unsurprisingly, the queen of YA paranormal has done it again. from aliens to angels and gargoyles, i have never not enjoyed a JLA book. and now i can add the conflict between half-blood children of gods and daimons to the list of things that entertain me.

there is such an innocent quality to JLAs writing. it takes me back to a simpler time when a story didnt need much to impress me - just easy writing, relatable characters, and a fun story.

although, i do wish this had more greek mythology present. for a story about pure and half bloods, the gods have no actual role in the plot at all. i think zeus is only mentioned like twice. so thats kind of a bummer. maybe they will become more involved as the series progresses?

regardless, this is everything i love about JLAs series, so i have no doubt the other books will be just as enjoyable.

I see most reviews have said this series is pretty much a copy of the Vampire academy!? one and I can’t comment since I haven’t read that.

So, that aside, I would say that didn’t blow me away. You know when you are bored and you have a vague idea of what you wanna watch or read and so you set out to find that thing to pull you out of that state? Well I did that, but it turned out that this didn’t pull me out of boredom, it kinda relaxed me into it. Meaning, it wasn’t bad enough for me to dnf, but it wasn’t good enough to excite me either. I think I’m gonna try book 2 as well (mostly cause I already bought it and also cause i feel like the action is just getting started)

Overall, this was a very average read but there wasn’t anything glaringly bad or wrong with it. It just wasn’t exciting enough.

"Always beware of the one who needs you.
There is always a want behind a need, you see.”

Was this extremely similar to Vampire Academy?
Yes.........
Did I still guiltily love it?
..................
Also, yes.🙈🥰

Hear me out, though.
Despite this series being considered a total rip-off of Vampire Academy, that's only just the first two books. After that, JLA really does get into her own world of things and it's just so amazing.🥺

Alexandria (a.k.a. Alex) Andros (17 y/o) is just like Rose—the stubborn and reckless girl we all know and love (at least I think we do xD). Here, they live in a world of where the Greek Gods are real and you're either a pure-blood or half-blood (basically like Moroi or Dhampir).

Alex is of course, a half-blood and with that, they have their own school, the Covenant, for half-bloods like her to train to become Sentinels or Guards and protect the pure-bloods from monsters gone evil—the Strigoi Daimons. It's either that or.....become a slave to the pure-bloods.😬 (That's not good)

After being on the run for 3 years with her mother away from the Covenant, a terrible accident forces Alex to go back, but the thing is.....she's years behind her classmates, sooo can you guess what happens next?🧐

Yup, she gets Dimitri Belikov Aiden St. Delphi (20 y/o) to be her instructor for the summer before school begins again. His job is to get Alex caught up and ready to train with the rest of her year and if that doesn't happen—well, she's gonna be forced as a slave to pure-bloods and that's really bad .

Okay, I'm not really making this sound good with all the similarities to VA, but honestly, if you love Vampire Academy and you don't mind re-reading something super similar, I'd say go for Half-Blood. I think I'd honestly say I loved this more than VA.😳💞

I love Alex. And Aiden........Aiden is the sweet and caring pure-blooded instructor who also has has dimples that Alex just loves (reminds me of someone other two from JLA's books xD *cough* Poppy *cough* Casteel)

It does seem to be that JLA loves her characters having dimples and I totally don't mind that hehe.😏 I can't help but always fall in love with all of her characters, and Aiden is definitely no exception.😍 Totally swoon-worthy.🥰

I'm so sad there's barely any fanart for this series.😩😭 I really wish I could draw some haha if I had talent, that is.

I'm scared to read the next book because I know what's coming and I'm not ready for some more heartbreak......and that's just the beginning.💔

Downgrading to 4/5 stars instead of 5/5. It's still a lot of fun and I am reminded about why I love this author so much. If I recall this series got a lot better as it went along, and that's fairly impressive because book 1 is pretty good.

So, to all of those who whine about how this is a rip off of Vampire Academy, you're forgetting one thing.... Jennifer Armentrout wrote this, so it made it a million times better than Vampire Academy!

Anyways, while there were similarities, this book is truly it's own and like all of the other books I've read by this author, I couldn't put it down until I was done. I'm glad I have Amazon Prime, because the other books in the series are going to be here soon for a Half-Blood bingefest.

