Winter's Absolution

Rate this book
***Warning. This book is for mature audiences only and has many triggers including strong language, sexual/fetish content and rape/ abuse flashbacks. This is a work of fiction about surviving and is not for the faint of heart. *** This is an MC Romance with dark edges...

Reality can be more terrifying than the strange tales that sometimes circulate. When inky blackness creeps and crawls into every internal recess of a human being, it can be a recipe for living hell on earth.

But sometimes, even in the most desolate, frigid terrains… absolution can be found.

Luna
Serpent tongues, slithering all around, hissing violent, toxic things, choking the very life out of me… There is no light here, yet I cling to a formless hope that may not even exist. Even as this personal prison tries to wring the last bit of breath from my cold body, I can’t help but think that a lifeline will be thrown to me through the barrage of taunting shadows that tempt me with whisperings to simply end it myself.

Leo
The voices of past deeds and experiences never stop, no matter how hard I work to get over the scarred bits that are always on the verge of being picked open like a sore that will never heal. Most days, I’d rather bang my head into a concrete slab until they all just shut the fuck up. That all stopped the day I found her, a broken, quivering mess who was afraid to leave my property. Her personal demons shone through her sunken eyes, and I knew I had found someone familiar. She scared me to death, but through her, my purpose in this godforsaken world came into focus. She needed me to be a beacon… to show her the way out of the desolate pit of hell that I had only recently figured out how to climb out of.

What inspired you to write your first Novel? "My girlfriends and I were sitting around discussing our latest reads, all the perfect Cinderella type romance novels that are out there and how we would like to read something that more could relate to. I have been an avid reader since I was a child and love to write, so I decided to write something for us. A not so perfect love story; one that had a little humor, tied in some vampires, a little adult content, morally hard choices and was a satisfying read for all those hard working readers who want some good ole' junk food for the brain when they come home after a long day at work."
Raised in California she moved to Colorado to pursue her education and fell in love with the area as well as her now husband.

Though Kristina loved her art and literature classes in college she put that to the side in order to start her career in nursing. After establishing her career she felt something was missing. While she adores being a nurse she felt her artistic side was calling and started to pick up her writing and painting again, setting aside a few hours a day on her day's off. After a period of time she found that her short story had grown into her first novel. Writing is a passion of hers and she feels the greatest achievement in her art is creating works that bring enjoyment to others.

She continues to reside in Colorado with her husband and children. Kristina is working on her third novel, part III of The Lunar Eclipse Series.

Normally as soon as I finish a book I write up my review but I haven't with this. I'm just not sure how to give this book the credit it deserves without dropping any spoilers. So I'm gonna tell you if you like the darker kinda books then I highly recommend this story.

My heart broke for Luna. Her world fell apart when her loving dad died. Kidnapped and held as a sex slave in a cage she knows her only hope to save herself is herself. Leo doesn't realise how much his life is going to change when he finds Luna. He's got his own past demons to deal with and he knows it's not safe to let anyone in.

I've got to say there were twists I didn't expect. When I wasn't reading this I was syncing it with my kindle app on my phone so I could read any chance I could.
If I could give this more than five stars I would. I'm off now to see what else this author has written:)

5 Stars!

This year is all about stepping out of the box for me and this book did just that... took me way way way out of the box and comfort zone I read in... and then some.

Dark. Raw. Dirty. Intense. Unexpected. Kristina Canady sure knows how to weave a twisted, gritty tale that will leave your jaw dropped and head spinning from the experience it offers... and that's what this book is, an experience... but I wouldn't change a moment.

Winter's Absolution is a book that marks your soul deep and rips at your heart, leaving it cut completely wide open. I'm still reeling from reading this novel and the feelings it evoked in me. Luna and Leo will break you (they did me times ten), over and over again, but hope, healing, and redemption.... beacons of light in such dark.

Leo and Luna won't be leaving me anytime soon and I definitely look forward to the next from Kristina.

I recommend this book to people who heed warnings and like dark dark dark... it's definitely not for everyone.

