The Division #1

Premonition

Rate this book
When Riley heads off to boarding school for a summer work-study program, she knows it'll be demanding. What she doesn't expect? To be thrust into an intense physical training program described as special, exclusive and worst of all--top-secret. She signed up for tuition assistance, not to be held in a secret government facility for boot camp...

Welcome to The Division, the government agency that's so classified, most United States senators have never heard of it.

The Division wants Riley bad, but she can't figure out why. Skeptical of what she's being told, Riley's determined to uncover the truth. Boot camp is intense, physically and mentally draining. The upside? One of her new teammates is the cutest boy ever. Watching Finn hit the gym wearing a tank top doesn't suck--although sometimes his brooding attitude does. But when training forces Riley to confront her tragic past, even Finn's big biceps aren't enough to make her want to stay...

Beware: The Division isn't something you just walk away from. You better run.

Riley realizes her capabilities and strengths are greater than she'd ever imagined. But she also learns she wasn't just chosen for this special program...

She was made for it.

Premonition was a cool read, but once again, I can’t say that it’s original. It kind of borrows ideas from a bunch of different places like X-Men and Divergent. This isn’t to say it’s bad, I liked those books and I enjoyed this story, but it kind of feels like it has all been done before.

I the major flaw in this book is that it feels as if it is missing a climax. There were events that happen, sure, but when it ended I found myself surprised that it was over already. Obviously this is going to be a series, but they probably should have combined this book and the next so that there is a big climax. It just feels as if I got an introduction to this world and the characters that will be contained in the series.

As for the characters, they were alright. Riley kind of annoyed me at times, as she wouldn’t believe things that were happening right in front of her face and she needed everything spelled out for her. Plus the constant babble on how hot she found Finn. Biceps, biceps, biceps. Okay, I get the picture. You like his freaking biceps. That doesn’t really make me feel the romance. Do you notice anything else about the guy? Jeez. At times I found myself more drawn to Josh as a love interest with his actions over Finn and his stupid biceps.

I do have to say that I am a total sucker for all things about superpowers, so it really isn’t the complete fault of this book that it didn’t feel fresh to me. But I feel as if the books are always about the person who is telekinetic. Why can’t I get to read a book from the telepath’s point of view? Now that would be really cool. Basically I feel like it’s been done before and this premise needs a better angle.

(Small spoiler alert.)

Now I am kind of jealous because I would give anything to have a hallucination where I got to see my dead loved one’s just one last time. Thinking about that and one of the scenes in this book nearly made me cry. The writing was great in order to invoke such a raw emotion from me.

This was so insanely underwhelming I cannot even fathom it. It should NOT be compared to Divergent OR Hunger Games.

The premise seems like such a great idea and something that would be action packed and fast paced. Instead this book was wicked slow and lacked any real action () And the major "fight scene" is the dumbest of it all. There is literally no fight to it.

Don't go in expecting anything other than a high school drama with some seriously wasted talents.
Awesome premise, horrible execution.

The summary pretty much sums up the book. The story is action packed with lots of questions and answers sprinkled along on Riley’s journey.

Riley’s mother is an alcoholic. It started after her sister and father died in an automobile accident. Riley is extremely bright and got into what she thought was a boarding school. It was a front for The Division, a secret government group that trains these kids with “gifts” to fight terrorism on American soil. At first Riley thinks they are all crazy but then she finds her own gift. But with each day comes more knowledge of what is going on and now she can’t leave. She is owned by the government.

This first book of the series is well written, it’s believable. As the reader, we are like Riley, mostly clueless and given pieces of information at a time. It keeps you wanting to read more, find out more. There is lots of action, a sprinkle of romance, embarrassment for Riley, and a kick butt team of teenagers with different gifts.

My only negative is that the summary does sum it up. There is very little in way of spoilers since the discovery of who she is is in the summary. It only leads up to that moment. Of course, now I want to know what are they going to do next and how are they going to help stop terrorism and try to be the individual self that they each are when the government knows everything about them and where they are and their emotions!

If you like action, science fiction, government conspiracies, teens with powers, a little romance, broken families, and nonstop physical and mental training then this might be for you.

never read this author before but the premise of the book sounded interesting. so glad I read it. though not horror was so darn science fiction-ish and an awesome read. Absolutely loved it. Everything about it was very cool. the plot, the characters, their abilities. just a wonderful, wonderful read. bought the rest in the series, so far, but as I've mentioned before I can't read them back to back. Knowing this book was so awesome, I know I can pick up the next one without a problem.

do yourself a favor, read this book.

