Easy to understand for us whose brain shuts down at the mention of the word "marketing". I found many great tips and will implement the primary post/outpost concept which will cut down on my time spent unsuccessfully juggling social media.

It's very short and does not go into too much depth which is a good thing for newbies, and is written so anyone can understand the concepts. I found it easier to understand than most marketing books, but again, it doesn't go into great detail, and deals only with organizing your social media.

I only wish I would have read this at the beginning of my career...it would have saved a lot of time. I'm a notch beyond a beginner, but the book was still helpful and has a few links to resources that can be useful.

This was okay. There are some good principles in it, but some links inside don't go anywhere anymore. This was written a few years ago, and it doesn't seem to be updated very well. That's why I marked it down. I like this author/marketer's podcasts, so thought I'd get her book. I don't feel I learned anything new from it that I didn't already know from the podcast, but it was still a decent book. I was just sad that a couple links that should've taken me somewhere for more information I wanted weren't viable anymore.

I got this book from my local awesome public library. I will admit that I started reading this book holding my nose. I didn't think this book would be useful so I started flipping through it. While I found most of the book rather dry, but does have some nuggets of good information.

I suggest getting a used paperback copy as I did (thanks Amazon) and use Post-It Notes and highlighters for the parts that work for you.

The digital copy (which is updated as of 2019) also includes a free writing lesson, but I have yet to sign up for it.

As I read this book I found myself wishing again and again that I'd had this information about marketing when I published my first book. If I had, I think I'd be a lot more successful now. I've read a lot of books and listened to a lot of podcasts about marketing for authors but I still learned a lot from this "Newbie's Guide" and I made a list of things that I'm working on implementing. I highly recommend it.

Practical tips and insights

Very well written and easy to implement many of the strategies. Several bonus resources including a webinar and some free courses. Motivating Action Steps to implement as well.

I like the author's insights about social media outposts and was immediately inspired to create my own Facebook author page. Will definitely read through the book again as I'm sure I missed some things.

Finally, a book that teaches you how to make a marketing plan instead of just telling you that you need one! I found this book super helpful, easy to understand with actionable steps that make a difference. There's a free online course offered inside too and I urge everyone who's serious about getting their marketing act together to complete that course. It was long, but so, so worth it! I purchased one of the authors other books after finishing this one, just because this one was so helpful.

Table of contents is broken/not correct

There's some good info depending on the type of marketing you want to do and what works for you. Definitely more of an overview than super specific in depth info. She does pitch a course at the end.
The table of contents is screwed up and lists untitled multiple times and is in the back of the book. Very annoying to not be able to find sections easily.

Excellent resource for new marketers

The author did something that I didn't think was possible: she actually got me excited about book marketing!
Most books in this genre look at marketing as a one size fits all strategy. This book is unique as it focuses on educating the author about approaching marketing at the beginning level.

I loved this book

This book opened me up to the idea of following up on my kindle business. You can't just expect to write the book and let it sail, it'll still sink. I'm implementing what this book has to say and let's see what happens. Definitely read it if you're thinking about getting into Kindle publishing.

Chris Syme is rapidly becoming one of my go-to sources for up-to-date information on book marketing.
Many of the other experts excel in saying what’s worked for them, and don’t realise why that can’t or won’t work for everyone. Sell More Books With Less Marketing starts with a hard truth many book marketing experts gloss over:

You must write a good book. This means beta readers, editors, and good covers for a start … you must do the work … all the work.

Chris Syme doesn’t have a gazillion book sales of her own. But she does have her daughter, Becca, a NYT Bestselling author who writes in a couple of different genres (and is a guest lecturer at Lawson Writer’s Academy, which means she knows her stuff). Chris and Becca co-host The Smarty Pants Book Marketing Podcast, and Chris has her own Facebook group.

Some of the material in this book is repeated from her earlier book, The Newbies Guide to Selling More Books with Less Social Media. This includes her explanation of the sales funnel, and her stage of a published writer. This was the lightbulb moment for me in regard to her first book, as it illustrates why so much of the marketing information out there doesn’t work.

Because it’s not written for newbie authors.
This book is.

If you haven’t read any books on book marketing, this is an excellent one to start with. It covers the basics in a straightforward way, so a new author won’t get lost in book marketing jargon that’s years ahead of where they need to be.

It’s aimed at authors with fewer than three books published, and little in the way of an online platform.
This means readers can focus on what’s important now, rather than wasting time chasing the next must-do strategy that only works effectively for authors with multiple books published, ideally in a series.

Sell More Books with Less Marketing covers the sales funnel, the three-must have marketing tools all authors need, and each chapter has actionable steps to take. Chris Syme also provides readers with access to her exclusive Facebook group, and access to a free email marketing course.

Syme asks readers to make three commitments:

A commitment to consistency
A commitment to perseverance
A commitment to excellence
Like most professional marketers, Syme subscribes to permission-based marketing rather than the old interruption marketing. This is intelligent marketing, because it’s marketing to people who’ve asked to be marketed to e.g. via an email list.

She like threes: she has her three commitments, her Big Three Goals (discoverability, sales, loyalty), and the Big Three Components you’ll need to succeed (website, email newsletter, Facebook page).

Syme cuts through the plethora of advice on book marketing to deliver three threes that will form the basis for a solid marketing platform, with no slimy selling involved.

Recommended. Thanks to the author for providing a free ebook for review.

“The Newbie’s Guide to Sell More Books With Less Marketing” by Chris Syme is Book 3 of the ‘SMART Marketing for Authors’ series. The title of this non-fiction self-help book is self-explanatory, and a quick peek at the table of contents shows the way the author starts with the basics and builds on each concept to walk one through the thought processes and actions needed to maximize the results of each step. I love the straightforward and simple language that reminds one to work within one’s budget and have realistic expectations. Even better, research studies are liberally cited to back up the sometimes eye-opening premises such as the effectiveness or lack thereof of certain types of social media. There are very nice bonuses, such as the online course that is included, the reference sites that are given, and, above all, the encouragement offered.

There are excellent take-away messages that are clearly laid out, for those at various stages of tech savvy and authorship, and I can’t imagine anyone not finding this to be a valuable resource. I am fascinated to compare the advice given with the interactions I have as a reader and find how nicely it dovetails with my own experiences. Truly, presenting an excellent product then forming a connection with a reader that converts him or her into a loyal follower is great advice, and this book gives a blueprint that will aid one in achieving that goal.

A good source of knowledge for new writers looking to use social media to market their books.
The author provides guidance for setting up an online presence in a way that will help new writers deal with that sense of overwhelm that hits you when you realise being a self-published author is a lot more than writing.

This book covers the basics pretty well and helped me work through some strategies for marketing. It's a decent introduction, but I was somewhat frustrated by the fact that the bonus material (worksheet) allegedly on the website was nowhere to be found, and I wasn't enthusiastic enough to bother going on to the course at the end of the book.

Just finished this, and it was great! I really needed a step by step guide, as my marketing in classes in school happened in the 80's. Prehistorical. Now I have copious notes, access to two of Chris' video classes, and a PLAN to let the world know that Montana Rising: Wordplay exists, and make lots of friends doing it.
If you're a Newbie author like me, I heartily recommend the book.
