Chameleon Assassin #3

Chameleon's Challenge

Rate this book
Libby's chameleon mutation has led to a lucrative career as a thief and assassin. She normally doesn't worry about the comfort of corporate executives, but when she stumbles onto the grisly murder of a rich man's mistress, it gets her attention.

The murder leads Libby to believe her best friend's life is in danger, and she vows to protect her. The killings continue, some in broad daylight, but no one ever sees the killer.

For a chameleon assassin, the scenario feels uncomfortably familiar.

I made silver and turquoise jewelry for almost a decade, ended up in nursing school, then took a master’s in business. Along the way I worked in construction, as a newspaper editor, a teacher, and somehow found a career working with computers.

As to my other interests, I love the outdoors, especially the Rocky Mountains. I’ve skied since high school, with one broken leg and one torn ACL to show for it. I’ve hiked and camped all my life. I love to travel, though I haven’t done enough of it. I’ve seen a lot of Russia and Mexico, not enough of England. Amsterdam is amazing, and the Romanian Alps are breathtaking. Lake Tahoe is a favorite, and someday I’d like to see Banff.

Chameleon's Assassin 3

This was great. BR Kingsolver did an amazing job of bringing back previous characters and weaving them into another engaging story line. My only complain is that I finished it too quickly.

Once again thoroughly entertained by the life of this wonderfully unique and badass mutant security consultant / assassin.

Libby knows exactly who she is and carries the type of confidence that keeps you intrigued, especially in her interactions with others. She doesn't exactly fit into any stereotypical role because she follows a tune of her own. She takes her profession seriously without breaching her own set of standards, regardless of the situation.

A lot of times with authors when they have a heroine like this their attempt to build the character leads to a personality change where she becomes more empathetic and softer, losing the original hardness. However, Libby is consistent without losing your interest. I still continue to look forward to her story. I also like that the author makes it so that Libby is serious about her potentially long-term relationship, but it doesn't define her character or how the story turns out. And this is a huge deal coming from me since I LOVE romance. I'm so intrigued by Libby that romance takes a backseat in my love of this series.

Chameleons are dangerous

This assassin is still going strong. The relationship with the Chamber Security executive makes a little more sense now. The MC's background is a little patchy. She's raised in a corporate family but grows up with mutants and poor citizens. She goes to university and has seen how the poor struggle but somehow she can't quite accept that learning how to read (a good, vital skill for sure) doesn't automatically open up all sorts of life opportunities in a system that is built on family and class connection (and has little regard for the low level workers but has no care at all, for the mutant or the starving). It could happen but whenever I think about it, I wish there was a volume dedicated to explaining how that happens.

She still navigates a nasty society that seems more broken with each volume. She does it really well and with serious style. You gotta love it. The other characters fit well and illuminate the darkness that is this planetary future. Her self deprecation (involving her height and not having ginormous breasts making her unattractive) is kind of real world today and as annoying as it is to accept, it makes perfect sense in this crazy dark world. I'm looking forward to the next volume.

Fascinating Thriller set in a Dystopian Future

I love this series. It’s fantastic from start to finish. The characters are real, flawed and good, in the way we all area. They have depth, which makes them more believable and more engaging.

The plot, like the last two books of this series, is fascinating. It draws the reader on, page after page, because you just want to know what is coming next.

In this book, the mutant Libby gets involved in a series of gruesome murders when she brings her best friend home after a weekend away. The door opposite Nellie’s apartment is ajar and Libby finds a very grisly site of torture, rape and murder. This personal connection drives her to protect Nellie and find out who is murdering people in the company Nellie’s boyfriend works for. The woman murdered was the mistress of a company man, as is Nellie.

When I finished this book I was sad because I assumed this was a trilogy. Imagine my delight when I saw the next book in the series pop up. I can’t seem to stop reading about Libby and her friends!

Okay

I think the author is running out of ideas. A good story but it's really drawn out. Removal of the middle one third to one half would be an improvement.

Enthralling

I loved this story. Libby is a fantastic character, her interactions with other characters were entertaining and engaging, I especially liked all the men who were interested. The other characters were enjoyable. The storyline was captivating, another chameleon on a murder spree. Definitely want to read more.

A sadistic mutant psychopath is on the rampage, taking special delight in killing the girlfriends, wives and children of the company executives who used to employ him. Libby is brought in to first protect her friend Nellie and then to help track him down.
This started well, but became a bit tedious. A murder, followed by nearly catching the psychopath, then another murder and nearly catching him, then yet another murder and nearly catching him etc. Unfortunately the investigation was hopeless, with very obvious clues totally ignored and there wasn’t a lot else going on to alleviate the boredom.

I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the previous two and at times I found it a bit boring. This also gave me time to reflect on the author’s dystopian world, which at first glance doesn’t seem too bad, but in actuality it is a very depressing place, especially with the awful attitude to women.
The final nail in the coffin for me, was it appears if I read anymore books I’m going to have to put up with more of ‘Wilbur’, I really could do without the author’s attempts at romance.

