My journey began living in a basement apartment with no TV and no internet. After talking with my friend and fellow indie author, Bree Lynne Potter, I started a story to keep myself from boredom. Shortly after I started, my characters came to life and I became hungry to know what happens to them. I fell in love with my characters and they soon became a part of me.

Mira Day is a Contemporary Romance/Fiction writer, born in the Carolinas with a passion for food. She loves the outdoors, NFL football and exclamation points! You'll usually find her working, writing or catching up with Friends on Netflix. Her debut novel, Playing House, published in Sept. 2015.

She is currently working on a suspense novel due out mid-2017.

Stay tuned for a follow-up to Playing House coming this September!

From the moment I heard Mira was writing a dark story, I knew I had to read it. And let me tell you, she did not disappoint. I was hooked from the start, which begins with a 5-year-old Brandon letting us in on one of the darkest days of his life. A day that changed everything for him whether he, or we, knew it or not. And let me just say that the way she wrote from his POV at 5 years old was phenomenal. It didn't feel forced at all. Throughout the book there are flashbacks to pivotal moments in his life; moments that led him to be the man he is in present day. Jenny has been his rock since his darkest day and he has come to love her as more than just a friend. Too bad Jenny doesn't feel the same way. Not when he needs her to, at least. There are twists and turns that I didn't see coming and I hate that it ended so soon. I loved the whole concept of the book and I'd really love to see Mira step outside of the romance genre again. She blew me away with Brandon's story and her ability to capture, and keep, my attention. Bravo, Mira.

Did anyone get the number of the bus that Mira Day used to run over my darn emotions?

Jenny was Brandon's best friend since the day she grabbed his hand to run for cookies. They would grow and learn together but could never love each other at the right times. Jenny had a thriving college career and a bright future. Brandon was struggling and barely making ends meet. He was trying to be the best he could for Jenny but he harbored a deep dark secret that he didn't know about.

This book was killer. Quick but killer. It dealt with some dark topics. Heck I didn't see half the twists that this story threw at me till it was too late. Please have some tissues when reading this story. Big high five to Mira Day

As a whole I don't love short stories or novellas. I like a book that burns slow and drags me in to its grasp often not letting go. Midnight Show was the first book I had read by Mira (Author), I didn't have any expectations at all and what enticed me with this book was the cover and the synopsis. I was disappointed when I loaded it onto my kindle and saw how short it was, but was soon drawn in by the opening chapter.

Midnight show is a twisty kind of book. I do love books that hold that lead me to think something then throw it on its head and this book definitely did that. The connection between Brandon and Jenny is clear and I felt the realism of it. This is not a typical Happy ever after kind of book. In fact this book bought some real emotions to me at times and when a book can cause a physical emotion when reading it, then you have to get props to that . I've not read anything like it in a while and when a book stays with me after I put it down, that's rare. Midnight Show did just that.

I don't want to talk about the story, you can look at other reviews for that. I don't give spoilers. In fact all I want to say is read this book. I admit, this will not be for everyone. I don't think I've ever wrote such an evasive review (I apologise for that). My review rating changed throughout the book, I think its because it took me a while to actually decide while reading whether I liked it. I want to say 3.5 stars, at times I felt this was a 4 star book and also a 3 star. At the end I would have liked 'more', but I often feel like that at the end of a book.

Mira Day hooks you with the first line in this dark and twisty story about a man who loves his Jenny and will do anything to keep her.

Brandon and Jenny meet at the age of 5 and form an almost instant bond. After Brandon's Mom dies in a tragic accident and his Dad's abuse gets worse, Jenny is the one person that saves him from himself. Now in their twenties, Brandon gets the courage to tell Jenny how deep his love is for her. He had no idea that his confession would take them to a less than happily ever after place.

This book grabbed me instantly by pulling on my heartstrings with one word. "Mommyyy!" As a mother, I just wanted to squeeze this little boy and tell him that he's okay. Everything will be okay. But that is not the case for five year old Brandon, and I want to punch his Father in the throat.