Premonition ( Division #1 )
By Leigh Walker.

Review in short. For those of you who don't read long-winded reviews.
Excellent! Loved it! Super read and Book two is even better!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. We meet some fantastic characters in this action-packed story.
Riley is a completely loveable character. The book starts off a bit on the slow side so for a few of you it may take a few chapters before you hit the wow factor! But it's story-line is excellent.

Riley is an excellent character and very easy to like. I love her position in the book. We then get introduced to Finn and the group who are all very likable.
The story has lots of action. There are lots of questions and they do get answered.
I don't want to give anything away or any spoilers so I'm not going to write a long review.

Leigh Walkers writing style is fab! Easy to read and follow. I glad to have found another brilliant Author. I have already read Book Two which was also brilliant. Intuition ( The Division Series book #2 )

I received this through netgalley and This book defiantly deserves five stars it has all the makings of my kind of favorite book! 1- great cover 2- easy smooth, and quick read. 3- I love when there are a group of teens in a book and not everything is just focused on one character yes shes the main character but the author lets it be known that all of them are a team. 4- a little romance never hurt anyone! 5- I would love to see this book in theaters I loved the action and could picture everything I was reading. 6- Lastly and my biggest reason I cant wait to read the next book!!!!!

TLDR: This is generic YA sci-fi at its mildest, and also feels like only half of a book.

Ohhhhhh boy. I love me some general,average-tier YA genre fiction with romantic elements, don't get me wrong, but Premonition was a tough one to get through. (Honestly, I largely finished it because I was on a plane and couldn't grab anything else...though I suppose I didn't switch over to a movie, so maybe that counts for something.)

Premonition takes place at a break-neck speed, feeling quite short, but frustrating nonetheless. Riley is rushed from her troubled home, where memories of her dead father and sister drive her mother to alcohol abuse, to her new (locally-situated) boarding school. She stays there for about...two nights? Before she's shuffled off to a military facility for her "work study program" that turns out to be a labor camp where specially-abled teens are trained to work for a secret government/military squad. The kids, including Riley, are the product of some kind of genetic experimentation program, and all their parents were in on it, including Riley's.

Riley expresses frustration at her lack of ability to take control over her situation, but at the same time refuses to actually try and do anything differently because of a hot guy. Granted, it's been a while since I was a teenager, but no guy was so hot that I would've said "well guess I should give this super sketchy supposedly military operation a go" personally, but...okay.

As you might expect, Riley turns out to be the member withone of the greatest powers, though she hasn't had the years of training her teammates have so she can't really harness it fully. She starts out on the wrong foot with most of her classmates, including the hot guy (Finn, a psychic) and the one who turns into her best friend (Emma, a seer), both of whom are weird and rude. Everyone is super impatient with her to catch up to them about their bizarre government program without being willing to try and tell her anything about it, and I kind of wanted them all to die in a fire, except the one nice guy whose power I've already forgotten.

So here's the kicker (and also where I get into the ACTUAL spoilers, since the above is pretty much on the back of the book): there's no real climax or action in this book, despite the sci-fi and military setup. Here's what you get:

Thank you to YA Reads Blog Tours and author Leigh Walker for providing me with a copy of this in exchange for an honest review!

Find this review and more on my blog The Rest Is Still Unwritten!

Premonition is author Leigh Walker’s debut novel and is a mysterious sci-fi tale that draws readers into an intriguing and enigmatic story seeped in intrigue and blended with action, possibility and a small hint of romance.

Riley Payne is heading off to a summer work program before beginning her new scholarship at a prestigious boarding school. Wanting to escape her inebriated mother and the pain of losing her father and sister, Riley is hoping her education will help shape her future. What she isn’t expecting is to be drafted into a secret government organisation known as The Division that trains and deploys elite individuals to protect America from both home grown and international terrorism. The Division is adamant they want Riley, but Riley isn’t so sure—not understanding what she has to offer. Fighting her uncertainty as well as her growing attraction to her handsome and moody teammate Finn, Riley must decide whether she can trust The Division or if the mysterious organisation is keeping secrets from her for nefarious reasons.

