"Did you sleep with her?"
"No."
"But you wanted to?"
"Yes."
"Are you in love with her?"
"I don't know."
“Did you sleep with her?” I asked, my eyes never leaving the phone screen.
“No.”
“But you wanted to?”
“Yes.”
“Are you in love with her?” I asked, finally looking up.
Matthew twisted the platinum band wrapped around his ring finger. “I don’t know.”
“I didn’t cheat on you, I didn’t sleep with her.” “I almost wish that you had, to get her out of your system. The fact that you want to doesn’t exactly make me feel any better.”
“You were the person who was supposed to choose me every day.”
Perhaps I was looking for any kind of human connection, which is why I’d developed closeness with Georgina. When my wife wouldn’t talk to me, Georgina would.
Georgina’s daughter, Paloma, had lost her birth parents when she was only six months old. Abandoned and in an orphanage, Georgina found her and fell in love. A wonderful story, and somehow the allure of family tugged at me, pulling me towards a mirage. It was inexcusable.