Title: Winter's Absolution
Author: Kristina Canady

5 amazing stars

Dayum! I never expected this when i picked up Kristina Canady's book. I'm still floored by just how good this story was. For my first book from this author, i don't think i could have picked a better introduction to what she has to offer her readers. Those warnings? Oh yes, they are real and absolutely right in every way. It's dark, it's dirty and it does contain triggers that might not be for everyone. But for me? It was memorable.

4.5 sexy dreams

It's the kind of story that makes you wonder just what kind of monsters exist in the world and what would make them act like that. Then it makes you want to cheer in happiness as you witness just what heroes and survivors, fighters, are made of. I loved watching and experiencing Leo e the kind of man that Luna needs. One thing is for certain, i'll be following Kristina Canady and this series from now on.

This is one of those books that has huge amounts of potential yet falls short. In fact, lots of areas fall short.... in regards to level of darkness, we know that huge amounts of depravity take place yet the author doesn't describe any of it to us. The premise is somewhat unique yet the writing style is a bit odd. More than once I felt certain that the author's primary language is not English due to the odd phrases she used such as:
"Never have I ever felt so alive in an instant or starving on an unhinged degree. I want to drowned in this moment and stay lost forever.”
&
“Carmen steps from the bar in the center of the room and rubs her tig-ole-bitties on my arm.”
&
“No one is giving me a choice and that fact alone is making me feel stabbing.”

What did not fall short were the sex scenes-a few were extremely hot- but there weren't many of those either. Perhaps with a really good editor this could be made into a stronger book?

Winter’s Absolution by Kristina Canady. I really enjoyed this story. Luna’s world exploded the same time she watched as her father got blown up while serving in Afghanistan. Now she finds herself living in a cage. She is dirty, hungry and is being physically and sexually abused. She is being held as a sex slave. Knowing if she doesn’t escape soon she will die in that cage. When the opportunity presents itself she runs for her life and ends up hiding in a bunch of hay in a barn. Leo has served his country and has done unspeakable things as a special ops soldier. Now he has a farm where he can be alone with his horses. His closest neighbor is miles away. When a bunch of his meth head neighbors come onto his property looking for someone he scares them off. When they leave he finds a guest in a pile of hay. This was a story of two people who have endured terrible things and for some strange reason they are able to find their way to a somewhat normal life. Luna has to deal with trying to get over the abuse she endured at the hands of her captives. While Leo has the MC club his surrogate father is in along with prescription drugs to keep his demons at bay, he still deals with the horrors he had seen and done in the name of war. I really enjoyed the way the author told this story. I was pulled into the story and couldn’t get enough. This was the first time I have read a book by this author. I look forward to reading other books by this author. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader Copy of this book and I give this 4.5 stars. Do to the way the book ended and the questions I have, I can only hope there will be another book.

This is my first book by this author, but the blurb looked just up my street, so thought I'd give it a go.

OMFG!! What a read!!! I just loved it and couldn't get enough. The story drew me in from page 1 and didn't let go til it was read, but what a world I was drawn in to!! OMG I love a dark read, but this was truly and utterly dark, raw, gritty, violent but at the same time it was full of love, selflessness, healing, self worth and belief. A true roller coaster of an emotional read.

Luna has been kidnapped and held as a sex slave, subjected to the most horrendous and horrible violent raping and torture you can think of. But has a fleeting chance of escape and takes it, running for her life, finding a place to hide on a farm in a bale of hay. Her kidnappers are sent away for the farm's owner, Leo, who finds Luna and does his best to help her in his own way, even though he is broken beyond any kind or normality.

What follows is an epic journey of self discovery for them both. I won't tell you any more about this, as it really has to be read, to be understood and appreciated. I am so glad I took a chance on this book and read it!!

But be warned about how dark and violent it is and what it contains, as there are triggers galore in here. But if you can get past that, you are in for one hell of a ride. A fantastic read, highly recommended!!

