Rate this book

Since Guillem Balague's English puts many UK sports journalists to shame, I was expecting a quick and easy read in a clear, idiomatic style, and I wasn't disappointed. What I really wanted from this book, and what Balague delivers, was some insight - both into the personality of Pep Guardiola, the most spectacularly successful football manager of the moment, and into the methods of coaching that produced, in the form of the current FC Barcelona team, one of the best football sides of all time. Balague provides both. Any fan of Barça - in fact, any real* football lover - will find something of interest in here.

* Perhaps not any Real football lover. :-)

Pep looked into the stands while everyone was waiting for his words. The stadium was near full to capacity with 88,044 spectators, sitting in anticipation. Some holding each other. Fully grown men trying to hide their tears. Young girls taking pictures on their phones to capture the moment. As everyone remained on their feet, Pep's dad, Valentí, had to sit down because his legs were trembling.

The man considered the club's favourite son was leaving home, again. It was goodbye to an older brother for some, a father figure for others, a Messiah, even, for a few. An example of comportment, a leader, a role model, courteous, the ideal husband, the fiancé you dream of, the friend you share a beer with on a Saturday, a good man, healthy, calm and alternately passionate and measured according to what the moment requires. A nation, a club and its fans were feeling orphaned.

Imagine.

Imagine having to represent all those roles. The weight of all that, the pressure. Can you understand now why he had to go?

This biography of Pep Guardiola is a fantastic read, telling the story of his childhood in Cataluña, his playing days for Barça and beyond, and then his rise to legend as coach of the best team in the world from 2008 - 2012.

At the end of those four seasons, Pep shocked the world by leaving his boyhood club, claiming he had done all he could do and that the time he had enjoyed there was enough for him to leave on a high. Crucially, he believed he had come to the end of a cycle and did not want to lose himself or see the club lose through fatigue.

Guillem Balague, a welcome gift to all English football fans because of his commentary on the Spanish game in our country, tells a wonderful story that captures all the key moments of Pep's time in charge of Barça - the happy times, the sad times, and what effect the emotional rollercoaster ride had on its players and manager through offering first-hand accounts from the people involved.

Pep comes across as a deep and thoughtful sportsman, who, while being very obviously great at his job - perhaps even the best - has a rich internal life with ambitions and fears that we all share in some form or other. Like most real-life heroes he is truly great but acknowledges his all-too-human vulnerabilities.

That is why I would say that not only is this one of the best sports biographies I have read, but it is an absolutely brilliant biography full-stop.

While I was reading the book, Pep - at last - announced that he is coming to England. Now we know he will coach Manchester City FC next season and carry that club's hopes and dreams but what is most important is that he will bring his idiosyncratic "tiki-taka" playing style to a country caught in what I would say is a footballing crisis.

At the time of writing this review, the ultimate underdogs Leicester City FC top the Premier League table through being a great counter-attacking side, making full use of the opportunities they get each and every game because they don't care to hold possession or play a dominant passing style. They choose not to have the ball for much of the 90 minutes but when they do have it, they make sure to make it count and leave a nasty bite. This is an amazing story in itself, but although I have a soft spot for Roy of the Rovers narratives, we are in need of a team that will lead the way with the aim of creating a perfect football style.

Pep at Barça, and now at Bayern Munich, has demanded high performances from his players in key parts of the game. High percentage ball possession, extreme spacial awareness, and confidence in attack are three stand-out characteristics that his teams show. Perhaps that is the future for this crazy Premier League if Pep's City side leads the way: Pass and move, and make the football do the work while staying true to your vision. Or, put very simply in Pep's own words, 'When we have the ball, we can't lose it. And when that happens, run and get it back.'

We will have to wait and see but if this book is an indicator as to what we should expect then I think the future is looking very bright for our national game. His side will lead the way and other teams will - hopefully - follow.

Welcome to England, Pep!

