Check My Heart

Rate this book
The death of his little brother turned Kurt Lundquist’s world upside down. He channeled his grief into skating his heart out--and ultimately leading his hockey team to win the championship. Now, all he wants to do is throw a party with the Cup in his brother's honor. He’s got no clue where to start...until he runs into the gorgeous hospice nurse who took such great care of Jasper. She’s waaay off limits, but he’s desperate, and hires her to help him.

Lisette Broussard’s heart broke a little more every time a patient died. Losing the brave brother of a hockey star was the last straw. Learning a new specialty was supposed to change her life for the better, but it used up her savings. Then the slam dunk job with the New Orleans championship hockey team mysteriously disappears. So she jumps at Kurt’s offer of a job, no matter how temporary. No matter how...dangerous, given how much she’s always crushed on him. No matter how risky it is to fall for Kurt, since he’ll always associate her with the grief of losing his brother.

But the more time they spend together, the deeper they both fall. Kurt’s heart begins to thaw...and then heat. Lisette can’t resist him, and throws caution to the wind. She’ll take whatever time he gives her. Can they move beyond the pain of the past and focus on a future together?

Tragic and difficult circumstance bring Lisette, hospice nurse, and Kurt, hockey star, together. Lisette was the care giver to Kurt’s young brother as he lost his battle with cancer.

Reunited when Lisette applies for a new position with the New Orleans hockey team. But when the position falls through, Lisette takes on a temporary position offered by Kurt to help him run a fundraiser.

The more time they spend together, the deeper their bond grows. Kurt was going through the motions of life until Lisette came back into it and now he can’t imagine it without her. Will they overcome the pain?

Barth infuses Check My Heart with emotionally gripping and heartfelt topics and still manages to balance it with a sweet and genuine romance.

You can judge this book by it's cover both amazing.

I received this copy of Check My Heart from Christi Barth. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Check My Heart by Christi Barth was a quick and fun read about two people who met under the worst of circumstances but find something unexpected happening between them.

Kurt Lundquist’s life was forever changed when this little brother died. Torn by grief and loss, as a hockey player, Kurt channels those feeling into his game to help his team win the championship. Now he wants to honor his brother, but has no idea where to start.

Lissette Broussard was the nurse that helped Kurt’s brother during his last days. But with every death, Lisette felt her heart shatter more and more. Needing a change, she looked for something new to do. Now she finds herself back in Kurt’s life.

Kurt and Lisette knew each other through very heartbreaking circumstances. Though both felt an attraction to each other, they kept their distance. But when Lissette finds herself in Kurt’s world, she ends up working for him. But Kurt has a secret that could destroy them. Can Kurt and Lissette find a way to each other or is it too late for them?

This was a fun quick read that was sweet, funny and emotional. Perfect for a summer day. I liked the characters, the story and Kurt’s teammates!

Happy reading

I really loved Christi Barth's Naked Men Series and was very intrigued to read Check My Heart after reading the synopsis. Christi has a way of digging deeply into the emotional aspects of the characters and how one particular life event has shaped them.

Kurt and Lisette are brought together under tragic circumstances; the losing battle against cancer of Kurt's younger brother, Jasper. Lisette being Jasper's hospice nurse during the last months of his life.

Jasper's death affected Kurt and Lisette deeply making them re-evaluate the direction they are heading with their lives and making a few major changes along the way. Lisette has faced the reality that dealing with hospice care is too emotionally damaging for her. Making the decision to change her speciality, Lisette has to re-certify without a steady pay check to offset the cost. Her new vocation bringing her back into contact with Kurt and a job with the hockey team he plays for as part of the physical therapy team.

Kurt and Lisette have always had an underlying attraction between them but due to the circumstances neither were in a position to make a move. Lisette's appearance at the hockey club brings Kurt's feelings back to the surface as well as his grief over his brothers death and lack of direction with his own life after fulfilling his brothers last wishes. Unfortunately, Kurt manoeuvres Lisette into a position of working for him rather than the job she desperately needs.

Although there is an intense chemistry between the pair it is often overshadowed by the cloud their grief casts over it, creating a strong barrier for the possibility of a real relationship. They don't trust the emotions they bring out in each other because of the connection to Jasper.