Wow, I was totally blown away by this book! This is the 1st time I have read any of this author work, and OMG, it will not be the last! This is the story of Luna and Leo, and how he supports her to overcome her kidnapping and repeated rapes. No spoilers though; if you are an MC fan, then this is a definite read for you!
This author has done an amazing job with this storyline, and I was intrigued and captivated from the very beginning. This story is dark, heartbreaking, twisted, and an absolute rollercoaster journey.

HOLY COW! I really do not care for dark reads but read this one because I love Kristina Canady's books so I thought ok, why not. Worse case I don't finish best case I love, right? I fell in love with this book in the first chapter. The writing just drew me in and had me hooked. Hook, line, and sinker hooked! Dark? Oh yeah this is probably one of the darkest, most twisted books I have read in a very long time. I cried at parts of it, cried for Luna and everything she has gone through. But was proud of her for overcoming the kidnapping and repeated raping. Leo is so patient with her even though he is messed up in the head as well. Can these two help each other heal? This story left me screaming and I thought there would be a cliffhanger. Well Ms. Canady is known for cliffhangers, so why not. I was very surprised and happy when that didn't happen.

I voluntarily reviewed and ARC of this book.

This story blew me away. Two beyond broken people are brought together unexpectedly in the most unconventional way. *Author does disclose warnings about rape/abuse*
Luna has been prisoner for years, used and abused within an inch of her life and she finally escapes... to a barn on the property of Leo. She finds a solace there with the animals and she can't bring herself to leave the safety of the barn.
Leo had enough demons of his own he fights daily and he doesn't know what to do when he find this broken girl in his barn.
Can two broken people help each other to heal & move on?
This book is a standalone.

I have said this before, but seriously, I NEVER saw this book coming at all! Frankly, it brought me to my knees for real. Luna's world as she knew it crashed down when her father died, and she didn't think it could get any worse. But in her case, life still had room to get worse when she was kidnapped to be held in a cage as a sex slave. And she knows that she only has herself to find a way to escape. As she's close to the end of her rope, the opportunity to run shows itself so she runs, and finds a bale of hay to hide in. It just so happens that she finds the farm of a tortured soul ex special ops soldier named Leo, who just wants to exist with his horses. He finds Luna, and this is when two tortured souls start to bond. Winter's Absolution is a heart breaking, dark story that's no joke. I'm a girl with a lot of dramatic emotions, but Kristina Canady brought out new ones that I never knew that I had. I'm still having a hard time breathing after experiencing Luna's journey, and even though she's a character, this is the kind of things that are going on everywhere, so Luna really came alive for me. This author with her talented writing style didn't sugar coat anything, and I'm not saying that she came off as glorifying this awful issue, she did a brilliant job at really telling some scary truths, and I pray that it opens some more eyes that may try to pretend trafficking doesn't exist. Yes, I'm on my soapbox, but this is a real problem that isn't pretty, and very rarely are any trafficking victims getting any sort of HEA. Not to mention the ones that do escape, the emotions sometimes are too much, and the healing process is super hard, and this author showcased all of what I'm saying realistically. I will be reading more of her asap, and I seriously encourage everyone brave enough to read this intense story! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

5 holy macaroni stars!!

Holy hell this book!!

I have never went from reading the last word of a book, to immediately messaging the author. I have never missed appointments or been late for plans and things I had to do because I was too wrapped up in reading. But this book made me do both. This book....ugh...I can't even find the words.

Just know, I was blown the hell away!!

Dark, twisted, and messed up is kinda my thing. I love a fucked up story. I love how it twists your insides, makes you heart broken, on the verge of being sick, wanting to drown in darkness, and then finally seeing the light. Finally finding the beauty. But also the part of realizing it was beautiful all along. There is beauty in pain. There is beauty in the tough times. Shaping you into the person you were always meant to be and the person you need to be. There is always beauty in the darkness, and that's the light. When you finally reach it, when it is finally in your grasp, you have your victory. Even though it doesn't feel like a victory at the moment. This book was that!

There was so much pain, so many demons on both sides, but they each brought each other light. In their own fucked up way, they shined brighter for the other and thanks to the other. Their demons danced a perfect dance together. Their screams made a perfect in tuned symphony together.

