We meet Tawny, who is the good girl who follows the rules and never lets loose. She was a girl who was struggling on her own. Without her parents who were basically inexistent, she lived in a small country town where her only family was her best friend Suzette. Her dream is to be a teacher, but the first time she decides to live a little, life knocks her on her ass.
I adored Luke. He was struggling to leave the town to open a bike shop, but his leaving is delayed by an accident at a race. He meets Tawny there and he is immediately drawn to her. He likes her a lot, but when she does not reach back to him he is frustrated. For the firs time in his life he is interested in a girl who apparently wants nothing to do with him. What I liked the most about Luke was how down to earth he was. He had this big dreams but as soon as he found out about his baby, there is no way he thought to leave them behind. I liked how he never thought at this like his life was ruined. He was mature enough to know what his priorities were. He was father material and real insecure at times. Every time Tawny pushed him away he was struggling to understand why she thought he was not enough.
They really needed to communicate. There were so many arguments that could have been easily avoided if they just...talked. But, you know, they were both two strangers who knew nothing about each other but were going to have a kid together. I understood their fears and I understood Tawny's reason to leave Luke in the end. I wouldn't want the man I love to be with me and give up on his dreams only because I was pregnant either.
What touched me the most in this book is how Luke's family was. They did not have much, they were basically living on coupons, but they loved each other. Luke always wondered why his parents kept giving and giving, why did they have to take in foster kids when they barely have enough clothes for each of them. But when he sees the ultra-sound of his kid, he understands why. Because they're your kids and you'd do anything to see them smile. Luke's mother was a sweetie. She tried so much to welcome Tawny in their family, she tried her best to be a good mother. It made me cry most of the book, really. It shows how love does not stay in money, but in small acts.
Their story will stay for a long time with me.
