Mia Winters was a perfectly normal junior at Yale University. Until she accidentally witnessed a secret lovers' rendezvous. Now, blackmailed into silence, a sexual hunger has awoken inside of her, and there's only one way to satiate it--but she's not sure she wants to. Of course, Julian Roth, her gorgeous and brilliant T.A., and Tristan Masters, her equally gorgeous but loathsome classmate, may not give her a choice. The closer she gets to them, the more she is drawn into the world of old money, family dynasties, and secret societies--all worlds she never intended to discover. Will she let herself go down the proverbial rabbit hole or will her better judgement win out in the war between what her brain thinks and what her body craves?
This work of fiction is erotica, meaning that sexual encounters are descriptively explicit and extensive. This novel features a "MMF" relationship, meaning two men and one woman are all involved in a three-way sexual relationship. Content is inappropriate for non-adults.
A. J. Watson lives in Kennewick, Washington, with her husband, daughter, and more four-legged critters than she cares to admit. She writes for love, drinks too much tea, and is deeply addicted to sleep. She is a Ravenclaw, her patronus is a manx cat, and her wand is Cedar, 12 and 3/4 inches, Unicorn Hair core, unbending flexibility.
No beating around the bush with this one, it gets straight to the good stuff.
After a start like that I thought I was in for an OTT smut fest but I was very wrong. This little book of yummyness had an actual plot, some drama and good characters. Don't get me wrong though it had some seriously Hot, Hot scenes.
Tristan is the too cool for school, bad boy asshole type or that's what he projects to everyone. Julian is the hot nerdy teachers assistant and philosophy major. Tristan and Julian have been in a relationship for years, their relationship is a secret which is the way Tristan wants it. All is going well until the prissy nerdy girl Mia sees their secret relationship in action, just what are the guys going to do with this naughty girl and how does blackmail come into it?
Most of the 'drama' in the book is related to Tristan and his need to keep everything a secret so he can get into this exclusive club at Berkeley. This need he has to join the club stops him from admitting or confronting his feelings for both Julian and Mia.
I found Julian and Mia also held back because of Tristan and I wanted to slap him!! It got a little frustrating at times as you could see what a great relationship they could have it they got their shit together. All in all this was a great read and I am really looking forward to seeing what happens next as this one ends in a cliffhanger that could take the story in any direction. I just hope these three get their HEA.
This book made me uncomfortably horny. And made me question my sexuality. And made me read it again. Then again. I gave up on underwear and sat on a towel. My boyfriend thinks he inspired the multiple accounts of molesting he's gotten in the past week. My Drarry fangirl has been reawoken.
Mia finds herself in a really complicated situation when she sneaks in a closet and accidentally discovers a secret. Julian is her TA and Tristan is one of her classmates in Yale university, but they never seemed to get along well. They may share the same floor in their dorms, but they never thought that they would share more things together.
Meanwhile, everything's on stake for Tristan because he wants to join a secret society and he doesn't need any complications happening in his way. The question is if he will be able to resist those complications and if they will improve his life or destroy everything on their way.
God I want to f*ck them. Either of them. Both of them.
Wow, this book was hot! I suppose it had been a long time since I had read MMF and this probably came at the perfect time. I really liked the writing, the characters were well written and I definitely have a clear image of their personalities, their thoughts and actions. Although, at first I couldn't understand the whole "blackmail" situation, but moving forward on the book, you see that the author had already predicted that.
I think that it's a very intriguing story and of course a very steamy one. I definitely liked the relationship between Julian and Tristan, Mia and Julian, Mia and Tristan and of course all three of them together. I can't wait to see how the story will unravel, especially after that ending that indeed surprised me.
ARC was provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This story was good, and I can't wait to see what happens next.... but it reads very similar to another book I've read. The circumstances are different, but the characters had the same type of "feel" to them. If that makes any sense...
So points off for some consistency issues. Sometimes someone's pants would be taken off, and then the next line someone was putting their hands in the pants that were supposedly on the floor, but now they are back on the person's body. Something a good read through would easily have fixed.