Check My Heart is a novella length story that is jam packed. I really liked the way in which the loss Kurt and Lisette experienced made them re-evaluate their priorities and focused the need to embrace the positives in their lives. At times I felt as if Jasper was playing a helping hand in connecting Kurt and Lisette, adding to the heart-warming feel of the story as a whole.

Start with an absolutely heartwrenching beginning (have tissues handy!) and an intriguing premise (older brother of cancer patient falls for hospice nurse)--throw in a hockey hero (aforementioned older brother) and you should have a hat trick, right? That was my hope when I started reading Check My Heart, a hope which was only partially fulfilled.

I liked both Kurt and Lisette, the hero and heroine (AKA brother and nurse). Buying into their relationship push-pull was a bit trickier, though--maybe if we'd seen them in the beginning, instead of finding out about it later on? (Especially since their individual accounts of that time don't quite seem to jive--both claim to be drawn to the other, but neither seems to think that the other is even remotely interested (I get it; the younger brother is dying, etc., but still...)) They also seem to go pretty quickly from Jasper will always come between us to getting over that obstacle (I don't actually think there was a moment of them getting over it--though maybe I just missed it, somehow? Or promptly forgot all about it?) My biggest issue, though, was with Even when it was admitted to and moved on from, it still rubbed me wrong.

Altogether this wasn't a bad way to spend a few hours, though. I mean, there is a hot hockey hero who has the bonus of being a great older brother and a very sympathetic nurse who knows how to plan kick-butt parties, plus the resolution is sweet and fairly believable. It's not my favorite from Ms Barth, but I'm not sorry I read it, either.

Hockey. Goodness how much I love reading about my sport guys and Kurt is no exception. The way this story starts is sad, but it shows how strong Kurt is throughout this whole story. He stills the book because of this. The tragedy that he has to endure and the accomplishments that he makes all tie into who he is and who he wants to be. That is why you will love Kurt in this book. How Lisette fits in the picture at the beginning is difficult because you know its the end for someone and that it sad to know, but what she does for Kurt months later also shows you what kind of person she is. She is strong and has one of the purest hearts, because in her line of work she would have to. But meeting up with Kurt months later is unexpected but in a good way. They had a thing for each other but never told each other and kept each other at arms length, now they might be able to reconnect.

At the beginning of this book it is a little heartbreaking. Then it jumps ten months down the road and things become more clear. I felt that the story bounced a bit too fast for me because I didn't get to see what happened in those first ten months then when Kurt and LIsette see each other again you can feel the chemistry. It was really hard to connect to the characters because it was so very fast paced. I liked the characters and it was a good story, but a little too fast for me. I like to know them a little better, but the story was good.I enjoyed reading the book and it will not take you long to get through the book.

I became a fan of Ms Barth when I read her series Naked Men. I enjoyed reading that series, and was hoping to enjoy this book as well.
This one I didn’t just enjoy, I LOVED!!!
The story centers around hockey player Kurt Lundquist, who took his team to win the Stanley Cup, and who won it for his brother. A young boy that lost his battle to cancer and whom Kurt is still mourning. The other main character is Lisette, the brother’s hospice nurse, who has been so drained by all the losses she has had , that decided a new career move was necessary. for her wellbeing.
These two meet again and through some manipulation from Kurt’, they start developing relationship.
All that said, it’s also a story about grieve , guilt , loss of a love one, and betrayal. About the loss that not only affects the families, but also the dedicated people who work in hospice.
A very touching story and one I hope will continue in a series. I can almost see the F- Bombs getting their own story.
Thank you Ms Barth, for another wonderful, and heartfelt story.
I was gifted this copy. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

„Check My Heart” by Christi Barth is a very intense story in which the main characters are brought together by the very thing that keeps them apart. It is a very quick read and for me it was perfect for a summer evening.

Kurt Lundquist is still mourning the loss of his brother, doing his best to accomplish his desires, even after his passing. He never imagined meeting Lisette Broussard again. She as well is followed by little Jasper’s death. This determines her to switch her career from hospice nurse. So both our main characters are looking for a new beginning, Kurt thinking of giving up hockey as well.

I loved the attraction between them, though I was not quite comfortable with the way things got back to normal after a hot moment. Their relationship starts with a lot of sexual tension. They still hold respect for Jasper’s death and to them, this is an obstacle that is hard to overcome, in their opinion. But this reason is exactly what brings them together, since Kurt hires Lisette to help him plan a party for Jasper’s team mates from his school’s hockey team, as was his wish.