It was dark.
It was twisted.
It was absolutely amazing!

Mixed feelings about this book. I absolutely liked the general 'feel' of this book!! It could have been an amazing story… but in the end, for me, it just wasn't. All the ingredients were there (huge potential), but the story wasn't as perfect as it could have been. Some aspects of it could have been more elaborated; a lot of dark issues and depravity, still nothing is really described while this is a dark read. {Er waren dingen die wat mij betreft verder uitgediept hadden kunnen worden! Dat had het verhaal 'krachtiger' gemaakt.} I wouldn't be surprised when someone told me several scenes of this book were written by different authors?? Sometimes the 'feel' was completely different from one scene to another. When I come to think of it, the writing style is what kinda bothered me at some points in this book. (Don't know how to say it otherwise! Language barrier, lol!) Nevertheless, I enjoyed the majority of this truly beautiful but non-conventional love story.
What I loved about this story was that Luna and Leo didn't end up in bed having sex too soon. In a lot of books, where the heroine went through what Luna went through (being kidnapped and held as a sex slave; being physically and sexually abused, violently raped and tortured for more than 2 years), all seems forgotten when they meet the H and have sex very soon after the horrific events. Not in this case. Luna is absolutely traumatized and it takes a long time before she trusts Leo enough to let him even touch her. Leo is so patient with Luna even though he is messed up in the head as well. He's got his own demons to deal with (served his country as a special ops soldier and has done unspeakable things) and he suppresses those demons with medication. He doesn't even trust himself enough to let anyone get close(r).
I absolutely loved Leo and Luna together and I liked their secluded life, with the horses and Steel! ❤ I loved the other old ladies, Bex, Wingz and Sugar, and I loved Leo's 'brothers'.
The story changed (maybe even derailed!) {wat mij betreft 'ontspoorde'!} after Luna got kidnapped again. What's with the sudden 'Indian' thing? Luna leaving on their wedding night? Leo staying away from Luna for 2 years? (Although I admired him for following Luna's wishes.) And the thing with Luna's mother? That added nothing new or extra to the story!
I'm still in doubt between 3 and 4 stars; 3 stars is not enough but 4 stars is too much in my rating system. So I'd say: 3,6 stars, which makes it a 4 star book on GR. 😉
BTW: this was the first book that I have read by this author..... *and* this was (at that moment!) book no. #888 on GR. 😊

This was the first book I have read from this author and whilst it took me longer then normal to get into the book I really did enjoy it. I will be looking out for Kristina's future releases.

This is quite a dark book as it deals with rape which some readers may find hard but it was done very well. It is a dark story of heartbreak, abuse and healing, its quite the emotional roller-coaster. There are some brilliantly written twists that take you by surprise.

The characters are so well written, their emotions really feel raw and real. My heart broke for Luna, her world was completely destroyed when her Dad died and she was kidnapped and held in a cage as a sex slave. When she finally escapes she hides in a barn where she is discovered by Leo. He wants to help Luna but has no idea how to, he is such a lovely guy with his own demons to fight.

I am hoping to read more from Kristina with these Characters and MC

Wow!
This book was so different to anything Kristina Canady, has written before. If you love dark romance you will love this book....It was so good!

Luna has been through so much. Then if things aren't bad enough, she's kidnapped, held captive and subjected to years of abuse. Her only thought is to escape...

Leo fights the demons of his past daily. The MC helps take his mind off things, but doesn't keep the darkness at bay. Nothing does, until he meets Luna. She is the light to his darkness...

I don't want to give too much away. This is a book you MUST read and experience for yourself.

Abso-freaking-lutely amazing book!!! This is the first book I've read by Ms. Canady and I will be reading more. Luna's world turned upside down when she was a child and her dad died in Afghanistan. Now she finds herself abducted by an MC and is held in a cage by them starved, filthy and sexually abused. She is unwilling sex slave for the "master" and he won't share. At the first opportunity to escape she takes it and ends up in a barn with her captors breathing down her neck. After she has been held captive for 2 years her body finally gives in she passes out.