If you like MMF romance then this is definitely a book you should pick up. It's more than just erotica, there is actually a growing love story.. well sort of. Also the side plot with the secret societies is pretty interesting. I can't wait to see how the side characters who had small roles play into the next book. How they will change things.
All in all a good read if you can look past some consistency errors. Check it out!
I am going to be completely honest here. When I was asked to read this book, I had strong reservations that I wasn't really going to enjoy it or quite frankly finish it. I'm very happy to say that I was dead wrong. I more than enjoyed this book. It was damn good, and it's not typical menage a tois. I will admit I have strong thing for Tristan even though he is an ass most of the time. I really really like him. I'm also wanting so much more of him. And secretly hoping him and Mia end up together.
Where do I begin with this book? I enjoyed reading it, that wasn't a problem for me, in fact, I read it from start to finish without a break and the fact that the story doesn't end there makes it even better for me because if it didn't I would be addressing a lot of issues.
This book is for mature readers, lol as if the cover doesn't say so enough. It's about Mia, Julian and Tristan, following the beginning of their very unconventional relationship, *hint hint* the cover of the book. Nosedive into the beginning of a torrid affair between the three.
I don't like Tristan. I can't I won't and even if he redeems himself, I won't still like him. He accuses Mia of being judgemental, when she isn't actually and has every right to be unfriendly towards him, when in fact he is the one being a judgemental asshat. Sorry for my mini rant there. He seems so shallow and doesn't have a mind of his own, can someone say puppet? He is mean, unkind and fake and I felt super uncomfortable at the beginning of this book because of him and what he did. If I were in Mia's shoe I would never ever go near him again and won't ever let him touch me. Gross invasion of privacy and personal space. That kind of behaviours don't float, that's what makes men feel more entitled to treat us as objects.
I like Mia, but I also found her a tidbit annoying when it came to Tristan, or maybe I'm just projecting my dislike of Tristan on her. She is smart, she has that going for her and I love that she keeps her words. She is unapologetically honest and that's good, but there is something off about her character I can't place yet. The same goes for Julian, I mostly feel sorry for him. At least he isn't a puppet and he isn't ashamed to be who he wants to be.
I wish there was more of a backstory to the characters though, we get vague talks of why they are the way they are, but not a full explanation for us to connect with their actions in the story. I hope to see more of that in the next book.
Kudos I didn't really see that end coming, I mean it was expected, but now I feel like things are really going to take a downhill from there onwards and Mia is a pawn. Sigh, curiously waiting to read the next book.
So a wonderful person, gave me this book in exchange for an honest review of it, expressing my thoughts and what not. There it is up there. 100% honesty. I really enjoyed reading it, and I know that with time this author is only going to get better with the books she writes, cause she is a good writer.
When Yale student Mia Winters catches classmate Tristan Masters and TA Julian Roth getting' jiggy wit it while she's hiding in the closet, she's stunned. And so are they when they catch her red handed. To even the blackmail scale, the guys record the three of them having sex, much to her mortification. But as the semester skims by, the men can seem to stay away from Mia, and eventually the three of them are all over each other any chance they get. With Tristan's future with the Yale secret society, Skeleton Key, in the balance, he knows he can't afford to do anything to screw up his chances…like dating a guy or hooking up with a "nobody" girl. They're all walking a fine line of propriety and secrets and sex, but where it all ends is anyone's guess.
I steer clear of YA/NA reads as a rule, but when the author's friend contacted me to review BLACKMAIL, I thought I'd give it a shot since I do love me some MMF action. And Ms. Watson's first novel doesn't disappoint, because BLACKMAIL was one erotic scene after the other, with vivid sexcapades all over Yale's campus. I'll admit being confused as hell during 9 out of 10 conversations the characters had, as many of the discussions consisted of their philosophical opinions…at least I think that's what it was, that's a guess as it's been awhile since I've employed that much brain power to ancient tomes. Honestly, Ms. Watson could be either a reincarnated Aristotle or BS'ing her way through the dialogue…many of us wouldn't ever know! Having never been to Yale, I also stumbled over how the characters kept ending up at Berkeley…until I figured out with a forehead smack that it's campus housing. Way to make a chick with several degrees feel stupid, Ms. Watson!
