Krishna, Journey with Books "Last Call is a wonderful heartwarming story that is a perfect way to spend a relaxing day...If you are looking for a fun, light and beautifully written story - I urge you to lose yourself in this touching story." Kat Terrell, The Review Lounge Summary for Last Call: Novalee Jensen thought what happened in Vegas would stay in Vegas, but two years later, her Vegas indiscretion shows up in her bar. Novalee's fears come true as the sudden appearance of the stranger brings questions everyone wants answers to, and the secret she's kept to herself for so long is exposed. Dean Philips is on a mission to find his wife and bring her back to Nevada, all without exposing his own secrets and lies. Lies that could not only cost him his fortune, but also the woman he's yearned to know since that fateful night two years ago.
Ever since learning to read, Jennifer’s always had a love for books. There’s hardly been a time since second grade that she didn’t have a book in her hand or close by. Her love for the written word soon inspired her to write her own stories. However, it wasn’t until she found an online writing community that she took the first step and, hiding behind a penname, posted her work. After some persuasion from family and friends, Jennifer shed the penname and entered the 2010 TWCS Original Fiction Contest and won for best romance. In 2011, Jennifer published her first novel, Last Call.
When she’s not glued to her laptop making her characters’ lives as chaotic as possible, she’s chasing after her two young sons, Hayden and Nicholas, and doing the “mom thing”.
I really enjoyed this story. It kept me engaged from start to finish. The characters were well written and the story flowed nicely. I will definitely read more from this author!
I have to admit, I laughed until I cried with this one. Once again another novel that is completely down to earth, even given the fact there is a millionaire involved. I was really happy and felt fulfilled by the time I finished this novel. It was one of those eats at your heart and fall in love novels, for me at least. Jennifer Schmidt is definitely doing something right and I can only look forward to the next novel she produces because I'll certainly be in line to grab it right up.
This book is a fantastic romance! The writing was great and the book was believable (mostly). I felt a wide range of emotions while reading from happiness to anger to laughing to sadness.
I loved everyone in the book. I think Cali was my favorite with her sarcastic humor. Her banter with Novalee was hilarious and upbeat just like you would be with a friend/ family. Dean was someone you wanted to hate for all the lies but you couldn't you just felt as bad about the situation as he did. I wanted to shake him at times to make him tell the truth. Abigail did a nice job of that though so I didn't have to be too concerned in that department. Not to mention he's H.O.T. hot! Novalee was perfect IMO she is a survivor.
Some of the situations that happened between her and Dean were not as believable. I don't think that she should have been as relaxed as she was with him if she came out of a very abusive relationship. There is a scene where Dean is mopping and thinking about a situation that gets him mad. He is about to snap the mop in two. Novalee walks in and acts only worried about what caused him to be so upset. Only knowing him maybe 24hrs at the time (I'm not including Vegas' time). Her reaction was not what I would have expected.
Overall, I loved it. I would re-read again later to see if I missed anything.
Last Call is an utterly un-put-downable contemporary romance full of more passion, emotion, creativity and moments that leave you breathless than I actually thought possible in a single novel.
Schmidt crafted some absolutely amazing characters for this novel. I fell in love with Novalee right from the start. She was strong and independent but had a vulnerable side that she hid away from most people. She had some pretty deep scars as the result of a traumatic past relationship and while she hadn’t completely healed from it she also didn’t allow it to define her. Dean also had his own demons to battle and as a result was extremely empathetic towards Novalee. These two characters were able to connect on so many levels and it was the emotional connection that took this novel from a hot romance to an absolute must read for romance fans. Abby and Cali were the perfect best friends to Dean and Novalee. Their sharp wit and keep it real attitudes injected a lot of fun into the story, especially when things were taking a turn for the serious side. They supported and loved their friends unconditionally but weren’t afraid to get real with them in order to get out of the own way.
I find that too often in romance novels the dialogue is cheesy and awkward but in Last Call it was the perfect mix of snark, wit, and humor. The characters were fantastic and their conversations added another level of depth to this novel. I really appreciate when an author can get inside the heads of so many different characters and really make their personalities jump off the pages. I believe that Schmidt gave the perfect voice to each of her characters to make them come alive and give the reader someone to connect to.
