And so I am able to start the final journey for Valerian and Laureline - something I have been looking to complete for some time. But where to start - first of the key thing here is to appreciate is that the books are actually the collections of comic strips so the story has been developing for some time. True some of the earlier books contained complete stories but here we start to see the bigger picture. Which is brilliant for storyline and character development but a nightmare to talk about without spoilers.
So rather than talk about the story - I will talk about the story behind the story. These complete collection editions contain extensive biographical stories of the creators, their other works, the history of the comic strips, and most interestingly to me the legacy and impact - culminating in this edition with details of the film realisation from Luc Besson.
I am always fascinated by the story behind the story and these books and brimming with details, interviews and images - if this series is on any interest get these editions they contain so much more than just a new edition of the collected books

"Rehenes del Ultralum" El doble secuestro de Laureline y del hijo de un poderoso califa, quien detenta el monopolio del carburante ultralumínico en la galaxia, origina una nueva aventura de Valerian. Las cosas no son siempre lo que parecen, y la realidad esconde una trama de explotación laboral a escala planetaria.
"El huérfano de los Astros". Prosigue la huída de Valerian y Laureline con el hijo del califa, a quien su padre ha repudiado pero que a la vez no deja de perseguir. En este caso una crítica contra el poder del dinero y contra el abuso de poder en general (algo muy habitual en toda la serie). Además nuestros amigos deben trabajar para un productor "Hollywood Style", lo cual propicia una parodia sobre la superficialidad del mundo audivisual.
"En tiempos inciertos". De nuevo entran en juego entidades todopoderosas a escala galáctica, para las que los seres humanos no son más que hormigas; aunque esta vez unas y otras estan en guerra... comercial ¿Podrá utilizar esto Valerian para recuperar su añorada Galaxity? De nuevo crítica a las grandes corporaciones y reencuentro con algunos personajes queridos (tanto por Valerian como por los lectores/as).
En los cómics de Valerian las analogías con algunas situaciones de nuestro planeta son demasiado evidentes y esto es algo que no me gusta en la ciencia ficción, pero no olvidemos que se trata de un cómic "young adult". En este sentido el tono ameno a la vez que crítico de toda la serie es justificado.

In een Melkweg, ver hiervandaan... vaart een nogal plat, rond ruimtetuig door de ruimte.
Klinkt dat bekend?
Nee, het is niet Star Wars, maar het is wel de basis ervan: Ravian en Laureline, door Mézières en Cristin. Al enkele jaren voor de sf-film in de zalen kwam verschenen in het Franse striptijdschrift Pilote de eerste verhalen van Ravian en - vanaf plaat 11 - Laureline. Ravian heet in het Frans Valérian; om de een of andere onbegrijpelijke reden is zijn naam in het Nederlands aangepast. Waarschijnlijk omdat 'Valérian' te Frans klonk, maar 'Ravian' klinkt wat mij betreft helemaal nergens naar.
En als je een keer een aantal strips van Ravian leest, dan valt de gelijkenis met de films je ongetwijfeld meteen op. Zeker als je Album 3 - Het Keizerrijk der 1000 Planeten (1970, mensen!) opent.
Ravian en Laureline is een van de oudste sf-stripreeksen en hielp mee het genre op poten te zetten. Binnen en buiten de stripwereld, zoveel is ondertussen wel duidelijk.
De reeks gaat over Ravian/Valérian, een tijd-ruimteagent uit Galaxity, het Melkwegstelsel uit de 28e eeuw. In zijn eerste (korte) avontuur op aarde in het jaar 1000 ontmoet hij Laureline, die niet veel later zijn zielsverwant vormt. Samen reizen ze doorheen tijd en ruimte en maken ze van alles mee. En met hen evolueert ook de hele wereld van de strip.
De wereld is ontzettend knap getekend, en het is zeker te begrijpen dat deze reeks een (sf-)klassieker is geworden. De verhaallijnen zijn goed uitgewerkt en diepgaand (dit is niet iets waarbij je van punt A naar punt B gaat), en Ravian en Laureline vullen elkaar ontzettend goed aan. Heel erg entertainend.
Dus waarom dan maar drie sterren?
De inkleuring is... apart. Ik dacht eerst dat het was doordat het oude albums waren - in de jaren 70, 80 was het normaal dat de kleuren nogal gek waren, dat kwam gewoon door de druk. Maar ook in de recentere strips blijven de contrasten erg sterk, en dat vind ik wel wat jammer. Bovendien zijn veel scènes donker ingekleurd, waardoor het soms wat negatief overkomt en het niet echt uitnodigend werkt.
Samen met de film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets heeft Dargaud in de integralegolf besloten om ook deze reeks helemaal opnieuw uit te geven. In tegenstelling tot andere integrales stelt het achtergronddossier ook wat teleur. Erg dik is het niet, en de tekeningen ertussen zorgen dat er nog minder informatie gegeven wordt dan je eerst verwacht.
Nu ja, ik was niet helemaal overtuigd. Er zitten bovendien enkele ijzersterke verhalen tussen - zoals het al eerder genoemde Het Keizerrijk der 1000 Planeten, en ook Het Verloren Volk en De Ambassadeur der Schaduwen - maar ook een paar mindere. Bovendien ben ik nooit helemaal te vinden over verhalen die maar blijven doorgaan en alles uitdiepen. Uiteindelijk raak ik dan het overzicht kwijt (zoals me ook overkomen is bij Yoko Tsuno, zie daarvoor mijn recensie bij die reeks) omdat het maar blijft voortduren, met allerlei rode draden die ineen beginnen lopen. Dat haalt voor mij het plezier eruit. En naarmate de reeks vordert, begint alles wel meer aan elkaar te hangen.
Ik begrijp waarom mensen dit een knappe reeks vinden, op alle vlakken, maar zelf ben ik er niet helemaal voor te vinden.