Anyway, the thing I didn't like about BLACKMAIL is the thing I dislike about most college-age stories (and real life students): the utter lack of maturity and inability to see past their next exam or bed partner, their obsession with status and the right clubs/friends/wine/opinion to increase said status. And while I didn't care for that aspect of the book, the author nonetheless wrote it very true to life, annoyances and all. There is a massive cliffhanger ending that I kind of saw coming, but the way it was written had me going from "maybe I'll catch the next one if it becomes available" to "I gotta get this as soon as it's released."
Bottom Line: HOT HOT HOT MMF sex and sharing; very little condom use; no BDSM/kink; no sexual assault; no violence/murder.
I was contacted by Nova Foster to see if I would give Blackmail a chance and to see if I would review this book. Blackmail is Anna James Watson debut novel. If you have Kindle Unlimited you can get it that way. I did. It is of MMF Ménage genre. This book isn’t for everyone. But, if you love this genre I would recommend this book. I was drawn into the story line and had to finish this book in 1 sitting.
Blackmail is about college students Mia Winters, Julian Roth and Tristan Masters. Mia witnesses Julian and Tristan being together. They choose to blackmail her into keeping quiet about their rendezvous. I am not going to say more because I don’t want to give anything away.
Let me just say Blackmail has some scorching HOT and explicit sexual encounters. Again, this book may not be for everyone but, I loved it. So much so that I hate waiting for Skeleton Key Book 2! I will be in line buying the next book as soon as I hear it is out! I give Blackmail 4.5 stars and Anna James Watson did a great job for her first book!
It’s been a while since I read a MMF book, and I really missed this feeling. This is my first MMF book that I reviewed, it’s a debut book of the author, and from my opinion, it did a really good job.
The book starts with Mia…she is a student at Yale.
Mia is a sweet girl, she studies hard, she is intelligent and she hates Tristan. She fell asleep in the Philosophy Department lounge—AGAIN during Julian’s speech. Julian being the teacher assistant. When she thinks she could walk away, she hears voices from the hall, coming her way. 2 male voices who she recognizes as Julian and Tristan, known as an asshat. So she hides in the supply closet because she doesn’t want to get caught.
Tristan and Julian walk in the room and they shut the door, locking them inside. After a few more movements, Mia looks thru her crack door and she is struck with what she is seeing….Tristan and Julian in some compromising positions. Her first thought is that Tristan is sexually abused, without his permission, raped. So she starts filming them with her phone. But after a few moments, she realizes that this…sexcapade is consensual from both sides.
She is so turned on…she feels something she never felt, and never thought she would feel…and her phone is ringing…and she is busted…and ohhh OMG how busted.
The first thought of Tristan and Julian is that she was sent by someone who knew about them and wanted to make them harm. But after a while…they realize she is saying the truth, but still…they can’t let her go because she knew about them, she saw them, she recorded them. She could blackmail them. So…they think, actually, Tristan thinks to put her in a compromising position as well, to have sex with Julian and him to record them. But there happens something else. Tristan could not stay away from them.
They attack her, they devour her…together.
So…this is how the book starts.I don’t want to tell anymore what happens in the book because you have to find for yourself. The book is so gooood, HOT, funny, it has suspense and some adrenaline, secrets, and mystery. The characters are well contoured, and I liked that the story was written from the Pov. of each one of them.
Julian and Tristan are like fire and ice.
Julian is warm, calm, loving and sweet. With him, Mia can talk anything.
But Tristan is the opposite…cold, he likes to save the appearances.
He avoids Mia in public, he is ashamed of her. He comes from an elite family, with money and position, he is arrogant and means… Mia is a nobody. He MUST be chosen and accepted in the secret society.
I would’ve liked it if the stuff with the secret society was at the beginning of the book, like an introduction, prologue. Just an idea of what was the deal with the secret society, what it was.I think that were some moments when the author lost herself in details, too many unimportant details. The last thing that I didn’t like was the cover…It takes me thinking to a historical book. In my opinion, this book deserves a much hotter cover.