Audiobook narrated by
Hannah Hart
⭐️⭐️
Edward Fox
⭐️⭐️⭐️

This landed on three stars because of the fmc's, suddenly, horrible skills with a gun.
Every time she tried to shoot the psycho, she missed.
It was slightly annoying because of her assassin's skills in the earlier books.

Also, the narration does ruin the book a little bit.

Really good

Very much enjoying this series and looking forward to reading the book 4. Great individual stories, but they do build off each other so a must to read in order.
Recommend if you like paranormal mystery suspense novels. Warning though, thiis one is about a serial killer, and the victims include kids which might be a trigger for some. Very satisfactory conclusion.

A bit terrifying

When I read I "see" the story play out in my mind. This author has a superbly detailed masterpiece series that hooks readers in. The graphic scenes didn't go into too much detail, but they went into enough to make readers feel like they were Libby seeing and reacting to the scene. I absolutely love this series. Also, squee of excitement at the ending.

Lizzy or Libby

I wish she would go by one !ain character name. I understand needing two personas when you do what Lizzy does but the name thing is a little annoying. The murders in this book are gruesome. I was so worried another bad guy was going to get away. I think my favorite thing is how the author adds one new character that touches Lizzy's heart and she helps them out.

Excellent series

Adventure and post-apocalyptic world building continues with kick-ass heroine, Libby Nelson. I am enjoying this fast paced series and it's twists and turns, along with occasional social commentary, mixed with paranormal type mystery and murders. Not for the faint of heart, with a hefty dose of violence and grey morality, but no overt sexual scenes.

I’ve only recently discovered BR Kingsolver and found a new favorite. I’ve addictively read through all of her urban fantasies sci-fi series, as well as the only sci-fi story story of hers I could find (Border Patrol, in the Bellator collection). Here’s my review of all of them in one clump - the bottom line being that they are all easily 5 star books.

Rosie O'Grady's Paranormal Bar and Grill Series

This was the first series by this author that I read, trying it in a whim as it was free on KU and looked like fun. Oh Dear Lord was it ever. Perfect world-building with Fae, elves, vampires, mages, et. al. Perfect backstory with the world’s best assassin (our lead) funding out that she’s been lied to most of her life by the Order of the Illuminati who are actually evil and not the force for good she thought, followed by her lopping off the top tier of the Order and ending up in hiding at the eponymous Rosie O'Grady's Bar and Grill. That’s the short version. The long one is much more complex and the series itself is filled with great plot lines and a perfect story arc (though each book stands alone sequentially, ie, the work fine and end well so long as you read them in order. Addictive fun and a perfect series ender.

The Telepathic Clans Saga

This was my second Kingsolver series. It evolves around telepathic clans (no shocker there) filled with people with different sets of telepathic “Gifts” (like mind shielding) made up of a series of “Talents” (different ways to do it). There are initially 25 known Gifts. At the top are the Succubi, all female, who have a series of Gifts including the Succubus Gift (drain energy from sex, etc). Known as Druids in the Irish clans, these ladies are bad-a**. The lead here is a Druid named Brenna, but she’s so much more. While the average telepath has only a few gifts, abs the extraordinary ones have 12-15 (Druids all have a base set of 8), Brenna has all of the gifts, unheard of. Anyway, she gets into a series of adventures with action, infra and inter-clan politics, and do much more. Incredible stuff really, all set in a world very different (but equally imaginative) as the prior series I’d read, and filled with a growing cast of perfectly crafted supporting characters. Once again you can read each book sequentially stand-alone, and they end with a perfect series ender.

Chameleon Assassin

I had initially avoided this series because I tend not to like a post-apocalypse setting. In this case the apocalypse in question (atomic wars leading to massive population loss and mutations) was so far in the past that society has more or less recovered and has now passed the pre-war tech levels. Our hero here, Libby, is the coolest kick-a** dame in fiction. An assassin and thief, among other things, who has two primary mutations: she’s a chameleon (she can look like anyone or pretty much blend into the background) plus a sort of electrokenisis, and a pretty fantastic set of physical skills (don’t mess with her in a fight) and computer hacking talents. Add in another perfect supporting cast and, well, just wow. I adored this series.

Dark Streets

This is the last of the series that I read, currently on book 2 (and ending with a perfectly good “Happily Enough For Now” though I’m drooling for the next book). It’s set in a world that’s very similar to that of The Telepathic Clans (though there are some differences - Washington DC is nuked in this one) but society is different as the Magi, who beat back (to a draw) the demons who invaded once rifts between worlds opened, now pretty much rule everything. Our lead here is another kick-a** dame, a police detective who is a magitek (a rare form of magic that enables one to do magic with machinery - including computers), potential heir to one of the Ten (the ten most powerful Magi clans who basically rule the world) but also the granddaughter of the man who accidentally opened the rifts and let all the monsters, demons and fantasy beings in. The perspective is very different, part gritty detective tale, part politics and warfare on the global scale, pure urban fantasy. Fantastic stuff, really.

