Jim McGill #10

The Last Chopper Out

Rate this book
As President Patricia Grant nears the end of her second term, three big questions hang heavy in the air: Who will succeed her as the next president: her vice president, Jean Morrissey, or Senate Majority Leader Oren Worth? After a Navy warship shoots down two Chinese fighter jets, how far will hostilities with China go? And, of the utmost personal importance to Patti Grant, will her husband and henchman, Jim McGill, live to see the end of her presidency?

McGill is targeted by a cluster of killers known as los muertos, working under the direction of an enigmatic contract assassin called Taps. So McGill summons his colleagues — the private detectives who will staff his newly expanded firm, McGill Investigations International — to help keep him alive and kicking.

They’re soon put to the test when an ambush and ensuing fire-fight shatter the peace of the posh Washington neighborhood of Georgetown. Undeterred, McGill and his colleagues continue the hunt, leading to a climax that leaves McGill fighting tooth-and-nail for his life.

Another good book in this series.

Like this author, he always has a list of characters the beginning. Makes it easier to read and understand their relationships. McGill now first husband in the WH, he cares about the people around him, and a loving husband. Trying to do everything to stay alive. If you read this series from the beginning, you'll definitely will like this more.

Continuing my political thriller binge by Joseph Flynn, I sought answers within the great series and tried to settling my curiosities from cliffhangers of the previous novels. Jim McGill remains in the middle of a great deal of events, including the waning days of his wife’s presidency. While preparing for a post-Oval Office life, he must be on edge, as someone has put out a hit on him. As he expands his McGill Industries PI firm to have more of an international presence, he must be ready for whatever awaits him around the corner. With a novel that tackles this and many of the other advancing plot lines, Flynn proves that he has what it takes to make the most of the reading experience.

With the presidency of Patricia Grant creeping towards its conclusion, many wonder who will replace her in the Oval Office. Two major contenders are preparing for the election, which pits Vice-President Jean Morrissey against the Senate Majority Leader, Oren Worth. As the candidates make moves to gain more favour with the electorate, there are issues the country must handle in short order. A US warship is forced to shoot down two Chinese fighter jets, creating rising tensions with China. No one is quite sure what is set o happen or how the Americans will be able to protect themselves while still currying favour of the world.

One issue that remains wedged in President Grant’s mind is how her husband, Jim McGill, will be able to live through the the end of her presidency. News that a hit has been orchestrated to have him assassinated have made their way from intelligence agencies to the White House. McGill is ready, having expanded his private investigation company to be a world-wide entity, with some of the strongest people at the helm. This will require many people working every angle possible, in hopes of setting the scene for what is sure to be an explosive action, should something come to fruition.

After an attempted assassination goes sideways, McGill and those closest to him receive a clue regarding the central assassin. With a photo in hand, they rush to identify the individual, known as Tops, as well as where they will strike next. With mere months left before the next presidential election, the Chinese beat their chests and try to pull one over on the US Navy, though President Grant is ready for them. Whatever happens, the Grant Administration will not sit idly by, waiting to react. A stunning addition to the Flynn series that had me hooked from the opening pages.

Flynn has done a fabulous job at building the story up by juggling so many plot points in a single novel (and extends them from one book to the next). His narrative is not only strong, but also multi-pathed in order to push things along effectively. The foundation is strong and gains momentum as Flynn adds more to the mix, while resolving some aspects that have spanned a handful of books. Characters emerge, make their presence known, and disappear, though some are always present in order to make an impact. The core individuals provide a connection to the reader, which helps keep things on point and leaves a hunger for added development. Flynn is apt to do this, given the time and the reader’s patience.

Flynn continues his technique of labelling chapters as true ‘parts’ of the book, while vignettes within them serve as multiple shorter chapters. This takes some getting used to, but proves to be an effective way to convey the larger narrative. Flynn scatters his narratives within each chapters and advances things with great form, though there is a great deal to remember, which forces the reader to pay close attention. While this might seem overwhelming to some, it is truly exciting and makes for a stunning story arc that expands over many novels, sometimes never leading to resolution.

These numerous plot points provide much entertainment for all involved, with themes and storylines that push political and social events forward. I am eager to the remaining novels in the series, all of which are likely to push forward new ideas and summarise others that have lingered for a great deal of time. How I could not have discovered this collection years ago, I will never be able to explain.

Kudos, Mr. Flynn, for another great novel.

Flynn's writing is always impressive. The twists and turns of the political machinations are fascinating; I wonder if sometimes Flynn has a flow chart that covers all the walls of his office. McGill is back with cameos of many of the characters of earlier books and other series regulars. It intrigues me how well Flynn makes you care about the characters. Since this is the last of the McGill series (darn!) it would have been easy to have er, 'terminated' some of the minor players and I found myself thinking, no, not him! (or her!) It's a fine writer who can make you care about even some of the bad guys. This is a tightly written novel and highly recommended. I was given a free copy of this book in return for an honest and objective review, and this has been it.

I only wish Patti Grant WAS President!