Not only does Schmidt create a completely unique plot line and fantastic characters but her ability to turn up the heat in any room is unmatched! Here is an author who knows her romance, let me tell you! What made the romance ever better is that it was backed with a phenomenal story. It wasn’t just two people who got wasted in Vegas and married each other, there were several layers to the story and as each one was pulled back I was drawn further and further into the lives of Novalee and Dean.
I am completely blown away that this is Jennifer Schmidt’s debut novel. Seriously? With characters that vivid and scenes that hot where has this author been hiding? Last Call is an unbelievable sexy and emotional story that I can’t recommend highly enough to readers of the genre. I will most definitely be on the lookout for more from this author. Is it too early to declare a favorite debut author for 2012? ;)
I received a review copy of Last Call from the publisher (thank you!!!) in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Synopsis Novalee Jensen decides to take a much needed vacation to to Vegas. On her last night of vacation she meets an incredibly handsome man who shows her the time of her life. They relax, get drunk, and the next thing she knows she is naked in his hotel room and married to him. Novalee panics and flees the room before he can wake up. She returns home and continues running her bar for the next two years waiting for her secret husband to show up. Little does Novalee know, her husband is multi millionaire hotel owner Dean Phillips and he has a secret of his own. While in having a good time with Novalee, Dean gets a phone call from his attorney informing him that his grandfather had a heart attack and in order to inherit the company he has to be married. Dean does the only thing he can think of and tricks Novalee into marrying him so he can take over his grandfathers company. Two years later, Deans father takes him to court to contest the validity of Dean’s marriage. In order to win, Dean must find his wife and convince her to help him.
Formatting The story alternates between Novalee’s point of view and Dean’s point of view. The formatting works well for the story. It’s always nice to be able to see both sides of every story.
My Opinion I don’t know if I would say I loved the book, but I definitely liked the book. I loved the characters. They were funny, smart, and caring. The thing I’m not so sure about is the believability of the story. I can believe two people getting drunk and getting married in Vegas. I can believe at least one of them panicing and fleeing the next morning. What I’m not sure about is two people being able to form the relationship they have after only getting to know each other for one week. Initially, Dean is given 30 days to bring his wife to court. I would’ve liked the story better I think if the events that took place did so over the course of a month rather than a week. Other than that, I highly enjoyed the story and I would definitely recommend reading it. Its fun, flirty and a hot.
Last Call by Jennifer Schmidt is full of love, lies, heartbreak and humor. The hero’s are hilarious; the villains are ruthless. It’s a sexy adult romance, and it’s so freaking cute too. Wow, talk about some heat between the two main characters, Dean and Novalee. You can feel the connection and sexual tension radiating off the pages.
This story had an original plot. It’s not very realistic, but it’s enjoyable nonetheless.
Novalee is a very strong, independent character. She likes to be in control, and she rarely does anything wild and out of character, except for the one time she married a complete stranger in Las Vegas.
Dean has been through a lot in his life. His dying grandfather owns a chain of luxury hotels. Dean’s grandfather is leaving him his legacy, but Dean’s father thinks the hotels should go to him. Trying to keep Dean from taking over, Dean’s father adds a stipulation to the will: Dean must be married to take over the empire. Dean marries a complete stranger.
Two years later, Dean has to present his wife to a judge to prove that their marriage is real. If she doesn’t appear in court then Dean’s father will be awarded the hotels. The problem is: Dean hasn’t seen his wife since the day they were married.
With all the lies and deception, do Dean and Novalee stand a chance?
I gave Last Call by Jennifer Schmidt 3 STARS (3.5 STARS). This book is a lot of fun. I STRONGLY recommend this book to adults looking for a fun, light read.
I've had this one on the kindle for a while now and after reading it, I'm sad that I waited so long! Now, I've never been to Vegas, but I've heard of some pretty crazy things happening there. Last Call starts out in Vegas and in this case....what happens in Vegas, can majorly impact the characters lives forever!
I really liked Novalee. She's funny, sweet, and sensible. Novalee has scars from her past and it isn't easy for her to open up to guys. However, Dean is just the right guy for her. He has his own dark past, but I felt like that really made him more lovable. He had a vulnerability to him despite his powerful position. I definitely fell in love with him. These two characters really made some steamy chemistry.
The supporting characters were great as well. I loved Novalee's best friend Cali. She's sassy, funny, and has been a really great friend to Nova.
