"Life here on earth can be difficult and sometimes very unhappy, and no one who sees the confusion in our nation rapidly increasing can expect an immediate redress of trials. Thus with events here on earth so often miserable and confused, we would be constantly forlorn if we did not have the prospect of eternal joy in the hereafter." P. 158.
400 year old truth is still truth, especially based on 2500 year old truth!
Don’t judge so much by the title. The book is mainly comprised of 6 sermons on Isaiah 38 about King Hezekiah and God’s dealing with him.
The reason this is a good book is not because it’s earth shattering, but because it is sound, plain, faithful preaching from the word of God with good practical spiritual application. Prayerful and meditative reading proves spiritually nourishing and informative to any Christian.
If we had more preaching like this today, I don’t think we would have any reason to read these books of sermons from 400 years ago.
Just not a big fan - disagreed with some of his absolute statements regarding the causes of trials, felt like he contradicted himself a few times, and took some liberties as he interpreted and restated scripture in his own words.
Six short sermons on Isaiah 38:1-22, on Hezekiah's sickness by Robert Bruce. These 6 sermons are classic examples of purtian sermons, expounding upond the text and richly applying the lessons found within.
A good read although not an exhaustive book on the subject of "true" peace and rest, as it only contains Bruce's sermon on the life of King Hezekiah. In short, I expected more.
