And in a world gone mad, devoid of peace and conventional family ties, they form a bond, unlike any other. Until a cyber-hacker overrides their mission and they discover a reality that is not virtual. It’s at that moment they question everything they’re fighting for. …and even more troubling, is if they’re on the right side of the battle.

I love sci-fi, and when combined with erotic MM romance written by GA Hauser, well, it’s a story I’m sure to enjoy. “Between a Rock and a Hard Place” did not disappoint. Our story begins in a post-apocalyptic world. The sky is brown, the air and water toxic. Technology provides protection and a scrubbed environment. Genesis is a human whose DNA was programmed to make him a fierce warrior, which is a good thing to be since “they” are always at war. His entire environment is programmed to cater to his every need: food, hygiene, and sex are all available exactly when needed. Rock is also a programmed human, lower in rank than Genesis, but they quickly become lovers when their subcutaneous chips bind them as a couple. They are even required to have sex to come down from the high of battle, so when a third warrior joins them no one seems to mind. Then one day, when Genesis and Rock are somehow diverted outside of their normal perimeter, they discover a very different environment. This one has some kind of soft, green stuff underfoot, a blue sky, and plenty of oxygen in the air. Their descriptions of the wonders they see is hilarious, because they don’t have words for any of it. The leader of humans who live in this environment is a woman named Maxx-44 and she encourages Genesis and Rock to escape to her world. There are a couple of things that aren’t explained and even if that is because there is a sequel planned, it was a little bit disappointing to be left wondering. Genesis decides they have been lied to about the war they’ve been fighting and believe they’ve been on the wrong side of things. Genesis and Rock escape, as the reader expects them to, along with the other warriors. Here is where the story takes a significant twist. I can’t say more without giving away spoilers so you will have to read it yourself, and I promise it is well worth it. This is a book you can’t put down until the conclusion. A very enjoyable read.
Sometimes there's nothing better to be between. Rock and Genesis are soldiers in the future fighting for survival but what are they really fighting for. G.A. Hauser has written a great story and even though it takes place in the future it still resonates to today. Love and acceptance is the end result we are looking for.
I really wanted to like this book, but I was disappointed. There was not much in direction, just two guys who got off and ate food out of packets. Throw in a little snarling, fighting and an AI vehicle who had a thing for the main character. Part of the world was toxic while part was not. The story had too many loose ends for my taste.