Fast forward to Brandon and Jenny's high school years and let the nostalgia set in. Notes in your locker, playboys, bad boys, the easy girls, jocks, Does he like me like that?, Am I having feelings for my best friend?....yep....she hit me with all of it! "Oh, COME ON!" was yelled a few times as I read this in the passenger seat of my car on an 8 hour drive home from vacation. I don't think I've ever received so many head shakes from my husband.

When Jenny goes off to college, Brandon crawls deeper into the darkness of himself and the only thing that brings him into the light is Jenny's weekly visits. He finally works up the courage to tell her how he really feels about her, but he's interrupted when he learns that she has brought her boyfriend from college back home. This is where I start to hate Brandon, and the roller coaster of emotions begins.

This book took me up and down, round and round, and left me in a state of "Holy shit." While I really loved this well written story, I wish there were more to it. I felt like everything happened extremely fast and I was left upset that I didn't have more to read through!

I highly recommend giving this book a go if you enjoy getting away from the cutesy romance and into the darker part of it. You will not be disappointed!

It took me a while to write the review. I wasn't sure how I felt by the end of this book. I mean it was not what I was expecting and if you're looking for a cutesy HEA this isn't really it.
So in this book we are introduced to Brandon and Jenny, two people who met when they were kids and a relationship of co-dependence blossomed from there.
As they grew so did their lives and for one it grew in a different direction and for the other it went downhill.
This book is confusing at first, but after a little bit, it sinks in and when it does you realize how messed up it is. As I stated before I was unsure how I felt at the end of the book and it took me a while to put into words what I was feeling. Usually when I write reviews I try for funny, snarky, or sexy. That formula didn't work here.
Immediately when I finished the book, I was like WTF did I just read? Everything inside me was in turmoil and I didn't understand those feelings.
Then two days later I noticed I was still thinking about it and I also noticed I was no closer to putting into words what I thought about it.
That night I decided the book was amazing. The book didn't give me the typical feels, it made me work for it. I had to delve deep inside me to process this. That in itself is amazing. As a blogger you sometimes get desensitized because you're reading so much and it all starts to run together. When a book gives you pause, whether it be inspiration or trepidation you take notice. I took notice. So while I cannot give you a traditional review in fear of spilling the details; because I can't share what touched me without spoilers, I can say give this book a try.
My only complaint that made it lose a star, was I wanted more at the end. I wanted some aftermath, some more investigation- I wanted to go deeper.
This book may not be for everyone because of the non-(traditional) HEA, but its a good story.

The author is looking for an honest review.

3 stars

I have seen many reviews for this book and how they absolutely loved this book, but unfortunately I felt a lot of whip lash when I read this book. I was confused at the beginning and I stayed confused all the way through the book. It is very fast paced and if you can't grasp the story from the beginning you will fill like your head is exploding. I can't give you much as a reviewer because it will give away the book, but I will say that you will be surprised at the end.

Brandon and Jenny have been friends forever. Brandon has been in love with Jenny and has the nerve to tell her. This then leads to a series of things that happen and through it all you will see everything through the eyes of Brandon and Jenny. This story is one that you have to keep you mind wide open for what possibilities can happen. There are going to be things that you will predict, but others that you had no clue was happening. In all it will completely throw you while you are reading.

I know this is a very short review, but its because it is one of those books that is fast paced and if I keep on telling you the story it will ruin it for the readers. Even though it was a different book for me I did like how the author wrote and it does draw you into the story. For that I was very happy. My issues is that I couldn't connect with the characters and that is always the most frustrating part of a book for me.

Oh be still my beating heart!! Ms Day you did a number on it and I thank you for that.

Jenny and Brandon were the best of friends ever since the day they met at 5 years old. They've experienced a lot of lifes firsts together.

Jenny loves Brandon and maybe not in the way he hopes. He loves her for always. Jenny is making great strides in life while Brandon is stagnant. He harbors a dark secret neither one seen coming or could ever prepare for.

