Within the Deep

Rate this book
Ex-navy seal Joe Vanek and the newly arrived agent Ren Raus are sent on a mission from the private security organization Terra Vanguard. However, the seemingly simple task of gathering information on a US submarine, reveals an age-old conspiracy that proves to be far more than the agents of Terra had bargained for. Their journey in search for whoever’s behind the attack will take them all across the world - from the secrets hidden deep into the Atlantic ocean, through Germany, Russia and all the way to the frozen heart of Iceland. A submarine lost at sea during the Second World War holds more than bodies, and so do the mysterious metal caskets Vanek and Raus find in an underwater cave during their mission. A race against time with the highest stakes available; a global catastrophe, strange outbreaks spreading between hundreds of people in a seemingly unrelated manner, and a decades old secret. New bonds and intentions will be revealed, along with Ren Raus' true reason for working in Terra. Will Vanek accept his partner's personal intentions, and finally expose the web of secrets alongside Ren and his strange acquaintance, a hacker with a dark past? Ultimately, it all lies within the deep.

You had me at Dartz Black Shark... all hail its customised perfection.

Eh hem. Now let's proceed! Desert eagles and high heeled boots with ex-military? Yes, please. Thank you. Let's just say things went 0 -100 real quick. And the ending confused the hell out of me (in a nice way) But the epilogue was there to clarify it all.

I loved the adventure and Joe's goofy, animal loving, badass "blow shit up" self so much! And Ren, his loyalty and love for his brother was so admirable!

Action, adventure, maybe a little "Sci-fi'ish" fun was this book and more! The love was subtle and sweet but not overly done.

Joe and Ren can take me on another adventure any day! Once Joe brings the rocket launcher and Ren the "red lipstick" or "pole" lol.

5 fun stars!

I gave this book 3 stars, rather than 4 simply because it could use a good thrice-over by a solid editor. So, if you're the kind of reader that can't stand the existence of typos in books, pass on this one.

That being said. This is a Damn Good Story.

The characters, Ren and Joe, are well developed and thought-out. As the story progresses, you get to see little glimpses into their inner tickings. I mean, Joe: gun-toting, explosive-loving badass has a soft spot for animals! And Ren: ass-kicking badass has a sexy sultry side.

The plot is solid. (Though I agree with a reader that the ending was a little confusing, thank god for the epilogue).
I had read Kain's other books which are fantasy IMO but this one, I was told, is different.
It is.
I'm going to say it borders on sci-fi. But isn't like alien technology or super-advanced societies. What kept me going was the desire to find out what the heck was going on!!

There is a TON of action.
And the main premise is a super-secret organization works for the good of the world behind the scenes taking out baddies. So, my tv/movie watching is very very limited. (as in I barely watch anything at all. I read instead.) But, with my limited experience, two comparisons come to mind: Le Femme Nikita (Clandestine organization with badass operatives). And Die Hard (Yippee Ki-yay motherf*cker - badass getting the crap beat out of him, picking himself up, using what he has at his disposal, and kicking ass)

The Romance...
Yeah, there are some pretty sweet romantic bits.
And there are some steamy bits!!
It's certainly not insta-love. It's almost slow-burn (taking about half the book to get there), but maybe a little more crash-and-burn. 😂 Well, whatever words to use, it was good. Real good.

I would definitely follow Ren and Joe on more adventures. And would love to get to know a few of the other characters we met along the way as well.