I actually started reading this on the recommendation of a coworker (the same one who told me to read Inverting the Pyramid: The History of Football Tactics) and I felt that with Guardiola now the manager of Bayern, I really ought to learn more about him and his style. What I didn't expect was to find an entertaining, well-written account of Guardiola's career, from star player to the prodigal son returning to lead Barcelona to unprecedented glory.

Balague is apparently a reported on Sky who primarily covers La Liga, and his knowledge is evident throughout, as is his dedication to retrieving as much of the facts as possible. The language is easy to follow and full of warmth; this is clearly the account of a man who loves and respects Guardiola a lot. The introduction, by Sir Alex Ferguson, asks why Guardiola ever left Barcelona. The book then endeavours to ask that question, by using information from interviews with other managers, Barcelona players and Guardiola himself. It is a truly touching account of a man who gave his all both as a player and as a manager, and for whom Barcelona will always be home. It also explains why he ultimately had to leave, and what he hopes he will find at Bayern.

The reason I didn't end up giving this book five stars is because I felt parts of it became repetitive. While for most the story of Pep at Barcelona is a familiar one, for me it largely wasn't. The fact that it's basically all summarised in the first chapter made it feel a bit... redundant to read on (especially initially). I am glad I did, after all, but ultimately I felt it could have been a bit better paced. That being said, I would definitely recommend this to anyone with a passing interest in perhaps one of the best managers in recent history. I very much look forward to seeing what he'll achieve with Bayern, and whatever projects Guardiola decides to undertake in future.

A book about leadership, culture and implementing a philosophy and ethos, rather than your typical footballer biography. A little heavy in places and Balague is slightly too simpering in his over-evident admiration for Pep. That said, you can overlook this and enjoy and learn something.

Fascinating, interesting and thorough book on Pep Guardiola, his view on football, leadership, philosophy and journey through the highest ranks of European football. The reader gets to follow him from the streets of Santpedor, the Catalan village where he was raised, to Barcelona, winning multiple honors as a player and later becoming a game-changing manager captivating the whole footballing world with his style of play. After winning everything with the legendary Barcelona side (08-12) the journey continues and the reader gets to follow him on his sabbatical and later when taking charge of Bayern and City although very briefly when compared to the Barcelona section.

Key takeaways from the book are listed below:

- Humility, civility and respect. Pep's mission was to implement a footballing philosophy that would not only be successful on the pitch but also serve as a platform to represent the values both he, Cruyff and Barcelona stood for, that is: humility, civility and respect.

- Never abandon your principles. When becoming a coach in foreign countries, i.e. Germany and England, he would often hear that adaptation was crucial. Cruyff had taught him that "stay true to yourself and your principles, never abandon them or compromise them". This is probably where he differentiates himself as a manager/coach/person mostly as he always stood his ground and did not change even though the media, former coaches etc claimed he needed to. Never abandon you principles is a common theme in the book and helps you understand why Pep has become one of the most successful manager of all times, and surely the most influential.

- Communication is key. Pep (through the author) is eager to reiterate that tactics, ideas and vision are pretty much useless unless you know how to communicate this to the players. Pep's team talks, his preparation and how he motivates the player really gets the reader to understand how hard it is to achieve that level of communication. The reader gets frequent access to one-on-one talks between Pep and different players or the whole team where he uses unconventional methods to ignite a spark and create motivation.

- "My way of winning". Even though several doubters, critics and where emphasizing the importance of "adaptation", Pep never budged and always reiterated that it's "my way of winning".

Overall, a great read on a legendary manager (player as well), his childhood and his ups and downs as manager for several European clubs. The main reason why I haven't rated it 5* is due to the fact that his tactical concepts aren't explained (a more thorough walk-through would have been appreciated) sufficiently. Also, the lack of information about Pep as a person and one-on-one interviews with him is something that was really missing. A lot of the book is actually about his nemesis José Mourinho as well and not something the reader actually wants to know when finding out who Pep is. But besides these things, a solid 4* and great book.