On to the smexy! Was this book hot? Yes, it was indeed. It's not erotica hot, but the sex scenes were most certainly enough to get your temperature rising. Dean is a hot guy and they both had a lot of tension to relieve. I mean, Novalee stayed faithful to Dean for TWO years. Talk about sexual frustration!
Overall, it was a fast, fun, flirty, and sexy book. I'm happy I had the opportunity to read it. Definitely check this one out!
Nov, STRONG and Loving and just amazing :D Dean, I wish you'd just open your fucking mouth and speak the shit up. Cali and her crazy dirty talk (y) Richard, Bastard.. Burn in hell.
I enjoyed this book, I liked how they spoke one thing but in their head ment another dirty lil pervy thing ;) The ending was super cute and I wish there was an epilogue :P So basically the summary gives the whole story, but the ride is pretty darn good! The sexual tension is oozing and the chemistry is fire!!
But he did kiss my booboo better. Novalee snorted when her cell rang five seconds later. “You’d better not be talking about that Yogi Bear stuffed animal collection you have,” Cali threatened. “And by ‘booboo’ you had better mean ‘hoo-hah.’ ”
“Honest-to-god sleeping, Abigail. Just me, my pillow, and blanket. Best threesome I’ve had in a while.”
“We’ll never know if you don’t put down the booze, now will we?” Dean lifted his eyes and said, “I haven’t touched a drop.” “And I just seduced the pope,” she retorted. Dean chuckled, amazed she could deliver the line with such a straight face. “Did you rock his world as well as his little go-cart?”
"She didn’t have to look to know his eyes were now on her legs, probably drifting up to where her skirt ended just above her knee."
So, the night before she wore a skirt.
"Inhaling a shaky breath, she sat up, darting her eyes over the room in search of her clothes. Her jeans lay on the floor at the foot of the bed bunched up as if she’d taken them off in a hurry. Not bothering to look for her underwear first, she reached for her pants and squirmed into the heavy material while still lying on the floor. After successfully wiggling into her jeans, she spied her purse on the seat of the armchair and quickly snatched it up, then crawled to the other side of the bed—his side—and saw her blouse peeking out from under the bed. "
The morning after - after doing a mock marriage she have no memories of - she wore jeans and a blouse?
Or she wore a skirt AND a blouse AND jeans? What kind of layering is that?
Oh wait, she's drunk! And she's TSTL so it's possible that she changed into a jeans to marry!
LOLs.
And by the way, it's NOT sexy when it read like the scene from Date Rape Drug 101.
Intoxicating, addictive, utterly enthralling and touching are just a few superlatives I believe any reader would use to describe the brilliance of Last Call by Jennifer Schmidt.
Immediately, sentence one of the prologue will have you inching toward your screen, Kindle, iPad, or novel as if you were watching your favorite motion picture or television series.
With enough twist and turns to make your head spin, Jennifer Schmidt brings to life her novel with not only an original plotline, but vivacious, peculiar, yet lovable, in your face characters that draw you in so deep you won’t realize how fast time flies when reading. Completely enthralling, her visually descriptive characters take on a life of their own and are, in my opinion, some of the best I’ve ever read in the past five years. You’ll find yourself laughing along with their jokes as if they were next to you, yelling at them when they’ve done something wrong, and crying with them as they final triumph over different situations. This novel is one of the best works I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading.
It is astonishing how her characters are fiction, and yet so relatable that you could compare their chaotic, lovable craziness to some of the antics of your cherished love ones.
The ride Mrs. Schmidt takes us on is a journey walking alongside Novalee Jensen who starts her tale with a bang!
On a vacation for one, she lives her last day in Vegas to the fullest, due to a little temptation featuring startling blue eyes and a fine coif of dark hair.
Too many drinks, a night out on the town and one fine gentlemen later, she finds herself with a hangover the size of the Luxor pyramid, and a small piece of shocking evidence from the night before. The next morning, she never realized how much one simple piece of paper, one mistake, and one stranger’s greed would affect her life.
I cannot bring myself to spoil anymore and strongly suggest that you grab your favorite wine, laptop, iPad, and reader and enjoy this novel.
Jennifer Schmidt writes Last Call with the skills of a seasoned author, capturing her audience’s attention right from the very beginning as if she’s been writing for years.
