Oh look, Izana’s now king, and he’s still causing problems. Yay. 😒😂

Honestly I thought the coronation was kinda boring. In fact, I found most of this volume boring except for the very end with the bandit attack. That was great—I wish more action and tense situations were in this series!

And sadly I feel Shirayuki and Zen’s relationship has grown stagnant and nothing has really happened or changed or grown between them like in the earlier volumes. ☹️

Not my favorite volume, but I will still keep reading.

‼️Content‼️

Language: damn; what the; crap

Violence: knives are thrown in front of bandits to stop them

Drug/Alcohol: characters drink; some powder paralyzes and knocks out people

Other: stealing

An impending coronation brings the Queen back to Castle Wistal and lots of familiar faces on top of that. Izana has never gone out of his way to make Zen’s life easier and it appears that his becoming king definitely isn’t going to lead to any changes of heart...

Another solid instalment of a solid series. This remains an aggressively dependable bunch of characters to spend time with. I appreciate the work that Akiduki has spent building these people and their relationships.

It pays off even when it’s an event, Izana’s coronation, that I couldn’t care less about. That’s totally on me - the only thing I like less than pomp is circumstance, so I’d say you’ll be in heaven with all the gorgeously illustrated pageantry. It’s still a ton of fun seeing all the preparation that goes into it.

Something else I have noticed and come to appreciate about this series is how good it is at making it clear that a fairy tale may not be a, well, fairy tale. Sure Zen and Shirayuki are in love, but they both have very important duties that constantly keep them apart.

In fact, we see that come to a head at the end of this book, which sets yet another obstacle in their path. It’s easy to see that as something deliberate by Izana, but really it makes a lot of sense in terms of the kingdom, so it’s hard to fault him doing the whole “needs of the many” thing.

If there’s a negative here, it might be the glacial pace of the romance, which doesn’t bother me much, but some people might mind it. I wish we’d seen a lot more of the Queen too - she seems fascinating and her aversion to rule was a nice bit of character work.

4 stars. When you enjoy the characters this much, you’re happy to spend the time with them even during a slower moment. Not the best this series has offered, but I still really enjoyed it.

Statt mit Worten werden die Gefühle der Figuren oft einfach mit Blicken oder Gesten dargestellt. Das ist so wundervoll ausdrucksstark. <3

Die Krönungszeremonie und alles drumherum war auch toll!

This series once again brings about a major twist with this book. With Izana’s coronation, there is a lot of excitement at the palace. I was mostly excited because we finally get to see the Queen. It did make me question what it everyone’s ages, though, because her design makes her look like 25 and I am still wondering how old is Izana himself. There are some clues as to Izana’s age, with some flashbacks about Zen’s childhood, when their father died, and when Izana had to step up and take up duties alongside his mother because she was overworked. The relationships in the royal family, at least from Zen’s side seems very formal, though, even though she greets them warmly.

Shirayuki, by the way, in recognition of her title as Tanbarun’s royal friend, is given the duty of playing host to Raj, which means she can also be his plus-one to the coronation. Their relationship has come so far, considering where it started. Then we have the actual coronation, where Zen has the important role of being the one to crown Izana. Visually, it is a treat, with new beautiful outfits on display - for all of them. We also get some hints into Izana’s life, as he seems to give Haki (the Head of the LIlias Academic Distict) some importance at the coronation; I wondered if it is a subtle hint about them dating, and then he does ask her preference when she remarks on his hairstyle which made me think they are. It also makes her comments to Shirayuki, regarding the brothers, in the Lilias arc more insightful.

After coronation, as things are getting more hectic in the palace with everyone resuming duties and stuff, and Zen getting a bigger workload, Izana drops a new shocker into the reader’s laps. I won’t say because spoilers, but really dude, so soon???

Side note: Shirayki blushing when she sees Kiki in her miliatry uniform? Girl, same.

It was interesting to see the coronation ceremony for Prince--sorry, KING--Izana. Just one question: Why does the queen look practically the same age as her sons? 😂
I wasn't expecting Shirayuki's transfer at all! This development makes me very curious to see what's next. Is she really going to be separated from the other characters for a long period of time?
Side note: At the beginning of this series, I didn't care one bit for Prince Raj. Now...well, I have to admit, everytime he's in a scene, his awkwardness makes me smile.