This is a fascinating read into the life of football coach Pep Guardiola. The book covers his career as a player all the way to his second season in charge at Manchester City.
Pep leads from different sports and applies what he learns into improving the game of football. It's great to see how he has adapted and won trophies in three different leagues so far. You can tell he still has a lot more to bring to the game.
The book is very well written and I recommend it to anyone in sports or business.

I should have really enjoyed this book, that is the thought that constantly rattled around my brian as I was reading it, but, apart from a few notable passages, this was not a book I enjoyed.

I was a great admirer of the Barcelona team of 2008-2012 and what they achieved under Pep Guardiola's leadership and I was interested to gain some insight from this book as to what went on behoind the scenes to deliver such a dominant force over that period.

For me, though, this book was too much akin to a hagiography rather than a biography , at some points so saccarine as to make my teeth ache just ot read it. ( the prime example being a picture of Guardiola in thoughtful mode being captioned along the lines of " Pep never stops thinking about how to make the team better "

Guillem Balague clearly interviewed subjects at length for this book but I found it troublesome his habit of quoting at length ( and apparently verbatim ) long tracts of dialogue that had apparently occured some years before - this worried me as it felt like revisionsism to a certain extent.

The two most interesting passages relate to the signing and falling out with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and also some passages that dared to suggest that the control the Lionel Messi exerted over team decisions may have crossed a line.

In the former case there is some good exploration of why the relationship broke down, in the latter we are left with implications hanging, left un examined.

Overall this left me guessing that the author was both too close to the subject and also unwilling to explore some interesting lines of enquiry to understand better both the man and also how such magnificent football was delivered over those four years.

I know how much of a player Pep Guardiola is. As a fan of the sport and a cúle for just over 5 years, I never had the chance to see him play; but I have heard so much about him from other players. Many footballers, including Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas, look up to him.

I had the chance to watch Pep's Barça. They were a force to reckon with. They were always a joy to watch (except most probably if....). This book's wonderful as we could read what's going on in the mind of a Pep Guardiola. It's so nice to read about what his players thought of him (I know about his ugly rift with Ibra but I never thought that it was THAT ugly).

I was so gutted that day he announced that he isn't going to continue with Barça. At that moment, I cannot imagine a Barça with Pep Guardiola. But what can you do if he wants to move on? At the end of the day, just have to accept that just like players, coaches will come and ago. A new era will always be born. It's just like that.

I would recommend it to everyone. Not Barça fans only. Though it is about football, dressing rooms and Pep.

Good pace and well balanced read within tactics, origins and even a bit of dressing room gossip.

For the ones we lived Guardiola's four years at Barcelona becomes a beautiful collectiok of memories. For the ones that didnt dnjoy that team live... first watch a couple Madrid-Barça of that period to understand the level of football on display and see how those matches are the finest picture of the artistic process that starts with Cruyff and Guardiola excels and executes to the most thrilling stage.

The writing reads effortlessly to the point of gripping you through a quick and enjoyable easy read.

I would love to know more about his following adventures. Specially at Man City.
For that we'll have to wait until Guardiola's next major succes. For when a second instalment?

So much to learn from the maestro philosopher of modern football

This is a very enjoyable book to read. As a diehard football fan with a weakness for tactics and philosophy behind every play, this book really hit the spot for me. And there's arguably no better person to analyse when it comes to tactical mastery than Pep Guardiola.

And he really doesn't disappoints. The book eloquently portray the complete picture of Pep Guardiola, from the days of his childhood, to La Masía, to becoming the captain of Barcelona, to exile, to assembling what in my opinion as the most exciting team ever play the game of football (Barcelona 2008-2012, that won 14 trophies in just under 4 years). All the struggles, the hard works, the fighting, the opportunities, the doubts, the glories, the pressure, the ecstatic joys, the meticulously planned rules, the passion for the club all written grippingly by Guillem Balague.