The second-to-last book in “Valerian – The Complete Collection”, this volume collects the stories “Hostages of the Ultralum”, “Orphan of the Stars” and “In Uncertain Times”. It was particularly hard to obtain, it went out of print over a year ago and the second edition was not available until April 2021.
The first two albums cover a single story arc, namely the kidnapping and rescue of the Caliphette (or is it Caliphon?), a bratty kid with a rich father. The plot is not overly inspired, but it’s nice to see some returning characters (in particular Kistna and Jal) and a couple of new ones. “Hostages of the Ultralum” does a great job criticizing the exploitation of the working class, whereas “Orphan of the Stars” is more of a lighthearted satire of the culture of California and Hollywood; funnily enough Pierre Christin himself makes a cameo appearance.
“In Uncertain Times” is a different beast. This is the most complex story so far, making countless references to prior albums, weaving them all in a cohesive narrative that ties together many loose ends. The Holy Trinity is back, and we’re introduced to none other than L.C.F. Sat, in a gripping plot that deals with the consequences of experimenting with human nature.
In the end some important questions are answered, and the stage is set for the grand conclusion to the whole saga: we’ll finally discover the fate of the missing Earth and Galaxity. I can’t wait to read the final volume!

You know I love me some Valerian comics, but why did Laureline's waistline keep getting smaller and smaller through the series? I've got one book left and I'm afraid she's just going to be the number 8.

Slimme verhaallijnen, weelderige tekeningen, humor, avontuur en een snufje levenswijsheid. Deze klassieke SF-stripreeks blijkt na tientallen jaren nog totaal niet gedateerd. Wat natuurlijk ook logisch is, met al dat heen-en-weer gereis door het ruimte-tijd continuüm.

Not the strongest of the Valerian books. The last one in particular is exciting but requires you to have read practically every novel up to that point, as it sort of ties together a lot of uncertain plot points. The other two are a double-bill, but not as good as the previous ones. However, the stories are definitely much more mature than they were near the beginning of the series, and I enjoyed the humour and art a lot, so thumbs up from me

In my opinion the episodes collected in this album is the weakest spot in the series. The stories are not to my liking and the illustrations don't feel up to the same level of quality as the previous albums.
But still, it's nice to finally get to read these missing episodes in Swedish, I've previously read them in Danish and now I see how much of the fine details I've missed. And the introduction and bonus materials are great, lots of credits to Cobolt for translating and releasing these last books in Swedish.

The first story starts with Linda and Valentin finally having some money and being on a luxury cruise. Linda is enjoying herself, Valentin is bores. Then the spoiled-rotten son of an emir/caliph/Arabian stereotype gets kidnapped along with Linda and Valentin sets out to find them, as does a bunch of other characters who want the reward.
And things happen and maybe the kidnappers are not all bad. It fast and action packed and I'm going to give it 4/5.
Second story picks up where the first one left up, but falls flat on its face. Where the first one had a solid and fast paced plot, in this story, things just happen because the author wants them to happen. Which might even have been okay, except that the things the author wants to happen is stuff like Linda being hired as a movie star. Basically half of this story is satirizing the movie industry and it's really bad. Movie producers are shallow and greedy and actors are shallow and greedy and vain. Such clever! Much insight! Very satire! Wow!
The other half of the story is about Linda and Valentin trying to find someone to take the annoying kid of their hands, because they don't want him, but also don't want to return him to his father, because of reasons. While thing is worth about 1/5.
Last story is once again dealing with the fact that ever since the author retconned future Earth out of existence, they have wanted to retcon it back in.
The Holy Trinity is back and they're still not funny. There's something about a company, that's planning to make immortal clones of humans. And the devil makes an appearance and is even less funny than the trinity, but at least he's not supposed to be funny, except for a few gags about his tail and the flies surrounding him, which are also not funny.
And the whole thing is a mess and only serves as a setup to the end, where Linda and Valentin are given a clue as to how they can maybe get future Earth back. Whatever. 1/5.
All in all, this collection gets 2/5. You can read the first story and skip the last two.

Como siempre, Valerian y Laureline nunca decepcionan. "En tiempos inciertos" es la historia más curiosa, llena de referencias a casi todas las historias previas.