So…the book was unexpectedly good and hot, the ending was so unexpected…I was like….wtf?!!
Just read the book and you will see. Can’t wait to read the next book to see how things go on.
OH - My - God!!!!!! This book was so hot it will melt your panties!!!!!! So much more than the book being hot though, it had so much merit to it!!! I loved that the people in the book were truly intelligent people who had the most intelligent conversations! I honestly felt dumb from time to time, but I loved that they were people who studied, debated and wrote. There wasn't one thing I didn't love about this book.
I love that Mia couldn't help herself with pretty much an scenario she got into with this book, and I love that Julian and Tristian made her step outside of her box. Julian and Tristan's characters were so enlightening! I loved seeing male leads that knew what they wanted, both in their lives socially and academically. Everything about these characters enticed you too, they made it so you couldn't wait to see what they would think or do next. We were on a constant rollercoaster with their emotions, causing our own rollercoaster of emotions. The whole story was much like an onion, you had to peel back each layer to get a little bit further. Can't wait to see what Anna comes up with next!!!
I am lingering somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. When I was asked to read this book I was excited. Reading the blurb it fell right into the category of MFM stories that I like. Now after reading it I am torn between loving it and throwing the book out the window.
What I liked: - The male characters were surprising. I like both Julian and Tristan, both have pasts and backstories I want to know more about. - The book read easily and fast - Sure the sex is hot and the story gets right to it early on, but there is also emotion there. Love, hate, whatever...it sucks you in right from the start.
What I didn't like: - Mia...we just don't click. - Mia's choice right at the end...I don't agree, but I guess I will have to wait and see where the author goes with that - Which brings me to...I have to impatiently wait for book 2 to know what happens next. I hate it!
I'm looking forward to see how the lives of these 3 will be affected and what lies ahead. All in all it was a good and entertaining read.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Mia Winters is a junior at Yale University. She witnessed a secret lovers rendezvous and is now being blackmailed into silence. This event woke in her however a hunger that she never knew she had and isn't really sure she wants to have. However Julian Roth and Tristan Masters might not give her a choice. The more she gets to know the them the closer they become and she is dragged into a world of old money, family dynasties and secret societies. All of which she never intended to discover in her lifetime. Will she let herself go down the rabbit hole or will her better judgement win out in the war between what her brain thinks and what her body craves?
I loved this book. It is a menage read. She caught two people she never thought she would together in a compromising position and they are blackmailing her to keep quiet about it. Soon Mia finds herself wanting things she never in her life thought she would want the things she is now wanting. This book is scorching hot. The plot is amazing and everything a good menage book should be. I loved how they had separate relationships and then a relationship of all three of them together. Its a must read if you enjoy menage books for sure.
Loved the opening scene in this book: Mia falls asleep in the department lounge only to waken when she realizes she missed her entire lecture. When she finds her TA about to enter the lounge, she hides not wanting to explain to him the reason she missed her class. But to her utter dismay, the TA isn't alone. She observes (and records) an incredibly hot scene between Tristan and Julian. But of course it doesn't end there; they catch her and decide to blackmail her to prevent her from releasing the footage of them. Not having material to blackmail her with doesn't stop them, as they persuade her to develop the material with them.
What started as a way to blackmail Mia to keep their secret safe, turns into something more between Julian and Mia. However, Tristan is always there...sometimes a thorn in Mia's side but always the love of Julian's life (despite that no one can know this).
My only complaint is that the book ends on a cliffhanger. The book wasn't very long to begin with so to end where it did seemed very purposeful by the author.
Erotica is one of my favorite genres. The sex, steam, and nail biting chemistry....Yummy!!! Mia, Julian, and Tristan are college students. Mia catches both Julian and Tristan in a very compromising position. Thus results blackmail to keep her mouth shut of their little rendezvous. If you like a smutty read that will get your panties in a twist, you will love this story. I am very interested to see where the story goes in book two.
I love Anna James Watson's tantalizing descriptions and unexpected twists. The story is sexy, fun and entertaining. After you get started this book reads itself! There is a flow and the sense that you are being taken into an exciting world. Very cool so far.