Kicking off her debut series, Leigh Walker’s novel Premonition is an easy and enjoyable reading experience. Unfolding through the eyes of Riley Payne, Premonition is a sci-fi tale with plenty of mysterious elements that will definitely keep readers plodding along, keen to discover its secrets. Walker sets up the beginning of what I’m hoping will be an action packed saga with the beginning threads of a driven division of people with powerful abilities.

On the whole I did like our main character Riley, although I feel like she also has a lot of potential for growth. We haven’t even unlocked the smallest amount of what she can do and I can only anticipate where Leigh Walker plans to take her. As our main character she was easy enough to follow and I like the budding relationships she has with many of the other characters in the novel including Emma, Josh and of course Finn.

Premonition was a decent science fiction read and I think the series has a lot of potential. Leigh Walker includes a fair amount of action and budding friendships to keep you eager to see what happens next and the mystery surrounding Riley and the Division are bound to leave you keen to see what happens in the next novel!

I loved every minute of this book. It was a perfect balance of action, unexpected twists, and a little bit of teenage romance. If you enjoy a good government secret agency novel, some fantasy, sci-fi and even YA, I recommend this book for you.

I read this book faster than I expected. It is fast paced and keeps you intrigued throughout, always willing you to read one more page, and we all know how one more page turns into one more chapter.

I was not sure what to expect, I did not expect to love this book as much as I did. It has been a while since I have not wanted to put a book down. Following Riley’s journey was an exciting adventure. I connected with her as a character on a personal level, and for me that is always a sign of a good read. She is strong, but not flawless, making her a realistic and relatable character. I find Finn endearing. Although most of the characters have a less pleasant introduction, they do end up growing on you.

I love how Riley always asks questions. As Riley learns more about herself and her past, the reader learns alongside her. She questions authority, which is a sure sign of a strong character.

Its difficult not to give too much away, so all I can say is that this book was exciting, fun and those unexpected twists I mentioned earlier will definitely keep you intrigued.

I cant wait to go out and get the next book. The sequels, Intuition (The Division Series Book 2) is already available, and the third book is expected to be published in January 2018.

I was given an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Riley ,who describes herself as a grade-A geek, has set her sights on going to Hollingsworth Boarding School to escape the troubles of her life at home. She signs up for their summer work-study program in which she ends up going to a top secret military government training facility called The Division. No one will answer her questions at first but the longer Riley stays the more she finds out about who she really is and what she’s capable of.

Throughout the book I got the sense that Riley was looking for where she belonged. She didn’t have friends and her mom was always drunk. Her dad and sister passed away and with that she also felt lonely. After being at The Division for awhile it seems like she finally found a place where she belongs. Riley feels loyal to the members of her team who she also considers her friends now. At first she wanted to leave but the more she stays the more she’s able to uncover it’s almost never ending information dumps at this point lol every time something is revealed something else is popping up on the horizon! At various points in the book I just wanted them to sit Riley down and just spill it all at once but they never would. I also think she’s sticking around The Division for Finn. They seem cute together so I’m interested to see how that goes in Book 2 along with finding out more about The Division itself and what it’s all really about.

Riley a seventeen year old girl just wants to get away from home and her mother. Ever since they lost her father and sister in a car wreck her mother drinks all the time so she can cope with losing them. Riley just wants to get away from it all so she signs up to go to a boarding school with a full scholarship and a work study program during the summer to help pay her tuition.

Riley is in for a shock when she realizes that the work study program is not exactly what it seems. No the work study program is more like a boot camp. Riley has been recruited by the United States government into a program that is called The Division, a top secret government agency.

Riley is very confused and has lots of questions as to why the government wants her and will not stop until she has her answers. Riley can be very demanding and annoying when she wants to know something. Riley is very inquisitive person.

When Riley first arrives at the facility she has a hard time making friends and as with her whole life and thinks no one likes her. But things do start to turn around for her when she gets to know everyone better and realizes they must work as a team. Everything especially starts to turn around when she lays eyes on the cutest boy ever, Finn.

Once I delved into Premonition I couldn’t put it down it didn’t take but a few hours to read. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough wanting to know what was going to happen next. I wanted to know what questions Riley was asking next. But I was right there with Riley the whole time wanting answers to the same questions. I love reading books like this that brings you into the heart of the book and you forget everything that is going on around you and you lose track of the outside world for a few hours. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. Where is Riley, Finn, Emma and everyone else taking us next?

