more and making good food choices. One can make the whole thing sound as complicated as possible, but it doesn't need to be.

This approach to intermittent fasting is excellent! The author has a way of breaking things down so that it is very practical which makes it super easy to incorporate into your daily life. Things like this should be handled not as a diet, but as a lifestyle change and the author does a great job in doing just that. The concepts are broken down in a way that's easy to read and is very informative. It took me a long time to realize that the cheapest and most effective diet in the world was free all along!

I was very interested in this book. Alot of great information. Definately will be recommending it to my weight loss group.
