I often read of or hear about authors who knew they were meant to tell stories from the time they left the crib. Me? I didn't decide what I wanted to be when I grew up until I was thirty years old - and then sold my first book at thirty-four. Still, it was obvious that I always knew I was going places.

Like so many other authors, I was a voracious reader from day one, devouring everything from Nancy Drew to My Friend Flicka, which I remember sitting hovered over the heater vent in the kitchen floor to read while my father made his coffee.

I moved on to my mother's Phyllis Whitney, Dorothy Eden, and Mary Stewart gothics before discovering my first true romances written by Lucy Walker and set in the Australian Outback. And then, at last, when I was 18 I found 'The Flame and the Flower'. (My son almost spent his life as Brandon because of that, but I spared him and named him Casey instead!)

Why write romance? Because love stories have always been a major part of the books I've loved. Father Ralph and Meggie Cleary. (I did name my daughter Megan after reading The Thorn Birds! Do you see a trend here?) The aforementioned Brandon Birmingham and Heather Simmons. Wolf Mackenzie and Mary Potter.

Even more so, it's because I love writing romance heroes. The men who sweep both heroines and readers off their feet - not to mention their authors, too!

I've spent several years happily writing action adventure romance for Kensington Brava along with hot and sexy series romances for Harlequin Blaze. Now I'm thrilled to be a launch author for Vows.

4 Stars for When She Remembered (audiobook) by Alison Kent read by Veronica Parker.

This was my first book by Alison Kent. I really liked the characters and the story was interesting. I’m really looking forward to reading some more books by this author.

Horrible. According to the description this book centers on a cold case -- a mass shooting at a diner that has gone unsolved for 19 years. In reality solving this cold case takes a backseat to the ad nauseam bedroom scenes between the Texas ranger assigned to the case and the sole survivor of the mass shooting. The result is a "mystery/suspense" novel that reads like poorly-written soft porn.

This was a short, modern, romantic suspense set in West Texas.

Stephanie Monroe was the sole survivor of a Sonora Nights Diner burglary and subsequent murder/disappearance of the employees. The killer thought she was dead. Because the police lacked evidence and suspects she didn't qualify for witness protection, so her mom moved them to another town and changed their names. Stephanie Monroe became Jamie Danby and 10 years had passed. The case was cold and unsolved until the lone kidnapped employee's body is discovered.

Texas Ranger, Kell Harding, is the ranger assigned to bring Stephanie in for a forensic hypnosis to see if she could remember anymore of what her mind blanked out all those years ago.

They are attracted to each other. Kell tries hard to keep his mind focused on his job, but with Jamie putting the moves on him he failed.

The author, Alison Kent, is also the author of "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Writing Erotic Romance." I know this because she mentions it in her bio....Based on that, I was somewhat disappointed on those scenes. They left me feeling flat. Clinical. As for the rest of the book, I enjoyed it--mostly. For some reason, I wasn't able to immerse myself into the book, but hovered on the outside. The author did a nice job wordsmithing in several places, but for me, the scenes needed to move along at a faster clip; cut to the chase; get on with the point, extract info that wasn't necessary to the story.

Her father leaving became irrelevant to the book and more info was needed on the location and discovery of the body. The first detective working the case and how he played a role was not relevant, either. Thought it was unprofessional how Kell spent the first night with Jamie. What about after he left, he never called her the entire weekend and when she calls him he's laughing into the phone as he answers. Little stuff like that just rubbed me wrong.

The sole survivor of a vicious multiple homicide in a Texan diner ten years ago, Jamie Danby is floored by the news the last body from that night has been found and identified. What she can’t understand is, why the law enforcement didn’t alert her or her mother.

Apparently because they decided to do so in person, or at least Texas Ranger Kellen Harding did, because he’s suddenly there, in the small Texan town she’s lived in for the past decade, wanting her help in the investigation.

Jamie’s been through this time and again. She does no remember anything! But Kell explains her amnesia is a defense mechanism, her memories are there, they only need to jog them. With the help of hypnosis. And though Jamie fears what the jogging of her memory might do to her, she’s still willing to give it a try. To assuage her survivor’s guilt and bring some closure to the people who lost their loved ones on that hellish night.

The hypnosis session doesn’t bring much result, but apparently enough to rattle the killer who comes looking for Jamie, and Kell must do everything in his power to keep her safe.

This wasn’t anything extraordinary, but it wasn’t bad either, taking a safe middle ground. Jamie bugged me with her inconsistencies, Kell was your typical jeans-and-Stetson-wearing, "I'm not the cuddling type, don’t take it personal" Ranger (though he did cook and had a great log cabin in the middle of nowhere), and the pacing was too slow at times. It picked up toward the end, when Jamie’s past came back to haunt her, but the ending left quite a few loose ends – was there really a leak, who was the leak, what was the reason for the killing spree etc.

A solid story, but I’ve read better.