I would recommend Premonition to anyone who loves reading about top secret government projects where kids are recruited to be a solider or science fiction books in general. Hey if you like these type of things then you will love Premonition.

Riley lives with her mom who is drunk when she isn't working. Her father and sister were killed in a car accident. Riley has applied to a private school for her senior year. She has applied for work study during the summer to earn her tuition. The night before Riley is to leave for school, her mom says to her "don't be a sheep." What does her mom mean by that? Riley gets to school and then hustled to a place where she will be attending boot camp for "The Division." Riley has questions but doesn't get answers as fast as she wants. Why? Why is she doing all this physical training? Why are there all these tests? Will Riley ever get all the answers she wants and needs?

In this action packed novel, I identified with Riley wanting answers to her questions. I felt her confusion and emotions that she went through. There is romance and some violence in the story. It is a great start to the series the author is going to write. I look forward to reading the next book. Read and enjoy!

I really enjoyed this book but, wow, it challenges your suspension of disbelief. Answers are sparingly given throughout the book, not surprising as it drives the suspense. It just drove me crazy in the beginning of the book. There is just absolutely no way I can believe that they would make her think she is going to garden for a summer-work job and just trick her into going into a unknown undercover government anti-terrorist team. It is too big a stretch. I just kept telling myself to go with it and it got easier when a lot more of the details were explained. I think it would have been more believable if she had been given a few more answers up front though. That said, I love the relationship between her and Finn and the embarrassment that comes from him being able to read her mind. Riley is a fun character as she develops her powers and comes to realize how overwhelmingly competitive she is. I thought she would be stuck as a Pollyanna but she can be ruthless at times. I also liked that the mean-girl start turned around quickly with Emma. This book was definitely fun. Just put logic aside in the beginning and enjoy it!

The Division 1: Premonition (The Division Series) Kindle Edition
by Leigh Walker
Reviewed by Angi

This is a book I didn’t see coming. I d/l as a freebie deal in my email and decided to open it and check it out while floating on the Allegheny river.

This is a very different kind of YA than I expected. I love magic and fantasy books and thought that’s what I was getting into. What I got was a very different kind of love story. There is the supernatural storyline but also mystery. There are so many questions throughout and the author does an amazing job and not revealing anything before she's ready for you to know it. That is such a rarity in this type of story. It leaves you wanting more and though there are answers there are not enough answers to satisfy the reader's curiosity. The whole way through the book you are finding out what's going on right along with the main heroine. Speaking of her she is one that asks so many questions she could become an annoying character however the author does it in a way that makes her real and relatable.

I give this a 5 star. But reader beware… you are going to need book two because it leaves you needing to know!

Wow, this book was surprising in all the right ways. It's an engaging and unique story with characters that I cared about and that had me turning pages just as quickly as possible. I loved Riley and felt invested in her story - so much so that I'm already looking forward to the next book in the series. Be assured, this novel is a complete story that is a stand alone novel, however, I loved the premise so much that I'm curious what the characters will experience next.

Fans of the genre will love this book. As a grandma, I loved this book, but would think it's also appropriate for older YA and NA readers. My reason for saying older YA is because there is some violence in the book, but it pales compared to the amount in many YA books. Additionally, this might be the first book I've read in years without a single swear word in it...very refreshing.

I can't wait to see what the author writes next - she is definitely an author to watch and I look forward to her future books.

I received a copy through NetGalley as an ebook ARC.

It was a decent enough book and something I can recommend as a read especially for young adults. However, this is not a young adult read that I will probably continue with the series. The premise is nice but how the story evolves just doesn't move me and seems very ridiculous at times. I mean how they handled certain situations in the book just didn't make sense to me. It wasn't bad but I think it could have been better especially with the summary. Maybe I expected to much.

The speed is a little to slow for me. It annoyed me that all the characters knew what was going on except Riley and that some of those who knew what was going on still didn't know everything. However, they were fine with that because it was for a good cause of saving the world. Which they had been apart of it longer so I don't know I just wasn't moved much by this book.

A Great start to a new series. I love these type of books and I really enjoyed Leigh Walker's writing style. I loved all the characters, the only thing that bothered me was all the questions that Riley asked in the beginning, it was a bit to much, luckily it was only in the beginning. I enjoy discovering with Riley how and what the Division is and what it does. I love all the different powers given to the different characters and what they can do with it. There surely is some that I also want to have. I look forward to the next book in the series.
I would recommend this book to YA readers as well as fantasy/Psi fi readers, this will be right up your alley.