The writing is very easy and the emotions are well expressed. The sadness, the intensity of their attraction, but as well the willingness to start over are well presented. The plot is not rushed at all and everything evolves at a normal pace.

Suffice to say that I quite enjoyed this book and the main characters. This is a clean romance, very suitable for a summer evening, while dreaming of your own “special someone” J I love Christi Barth’s writing and I do hope I’ll read more books by her. Till the next one, 4 stars go to “Check My Heart”

Lisette was a hospice nurse for Kurt's brother Jasper. When he passed away, Lisette decided to change her career path. Kurt hinders her job search but wants her to help him plan a party in honor of the Cup and his brother. When these two spend time together they like each other more and more. What will happen when the truth comes out about Kurt putting the brakes on a great job opportunity? This is a good book about people making mistakes and what happens when an apology is truly meant from the bottom of one's heart.

Kurt is a hockey player on the Cajun hockey team.
They’ve won the Cup and now he’s hosting a party. More importantly, he’s grieving the loss of his fourteen year old brother.
Jasper had a Cup bucket list.

Lisette was Jasper’s hospice nurse and now ten months later, they are connecting, physical and emotionally.
Bound by loss.

Spoiler

But he pulls a D1ck move asks his coach not to hire her. So she’s left without a job and had to leave a job that was slowly destroying her. He keeps this secret and he’s solely the reason for their strife.

Check My Heart is a cute, quick read and I love it! The storyline was engaging and kept my interest as well as the drama, twists, mistakes and emotional turmoil created tension for the couple. Kurt and Lisette are both strong characters and that made for a well balanced couple. The attraction between the couple simmered along nice as they engaged in a chemistry that was steamy and hot. Can not wait to read more from this author.

I just love a good Hockey romance so I could not wait to try this book and it did not disappoint. This is Kurt and Lisette's book these two were fantastic characters that you cannot help but love. These two met when she was helping look after Kurt's sick brother Jasper and when he passed it broke both their hearts. Jasper wrote a bucket list for Kurt to complete after his team wins the Calder Cup and he wants Lisette's help in completing it. I just loved getting to know these two they were super characters and had great chemistry I would recommend it.

Check My Heart by Christi Barth has it all. A smoking cover and check out the hockey puck! I would love one of those!

Kurt has just won the Stanley Cup and is preparing to throw the most amazing party, if only he could have the one thing that he desires most.

Lisette has a job that gives of herself, taking care of those who can't take care of themselves. That job forever changes her and is the reason she pushed Kurt away.

The hockey season is officially over, but Kurt might land in the penalty  box and throw everything away. Will he fix it in time? It will take a leap of faith, trust and forgiveness to discover their hearts can be mended.

This was the first story I read from Christi Barth and I look forward to reading her backlist!

Check My Heart by Christi Barth a five-star read that will set your heart a flutter. My goodness Kurt Lundquist will melt even the coldest of hearts, his love for his little brother just took my breath away, I had forgotten that I had this sitting on my kindle and when I realised I started it even though I had a ton of other reading to be done, and I am so glad I did as it really won me round. I enjoy a good sports romance but loved this one. Lisette reminded me of a friend of mine, who is also a hospice nurse, and she has also had her crisis of wondering if she could go on, she chose a different path to Lisette but when I told her what I was reading she was over the moon as its not a job role that comes up often in romance stories, and she was so happy it was, she was so happy that it may make people stop and think about this as a path and loved how the rewarding side was shown even if it is only rewarding for a certain time. Kurt and Lisette will warm your heart and keep it fresh like the ice beneath their boots. If you haven’t picked up this author before then do yourself a favour and do it, you won’t be disappointed and if you have still picked this story up as its worth reading every word.

Sweet and Heartwarming! This is a great fast paced sweet, and sexy romance. After trying to move on, after the death of his younger brother, Kurt Lundquist has been merely, surviving, until he runs into his brother's hospice nurse. Just a touch is all it takes, for Kurt to experience all the forbidden alarms going off in his head. Lisette Broussard had always been between his brother and him, taking care of Jasper and looking after his comfort and his well being, but now he saw her in a new light. She was so full of happiness and light, nothing like he remembered from months ago when she gave her all, to make his brother's final days comfortable.
After almost a year of crushing on the Cajun Rage Ice Hockey Star, Lisette is blown away to run into Kurt. But when he shows up at her place and plants the most intimate kiss of her life on her, she is worried that the grief they shared over the loss of his brother, will always leave a dark cloud over their attraction to one another. Especially when he asks for her help, in another project that he has to fulfill in his brother's name.
Will spending more time with each other be temporary, or will the heat and attraction they have lead to a HEA? You will have to read to find out.

