On the run with a stolen teddy bear and a couple hundred dollars in cash, Alex’s life takes a strange turn when he crashes his car in a freak accident. Stranded in the desert with no water, he is rescued by a crow that leads him to the home of Lars and Lars’ five-year-old niece Holly. Lars is a man with secrets, and he’d just as soon Alex was on his way, but delays in the repair of Alex’s car compel him to offer Alex a place to stay in exchange for babysitting services. Alex accepts the offer and soon falls head over heels for Holly and the mysterious Crow. Over the course of several weeks, Alex finds himself embracing a life he’d only dreamed of. A life of warmth and comfort—and a passion that almost makes him forget the past he’s running from. Almost. As Lars and Alex fall in love, secrets about Lars and Holly, and a dark danger pursuing Alex, threaten to destroy their new family. Alex was rescued once by the quirky crow he now lives with. Will Crow be able to save the treasure trove of a family he’s collected one more time? This is a sweet and sexy gay contemporary romance with lots of love, a little angst, a little drama and suspense, and a HEA.
Kayleigh’s stories are tales of struggle and pain, loss and despair. Love is won in the battle to rise out of the depths of darkness. Victory is in the sweet bliss of happily ever after.
Once upon a time Kayleigh hid out in a cold dark garage reading a book her parents forbid her to read. She was nine years old. The book? Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin, a story of love between two men–well, actually the story was a little more complicated than that, but hey, she was nine.
In the dark of the garage, a light, a passion, a sheer joy for love in all its manifestations awoke. And love between two men–Hot!
Kayleigh’s men are often broken, always brave, and always memorable.
Oh. My. Goodness! This was such a great book! It positively dripped with atmosphere. It reminded me of a Tennessee Williams play…hot, dramatic, sweaty, and sexy as hell. Kayleigh Sky has written a slow burn, stunning story that really stuck with me after I read the last page, and I am so impressed.
Alex is understandably skittish. He’s trying to escape a bad situation and get as far away as possible. He, in no way, shape, or form, wants to be stuck in a small town with 250 dollars and no car. He’s young, and he’s not used to kindness, so when Lars and Holly take him in, he’s not sure what to do. I liked Alex’s vulnerability, but I also liked his growth. He didn’t want to care for Lars and Holly, but it was almost as if he couldn’t help himself.
Lars tore at my heartstrings. His main focus in life is Holly. He is so caught up, he doesn’t realize he’s not fulfilling his own needs. I could almost feel the loneliness radiating from him. He fixes people’s cars, and he tends to Holly’s needs. He’s an artist and paints, but there doesn’t seem to be any joy in his life. When he realizes he’s falling for Alex, he is taken aback, but he feels such passion. I loved reading about his discovery of himself.
This story didn't need to be a gazillion pages long to be well told, I don't think it needed to be any longer than what it was. It was cute and a well-written romance. But, I'm still scratching my head about Crow.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was intrigued by this story and was very excited to get a chance to review it. Alex is pretty much running away from his life when he is in an accident. He is led to Lars by Crow and Lars takes Alex into his home to heal and sleep. Their relationship really starts off slowly and I could see how they feel for each other but they both avoided talking about their feelings or anything past Alex’s car getting fixed I couldn’t help but feel for Haley when she was confused about Alex staying. Both kept a lot of secrets from each other throughout the story but seem to be open with each other after everything came out.
While I enjoyed this story I continually got confused as to whose thoughts I was reading, it seemed to jump between Lars and Alex regularly but I couldn’t always tell when. I also had trouble feeling connected with these characters as their minds seem to make big jumps at times and I felt like I was watching them from a distance.
I'm marking it as other paranormal but I have no clue if that crow was just weird or some kind of spirit. I found the whole dreamy feeling, everyone in a fog, moving through life, never really saying what the hell is going on rather annoying. I know that's a personal thing. Some people like that whole atmospheric type of writing, I just prefer a more straight-forward narrative style, so I found myself frustrated by trying to figure out what was going on. So I think your enjoyment of this will depend on your prose preferences. It just didn't work so well for me.
This was a darling little story. I really enjoyed it. Little bit of mystery and secrets with a whole lot of sweetness and love, and a weird bird, lol.