Flawlessly written, Last Call is definitely one of the few novels out there that will remain at your bedside table and not your shelf.
Read, laugh, and love Last Call written by Jennifer Schmidt.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchanged for my honest review. I would like to thank them. This was a great read it's very light and comical, plus it might just make you cry in places. I can't believe this is a debut novel by Jennifer Schmidt, I can't wait to see what else she has coming down our way.
This is about a young woman who has been dealt some tough breaks in life and even though things have settled down for her and she has a nice comfortable life in Montana with a home, plus she has bought and renovated an old bar and grill that is doing a good business. She is still lonely, so she decides to do something that is totally against her character and goes to Vegas alone for the weekend. The last night in a Casino she finds herself totally mesmerized by this man that seems pretty smitten by her as well. She just can't believe her good luck. She lets him buy her drinks and she has such a great time with him. She getting pretty tipsy towards the end of the evening and does something unthinkable for her. She wakes up in the morning in his bed with an awful headache and a plane to catch back to Montana. It's not her practise to spend the night with men she just meets. While she is slinking around trying to gather her clothing she trips over a document, she picks it up and it's a marriage certificate with her and his name on it dated last night. She grabs it and tucks it away and tries to forget about it. She doesn't tell her best friend about it and just hopes that nothing comes of it. Two years later this tall dark stranger appears at the bar looking for her which is kind of strange because she doesn't date, she leads a pretty solitude life with her cat and dog. The trouble begins when Dean happens to remind her of their marriage. He had his own reason for them to get married but now he is needing to prove that she is and has been his wife for the past two years so he can collect on a sizable inheritance that his Grandfather left to him only with a clause that he be married before he would be able to receive. It's a nasty court battle between him and his deadbeat of a dad on who will should inherit the sizeable estate. His father has been contesting him the whole way. I loved the sexy banter between Novalee and her best friend, Calli as well as the dialog between Dean and herself. This is a great book and I highly recommend it.
You know when you find a new author, read one of their books and love it so much you need to find others by them only to be completely disappointed because it didn’t live up to the expectations you set from the previous book your read?
Let me assure you Last Call is nothing like that. This was Schmidt’s debut novel and it’s just as hot as her recent release Risking It All. The only reason I have this 4 instead of 5 stars was because it took me a little longer to get into it this time around, but once I did the sparks started flying.
And I have to say, you can see how much this author has grown in the year between her first and second novel. Schmidt is one of those authors who is just going to get better and better with every book she puts out. Mark my words; this is a best-selling author in the making.
I loved how Novalee was just a strong female character (I admit I was a little worried she would be like Kennedy from Risking It All and get on my nerves with her indecisiveness, but she didn’t) Novalee has been through so much and came out a better and much wiser person because of it. She has the strength, character, personality, and pretty much everything else you could want in a heroine.
If you have read Schmidt’s recent release than you know she knows how to write men who make you pant. Dean was no exception. I loved reading his POV. I loved how I got to get into both of the main characters’ heads every second chapter. I actually enjoyed his POV more than Novalee’s, maybe because with his we got a look at Abby, who I also adored.
Abby and Cali were the two perfect BFF’s for our burned and bruised hero and heroine. These two completed the story so much. I think I read somewhere that Schmidt said she would like to write a book based on Abby. All I can say to that? YES!
I also loved how the title of the book was incorporated into the book
“It’s last call, Novalee. Come get what you want or walk away.”
One of my favourite lines in the book!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: this is an author you need to look out for. I cannot wait for her next release.

And what's Novalee to do when the hardest part turns out not to be confronting her past, but facing a possible future without her soon-to-be ex-husband?
Multi-millionaire Dean Philips wakes up in a Las Vegas hotel room to find the pretty blonde he married the night before gone. When Dean is ordered to have his wife appear in court, he finds himself in a small town in Montana, looking for the woman who ran off two years ago. But when Dean decides to mix a little pleasure with business, he suddenly finds himself in unfamiliar territory that could cost him everything
Not your run of the mill romance story, with lots of twist and turns the plot keeps you interested and the characters share a chemistry that is amazing. Ms Schmidt succeeds in making a cliché plot into something different, not your typical go to Vegas, get drunk, wake up married story! I found myself rooting for Novalee and Dean to make it after the first chapter or two! A fun, interesting and unique contemporary romance I give it 4 stars!
