This is the third book in H.Y. Hanna's "Bewitched by Chocolate" series, and what a cute series it is!
The recurring characters are Caitlin, her cousin Pomona, the handsome Lord James Fitzroy, the Widow Mags, her daughter Bertha and teenage grandaughter Evie, the vampire Viktor, and a cute little kitten named Nibs.
The Widow Mags is a witch with powerful spells, her granddaugher Evie is an up-and-coming witch who has no control over her powers yet, and Viktor is a very elderly vampire who looks out for Caitlin but sometimes is more of a nuisance than a help.
This time around we have the murder of a teenage schoolgirl, a classmate of Evie's, who bullies Evie mercilessly. When the girl is found dead, the police's main suspect is none other than Evie. Caitlin is sure that Evie didn't do it, although all evidence points to her. Caitlin believes the murderer is one of two people: a man who has been hanging around the chocolate shop wanting to steal a powerful ingredient that the Widow Mags uses in her chocolates or a professor whose ramblings are so outrageous that no one believes anything he says. But who is really the murderer, and how can she prove it?
In this book we also meet a new character that Caitlin befriends, a very gentle bull named Ferdinand who is very lonely because he is rejected by all the cows. I hope Ferdinand comes back in future stories--just like the little kitten (Nibs) and the dog (Bran), Ferdinand is a very endearing character.
I have read all the books in Miss Hanna's other series, and as much as I love her other series, this series has become my favorite.
The murder mystery is fully resolved in this book, so it is a standalone story and you don't need to buy her other books, but there are some side stories that continue from book to book, such as the hint of a future romance between Caitlin and Lord James, and the back story of Caitlin's birth mother. However, the side stories connect from one book to the next, and are interesting enough that you might want to follow them. And this series is so cute, you'll probably want to read them all anyway.