I love this interesting and entertaining series. You know it is not true but my emotions and responses are as if real. With all the fantastical things happening in real time in politics it is great to retreat to this fantastic series where the President is honest and GOOD and her Henchman always is able to save the day and the nation. I would recommend reading series in order for best results . I hope there are more in series now that the President ( Grant) is out of office.

Sadly. I'm out.

There is a character described in a way that makes me think that the author saw that character as nonbinary. But somehow, that character rejects they/them pronouns on grammatical grounds saying that new words should be invented for gender-neutral pronouns… but then uses exclusively he/she pronouns to describe the different "sides" of the character's gender. I don't know whether this character is as a result of the author's malice or laziness in research, but it feels like the author needed to learn more before he chose to use this aspect of a character.

On top of all that, the character is described as "deeply troubled" and, oh yes, I believe the character is an assassin.

There is much of the book left: perhaps in the fullness of the book, the author redeems himself, but after nine full books of this series, I don't expect it. This series was often good, but often fell short of what I as a reader felt it could have been. And with the family backburnered so far in this book, and the president's term ticking close to its close… It feels like there isn't much scope for what I have enjoyed in this series in what remains of it. I could be wrong, but I've allowed my affection for some of the main characters to pull me along several books more than I would have otherwise.

My to-read list is too long to spend any more time on this series. I'll miss President Grant and Mr. McGill and I'll miss their families. But I will be quite glad to leave behind most of the author's plots and my sense of where his political leanings may lie (which may or may not be correct… perhaps he just effectively channels the most frustrating things about the way politicians speak and think). Life is too short…

at least we finally get out of the Patti Grant administration by the end of this book... Flynn tells a good story... and he has gotten better as the series has gone on... there are still plenty of implausible things happening... the Republican candidate for President is so ridiculous its amazing he even got the nomination.. and McGill is a bit too bullet proof.. With the book jacket description I was expecting more of a firefight in this one but it got cheapened out a bit... but still there is enough drama and good character work to keep me reading.

Always leave them wanting more!

Despite this being the last book in the series, the reader is left wanting more. Not because this is not a great book, but precisely for that reason. The story line is wonderful and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Joseph Flynn has tied it all together and yet one does not want the stories to end. Even with all the questions he answers, he leaves you guessing as to what's next.

Not as good.....

Unfortunately the last book, I'm assuming, of the series was a bit of a disappointment. I've enjoyed all the Henchman's books yet I struggled through this book. Too much going on, too many characters and no time to remind me of who the were. Who wants to go back and forth to the front of the book for a list of character descriptions? The ending was a bit emotional and the only reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 2.

Someone wants Jim McGill dead. He has to find out who and all of those involved so he can move on with his new investigation business which he is taking international. The president Patricia Grant is at the end of her time in office. Many changes will come for them. I have really liked this series. So many interesting characters and interesting interaction in each of the stories. This is a definite must read.

A Delightful End To Madam Patti's Presidency!

It was my first guess that by the cover of this book, that this was the dawning of a new President and that Patti and family were leaving the Office of the President of the United States! I cooked the author of seamlessly ending this last book in the run of many books. It was good to see several bad folks leave the scene too, however I must assume there are many newer twists in their lives. Bravo!

The Last Chopper Out (a Jim McGill novel #10)

Flynn takes you inside the White House and especially President Grant's (first female president) mind and daily life. In addition, the President's henchman and new husband, Jim McGill's Investigation company is explored as well. This is one of the best works of Joseph Flynn I've had the pleasure to read. You Won't want to miss it.

The end of the mc gill era

I will miss president patti grant and her henchman husband. They were as real a couple as one could expect the president and first husband to be -- with lots of twists and surprises. I wish patti grant could be president for two more terms just so joe Flynn could write about her.

A very good series

The President’s Henchman series is complete. It ended with one of the best books in the series. Things got tied up and completed nicely. By now the cast of characters is family, not just with the other characters but also with the reader. Thankfully the saga continues. This political thriller series is highly recommended.

Another excellent read!

I'm so disappointed! This was the last of the Jim McGill books. The saga is over, but it went out in the same style in came in,...with style, suspense, and several threads running through the story. I am a luckier person for having discovered the series and Mr Flynn. Thank you.

Great read!

These books are terribly delightful. Weknow the good guys are going to win and everything is going to work out fine except for the bad girl or guy. That knowledge doesn’t spoil a single one of these novels. I love thePollyanna affect woven into our livesfor real. Enjoy.

Good book but too long with the story.

I enjoy reading this series but this book had many stories within the story, alli interesting on their own but it just made for one long book. I found myself skipping along over pages. I do like the author's writing and will finish out the series.

The Last Chopper Out

In the latest book in the Jim McGill series, the author gives you a behind the scenes look at the last year of a Presidency. The author also captures how brutal and terrifying that Presidential Campaigns have become. Where nothing is sacred and people do any and everything that they can to win.

This was the book you didn't want to end. A fantastic series with the US having a female president and her husband a PI. I hope the author keeps coming up with new stories using these characters in the near future. One of the best series I have read in a long time.

Sweet

This book fits in with the series. It flows well from the start to the end. Very hard to put it down. Makes you want to keep reading or picking it back up quickly if you put it down. This is the way the whole series is. Thank you for the enjoyment of this book