The same template is repeated with the coverage of Pep's time in Bayern München (2013-2016, that won 7 trophies in 3 years) where Pep’s footballing philosophy was implemented with much greater varieties and insane evolution of the modern game. For instance, at one match he deployed a 2-3-5 formation that left only 2 defenders, Xabi Alonso as a holding midfielder plus 2 full backs that turned into midfielders, and the remaining 5 as strikers (a pyramid formation last used in the 1890s!), or another match where Bayern changed formation 7 times, or that match against Juventus where Pep used 4 wingers at once (and won).

The book also illustrate the difficulties of managing star players and their inflated egos, especially when there are more than 1 star competing for the same spots, as well as the difficulties of transferring Pep's philosophy onto several rigid or entitled players. And it also portrays a vivid picture of the pressure that football managers constantly receive from the fans, the club hierarchies, and the media.

While the football stories are fantastic, I actually learn a lot more from the way Guardiola conduct himself. From his discipline, intellect, and respect for others, to the way he carry himself in many different situations, to how he meticulously planning ahead of the opportunities and risks, how he revamp the club to embody his footballing philosophy (even arranging different lunch seating all the time to ensure no small groups formed within the squad), down to practicing the small specific moves after analysing the opponent and/or the situation. Lessons that can be implemented in many other areas of life.

Perhaps my favourite part of the book is when on top of having learned from being managed by top coaches such as Cruyff, Robson, Van Gaal, Mazzone, and Capello, before taking the job as a coach Guardiola still travels around Argentina to learn a lot from coaching legends Ricardo La Volpe, César Luis Menotti, and of course the fabled meeting with Marcelo Bielsa where he spent 11 hours in Bielsa’s villa and came out of it bringing a book full of notes from cover to cover. My other favourite part of the book is at the very last chapter when Pep talked on Catalan radio in memory of Johan Cruyff that has just recently died, which reveals a lot about Pep's footballing philosophy that is heavily influenced by Cruyff's way of thinking.

The only drawback for me is the untidy timeline of the book. Yes it reads like a documentary, with all the back and forth in the timeline, which is fine. Exciting, in fact. But it is exactly because of this that many topics become overlapping, with the unnecessary intention of seeing several events from different vantage points (from Pep, from the players, from the club president, etc).

For example, it occurs in the story of Pep vs Mourinho, which was already told in the early chapters but then repeated in part III chapter 6, and it is also occurs in the story of problems with Zlatan Ibrahimović that was scattered across the chapters that makes it confusing in which season did he exactly played for Barca. But it is perhaps most obviously occur in the story of the end of Pep's tenure in Barca, which was told at such gruesome length right at the beginning of the book, which then proceeded to be re-told again 4-5 more times.

But nevertheless, in the end of the day it is a beautifully written book, a very thorough book. A book that paid attention to so much details that Pep himself probably could not express his life and his philosophy this well. It is a book that teaches us a lot about the modern game of football and its arguably maestro inventor. And it is a very passionate book written by someone who clearly live and breathe football.

The book ends with one chapter about Pep's move to Manchester City in 2016 and his potential set up for the English Premier League team. And as we all now know in 2021, Pep eventually has a tremendous success at City, with this season the club is on the way of winning Pep's 3rd league crown, his 9th trophy overall in 5 seasons. And so, his success story continues.

Ordinarily, I am not a fan of the hagiographical biography, but in this case I am making an exception. Pep Guardiola is one of those people that almost every man over 40 wants to be, or emulate, so it's sort of OK. The Manager of first Barcelona, then Bayern Munich, and now Manchester City's superteam, Guardiola is a great coach, was a very good player- and seems to have the "classy European renaissance man about town" character that one cannot help but admire. In Pep Guardiola- Another Way of Winning- Guillem Balague, a prominent Spanish Football writer and commentator traces the history- and tries to find where the brilliance comes from. He's not that successful, but it is an interesting voyage, and one can learn a lot about the European Soccer world- and how it has developed in the 21st Century.