I picked up this novella at the Coffe, Chocolat & Books Event. I'm glad that I did.

Kurt's younger brother Jasper is sick and has created a bucket list. But not for himself, for Kurt to do when he wins the Calder Cup. After winning the cup, Kurt runs into Jasper's hospice nurse, Lisette. With her help, he's sure he can honor his brother. Only he has to pull some strings to get her to comply. She's just as smoking hot as he remembers, maybe even more. Is it the loss of Jasper that is pulling them closer? Or is it true feelings? Can Kurt honor his brother's bucket list and still win the girl?

Lisette never forgot Kurt. He was a rock for his brother Jasper. When Jasper passed it not only killed Kurt, but hurt Lisette too. Now she's on the job hunt and just happened to run into Kurt. Fingers crossed she'd run into him much, much more, if she got the job. When Kurt shows up at her door and offers her a job to help honor Jasper, she is hesitant, this isn't the kind of job she wants, but she needs the money to survive. Can she tempt Kurt into more than just a job? And what about a job after this job?

This is a quick book with lots of chemistry between Kurt and Lisette. They were both holding back, unsure of what would happen. I'm glad I picked this book up and will be reading more books by Ms. Barth!

Keep the tissues handy for this one. Kurt is kind, caring, charming, determined and cocky. And brokenhearted after losing his little brother to cancer. Lisette is strong, caring, generous and vulnerable. She was the hospice nurse for Kurt's brother Jasper. And they are both witty and snarky. Almost a year after Jasper passes, Kurt runs into Lisette where his team plays. She's there to interview for her first job in her new specialty, having left her hospice career. The first thing that Kurt thinks about when he runs into her, after a quick fantasy of kissing her, is that he needs help to plan a party, something she had done with Jasper, so he told his coach not to hire her, so that he could. Both are intensely attracted the other, but both realize that Jasper will always be between them. As they plan the party they get close, then physical, neither daring to hope for a future. I cried, I laughed, I cried again. It's a sweet, romantic and heartbreaking story that grabs you and doesn't let go.

Give me all the hockey romance

I'm a huge sucker for a hockey romance. I'm also a big fan of Christi Barth's since the Naked Men series. So when I saw this book I knew I HAD to read it.

I loved Kurt and Lisette so much!!!! Kurt is such a sweetie and even when he messes up you forgive him because you see how broken up he is about it and how hard he works towards making everything ok again. I also really loved Lisette because she's kind of funny but also super sweet and caring.

From the beginning Kurt and Lisette feel this pull towards each other and it's so cute to see them touching each other and sneaking kisses before they finally give in to each other.

This books was such a cute, quick read and I loved it!!! I only wish it was longer (entirely for selfish reasons).

This was a great quick read for me. The prologue was sad and my heart was already breaking for Kurt. For Kurt his journey in this book comes full circle and he does a lot of healing with the help of Lisette. Lisette is looking for a career change and this new path has lead her to Kurt. She's had feelings for him ever since she helped with his family. Neither of them think they can have a future with Kurt's brother's memory between them. It's a bumpy road, but for both Kurt and Lisette the destination is worth it. One of my favorite parts is how Kurt spends his day with the the Cup. It made me happy, but it's also a moment that had me a little teary eyed.

I thought this was a cute little hockey story about brotherhood and living after the loss of a love one. This was the first time I have read Christi Barth and I enjoyed it. I guess because it was about my favorite subject hockey. Hockey player Kurt Lundquist little brother passed away and he was not doing good when he ran into his brother’s nurse Lisette. Kurt was so glad to see her and since she was in between jobs, he asked her to help him plan a party with his turn of the Stanley Cup. This was a feel good read to me. I hope to try some more of her books.

It's not Ms. Barth's Naked Men series, but I'll take it!

It is interesting to see the evolution of the relationship between Lisette and Kurt. Both are afraid that the sadness that first drew them together will overshadow the feelings they have for each other and hang over their relationship forever. That doesn't keep either of them from deciding to see if they can overcome the situation...

This was a quick and enjoyable read. I was provided an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
