Fantastic series

These are not your ordinary police procedurals. The plots are fresh, unusual, and meaty. The characters are well-rounded, not shallow caricatures, and the dialogue is realistic and often fun. Hodge is a terrific match for Meredith. I’m on to #4!

Meriddth & Hodge Books 1-3

Wonderful stories, lots of action, suspense and kept me on my toes with trying to keep up with the action between Meriddth and Hodge. Great chacterization. I have loved reading mysteries about English police stories for a long time, and these books leave me wanting more. I will be reading the next 3-book set so I can find out more about these two characters.

Love to hate or hate to love this series!

It’s really hard to tell if this is a series to stick with. One thing I can say is that I’m Really Very Glad that I bought this box set and not just the first title, because I really didn’t care for “Episode One” at all.

I liked that I got to meet all of the protagonists in and around the Police Station, but very few of them were truly likeable characters! It helped me to think of Meredith as Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister - Life on Mars), which made him more acceptable. However, Patsy Hodge is a total misrepresentation of a strong decisive woman! Freddie (Sherlock), is no better …

I would have given up at this point and not looked back, but I had Episodes 2 and 3 to digest, so I persevered. I’m glad that I did.

These Episodes are broken down into two (subsequently three) components:- the interpersonal relationships between the characters and, depending on how you relate to them, the crime/mystery/murder.

I truly don’t like many of the relationships (except maybe Chris and Sarah), but I find the “Day Job” narratives very interesting. Because of the various relationships and interactions, the story takes a long time to tell (I frequently found myself increasing the narration speed, just to get through it, at times). However they are interesting and innovative.

Because I listened to all 3, I’m minded to continue purchasing the Box Sets. In this format, they are exceptional value for money and they link up well. I’m sure that everything from this point onwards will be better than Episode One (which was just a mess)!

I listened to the audiobook version of this title, by Lee Beddow. His narration was pretty impressive, I do like the new DS’ and Nancy’s portrayals. To be honest, I could do with less of Meredith and Hodge’s private lives.

Nothing really to like about most of the characters, especially Meredeth. There are no apologies for sexist bully bosses. He isn't cute. He isn't forgivable. He never really grows or learns anything, and is just a pain in everyone's side. Patsy Hodge as a hero isn't really good at anything other than being at the wrong place at the right time, taking sophomoric risks, and playing a victim. I liked Linda, until her flakiness became ignorant irresponsibility. Sherlock fell into love and out of obsession like turning the tap. No depth there. The murderous villains were mostly one note street thugs or fallen cops. No depth there. But, my main problem with this triad of stories is the repetition of certain words and phrases that couldn't disappear, even in the 1300 pages. 180 kisses. 80 foreheads. 22 kissed foreheads. 140 teas. 293 coffees. These obsessions and editorial flaws made it too tedious to enjoy the stories.
