First, I have a few bug-bears I need to get off my chest:
The descriptive 'garnet-green eyes' is impossible to deal with in reality. Garnets, after all, are red. There are random missing words or additional words in nearly half the sentences and some strange sentence formations make it an odd read.

The characters didn't seem entirely believable. First, they came across as much younger than the author states they are. When I started the book, I was picturing ten year olds, not sixteen year olds. I couldn't shake this perception of them for a long time, which made some of their actions disturbing...like passionately kissing their boyfriends. Also, I have yet to meet a sixteen year old with the desire to spend all her time at home with her younger siblings or else bathing her cat.

Eventually however, the story got going and moved away from the humdrum life in the suburbs to an alternate reality that was really interesting, filled with lots of cool concepts. I enjoyed the back and forth between Eva and Niya. The imagination that went into creating the alternate world was detailed and interesting. I loved the idea of talent-spheres and protectors.

When I first started reading this, I wasn't sure I would continue on to the end. It starts out with the cliched pretty girl-average girl friendship, one where they're so different that their friendship seems strange. I am glad that I kept reading, because this novel developed into a gripping read that kept me until the end, even if there were moments I felt it to be cliched.

Although the author intends this to be a trilogy, I enjoyed reading it as a standalone. Even if I never read the anticipated second and third novels, the end of the first is bittersweet and lovely enough in it's suddenness that I won't necessarily need to. I do think the novel could have used one last detailed read for the few mistakes I noticed, but it turned out to be a wonderful read just the same.

Love this book I couldn't put it down, I had to know what happens next and when I found out the next book wasn't out yet I was frantic cus I have to know what happens next. But I would recommend this book to anyone who's into fantasy romance books.
