The Azure Window

Rate this book
Amazon's Best Selling Novel. Spanning over sixty years, from an island torn apart in the Second World War, to what is now a tourist’s paradise, the story intertwines three separate love stories. The focus is on three generations of women, who like The Azure Window, are beautiful, fragile and enigmatic.

Primarily set in Malta in present times, Jessy McGuill becomes drawn into the past and the life of her mother, Maria, whom she never knew. The truth she learns of her grandmother Ana’s endurance as she struggled to survive severe loss and heartache during the Siege of Malta, forms the backdrop to Jessy’s own story.

Like Ana, Jessy also finds love in Malta, until her grandfather arrives on the island, with a relative in tow. This young man Neil, brings with him his own secrets and the friendship between him and Jessy soon causes a ripple of unease for several reasons. A plot unravels that provides a particular and unbelievable twist which will captivate the reader.

As with the 1st book in the series, this one was again superb. This one filled in the gap of the missing years in UNDER MALTESE SKIES. I will do a full review when I have read 3rd book in series called ALL THE SEAS BETWEEN.
This book is VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I absolutely love this series by Nicola Kearns! Beautifully written...I love how the characters pass on their traits of strength and perseverance, for ex: Ana down to her daughter Maria and onto her granddaughter Jessy. Also, there is the lesson of facing one’s emotions and desires head on, rather than gamble on an outcome. Be forthright and honest with yourself as well as with others. The descriptions of Malta, England and Ireland are incredibly vivid...and there are twists to the plot, questioning the importance of actual blood lines versus the loyalties of those who stay present in Jessy’s life, another example. I like the contrast of Malta’s condition during the Second World War and the gradual reconstruction of its beauty throughout the story. The ending is superb and unexpected. I am definitely going to read book three of this series!