Leo, a MC member who is NOT affiliated with the sex slave trade, it is his barn that she ends up in. While serving his country he participated in some atrocities, but when he got out he just wants to be the Enforcer for his MC. But when the meth-heads of the rival MC show up on his property looking for something he scares them off. After they leave he discovers a hidden "treasure" under the hay. They both have have really, really messy pasts but will they find common ground to help each other heal?

I can't wait for book 2!!! I highly recommend this book.

Not sure how to rate this one. I loved the story but it kind of fell flat for me towards the end. I adore Luna. The character is such a strong one and they way the author tells her story is amazing. I really liked Leo as well. Just right there at the end the story just didn't do it for me anymore. Not sure why that is or if it went a different direction than I thought it was going to go. Overall great story just wish for a different ending in some way.

This book will take you on an emotional ride that you don't want to get off of any time soon! The author does a great job emphasizing the fact that not all sexual abuse survivors heal at the same pace, or in the same clinical environments. Some, like our heroine, need a more spiritual healing.
Take a journey with Luna as she learns to live again after years of sexual abuse and captivity. Can she learn to love herself, and maybe others, along the way? Will Leo, her reluctant and damaged hero, be what she needs? You'll need to read their story to find out 😉 I loved it!!

Smh in awe, I swear your books have a way of making one feel deeply. When reading, it pulls emotions from you that you didn't know existed let alone is it something that one wants to address, ya know.

The absolute horror that Luna endured...it was brutal as hell and I admire her strength, will and determination to try and move forward with her life and not let her past rule her every day life. Sure she has demons to fight but she kept moving forward and persevered. It doesn't take an expert to know that Leo himself has some deep seeded issues that he tries to suppress with meds. But I believe that they both needed and helped each other to overcome the obstacles from their past. They were two halves that made a beautiful whole and their love, grit, fierce passion for one another filled all those cracks that let nothing but light shine in on them.

Because the story was focused mainly on Luna and Leo, IMO the whole MC aspect of it was more in the background and didn't play too big of a role in this book, but their presence was made known and felt. It's not a bad thing that it played a more background role to Luna & Leo's story so to speak. But just putting it out there for those who might be looking for the same ole same ole when it comes to MC books. This couples story worked out differently and I felt it was told exactly how it should. BTW I freakin' loved Bex, Wingz and Sugar! Those gals cracked me up.

Even though it was a tough read for me at times due to the horror that Luna went through, I really enjoyed Luna and Leo's story. I hope we get to see them in future books just to see how they're doing. Looking forward to more in this series! Great job!!!

This is a new author for me, and I was so glad that I discovered this book.

You are swept away in to the life of Luna, you follow her on how she becomes a victim, then a survivor. She never loses that spark, and it was great to see.

Leo is a man that is so full of demons, no one can help him, that is until he comes across Luna.

The writing was flawless, and when you start reading you cannot put the book down. This book is not all full of sweet things and roses, there will be times that your heart will break.

Warning: this book deals with sex slavery rape and abuse throughout.in somewhat graphic detail.

Notwithstanding the subject matter this is a fantastic book.

The characters are well developed, the storyline has depth and the writing is excellent.

A journey of two very damaged people on their slow journey of recovery.

Its painful to read at times but its fine sensibly and not gratuitously.

First book by this author. Now I need to go devour her back catalogue!!

Awesome writing!

Grr update, no follow on mc books, what a shame n waste of all that world building!

Luna is one strong as (bleep) female character! Wow, what she has gone through and survived makes her one kick butt leading lady. Leo has also survived a living hell and has no idea what to do with the woman who is hiding in his barn. All he knows is he must protect her. Loved these two together and I love the fact that the author didn’t rush the relationship. Luna is timid and scared for some time. I will say though, that at the end of the book I wanted to throttle her. I love MC books and I would love to read some more of Obsidians Blade MC. 4 stars, 3 hands down the pants.