Good to see Izana become king and his majesty grows into becoming king. Yet the relationship between zen his aids and Shirayuki doesn’t seem it did not grow as a unit. Characters seemed a little too modest, in this volume. Volume 12 was a good read but it went a little flat. Good that Izana becomes king and that Shirayuki gets resigned and all. I like to continue reading the rest of the series to see where the story goes.

Another fantastic volume in the series. This volume has the potential to shift how the rest of the series is going to play out. We finally have Prince Izana crowned king, and now things are shifting and changing in the palace and the kingdom.
I'm on pins and needles waiting for the next volume!

Chapters 50-52 The King's Coronation
The considerable age gap and the fact that Izana had to step up quite early to help his over-worked mother manage the kingdom makes it easier to understand the dynamics between the siblings :
Izana's parent like approach of "let him figure things out by himself" all while low-key pampering him, and Zen's hard intent on becoming strong enough to support the person he admires the most without openly expressing his feelings.

Chapters 53-55 The Transfer to The North
As soon as he takes office, king Izana transfers Shirayuki and Ryuu to the north for two years. This might look like one more "evil deed" made by the "annoying older brother", but in fact, it's the first step in paving the way for the young couple.
To understand his actions, one needs to understand the politics of feudal societies. A lord can only rule if he's backed by his vassals. And these vassals would only give their allegiance to a strong ruler. This strength is usually aquired by gaining the support of a strong noble house through a marriage alliance.
Since Izana chose to support his brother's choice of taking a nameless, politically "worthless" bride, a different path needs to be taken to help the couple build the trust and influence needed to stand on firm grounds and become a strength to the kingdom.
Hence, without waisting any time, he sends Shirayuki first to the region intended to become Zen's domain in the future. This also demonstrates his trust in Shirayuki's character and capabilities.

No estoy segura de que me guste mucho que Zen y Shirayuki no puedan estar siempre juntos pero quizás es lo mejor para que así ella pueda con sus propios méritos ganarse un puesto cerca de él *-*

Let's begin!

Coronation
We find out who the "she" that Izana and Zen mentioned in volume 11. I was right on her title, but I was wrong on her relationship to the boys. Izana and Zen had a lovely for them heart-to-heart chat. I will discuss this more on how it relates to a different topic. The pages that cover the coronation were beautiful! There were these two panels where Izana and Zen looked at each other that was just so beautiful, pure, warm, and touching. There was also an "introduction" to another character. The reason for quotations is we get a name, but there was no formal introduction or special buildup. This character just appeared, but it seems like this character will be very relevant to Izana.

King Izana: Villain, Antihero, Hero, or Annoying Sage?
We have seen Izana throughout the series. At times, he seems antagonistic, but in other times he seems to side with Zen and Shirayuki. So what is he in terms of archetypes? According to Literary Terms.net, a villain is someone who causes diabolical schemes that causes harm or ruin. This seems to be Izana in the scene about the lords who were causing problems for the kingdom, but Izana did not let that hurt the people under the lords. He never spent the money that they gave to him. That does not sound like a villain.

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, an antihero is a protagonist who lacks the heroic qualities of the protagonist. Wikipedia defines those qualities as idealism, courage, and morality and also says an antihero does moral things for the wrong or selfish reasons. From what I can tell, Izana does not act for his own interests. Everything is in the name of the kingdom, which makes his actions toward Zen and Shirayuki a little bit more palatable.

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a hero is the principal character of a piece of work or someone admired for achievements or noble qualities. While Izana does not fulfill the first definition, he does satisfied the second. It was mentioned in this volume that Izana was viewed as a monarch before he was the King.

The annoying sage is archetype that I slightly made up. It is a wise person that seems to know things and helps the character in the most indirect ways. They say something thoughtful or wise then they vanish. This is seen in Yoda from Star Wars, Master Oogway from Kung Fu Panda, Benjamin Franklin from 1776, Jiraiya from Naruto, etc. Izana seems to have this role for me. He seems to have this master plan, but he doesn't tell anyone about it. For me, this is how Prince Izana acts. In his heart-to-heart with Zen, there was a flashback that showed Izana talking to a young Zen and Izana's response about Zen's skill just said annoying sage to me. His sage tendencies is shown when he is with you Zen and Shirayuki. Also Izana said something to Zen that seems to hint that he stands with Zen. I think he has a grand plan that will not only satisfy his passion for keeping the kingdom safe, but will also satisfy Zen and Shirayuki's plans.