Border Patrol (in the Bellator collection)

This was the only pure sci-fi story I’ve read by BR Kingsolver and was frustratingly perfect. Military sci-fi, the heroine here is the commander of an assault troop unit, it was an absolute total blast (and I’ve been reading this stuff since Robert A. Heinlein’s Starship Troopers was first published, so I should know). Perfect characters and storyline. The frustration is that while it ends in a very satisfying manner, I’m massively frustrated that this was only a short story. I’m truly hoping the author turns it into the first book in a new series.

Frankly, I’m hoping that BR Kingsolver expands every series she’s written, even though most have ended with great HEAs. That’s the sign, I know, of works that are fantastic and easy to highly recommend.

Libby has always known that he chameleon mutation has been essential in taking down the bad guys but in “Chameleon Challenged” she realizes what can go wrong when one of the bad guys also has her ability.

After a day of shopping Libby takes Nellie home only to discover that her neighbor has been brutally slaughtered. She too is one of the elite’s mistresses. After getting Nellie to her home and safe house, a reluctant Detective Donofrio enlists Libby’s help. This is not the first murder and when wives and children are slaughtered, raped and brutalized Libby recognizes that someone else must have her chameleon trait.

The murders continue and Libby must enlist the help of her father and Chamber of Commerce Director Wil Wilberforce. Together they will do anything to stop this sociopath dead in his tracks but this shitstorm runs a whole lot deeper than anyone could expect.

While I enjoyed this read tremendously I didn’t enjoy reading about the brutalities that took place especially with the children involved. Also, I have to say that I am amazed that Ms. Kingsolver can write about such action and violence; yet, won’t write a sexy scene to save her life! Hmmmm! What’s up with that?

Anyway, I didn’t although these annoyances to stop me from enjoying an otherwise wonderful read. If you haven’t discovered the Chameleon Assassin series you will definitely want to put this on your to read list.

Libby shoos Nellie off to call the police while she peeks into the professional mistress’ apartment next door and finds the apartment decorated with blood, body parts and a slaughtered tenant. Libby has to fight Richard, Nellie’s sponsor to move Nellie to safety since she’s also a professional mistress and motive for the neighbor’s murder is unclear.

Multiple murders using the same technique clearly tell Libby a focused serial killer is on the loose. Richard is afraid for himself and Nellie because the victims are the executive tier of the company he works for and their families. Richard quickly hires Libby to both protect Nellie and supplement his company’s undermanned security force.

Quickly, it becomes evident to Libby, she’s chasing herself or at least someone with the same skill and talent she has. A very shocking realization since Libby’s skill is so rare, she thought she was unique. Pro forma for a Libby Nelson case, it becomes crystal clear the rich really are different… and confused.

I really like this world and the mysteries. Sometimes things are pretty obvious and seem to escape Libby. However for the most part it is well constructed and nicely plotted.

I am not for the romance elements with Will. After what he pulled in the last book I would be done with him. I guess Libby is kinder than I.

The Janson angle still has me in a quandary. He seems suspicious but maybe that is me reading into things. Libby is a magnet for hinky fellas!

Really enjoy this world and eager to see what is next. This book was a little graphic at times and had me squeamish. I was especially bothered by how this books killer treated his victims. Mostly women and kids. Very disturbing.

Great narration on the audiobooks. I am warming to this narration style where the male dialogue is read by a separate narrator. It was strange at first but as I binge the series it gets less jarring.

This is going to be a weird review. Why? Because I made a mistake and read book #3 before I read book #2. And, with that being said, I'm not sure I would have even read book 3 if I had actually read the second book (that's another story - it'll be in the review for book 2)

So....because I had NOT read the second book, I was left at the place that Libby and Wil were in a good place. They had just solved the crime and got the bad guys. Then, when this book started and Wil is finally introduced, I was a bit miffed that she was being weird with Wil. I actually thought, "why is she acting like that?" to myself. Hmphf...if I knew what he did in book 2, I would be pissed that she was even talking to him...but I digress.

All in all, this was a good book. There was a completed story arc, the mystery gets solved and there is progression with Wilbur and Libby. The thing now is....is that a good thing or a bad thing...?

good

Libby finds herself needing to protect her best friend when a series of mistress murders takes place.

Libby and Nellie are not-so-platonic longtime best friends, and this book makes that obvious (though not graphic).
Protecting Nellie means working with her sugar daddy, the corporations, and Wil Wilberforce, and the person they’re after seems to have an all too familiar mutation.

As with the other books in the series, this futuristic dystopian story is engrossing and entertaining. Libby is more anti-hero than true hero, and the side characters are just as intriguing.

A well written and enjoyable story for dystopian fiction and urban fantasy fans.

Good story. Always interesting watching the MC meet their match, a version of themselves...
Gotta admit I lost track of all the names/vics along the way, just a bit too confusing.
The same goes for James' cameo, first it seemed like he was out of the picture, then he makes a brief appearance only to drop off again...
Also, Libby's bouts of stupid were pretty disappointing and somewhat out of characters, it seems that's her only way to get the final showdown, plus she should've caught on to that person a lot sooner...

Still, overall a good, enjoyable read.