Going into this book I figured that it would be a little like her writing style from her From Blood and Ash series! I like her writing in those books I’ll like her writing in these books. Right?

Wrong.

I didn’t expect this to be so YA and that’s completely my bad for assuming! I just thought there would be more world building or more thoughts from our FMC. There’s literally so much dialogue and almost nothing else!

Alex remained strong as she experienced loss, grief, torture and in the middle of it all, made room for love, albeit forbidden.
It is quite scary when you can’t tell the difference between friends and foe. And worse when the face of the new foe was once a loved one. It was a difficult journey for the young heroine, not having a full grasp of her present situation, at the same time uncertain about what the future holds.
It was a fantastic read, I was fully immersed in the story from start to finish.

Greek Mythology and Jennifer L. Armentrout! Dream come true! I loved this book from beginning to end. Alex went through a tragedy with her mother becoming a daimon and was almost sent to live with her step-father Lucian instead of staying at the Covenant but luckily sexy Aiden St. Delphi stepped in and offered to train her. I adored Aiden and his protectiveness over Alex. I also liked Seth with his snarkiness and can't wait to read more as the books go on.

First Thoughts (2021 Edition):
Okay, but listen, I think I really was in the right mood to restart this series because I enjoyed it so dang much this time around. There's certainly a marked difference in the way this narrative is edited and woven together from JLA's most current series, and I actually think it might be safe to say I prefer this over the newer books in some ways. I'm excited to see where Alex's story goes!

First Thoughts (2020 Edition):
3.5 stars! I can definitely see where this is similar to a couple of other titles I’ve read, but I really ended up enjoying the lore and characters. Looking forward to the rest of the series!

When I first bought this book on a whim I only knew it was about the children of demigods of the Greek verity. But after reading Daimon and wanting more from this world this was pretty damn good. True my salty ass was angry for a whole lot. The damn world structure for Alex and her friends is some bullshit and really pissed me off. The behavior of Marcus and Lucian was also some bullshit. But over all my being bitter about the class system didn’t take away my enjoyment for the world or the epic tale they are weaving.

I think this book would be awesome for fans of Vampire Academy.

An extremely slow start but once the plot was found, I enjoyed Half-Blood a lot more. This book definitely sits firmly in the young adult genre, so felt more like a palate cleanser and was a touch cringey at times but that was easy to ignore.

I enjoyed the characters and the overall storyline, but it just took way too long to get going. I think it was around 48% before anything exciting happened.

Fans of JLA would enjoy this but it would not be a book I recommend to new readers of her.

flat 3 🌟 but in a very enjoyable way

the writing style was lowkey very bland, but i definitely enjoyed my time with this book. idk if i will continue the series or not; this one felt like an easy middle-grade-fantasy-that-decided-they-wanted-to-make-it-ya-so-they-added-some-very-awkward-swearing-and-equally-awkward-romance-with-a-side-of-gross-vampire-demon-blood-sucking-things but otherwise it was great !

Here’s the thing: I was told that Jennifer L. Armentrout’s Covenant series was “Vampire Academy with Greek mythology” or “Vampire Academy meets Percy Jackson,” which interested me enough to make this the next series of Armentrout’s that I read. I was not expecting how similar this was to Vampire Academy though, all the way down to its premise and plot.

Let’s compare, shall we?

• We have our pure-bloods/Moroi, half-bloods/Dhampir, and daimons/Strigoi.
• Daimons/Strigoi are made by biting and consuming the blood of pure-bloods/Moroi.
• The half-bloods/Dhampir are looked down upon by the pure-bloods/Moroi, and are made to spend their lives serving and protecting them.
• Our story opens up with the female main character having run away from her school with another female character.
• Said female main character is saved by her love interest and brought back to the school.
• Female main character is accepted back at the school if she behaves, because female main character is a known rebel/party girl.
• Female main character’s (who is an underage teenager) love interest is her adult mentor.
• Female main character is *super special* because she’s an Apollyon/Shadowkissed.

…shall I go on?