Some spoilers.

This was a fun gov't sci-fi. The main reason is doesn't get five stars is because I don't think anyone, not even a naive teenager, would willingly get embroiled in the govt black ops. I know she's basically taken against her will, but at the beginning it's all Uh-Huh's, Um's, and Okay's. Once Riley starts to feel as part of the team, that's when the story got good for me. I liked her developing friendship with Emma, and of course, I loved Finn. I didn't like all the cloak and dagger Cranston and "the management" throws at these teens who had no choice in getting enlisted and "activated" but I liked the teamwork, and how the loyalty is explained at the end. Will definitely go download the next book now :)

I wanted to like this book and usually look forward to teen trials, special abilities and the added bonus of a covert government agency twist which I don't usually read or associate with YA. Sadly, I found it slow-paced (not for lack of action, but for lack of interest in following it). I am frustrated (said this before in other reviews) when the characters are all just the most gorgeous humans ever. And, the heroine just doesn't believe she is until the hottie... OMG I can't believe it, notices how hot she is. Look, this is fine for escapism, but isn't it time to lose ourselves in some regular people who are so painfully good-looking it's hard to believe they can function! It is an easy read and if you like a bit of lite "superpower" fantasy it's not a bad read and you should go for it!

One complaint, I read this book way to fast. I did not think that I would enjoy this book so much that I finished it in less than 2 hours. Once I started reading I could not stop. Riley thinks that she is going to a exclusive school only to find out she is some government secret; does she believe every thing that she is told, does she believe in every one that she meets? When Riley meets Finn she realizes not everything is as it seems there are so many secrets. Will Riley and Finn realize that can trust each other or will Riley be betrayed? Thank you NetGalley and Leigh Walker for allowing me to read and write a honest review of this book.

This is a great start to this series. Though it is weird to have Teenage Special Ops. I like Riley though it is not realistic that she doesn't swear especially at 17. This book is fast-paced and has some violence and some romance. You do a learn a lot about a Secret Government Project/Agency in this first book and at the same time they are very secretive about the Governement Agency. I found that once I picked this book up I didn't want to put it down. I was happy to see the second book was already out and that I could continue with this series right away. I look forward to more books in this series.

It was okay

There was enough mystery to keep me reading but I was not completely sucked into the story. The writing was okay and the story did have the makings of a good start. This book just introduces you to the special team of teens who have special abilities and have been activated or called to duty. This book sets the stage and plants many doubts about The Division and their true intentions. The characters act like teenagers because they are. They are immature but old enough to understand and make hard choices. I thought?the world building was not bad. I may read the next book but I don't feel an urgency to do so immediately.

3.5 star. Fairly typical YA genetically engineered by super secret gvt program teens. Nothing new but still an enjoyable read. It did bug the hell out of me how no-one would tell Riley what c was going on or about her history or why/how she was in the program even after she was in. and it also annoyed my how no-one but Kyan actively questioned the Division or their motives. I hate the whole illegal enforced draft do as we tell you, you don't need to know what or why attitude and that all these super soldiers just shrug and go ok. Was curious to read the next one but not for $7 which was the price of book 2. The ebook!

This was a really interesting read. Fast paced and a page turner it had all to held my interest. And it would have been a five star rating if I hadn't found Riley so annoying 3/4 of the story. Sure, I understand, that she had some real problems at home with her mom always being drunk and her dad and sister gone. But all she did was whining and complaining and be difficult. Aside from her though I enjoyed the book immensely and can't wait to read the next one. I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. A great beginning to a new series. It reminds me of two of my favorite YA series Archaic and Tainted Elements. Riley is a strong but needy character that's discovering what she's capable of and who she really is. I don't know how I feel about any of the other characters yet, and I'm eagerly waiting to see what the real plot will be. I'm glad I'm reading this now and it's only a few days until the release of the second book.

I knew from the first paragraph that this book should come with its own warning label. So here's mine be prepared that this book is highly addictive. You seriously won't want to put it down once you started it make you develops a crush on Flinn and feel every emotion that poor Railey goes through. I loved every second of it and I thought it was way better then the divergence series which actually bored me to the point I couldn't read it! I can not wait to read the next book #TeamFlinn