Plot Twist
There was a plot development with Shirayuki catalyzed by Izana. While it may seem malicious, I do not think it was. Why grant Zen's request in the previous volume, if he would eventually do this? I think this is all part of a plan that will make all parties please, but I think it maybe rough in the middle.

Last Page
What?! I totally agree with Zen's face on this one.

Verdict: I cannot wait for the next volume!

Goodness, this was an emotional roller coaster!!

I felt SO many different things and felt my eyes get a little misty on multiple accounts!

One thing I want to say first though is that I STRONGLY second Prince Raj's words of telling Shirayuki that there is no one like her because there really isn't. I NEVER would have thought I would deeply come to like Raj given how this series started, but he has joined the cast of characters I deeply love. <3 He is still himself in many many ways, but he has also grown and I admire his friendship with Shirayuki and how it has pushed him to be a better prince. And in turn, I admire how Raj's promises and declarations to prove himself as a prince and friend have spurred Shirayuki to give her all. And in turn (again), I LOVEEEE that though Zen has his moments of jealousy (which I think is 100% normal and actually LIKE seeing) when Raj tells Zen to tell Shirayuki that her promise is fulfilled, Zen tells him he's not that petty (based on what happened) and anyone who would be of their friendship (Shirayuki and Raj) then they are not qualified to be Shirayuki's friend. All of this makes me teary-eyed because the friendships in this series are so very beautiful and moving.

Another character I never expected to end up really liking is Izana. While I am NOT happy with a decision he makes near the end, I was greatly touched by the coronation ceremony. He and Zen have a unique relationship, but I think this volume really spotlighted that though they bump heads, they are brothers and deeply care for one another. Seeing Zen himself even get emotional was everything. *cries*

I enjoyed our gang being able to have their own party of sorts and spend time together after everything. Honestly, those are some of my favorite chapters because it's just relaxing and fun and there is something so special about them. They aren't really doing anything but laughing and talking, but I think it shows a very beautiful part of how wonderful friendship is and that you don't need to do grand or flashy things to have an interesting story.

Now with that said though, THAT LAST CHAPTER! :o :o :o I AM NOT READY! I am nervous and a little scared of what is going to happen moving forward even though I have strong confidence in the people it affects the most. I just…this is unexpected and deeply felt Zen's shock.

Hoping things will be okay for everyone as this story moves forward!

"Snow White with the Red Hair" is fantasy-type manga that takes place in a faraway kingdom. At the beginning of the tale, Shirayuki wants to become an herbalist, but the prince of Tanbarun is planning to make her his concubine! She makes a run for it and encounters Zen, the second prince of the nearby kingdom of Wisteria. Zen helps her escape from her plight and escorts her to his kingdom, where she becomes a full-fledged court herbalist. The rest of the story follows their adventures together (and apart!) as they develop deeper feelings for one another and work to overcome the gap between their social stations.

What impressed me the most about this story was how balanced the characters were. Often, characters are written with extreme characteristics and stereotypes. While this can be funny and distinctive, it can also get old after a while. It was refreshing to see that Shirayuki wasn’t a helpless princess, nor was she refusing assistance. She certainly did want to do things for herself and on her own, but she wasn’t above accepting help when she needed it. Even Zen, despite his stubbornness and rule-flouting tendencies, didn’t just rush off to do whatever he wanted all the time. Instead, he faithfully played the role of prince and followed his duty rather than his emotions.

Personally, I find it so much easier to connect with a character who knows how to flex and adapt as their situation changes. Plus, it was so exciting to see these characters build their relationship the “right way,” by working through the rules and customs of their world so they could perform the roles they’d been given to the best of their abilities.

I have more to say on this series (and other books!) in my blog! Check it out here:

I find the friendship between Prince Raj and Lady Shirayuki to be incredibly precious. They started off as a Casanova prince and a commoner girl who fled her own country to escape the clutches of said prince who desired her as a concubine. They’ve steadily progressed in their relationship, going from certainly not on good terms, to something rocky and unsure, to awkward friends, and now they’ve cultivated a tender and loving friendship that is built to last, and built to forever support.