Alex is on the run. Things in his life have gotten bad and he had to get out of there. He's in the middle of nowhere when this...thing...flies out of the blue and he swerves to avoid hitting it. Which of course causes him to wreck. He gets out of the car after sustaining even more injuries and follows a crow. The crow which caused him to wreck. He feels delirious following this bird, but something tells him to follow. Dry mouthed and seriously hurt he collapses. When he wakes he sees the most beautiful blue eyes he has ever seen in the eyes of his rescuer.
Lars rescues this red haired beautiful boy that Crow led to him. There's just something about Alex that makes him want to protect him. But trying to get Alex to open up and find out why he's on the run is virtually impossible. Lars knows about secrets. He has some of his own. Alex doesn't have the money to fix his car so Lars makes him a deal. He will work on the car if Alex will help him babysit his niece and run errands. Alex agrees.
Alex and Lars run neck and neck on who my favorite is. Alex is so sweet and vulnerable. Almost innocent. Even though his life wasn't that great before he ran, he really is innocent. Lars is this broad shouldered, alpha-like male who just wants to protect everyone he meets. He takes care of his 5-yr old niece, Holly, and would do anything for her. Both of these guys just melt my heart. The passion in them both lays underneath and is just waiting to burst. As they get to know each other, the secrets they have begin to come out and they fall even more in love with each other. And it's so sweet and heartwarming. When Alex's past becomes his present, Lars realizes even more he can't do without Alex in their lives and does everything he can to save Alex. And life quickly becomes all they both could ever want. Someone to love and love them in return. And a fresh start.
Definitely recommend reading this to anyone who wants a little angst and a wonderful HEA.
I didn’t know exactly what I was getting into when I started this book. I certainly wasn’t expecting to be blown away, yet that’s just what happened. The characters were engaging and very well written. I was immediately drawn in by Alex. He is the kind of character that you just want to win even if you can see he’s going to have to fight for the right to his HEA. He was so sweet and honest, yet afraid and running hard from his recent past.
Lars was totally different from the characters that I usually read. He has his secrets and they are biggies, yet you can just tell that he’s good at the core and you want him to find his little bit of happy. He’s that broken character that I love to watch as he struggles to find his way. He wants to be happy, but doesn’t think that he deserves it. I’ll say it again… My. Favorite. Trope! His darling niece Holly is the absolute icing on the cake. I love, love, love her. She’s so special, and I know she will be everyone’s fave in this story.
Last but certainly not least is Crow. Now, I know what you’re thinking… how can a bird be included in with the MCs? Trust me, this one can and should!
This story is billed as a romance and a suspense, but I’ve added the tag mystical. There’s a heavy dose of it to go along with a sweet romance and a great suspense! Honestly, there’s brilliant plot twists and turns as you try to solve the mystery and watch Alex and Lars work to heal themselves and try to have their HEA.
I voluntarily received and reviewed an advance readers copy of this book....... This had a considerably compelling plot, which I found to be an enjoyable read. Alex is running from an abusive ex boyfriend, but his car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. A Crow finds him and ends up bringing him to Lars, an ex cop who he ends up staying with while his car gets fixed. I actually didn't see any editing issues, so it was a well written story with an even pace. My favorite characters were Holly (Lars' little niece), who was simply adorable, and the crow who was extremely intelligent and even life saving when needed. I loved how Lars and Alex finally communicated the issues in their past(wishing they'd have done sooner) and then things really happened from there. Alex's ex boyfriend collected teddy bears, and I enjoyed the creative little touch in this portion of the story. Overall, this was a sweet and enthralling read. :)
Kind of a slow dark romance. Two main characters with “secrets” about their lives; Alex with his abusive drug dealing ex, and Lars, the former sheriff with the tragedy of his brother and sister-in-law hanging over him. I didn’t find a lot of depth to the characters or storyline. It was like everything was being told through a haze. When I started reading this, I thought it was going to be some kind of paranormal story but we never really learn anything about Crow other than he is creepily smart and has impeccable timing. The story builds to a rather anticlimactic mini-drama and the HEA fell rather flat.
I devoured this book in 2 hours flat! The basic story is pure classic m/m romance (very well done, I might add) but the hint of paranormal provided by Crow really put it over the top for me. Super cool!