Loved this charming, intoxicating, sexy story it was incredible. For a debut novel Jennifer Schmidt you have a new fan it was well written and it captivated me from the beginning. The characters had easy fun and a playful demeanor with one another. Love their chemistry and witty, flirty banter as well as their keep real attitudes. The pull they have on one another, that need that makes it even more passionate beyond just a well written sex scene that really had me drawn in. Novalee Jensen is a beautiful, strong, independent woman who has some secrets as well as a past traumatic abusive relationship and has experienced a deep loss. She woke up two years ago while on a vacation to Las Vegas naked in a room with a stranger and a paper that said they were married. Novalee didn't stick around to figure out what happened. She hasn't heard anything from the stranger since and she is starting to think this secret is safe when the stranger shows up in the bar she runs. Dean is a handsome, non commitment, wealthy, multimillionaire who married Novalee for all the wrong reasons two years ago. He is the heir to the WIP Hotels that was left to him by his grandfather with a stipulation that he needed to be married to get his inheritance. Now his drunken, gambling father is contesting the will and Dean has a few weeks to show up in court with his wife or lose everything. As these two get reacquainted the sparks fly and both of them can't stop thinking about the other. They both connect on so many levels that they both don't like the thought that although they have talked about getting a divorce, maybe they belong together. Did Fate step in two years ago to bring these two together? Will the secrets put an end to their Hot Steaming Passion before their hearts are entangled? You are just going to have to read this Fantastic, Intoxicatingly, Addictive, Passionate Story. Highly recommend this story! Loved it! Received a copy through NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.
I admire how Miss Jennifer Schmidt gave the two main protagonists the chemistry that they share. Novalee and Dean just make you melt with their romance. I love their interactions because it’s funny, giddy and at times emotional. I also loved the way Miss Jennifer wrote the friendship of Novalee and Cali, they’re so fun to read. The book was written in Novalee’s and Dean’s points of view. I was amazed at how Miss Jennifer Schmidt maintained the air of mystery it had on the beginning, making me as a reader more curious to find out what Novalee and Dean went through that made them who they were, and thus making the read a pleasure. Miss Jennifer Schmidt has the right instinct on when to reveal what need to be revealed on the right time and pace of the story.
I will be honest, when I first read the book blurb, I thought it was another one of those cliché stories. You know, those girl-took-a-vacation-in-LasVegas-got-drunk-then-waking-up-with-a-massive-hangover-and-married-to-a-complete-stranger kind of cliché. I thought it was like that, but boy! I was so wrong! I mean, it did happen in the book but do you know how hard it is to make a cliché plot different and exciting? Miss Jennifer Schmidt succeeded in making a cliché plot into something more. The book owned me at the very first page. ‘Last Call’ has the mixed elements of a good book. It was fun, witty, emotional and melt-worthy! If you’re looking for a feel good romance then you wouldn’t want to miss this one!
I'm a little disappointed by this because I kinda liked RISKING IT ALL by the same author. I just felt that this book was a little soft. The story didn't really hold up. For Novalee (which I can't stand that name) to have been someone who had been beaten to within and inch of her life, I don't think she would be someone who would easily let loose and go off with a strange man let alone go on a vacation to a place like Vegas alone.
Also, who gets married to someone and just lets it go. Never tries to contact the person to say, "hey, we did something stupid, lets get this annulled."
Then Dean, what the heck. The truth was a much better solution than that convoluted lie he came up with. I mean, it would have been easier to say, "Look, I'm sorry that I married you under false pretenses, but my Dad is a douche who will take everything my grandfather built and destroy it. Could you help me?" He didn't even have to say that his father's actions lead to his mother and sister's death. I would have helped not knowing that.
Also Cali was so wishy washy. One minute, she's all "hurt her and I'll cut off your balls" then she's "you'll never know what could happen if you don't go for it" to "don't fall in love." Just crazy.
I do like that Novalee decides to help Dean, but I think she was being a martyr by not letting him explain, tell him to sign the divorce papers, leave her alone, but then wanting him to fight for her. No one knows what's in your head.
I feel the author missed an opportunity to make Abby jealous and maybe duplicitous in working with his father. I respect the fact that she was a good friend, I just think I would have liked the drama of her going another way with that character.