This book was action packed from start to finish. I couldn't put it down. The ups and downs of Jenny and Brandon made my heart feel like it was on a rollercoaster. I would have never predicted the outcome of this story. Have your tissues ready for the big epic ending. You'll thank me.

Loneliness is a void that needs to be filled and An idle mind is the devils workshop. Having an abusive drunkard for a father and a gentle, meek lady for a mother can breed a broken soul, a broken son.
Brandon, is motherless at a very early age of 5. With his father hauling hatered and curses on him mother, closing his ears and longing to go with her was all he could do to block out the curses and keep all forms of transfered aggression coming from his father. He eventually loses his dad at the age of 21.
Brandon is now 25. Years have passed since the kid took shealther in his room, closed his ears to hid from verbal abuse. His only family being his neighbors. Miss JACKIE and her daughter JENNY.
Things take a different turn when Jenny Gets a scholarship in a renowned university. Brandon is happy for happy for her but resents the scholarship for whisking his best friend away from him.
Jenny returns from school with a boyfriend_Ronnie who Brandon detests. He wills himself to tell her how he feels about her. Feelings and emotions buried six feet down his heart.
She was all he had, his happiness his joy, the reason he stuck around his fathers house which toke him down memories lane. He loved Jenny and he was going to let her know.
But Jenny has undying love for Ronnie and doesn't feel the same for Brandon. This triggers his inner demons. Will Brandon forgive himself for the actions he takes after his rejection? Sure as hell retributive justice caught up with him.
This book in a nut shell talks about love (unadulterated), importance of family, self forgiveness, Multiple Personality.
A faint heart gives love a second chance.

Intense. . . that's the one word I can think of to describe this book. It isn't what you think it. He loves Jenny who has been his best friend since he was 5, but she doesn't love him like that. She has helped him before but it's time to stay away before it's too late. Strong plot that takes you to a place. Great characters who will leave you dumbfounded. And an ended that just smacks you. This is my first read by this author who skillfully provides us with a read that boggles the mind. To some this may be a happily ever after, it was for Brandon, in a way.

This was a very interesting read for me. It's not exactly a dark book, nor is it a HEA book. There is a lot of darkness in the story, and some cute romance time as well. However the novel really kept straight in one path. For that I loved it! I could never quite guess what was going to happen with these characters, and I was excited to keep reading. My only issue is with the ending. I did expect a tad more plot at the end, but overall this is a great read for those who are not fans of traditional love stories.

I received an arc of this book and am voluntarily reviewing.

This book by Mira Day was one of the most intense books that I have read in a long time. There are so many important aspects of this book that lead up to the climatic ending that I had to slow down so I wouldn't miss anything. This book shows readers that people can easily become something they question. From the very beginning of this story the relationship between Jenny and Brandon pulled the readers along for their emotional journey and wouldn't let go. Truly amazing.

Thank you NetGalley and Mira Day for allowing me to read and review this book.

Wow, just wow!! I am totally blown away by this story. This is the first time I have read any of this authors work, but OMG, it will not be the last. Jenny and Brandon have been best friends since childhood. This is a dark and emotional storyline, with twists and secrets, which had me intrigued and hooked throughout. This is a must read for lovers of dark stories, and I am in awe of this talented author’s work. Brilliant work Mira!!

I received a free ARC of this book from NetGalley (thank you very much to NetGalley and Xpresso Book Tours) in exchange for an honest review. Unfortunately, while I was very interested in this book based on its blurb, it wasn't for me. While Brandon and Jenny's early friendship was sweet and lovely to read about, I found their character development didn't sit right with me. Maybe I've read too much about mental illness but I picked up on Brandon's Dissociative Identity Disorder in the prologue and found the turn of events too predictable, except for the final twist which just seemed implausible.

Wow! This story was not at all what I thought it was going to be. Right from the very beginning I was sucked in I needed to know what was happening. This story was dark and sad all at the same time, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.
Just wow I....... just wow.
brilliantly done Mira!
