So often we let our value, our worth be defined by what we do, what others say, and those pesky voices in our head. Even our name carries weight and meaning. So what could more than 30 unnamed women referenced in the Bible possibly have to say to you today? Ah, the wondrous answer will be revealed as you read about "the woman at the well," "Jairus' daughter," "Samson's mother," "Potiphar's wife," and yes, "Mrs. Noah." This is a book of encouragement, of hope, of blessing that will help you: ~ Find your voice ~ Embrace your potential ~ Move past your pain ~ And discover your true identity!
For the sake of full disclosure, the author of this book, Mrs. Damon, is a friend of my parents. While I do not personally know her extremely well and it's actually been several years since I last spoke with her, she went to the same church my family went to when I was very young and she was one of the first supporters of my early attempts at a craft business. So, when I heard she had written a devotional book, I wanted to give it a look.
In this book Mrs. Damon helps the reader look at familiar Bible stories from both the Old and New Testament from a different angle by highlighting the women who were mentioned in the stories but were not named (Noah's wife, the woman with a problem of the blood, the widow who gave her last coin, among several others.) She writes letters to these women, asking and educatedly speculating about what their lives were like and how the events they witnessed and sometimes participated in may have impacted them. She then gives them appropriate names. Not necessarily biblical ones, mind you, just names with meanings that match what Mrs. Damon feels applies to their stories.
I definitely enjoyed reading this little book. Mrs. Damon shows that she knows the Bible well and also knows the facts about the culture in which these women lived back in biblical times. I liked how she made me think about the lives of these unnamed women when, in my own Bible reading, I don't think I ever noticed some of them, and the ones I did notice I didn't think quite so deeply about. But these women were people who had lives that God cared about and in which He was involved, just like He cares about and is involved in the lives of even the smallest, most obscure of people today. Some of them may have had even more impact on the stories of those around them than we think they did, or than even they themselves could have guessed. It was interesting to think about what that impact might have been and that we, ourselves, may have more impact on the world and people around us than we think we do. I also appreciated her highlighting the many women who specifically were followers of Jesus and that even though the society of the time basically treated them as little more than baby-producers and house-keepers, Jesus loved and cared about them as much as He loved and cared about the men who followed Him and He treated the women like the human beings with hearts and souls that they were.
Overall, this was a very thought-provoking and uplifting read that I fully recommend.
Excellent book about some incredible women. The author gives the Bible verse(s) that tell about them. Then she writes the woman a letter and gives her a name. At the end of each chapter is a section of Reflections and she asked some very good questions. I read the book for a study of unnamed women in the Bible we are having at church. I will definitely read this one again. I recommend it highly.
While the cover is a bit quirky looking, this is a great example of not judging a book by its cover. This is a beautiful book that brings to life the stories of girls and women so often overlooked in the Bible. Some made me chuckle, most brought tears to my eyes, but each left me with a deep sense of gratitude that someone took the time to consider their realities. I will definitely be visiting this book regularly, and recommend it to anyone looking to supplement their Bible reading.
What an inspiration to look at these women in the Bible who, although they were not considered important enough to name, changed history with their lives. God used every one of them and I'm sure he called each of them lovingly by name.