I stand by my scoring that it was just Ok.

Novalee Jensen is a small town bar owner who has had a rough and trying life full of abuse, pain, and death. Throwing caution to the wind she finds herself in Las Vegas flirting with a mysterious, but very good looking Dean Philips. What starts out as harmless banter and coy looks across a bar turns into a foggy night that ends up with Novalee waking beside her now husband. With haste, Novalee leaves Nevada and her new husband to return to her bar, but is always looking over her shoulder for the man she left complete with divorce papers. Dean Philips is a successful businessman who will go to great lengths keeping his grandfather’s legacy away from his corrupt father... even if it means lying to get a woman to marry him. Two years later Dean and Novalee are finally in the same room, at her bar. With the future uncertain and promises made long ago, the two face a road of interesting twists and turns. I found this book to be more entertaining then I could have ever hoped for. Somewhere between the crazy situations the heroes were placed in and the side characters, Last Call completely captivated me till the very end. There are some pretty tough scenes to get through as Novalee and Dean relive their past, but it is quickly brought back into cute, playful, and sometimes downright funny moments. This book is perfect for a quick “what happens in Vegas...” read. The charm that some of the characters have just jump out of the page and make you want to read about their lives. Last Call will make you want to stay up after hours to see what happens next!
Last Call was a cute, sometimes sweet, quick read. Although the drunken marriage in Vegas thing is hardly an original plot device, the reason behind Dean’s desire to marry Novalee is. I really liked all of the characters in this book, especially Novalee’s friend Cali. It would be great to get a book about her at some point.
There were a lot of moments where I wanted to shake the crap out of Dean. He was making the dumbest decisions, but I guess he had a decent reason. Still. He should have been honest with Novalee right from the start…well the second time they met after their time in Vegas. But then I think not being honest with her gave all of us an opportunity to see the Dean he wanted to be and not the Dean he was forced to be because of his family.
I think Novalee was an interesting character, but there were times that things kind of contradicted who she was. I know she didn’t want to be a victim, but sometimes she was and sometimes when she probably should have reacted like she was, she was so far from it that it was difficult to remember what had happened to her. I have to say I love that neither of them saw other people or even slept with other people for the two years between their quickie drunken wedding and when they are brought back together because of Dean’s family drama.
I am always looking for fun, interesting and unique contemporary books. For some reason, unique plotlines are a lot harder to come by in contemporary books. (at least the in the ones I have been reading- leave me suggestions if you think I am flat our wrong)Last Call, however, was pretty unique and certainly a fun read.
I really enjoyed it. I loved how strong the main character was. Novalee didn't take anything from anyone. She was a bit too closed off at times, but that was completely understandable because of her past. I really enjoyed this story. As I was reading, I kept wondering how things were going to turn out. It could have gone in very different directions. And the cool thing is that each of the different paths would have been believable. I liked that the book kept you guessing.
Last call is a really fluid read. It just flows right along- I had no problem reading it really quickly. I enjoyed the story. I would have been really mad at Dean, and I honestly don't even know what I would have done if I was in her shoes. But I will tell you think- the two of them do take one hell of a journey together ;) They certainly had a lot of heat. Last Call is a good read.
Inital Thoughts: I was given an ARC of this book by NetGalley. Vegas + secrets + lies = I'm in.
The Pros: This book was heartwarming. Novalee is just so sweet. She's been handed a rough deck of cards in her life, but she's made it out on top.
Dean's progression from miserable drunk to heartthrob was a fun ride to be on. His love for someone he barely knows (even though she's his wife) was confusing yet romantic at the same time.
The fact that they stayed faithful to each other for 2 years even when they both thought the other person didn't know about the marriage = soooo cute.
I liked that even though Novalee had no biological family, she had a family in her friends and patrons.
The Cons: The plot line was hardly original, and it was a bit predictable.
I doubt I would have taken Dean back after all his lies, but this is a romance novel. Sins are always forgiven.
The Wrap Up: 3.5 A quick, cute read. Nothing out of the ordinary, but a good choice for a book that doesn't require you to think too much.
Novalee Jensen has had a pretty rough life up until now. She's done everything she can to move on from everything that happened. But two years ago, she did something completely out of character for her. And she figured what happened in Vegas stayed in Vegas. But apparently that isn't the case for her. Because when her big mistake walks through the door of her bar, she has no idea what to do, or what he could possibly want after all of this time.