I really enjoyed this book. Erotica with a story, what could be better? I have to say this is one of the hottest books I've read. Really great job for a debut novel and If you like mmf, you really need to give this a go.
Wow. This is one of those rare diamonds. I'm so glad I took a chance on a not-so-great cover. Be warned--absolute cliff hanger ending. I think I'm gonna have a book hang over for many days.
There's nothing about this I didn't love, including how much I just wanted to smack Tristan the whole time. At least until then end. Then I was like "maybe there's a reason he's so paranoid." Now that I've finished I want to learn about secret societies--I already googled, and they do really exist at Yale.
These characters are smart, they each have a distinctive personality. The female lead, Mia, is not a wimp, a push over, or mysteriously so insanely alluring that she just has to be had by the almost psychopathically focused male leads (like so many MMFs). Mia sort of accidentally finds herself romantically entangled with male leads, Tristan and Julian, and from there the three of them struggle to figure out exactly what the nature of their relationship is and if they can have individual relationships among the three of them without it always being the three of them.
Most importantly I feel like all the characters in this book are actual humans with complicated psyches and backgrounds and thoughts are responding to situations, it's not just characters doing whatever is convenient for the author. The side characters too. I want to know what Theo is up to and why. I feel bad for Leanne even if I disagree with the way she's handling situations. Azzi is just straight up funny. Tristian is one of those, love-to-hate, hate-to-love, characters, and I'm looking forward to his evolution. Julian--I can't tell if Julian is a puppet master or if he's just a geeky hot boy who wants to read his books and have kinky sex in peace. I like that I can't tell though. And I'm not sure which I want him to be. I just want to find out what he is.
Also most importantly, okay, equally importantly to the above, the sex is HOTTTTTTT! If this is what college were like, I'd have about twelve PhDs. Seriously, they're long, super descriptive, they definitely uhh get the job done, and then some.
I am so bummed this author hasn't put out more work. I seriously don't want to wait for the sequel, but I'm reading it the day it comes out.
I love erotica and I’m a huge fan of these stories but I’ll admit a lot of times I feel like I miss out character development and complex plots with them. This is my first time reading a book by this author but she hit the nail on the coffin with this one. What a brilliant debut! Anna James Watson gave life to this story by not only making it a super sexy read but also a plot that left me fully immersed and completely engulfed. I could not put this story down!
When I start a new book I look for that chemistry within the characters and I love when there is a great balance pf hot scenes within an interesting story line. The writing in this story is exceptionally well done and realistic. I was able to feel, visualize and experience the scenes as I read them. I’m told I’m a fast reader and normally I would speed through this read but this time I took my time because I loved how I was able to lose myself in this book.
Tristan, Mia and Justin at first seem like your typical self centered characters but as the story continues we see each of these three characters have their own inner struggles.
I don’t want to get too much into the details because this book has so much to offer besides the erotica side. Just know these characters are fun, sexy and the story line will have you gushing but so enthralled with every turn. There was a lot of manipulation and control between a particular character which I absolutely loved reading about. It really added so much to the story. What I also loved was how the author showed how hard it is to maintain a menage a trois relationship. This is the first book in the series and I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book. We are introduced to a new character that seems to add to our trio and I’m hoping we get to see more.
What a surprise this story was! I started reading it expecting a bit of steam and an interesting story but I got SO MUCH MORE than that. This is a new author to me but this will not be my last story. This story has everything that I look for in a great story. It has a great story line, a bit of action, HOT steamy scenes, a wonderfully detailed plot, amazing characters and an overall satisfying conclusion.
This story starts out hot and doesn’t let up, but in between the steamy scenes there is character development, well written plot that makes this more than just romance. There are three main characters in this story and how they act towards each other, develop, and become involved is the best part of this story. We are introduced to Tristan who is an a** and will put you off in the beginning, but just you wait, you will fall in love with him. Then we have Julian who we love from the beginning and then continue to fall for throughout the story. My favorite character, however, is Mia. She is a strong, sassy, beautiful, smart woman who finds her strength in being herself and finding what makes her free. She holds her own against Tristan and Julian and makes the reader want to be her best friend. I supported her in her decisions in this story and felt like I was a trusted friend who was hearing about her adventures.
