Fortinbras has one aim in life, revenge. When he was ten years old, he swore an oath to kill the man who murdered his family. He’s given up everything, including love, to pursue his goal. The only thing he has left is Orange Hope, the town he protects.
In this dystopian, action novella, 22nd century earth isn’t advanced or civilized. The ravages of natural and human disasters have destroyed governments and societies. There is little left for the few people who struggle to stay alive. When an invasion threatens to destroy Orange Hope, Fortinbras moves to protect his town. He’s committed to the fight, but can he save the town? He’s willing to give his life, but the cost might be higher than he realizes . . .
The most surprising thing about me is that I've lived in the jungles of South America. When I casually mention that people are shocked. I'm not sure why because that fact seems natural to me.
Less interesting is that I was born and raised in California, have traveled and lived in South America, and have lived in several states and visited 38 states.
What all that means is I'm pretty opened minded and like new experiences.
FYI: most authors are sort of boring. We spend most of our time alone, sitting at a computer writing or reading. I'm not an exception.
Here are the tedious details:
I write young adult, science fiction, fantasy stories with a touch of adventure and mystery. I read almost anything as long as there's a good story. I drink too much coffee. I play Word of Warcraft for fun and relaxation.
Fortinbras is a well written novella. It flows well and has a good pace. Most people can read it in one sitting. And, it is well edited for an indie publication.
Fortinbras is the name of the main character. He is a Legate - a warrior librarian - a guardian of culture awaiting the restoration of civilization in a post-apocalyptic world.
The story is set in Orange Hope - a city of survivors. The novella did not allow for deep development of the city and its politics, but the plot involves a power struggle between factions. The ending is kind of vague - leaving an opening for more stories related to this world and the main characters. And, I'd love to see more development of this world and these characters!
Overall, it is an interesting read. I don't want to give it all away, so I won't share more details.
My only criticism is that the profanity was completely unnecessary for this story. It really didn't serve to heighten a sense of frustration or anger in the characters. It didn't serve to underscore any particular situation as more difficult or dangerous. So, really, it served no purpose.
If you liked Justice, you must read Fortinbras. It's some years later, our characters are older, more mature, more jaded. The city is going to be attacked and Fortinbras is trying to warn everyone, then he finds out the true depth of the threat and he and his crew from Justice go to work.
Part of what I loved about this next installation is we get to know Fortinbras even more. Archangel and Corday aren't as prevalent, but there's a lot more history, more explanation as to whyFort is who he is. We find out who some of the movers and shakers are, more world building. It's all growing into a wonderful 'verse I'm excited to read more in. Plus, there's a Jo, who I love. Can't wait to see more of her.
Another wonderful installment of The Fortinbras world. Can't wait to read the next one!
Fortinbras delivers a fun read by the way of a punch to the gut that wakes you up to our own world and the road we walk that could easily end up leading to his world. The character becomes you as you read it, and in no time, you care. I loved the characters, and even the villains. I look forward to more stories from the author.
I jumped straight into this novella after reading the Justice short story. I gulped them both down on Saturday morning with a cup of tea and was sad when I was finished. I was also starving, but couldn't bear to stop to get breakfast - it was that much fun! Quick and easy, but keeps you guessing and the characters still live large in my mind a week later. Fun and funny. More please!
There are shootings, explosions, gangsters, lawmen and Lawson in a post apocalyptic u.s. The characters are fresh, real and raw. Despite the harshness of the social environment, there is bonding and hope.
If you enjoyed the Dresden Files, I think you will like this book.
This dynamic trio--Fortinbras, Corday, and Archangel—might just be the foundation of a new fiction franchise. Those readers who enjoy gritty action, ravaged post-apocalypse cities, sadistic villains, and gutsy heroes will certainly enjoy Fortinbras and will eagerly await future installments.