Dean knows what he did back then and now is totally wrong. And he knows that the woman he's been thinking about for the past two years might very well hate him, or come to hate him when everything is all said and done. However, he never expected to fall for her. And as time starts to count down for him, fall he does.
This book was extremely unique and very good! I enjoyed the whole plot line. And I adored both of the characters. Although I sorta got really pissed at Dean a lot, but I ended up thinking he was pretty awesome in the end. This book brought a lot of great surprise to me, and I had a wonderful time reading it. It had an alpha male, and a very strong heroine so that made it even better!
The idea of a Vegas wedding to a stranger intrigued me enough to want to read this novel right away. Novalee and Dean couldn't be from two more different worlds. Wealthy hotel mogul legacy vs small town hardware store owner's daughter. That in itself had me turning the pages.
I read this book in two days. Let me tell you, with all that I have going on in my life, that is quite a feat. I just couldn't stop. I kept telling myself they can never work out. How the hell can this possibly work? Dean was lying to Novalee, himself, and pretty much everyone around him yet elements of the truth were at the forefront throughout the story.
Schmidt kept me longing for Dean's confession to Novalee about the knowledge of their marriage long before he arrived on her doorstep. Even as I got to the last chapter with tears in my eyes, I had doubts that anyone could survive the pain they had put each other through and come out with a happily ever after.
So, my advice, run, DON'T WALK, to your computer and order or download this emotional thrill ride. You won't regret it.
Last Call is a pleasant little escape from reality. Both characters were strong individuals who survived traumatic experiences in their lives and came out stronger as a result of them. Through this strength they are still flawed making them very believable characters. The plot fluctuates between flirty and fun, like the cover suggests, to serious and back again. The author teases you throughout the book by gradually revealing details. The more you read, the more secrets you learn making it hard to put down. Romance fans will thoroughly enjoy Last Call. Dean and Novalee swim in chemistry, and as their relationship grows, the plot becomes addictive in a guilty pleasure kind of way.
**** ARC provided for review**** This was such an engaging book. It is one which I thought was going to be extremely light and fluffy, but I was pleasantly surprised that this wasn’t the case. The back and forth point of view was really good too, because you really got where both characters were coming from. Too bad we can’t all be so luckily and marry a millionaire by accident in VEGAS. I will say the only dis appointment for me was the lies. I really hate when characters lie for no reason other than to add drama. Why couldn’t dean walk in and tell Nov the truth and then use his charm to progress the story. That would have made an instant swoon rather than the false pretenses. In the beginning I felt more connection between Abby and Dean than Nov and Dean, so that was my biggest issue. Other than that this was a great read, highly recommend.
I really enjoyed this book, i like how it was written from both Novalee and Dean's POV. Novalee has had a rough life the small town girls goes on vacation to Las Vegas stepping out of her comfort zone and flirting with a very good looking man across the bar 'Dean'. what starts out as harmless flirting and banter turns into a foggy night for Novalee and a shocking discovery that she is married to the naked man in the bed. 2 years later Dean a successful business man rocks up in Novalee's bar. The attraction and chemistry between Novalee and Dean is HOT... While Novalee opens up to Dean about her past Dean opens up to Novalee about his but holds back a big secret from her. I love a HEA
Thanks to the publisher, The Writer's Coffee Shop Publishing House, and NetGalley for the chance to read this early!
This is my first book by Jennifer Schmidt; I was impressed by both her extraordinary characters and incredible writing style. I am not sure how the author was able to put that much chemistry & deception into a single book without a warming label – but I am glad she did. This is a keeper!

Too much alcohol! An impulsive wedding! No contact for two years with his new wife. Not to mention the appalling lack of veracity! Dean Phillips needs a wife in the next 30 days or his alcoholic, gambling, trifling and abusive father will inherit the family millions. It was a cute story but Dean just told way too many lies to Novalee. She really needs a husband who is honest and reliable, not a man too afraid to tell the truth. The story was over burdened with profanity and graphic sex.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thew story had an original plot and there was an undeniable chemistry between the two main characters. If you're looking for a read with romance, sex, heartbreak and a bit of fun - this is it