I will say that this story is only for readers who love MMF relationships as there is nothing that is held back in the story (which only increased the story’s greatness). Do watch where you read this because it is hot and you might needs a fan or you know…..something (or someone) to help you take care of your heat from reading it. I received this ARC and am leaving a voluntary review, but I highly recommend this story to anyone who wants a hot new adventure and an amazing read.
Where are all my MMF relationship book lovers at? I have a hot recommendation for you, and one that isn’t all smut but a hot book that has a really good story-line and very likable characters. I didn’t think I was going to be hooked within the first couple pages and I didn’t think I was going to be as invested with Blackmail when I first began reading. But I was and I am and I can’t wait for book two and see what’s to come for each of the main characters.
I went into this book expecting, well…. idk what I was expecting to be honest, maybe just a lot of sex between three characters. Yes, there’s sex, veryyyyyy hot sex, but I also got to read about some interesting characters and how a situation that starts with blackmail turns into something they each didn’t expect. There’s Mia Winters, the nerdy Junior that works for her University’s newspaper and the girl who isn’t afraid to speak her mind. There’s Julian, the intelligent, witty, student teacher’s assistant, who was easy to fall for. Then we have Tristan Masters, the gorgeous, loathsome asshat and the guy that Mia deeply dislikes, or so she thinks. ;D He was so hot and cold, so frustrating, yet I couldn’t help but love him.
The book starts with Mia hiding in a closet and getting to witness both Julian and Tristan in a very compromising position. 😀 which leads to her getting caught and blackmailed. Which then leads to one hell of a sexy story.
Blackmail is told in 3 POV’s, which I think is perfect. You get to be inside the mind of Mia as well as Julian and Tristan. It makes it easy to slowly fall in love with each of them.
I think that’s all I’m going to say about this book, other than I think the last sex scene was a bit too long. Don’t get me wrong, it was perfect and given what all goes down before it, you get to see a lot of the trust and love between each character. I just found it to drag on a bit for me. But again it does say in the book’s description… “sexual encounters are descriptively explicit and extensive.” I knew what I was getting before jumping in. Nonetheless, I can’t wait for book two. 🙂
Please keep in mind that this book is a part of a series. Book 1 ends in a bit of a cliffhanger and I believe there will be three books in the Skeleton Key Series.
Title: Blackmail Author: Anna James Watson Series: Skeleton Key #1 Genre: erotica Themes: blackmail, college, enemies to lovers, forbidden love, menage Cover: 4/5 Heat: 5/5 Rating: 4/5
I want to start by saying that Watson's decision to relaunch this book and revamp the cover was a good one. I am afraid to say that I do judge books by their covers, and I wouldn't have looked at this one twice with its original. I'm lucky to have been offered the opportunity to read this, because I very, very much enjoyed it.
Erotica at its finest, there are elements of romance and deeper comments about society, and the characters are surprisingly developed. The sex scenes were some of the most erotic I have ever read, their detail astonishing but never tipping into feeling overwritten. I felt like I really got into the nitty gritty, the little details and thoughts truly making them realistic and relatable. This is the highlight of Blackmail, and I am very interested in following Watson's writing.
I also appreciated the originality of a plot and romance trope that is often overused: the menage theme, including mild 'forbidden love' and 'enemies to lovers' currents, in a college setting. And yet, somehow, the plot itself was novel, intrigue hinted at throughout and only truly coming to a head at the ending.
It wasn't perfect, however. I found the opening felt somewhat forced (although it was a bit of a pleasant surprise to be suddenly thrust right into the action), this aspect never quite believable to me. Watson's writing is also in places a little inefficient and clunky, and could do with a few more contractions and a few fewer unnecessary "that"s as conjunctions.
Overall, a strong debut for a promising writer, and one I'm excited to see more of. For those unsure, don't let the opening put you off, as this really is a work to cherish.
In a nutshell What I liked -The sex scenes -The originality
What I didn't like -The opening -The clunkiness of the writing
First off...this is a polyamorous romance, which you know means that it already has that strike against it--with me, anyway.
