Derek knew that his family needed to be ready for emergencies. He was confident that they were prepared for all kinds of disasters, big or small, short term or long term. The Jakkyls weren't part of his planning. Derek wasn't ready for them, and his family paid the ultimate price. Now the only thing Derek wants to be ready for is revenge. In a time when lethal violence is treated as an easy answer to disputes, lust for revenge is anything but rare. Derek isn't the only one on the island wanting revenge against the Jakkyls. Unlike him, others are not willing to throw away their lives seeking it by themselves. Derek discovers the Harriers, a new gang that formed for the sole purpose of making the Jakkyls pay. The Harriers seem just as brutal, but more focused about who they attack… for now. When Derek throws everything he can into a solitary attack against the Jakkyls but is stopped by the Harriers, he must quickly decide his next move. Seeing nothing left to live for, Derek is tempted to give in to the futility of life after the fall of civilization, but an unexpected stranger shows him a different path...
An easy-to-read post-apocalyptic short story. Following the nuclear storm causing the world to become a very different place, the gang of thugs, aptly called the Jakkyls, have attacked and plundered his home and he has lost his wife and children to their mad violence. Derek, on a quest for revenge against the gang, encounters survivors: some have fought Jakkyls and others just want to avoid conflict. It is easy to imagine the situation after such an apocalyptic event when one considers the way in which criminality and brutality is perpetrated and seemingly condoned in some areas because of the young age of the miscreants. Thuggery, violence and physical attacks seem to have become a rite of passage, and the authorities seem ill inclined or unable to put a stop to these thugs – even when there seems mature crooks behind the scenes. This story shows how vigilantes tend to step in with their own violence when faced with this situation.
Very good story, quite well-written with compelling characters and great action sequences. I wanted more at the end from this short-ish novel or novella. It needs a Book 3 to resolve what has happened so far, without question. But this is very well done. Recommended for anyone who likes post-apocalyptic and prepper fiction, although the prepper angle doesn't hit you over the head as a reader. It's a really good story, not a lecture or a primer on how to prepare for a SHTF moment...
Looking forward to the next (and last?) of the series...
The narrative begun with Jakkyl Raid continues. New characters are introduced, and revelations of an expanding range of forces and influences impacting the small island off the coast of the United States bump up the tension. Aden Cabro keeps the story real, and his interest in survivalist / prepper culture is very convincing.
