How to escape marriage to an odious man . . . Leave the state. Lorraine Stuart joins a group of women traveling to Tarnation, Texas, a town with numerous bachelors but no unmarried women. She longs to meet a man who will admire her and the writing ability that has her published in several publications, by a pseudonym, of course. Just her luck, out of all those in Tarnation, she falls for the most stubborn man she’s ever met. But the handsome newspaper owner is the only one who makes her heart flutter. Grant Pettigrew has worked hard to establish the Tarnation Gazette. He is intrigued by Lorraine but he won’t let a woman write for his newspaper. Besides, he can’t afford to hire anyone yet. The redhead is gorgeous and ignites dreams of family, but he’s never met a more obstinate woman. Will two immovable forces join to form a forever love?

Writers come in all shapes

Lorraine didn't want her father to marry her off to a despicable man so her mother helped her escape. Lorraine went west with Lydia and others to start a new life. Lorraine became friends quickly with those around her. She had her eye on the newspaper man and his business. Since writing was what defined her she quickly adapted to her role. See for yourself what a great historical book this is and find out what happens with Lorraine and her writings.

The town of Tarnation, Texas has no single females of marriageable age. The single men of the town are threatening to move to larger towns to find a wife which would cause Tarnation to die out. Young widow Lydia Harrison travels to her home state of Virgina where she places an ad in the newpaper and interviews several young women who are interested in moving west to marry. Seven young women ultimately head west with Lydia and her friend Sophie; each girl escaping something or someone and looking for acceptance and love.

A well written series with interesting characters. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series as well.