I know, I know. It's weird that I love the MFM erotica but not the actual romance between the MCs. Well...I get off on the sex (who doesn't), but I cannot get behind an emotional relationship between three people. I'm all about monogamy in my relationships. Faithfulness to ONE person is necessary for an HEA. There's just too much room for jealousy and feelings of betrayal in a relationship where you have to SHARE the one you're supposedly in love with.
That said, the book was alright. The sex scenes were hot and interesting, but there was too much kissing. Some kissing is good, but if you took out the kissing in this book, you'd lose 1/3 of the story.
Tristan is an asshole. Julian seems a little too effeminate to be the leader of their little love triangle.
The stuff with the secret society felt forced, and while it is a key part of the story, it gets a little meh.
There needed to be one more pass with the editor. There are some missing Oxford Commas and a few passive sentences. Overall, the internal dialogue was well done, but the missing commas kind of pulled me from the story a few times.
Also, the scenes where there in the YUPS group bored me to death. Come on, I get it, Ms. Watson did her homework and is probably pretty knowledgeable in philosophy. Unfortunately, there is just too much back and forth about people and books and philosophical ideals that the reader gets lost and bored and ready to throw the Kindle across the room. And, just so you know, THE WILL (in my opinion) is something given to man by a gracious and omniscent God.
All in all, good read but I don't think I'll read the other books in this series.
A dip outside my norm, but I was pointed in this direction, and the book is free for KU subscribers. I love KU! I do like erotica when it has a solid story attached. This was fun and certainly very steamy and sensual! I was a bit surprised to find it continues in further books, though look forward to reading more from the three main characters. Its labelled skeleton Key part 1 but there's also a series called Skeleton Key, where different authors have written stories that are unconnected except for the title, so I mistakenly thought it was part of that, and not part 1 of a series by this author. My bad...but just in case you have that thought too ;-)
I liked - and disliked in the case of Tristan - the characters here. They're all in their 20's and studying at school/uni? As a UK reader sometimes the terminology can be confusing, and I found a few words here that even kindle look up couldn't help, but context gives me a rough idea. One big issue for me was this Tap thing, its a big part of the story, involving people being selected for secret(ish) groups, and TBH I hadn't a clue exactly what it was at first, but it became clear as the story went on. American colleges/schools/universities seem to have a great emphasis on these lifelong clubs, which are often difficult to join. We don't really do that so much in UK. Same with frat/sorority houses etc.
Anyway, Mia gets caught out, and caught up in some hot and sexy times with Tristan and Julian. The background connecting the trio, the story and the sex scenes is the clubs, and what happens and who can join. There's day to day stuff that makes the story feel real, and gives a sense of grounding to the characters, its not just a sex fest but a sexy story and I was disappointed when I came to the end and found...it wasn't the end ;-0. I'd been watching the % bar waiting for some crisis as usually happens at about 70-80% and thinking "what's going on?” and then realised around that, yep, there's more to come. I'm kind of sad as I want to know now whats going to come next, and pleased because it means the story gets longer to evolve, and that way we can really get to know the characters well. Already I can see that Tristan is so much more than the jerk I first thought, but don't yet know why he acts that way. I like Julian, he's very self assured and composed, and Mia is learning a lot about herself. I think this has got the potential to develop into quite a complex series ( I hope), something that's not often found in erotica, a genre that's dominated IMO by the short'n'hot reads, where the story come last in priority. Its fun to get an erotic series with a solid and interesting, something I've not found very often so far, and something I'm looking forward to continuing. M.Q. Barber's Neighbourly Affection series is one I really enjoy, though thats very BDSM orientated in comparison to this. Who knows how this one will develop though ;-) . I did feel the story was a little overtaken by the sex, and that's why its a four for me not a five, but as always sex is what many readers want, and they're happy for story to come second. Its a very personal thing.
Stars: four, a good intro to a sensual and steamy series.
