I've seen some negative reviews of Cassie's book due to her "personality change" and I can kind of see it. I've even seen some mention that, because of how subtle the change happens, it can be disorienting. Being a suspicious reader, I knew something strange was going on immediately, but I can see how it might throw some readers.
The change definitely raises the stakes of the book. One mystery is solved, but it's replaced by something more nefarious (and unlike the flowers, this effect is something the girls can't get away from).
Unfortunately, it also means Cassie spends a good portion of her own book being not right in the head, which means we don't really know how she would have handled her mission.
Still, a good continuation of the story and while her mission on Earth was not super exciting, the cliffhanger she comes back to is.
Cassie is one of the quietest Star Darlings, but is just as glad to have Scarlet back on the team - and maybe things are going her way, because she feels a sudden boost of confidence that may just keep her mission on Wishworld from falling apart! Zappa continues the mystery in this humorous entry to an increasingly charming series. Just where has this sudden bravery in Cassie come from?
This book was a little disjointed for me because I took a break from reading it to get married, but it was still a lovely read. Cassie is a fabulous character to spend time with, especially since she keeps a few more things to herself and thus appears to be a different person through other characters' perspectives. We also wrap up one mystery only to bring up some more, and Cassie's intuition proves to be most helpful.
For: fans of the series; fans of boarding school/spy narratives; readers wanting a complication plot over numerous books; readers wanting books where girls are allowed to be however they are while still being strong.
Possible red flags: bullying; personality alteration/mild control; conspiracies.
Wow, I really enjoyed this book! So good and love Cassie, great story and great message about being yourself, Cassie went on her first Wish World mission and helped a young girl and granted her wish : ) Loved it! >3 definitely recommend the book series as well as the Disney Star Darlings animated series! You can find it online via YouTube and on Disney channel on TV : )