Even with all of the similarities, I was hoping that maybe the mythological aspect might save it, but nope. The topic of the gods/Hematoi and their mythology are barely approached in this book, at least not enough to influence the overall plot. One of the characters even says that the pure-bloods can’t get in contact with the Gods anymore.

Am I still going to continue with this series? Probably. Partially because I want to see if the next books copy the rest of the Vampire Academy series, and partially because this was entertaining just enough— but I don’t mind calling out Jennifer L. Armentrout on this copycat book.

And my enemies-to-lovers dark romantasy loving heart really, really wants Alex and Seth to end up together but I think we all know she’s gonna end up with Aiden bye.

This book is so addictive & so easy to read. I was automatically transported into their world and ate it up rapidly (if that makes sense 😂).

Aiden ❤❤ major heart throb. He is everything us girls could wish for in a man. Unluckily for Alex, he is forbidden fruit! I really enjoyed Alex's character, I love a badass female!! She had me cracking up with her sense of humour and take no s*it attitude. I really enjoyed the storyline, if you are a love of swoonworthy forbidden romance with a touch of Greek mythology you'll love this book. Let's not forget Seth, I don't want to jump the boat but I think I'm going to like him..... I hope!! He might not be as swoonworthy as our heart throb Aiden but there is more to him than meets the eye... could there possibly be a future love triangle? I've been reading so many reverse harem's at the moment that I just think ah she will end up with both! Why not? Its a win win 😂... need to remember not all relationships can come with a harem!! Unfortunately 😏😉

this was a quick & easy YA fantasy with a sprinkle of romance. the world was easy to follow and i enjoyed it for the most part. it felt very much like every other YA fantasy i’ve read though honestly.
the “twist” i saw coming from a mile away hehe.
but the nice thing about this one is once i was invested i couldn’t stop listening until i finished!
i don’t really have much to say other than that. i wasn’t a huge fan of the daemon aspect especially because they just acted like vampires & i don’t know why they couldn’t just call them vampires lol.
also for a YA there was a lot of talk about sex even though there wasn’t any explicit scenes.
🔥SPICE🔥 one heated make out/foreplay scene
🤐LANGUAGE🤐 fairly frequent use of minor swear words. no F words.

This is my first JLA read and it was good! I’m a sucker for demon & gods so naturally I enjoyed this book. I will say there were times the story felt bland, even the connection between Aiden and Alex was a little weird but if you can get past that, it’s a great start to the series.

The plot is decent in my opinion, and I’m interested to see how the story unfolds now that some truths have been revealed. The ending was a little flat and came to an abrupt end, which I wasn’t expecting; there was no cliffhanger or anything so I guess JLA chose peace here lmao

Alex’s character is hilarious and is definitely giving Rose from Vampire Academy. Honestly this entire book feels like a blend of VA and The Winx Saga.

Aiden is your typical dark and handsome with a side of yearning. I feel like I already know how their story will go but Seth is the real mystery. I really like his character a lot and found that he matched Alex’s aura a lot more than Aiden. I can’t wait to see what this series has in store.

I’ll definitely move on to book 2 and hope things pick up a bit.

This first book of the covenant series follows Alexandria as she deals with some pretty intense events that really jumpstart the plot of this book. The beginning of this book was very strong and honestly it's what encouraged me to keep reading.

This book is very simple but in a way that's not too boring or predictable. There are a couple of reveals and plot twists in there to keep it entertaining. Don't read this first book expecting too much romance because you will be disappointed if that is what you are looking for. There is some tension between characters but that's pretty much it. It is definitely setting the stage for some kind of love triangle. I already know who's team I'm on: *cough cough * He's just a lot more interesting and fun to read about in my opinion🤷🏻‍♀️.

I will say that I am not a fan of how slow part of the middle of this book was. It was one of those situations where there is nothing much going on and the characters are just going through their daily routines and building tension and pieces of the plot are being set up in the background.

To conclude I would recommend this to those who are looking for a lighter fantasy. I also would recommend to those who enjoy the vibe of the mortal instruments. I really enjoyed this read but it would not be considered god tier if you know what I mean.

It seemed EXACTLY like VA. Like 2/3 of the book could have just changed the names to Rose and Dimitri and it be the same thing. I enjoyed vampire academy more but this was still an okay start to the series.