What a revelation this book was. I love the erotica genre but am often driven from it due to poor writing, editing and a story that basically is just sex scenes strung together. Poor writing and grammar drive me nuts, but a lack of story, plot and character development make me want to email authors and ask them why they feel entitled to my hard earned money. But this little beauty is absolutely NONE of the above. It is written so well, flows seamlessly and the character development is excellent. Happily, the sex scenes could have singed my eyebrows if I wasn't used to the genre. I loved this story. I loved the relationships that were developing, and I felt compassion, empathy, and engaged with the three main players. A lot of people complain about serials, but this book didn't end in a cliff hanger so bad my book hangover won't shift for weeks. I'm dying for the next instalment, but the author wrapped this book up well despite leaving me begging for more.
This was recommended to me by a fellow former philosophy major who wrote me saying, "You're not going to believe what I found: Erotica where the main characters are all philosophers, and they actually talk about philosophy."
She was right. I didn't believe her. So, even though I do not read erotica, I had to check it out.
I absolutely had no idea what I was getting into. I had never seen "MMF" attached to a book before--I've deduced it must stand for "Male Male Female", indicating the sexes involved in the erotica part of the book. So, just a heads up, this is not my genre, and I have little, in that sense to compare this book to.
To my disappointment there was not AS much philosophy as I'd hoped. There were several scenes where I thought the author could have added little philosophical Easter eggs, but I can also see why she chose not to do more of it--it would have been inside jokes most readers would likely have found confusing, or at least, irrelevant. However, the philosophy that was present, namely the conversation about Alastair McIntyre's "After Virtue" was excellent. It's been years since I read "After Virtue" and now I'm going to go re-read it, because the author made a brilliant point regarding the distinction between the source of The Will and whether or not The Will can be rational.
That said, the sexual relationship made me uncomfortable at first... But I kept being drawn back to it. I'd skip over it and then I'd find myself flipping back. The descriptions are excellent and really paint a picture that made parts of my anatomy much more active in this reading experience than they usually are. I had no idea I could be turned on by the idea of two men with one woman but it turns out, I am. I will be looking further into this genre, so if anyone reads this and can recommend some INTELLECTUAL MMF, please don't hesitate to share.
This book begins with Mia, waking up at school and realizing she missed a study group. She is about to leave when she hears footsteps and two men stumble in. Her TA Julian and her nemesis Julian. Mia hides in a closet and after a few minutes realizes she is witnessing something she was not at all expecting.
When her phone rings and she is discovered, she is drawn into a crazy relationship with two men that she never expected and the more time they spend together, the more the lines get blurred.
My review:
After the way this one started, I was sure this was just going to be lots of hot sex and not much else but it ended up being a really good story as well.
All three characters are well developed and well written and the story moved very quickly.
This is a MMF story with some MM so if that is not your thing this one is not for you but if you are into it, get ready for some steamy sex scenes.
My thoughts:
POV switches up between the three characters throughout Quick hook or slow starter? 5 (I was hooked from the first chapter) Character development: 4 Level of Romance between characters: 3.5 Passion/Heat level: 4.5 (there is a lot of sex in this story and it is all hot and steamy) Angst/Heartbreak: 3 (this is not really an angsty read but there are a couple of parts that add some drama) Cliffhanger?: Yes, this story is far from over!
Overall, I thought this was really good and can't wait to see what the author has in store for these three next.
I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I received this book with the understanding that I could leave a voluntary and honest review.
In this book we meet Mia Winters, Tristan Masters, and Julian Roth. One night while working to hard in the library Mia falls asleep only to be awaken by Tristan and Julian coming in to the room she is in. She knows she missed Julian's lecture and doesn't want to get caught. With no other way out she hides in a closet. Little did she know while hiding in that closet she would find out so much. What comes next though can she just have some fun or will she get hurt in the process?
Tristan is looking to be part of a secret society group. He knows that if anyone find out about him and Julian it could ruin them both. Julian is a TA at the college. So for both of their sakes they keep their relationship on the down low. That is until they find Mia in the closet of a room in the library they decided to sneak into that night. They wonder can all of them have what they want in the end or will this blow up in their faces before they can get there?
This book shows us how pressure effects us all no matter what your status is. There are some twists and turns in this book that will have you hooked from the first word to the very end. There is so much more I want to tell you but don't want to ruin it for any other readers. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