As Akiduki-sensei intended, Izana really did look princely on the cover when I picked it up, and kingly by the time I put it down. It’s been a pleasure to see so many characters grow in their positions in this volume, but I’m also filled with anxiety at the extreme life changes Izana is making toward our characters. But I want to believe that the unexpected will happen in a way allowing Prince Zen and Lady Shirayuki to remain be each other’s sides. I just can’t imagine the two of them being separated for years and that being written into the story without a timeskip. But even if that were the case, these two would not lose any affection for one another. I’m sure of it. But have they essentially broken up now? They both have to move on with their lives and in different cities, and it seems they’ve discussed that. But while Shirayuki is trying to take the positive approach, I can tell they’re both broken up about it. Zen is taking it very hard in particular.
It’s going to be a while until I can read volume 13… What ever will I do about this cliffhanger?!

Her Majesty is stepping down & handing he throne to her oldest son, Prince Izana. It's Zen's job to crown his brother as the new King of Clarines. All neighboring royalty is invited to attend. Princess Rona wants to attend but her father refuses to allow her to attend.
Thanks to Prince Raji, Shirayuki is allowed to attend the crowning ceremony with him & act as his escort as well. All the staff & guards is shocked by this especially the castle worker who insulted her earlier.
Queen Dowager Haruto Wistalia soon leaves after the crowning ceremony since she can't spend much time in the castle, or her illness returns.
There's a massive party throughout Clarines.
Few days later Ryuu & Shirayuki learn that they will be transferred to Lyrias for at least 2 years where Ryuu will be assigned to Wilant Castle. Zen's aides & Obi knew about it before Shirayuki & decided to let her tell Zen, who became the last to know.

After the rather depressing volume 11, volume 12 was very refreshing!
Volume 12 takes place four months later, and if you read my review for volume 11 you will remember that Prince Izana is becoming King!! All sorts of people come to the castle to watch the coronation, such as her majesty! Izana's and Zen's mom!! Which is the first time you meet her, so that was really cool. Not to mention Raj visits the castle, for the coronation. And lord Hisame, much to the displeasure of Kiki.
Shirayuki then, (as promised) shows Raj how her hair has grown. After the coronation Zen holds a late-night drinking party for the gang. Much to the approval of Obi!

But, I guess true joy can't last forever with this group. Because a couple of weeks after the coronation (I am beginning to di-like the word coronation. If I have to type it one more time-)
King Izana tells Shirayuki she and Ryu are moving to Lilias....

Prince Izana is about to be crowned King Izana as his and Zen's mother steps down from her position as Queen Dowager. It's a glorious day of celebrating for the Kingdom of Clarines.

But with a new King, comes new policies and management. Everything is about to change.

This volume was cute and adorable but not extremely meaningful, mostly fluff and sweetness, until you get to the end where something more serious happens. But even that seems not-so-serious. Shirayuki is still the practical and logical and honest and an overall good female protagonist. But there's little... conflict, and the conflict that does arise seems to be glossed over or just fixed. In other words...kinda boring.

An okay overall but visually pleasing volume. I love Izana on the cover - so beautiful and blue! Chapters 50 and 51 were my favorite chapter illustration - so lovely! The first half of the story (the coronation) was very choppy. There’s not much to comment on, but there were plenty of moments that brought a smile to my face and the art was visually pleasing. Also there was one attendant I didn’t expect to see but duh! Obviously she’d be there. I don’t remember any mention of her in past volumes. With the change of rulers comes the beginning of drastic change that greatly surprised me. It’s quite the shift. I’m curious how it will impact the story going forward.

Are we sure that Shirayuki loves Zen?! These two are way too calm about her moving away! Although, at the end of this volume, it does seem that we will see their fear…
It sucks that Zen is the prince because he has no time to be with Shirayuki. And when they do have a chance, they always hang with the group instead. Where’s the romance?? Lol. If you’re reading this series for the friendships, well, there’s plenty of it! I’m all for the friendships (this series does a great job of it) but just a little more romance please? Convince me that Shirayuki and Zen belong together.

Review:
This volume had a lot of new content in it that the anime didn't have. And I really liked reading it. This volume leaves off on a cliffhanger, and normally that wouldn't be a problem but my local library doesn't have the rest of the series and now I have to either wait until they buy it (because of course, I asked them to buy them) or, I need to have a large sack of money fall from the sky so I can just buy them myself.

What the hell does the new King Izana think he is doing?! Is he testing Shirayuki and Zen again? Is he trying to force Zen to claim Shirayuki so she stays in the palace?! I can't believe they are just going to separate for an undefined time!! Will Zen send Obi with her to protect her?! And that cliffhanger should be illegal!