I came back soccer after the passing of my parents, when I discovered a world of British Commentators was active in the wee hours of the morning in America- as I would be awake with a comforting cup of tea. As a former youth coach, I found this dashing chap on the Man City sideline to be very interesting- especially as he seemed able to balance a galaxy of stars in his locker room. As the Footie world drew me in further, this Catalan cat appeared to have an answer for any challenge. And always looked more at home in his snappy ensembles than opposing Managers (We'd call their role Coach in the States). This book certainly helped me understand where he comes from- but not so much the source of his Strategic and tactical excellence. Still I have to say its a fun ride and does inform the reader on a number of other levels. Well worth a read- but not all the answers to the questions it raises.

There are some adult themes, but zero graphic violence, so this is a fair book for a Junior Reader over about 10/11 years. For my Gamer/Modeler/Military Enthusiast readers- not much here- as it's a bit hard to draw strategic parallels between tika-taka football and either real conflicts or those on the tabletop. If one is football modeler there are some Diorama ideas- but that's about it. If Balague can't give us the real answers- we certainly can't apply them elsewhere. Still I know that many gamers also have caught the Soccer bug- so this topic will find some receptive folks. A good but not totally fulfilling read.

I'd imagine this is often described as 'comprehensive' and was mostly about Guardiola's tenure at Barcelona, although it does touch on his playing career and Bayern stint as well. Unlike poorer and lazier biographies, the manager is always the focus and so this is a genuinely insightful book.

Balague has conducted interviews with Guardiola and a lot of his players for this book, and this really shows as his personality is examined and there are personal accounts rather than just newspaper excerpts. Together this adds up to an admiring, but not fawning, portrait of a very successful manager. Balague steers clear of listing results and instead focuses on fewer, more critical events where Guardiola has a direct influence, which give a good impression of how he acts on a day-to-day basis as manager, which is often missing in manager biographies.

Perhaps a more critical tone could have been employed at times though, as Pep and the author both admit he is imperfect, without ever really giving any examples of his mistakes, brushing off 'having a few regrets' without expanding on them. The only mistake alluded to is Guardiola asking his Bayern team how they'd like to play against Madrid, or 'my mistake was not imposing my methods' in other words. The Bayern section is also weaker than the detailed Barcelona story, and I never fully understood how he was considered a bit of a weird outsider but on the receiving end of very generous offers to extend his contract. Not only does this lack some of the Barcelona detail, but the new edition doesn't seem to edit the last ending particularly well, changing tenses and in need of amending to make it more polished.

That doesn't mean the Bayern section was poor, just that it didn't match the very strong original, and there are lots of details that I've picked up from other journalists elsewhere - unless Balague has not referenced his sources, he clearly has a lot of very good contacts close to Guardiola - that meant this was illuminating, and a much better biography than average for a figure in football.

The biography Pep Guardiola “Another way of winning” by Guillem Balagué talks about the life of Pep Guardiola and how his style of coaching transformed his squads into some of the best ever seen. The author does a job of focusing on Pep's early life and how many of the things that he teaches his players were taught to him at a young age. The author does a good job Because at the beginning of the biography talks about Peps childhood and then throughout the biography he refers to events and lessons learned as a kid and as a player. The author describes how being a player has formed the way he coaches by taking the time to talk about the events after he left Barcelona as a player and when he returned as a coach. Another thing that I liked about this Biography is that it gave me a new understanding on how he was able to coach arguably the best team ever in history and the other strong sides he was the coach off. The author focuses on the things he changed good and bad and how he completely changed the way that his players would prepare for games. This stood out to me because Pep did something completely new and the author went into detail on what he changed and used his four amazing years of coaching Barcelona as evidence. One last thing that I liked about this biography was that it talked about his rivalry with Mourinho and how it evolved throughout the years of working together then playing each other. One thing that I didn't like about this biography was that it only talked about his playing career at Barcelona a little and I would have liked to see a bit more about some of the games he played and how he was influenced by Cruyff. Overall I rate this book a 5/5 as it is one of the best books I have read and the author did an amazing Job of showing the accomplishments of Pep Guardiola, someone who I greatly admire.