Everything ended so abruptly, no explanations, no story why or what happened to killer. I didn't even had any feeling about their chemistry and suddenly they are talking about happily ever after.

You'd kinda think that a Texas Ranger would be a little smarter than your average bear. Unfortunately, a lot of these books featuring some nameless bad guy seem to have law enforcement heroes who seem...careless?

Ok, so 10 years ago, an armed robbery took place at the diner the h worked at. She was the only survivor, and it was mostly due to being grazed - head - and the addlepated robber not checking. I never really understood why he made the owner drive to the middle of nowhere and killed him elsewhere. The h's parents split up due to dear old dad not being able to handle this, the h's mom got a legal name change (and was able to continue being a vet. Huh). And they reinvented themselves.

The owner's remains have been found and our H shows up shortly after the h gets a newspaper and finds this out. He wants her to undergo hypnosis to see if she remembers anything. She comments that she'd always sort of had the impression the killer knew where she was but since she didn't seem to remember anything, he left her alone.

Undergoes hypnosis, remembers a detail or three, goes home. Ok yes; sex does happen shortly after the hypnosis, and he stays the night after taking her home, but he leaves her there. No-one to watch her or anything.

The killer shows up at the office she works in. She recognizes the tattoo but keeps her cool until well after he's left (and her co-worker comes back from break). She quickly calls H and tells him. He collects her and takes her to his mountain hideaway (that everyone at the office knows about). And then he decides to set a trap. Of course, they go to the pond unarmed and without a phone. He goes back to fetch and well...

We never learn the ID of the killer - there was some speculation that his brother worked with the Rangers but it's never clarified. And even when he's suspicious that there might be a leak, he doesn't exactly make much effort to cover his tracks. And why, if you're setting a trap, would you ever be unarmed, let alone without the phone?

First read from Alison Kent and it was good. Jamie has suffered a trauma which left her with selective amnesia of the event. Officer Cal approaches her, asking her to undergo hypnosis to help solve the case. Cal and Jamie have an instant connection. Being in Cal's care is difficult because they are so attracted to each other. This was a short romance, in a small town, filled with a little suspense, and a lot of steam.

This was a quick read. I almost gave up in the beginning when the heroine found she was majorly in lust with the hero after knowing someone wanted to kill her. I would have thought self-preservation would come first, not lust.

Anyway, I stuck with it and found it an interesting read and didn't regret the time I spent to finish it.

Disappointed

I totally enjoyed several of Ms Kent's novels, specifically the Hope Springs series, and looked forward to reading WSR. Nothing like what I've previously read, in fact it's hard to believe WSR was written by the same person. What passes as plot is skimpy and contrived; mostly filler between unending sex. Ugh!

Cold case

I enjoyed reading this book! The main characters are romantic and courageous at the same time as frightened and insecure. You're engaged with the first chapter and held captive until the end. You can feel the Texas heat and the deep fear Jamie has carried for 10 years. Her Texas Ranger isn't going to give up and this provides an exciting story!

Did the author even bother finishing the book before she published it? Doesn’t seem like it with all of the massive plot holes.

When the description talks about solving a cold case you would think that it would be about that. Instead we get absolutely no closure on the actual cold case. No name to the killer, no motive, no explanation, nothing. Literally all we know about this man is that he’s Hispanic and has a tattoo. Also we get zero answers on whether there was a mole in the station. Besides the small bit about he cold case we are given chapter after chapter of cringey soft porn between a cop who has no business messing around with the sole survivor of a mass murder. And then they fall in love within a week??? The ending is literally “woo we caught the killer after a decade & we lived happily ever after but you don’t get to know anything about why or who did it”.

Started off so strong and ends completely unsatisfying. Wish I hadn’t wasted my day listening to this one

I started this book about a woman who has amnesia over a shooting/mass killing when she was a teen. It’s cold case that has been opened and the new guy comes along to try to solve it. So much time is wasted on detailed sex. Sex, and more sex. And more sex. So I began questioning if this story was about solving a cold case or just having sex. 16 chapters in and I gave up. Seriously! I’m not deprived in sex and need not have it novels at such a degree. It was monotonous.

This book was just not good. I kept waiting for something to happen, questions to be answered, clarification on literally anything. One or two sex scenes would have been fine, but it was so over done. It shouldn’t be in the suspense genre. It should be in literotica. The ending felt unfinished and not satisfying at all. Multiple theories are introduced and none elaborated on. The ending was rushed and non climactic

A white knight and the damsel

Good read... fast paced, and a delightful set of characters. AK does a masterful job bringing the two sets of people together to solve a cold case crime. Jamie is thoughtful, strong, and passionate. I found the story believably written. Good job, AK. Well done.

Ten years after her coworkers were murdered, Jamie finds herself the target of the murderer. For all that time she thought she had no memory of the murders, but hypnosis shows her she did see something important. A very good plot with some suspense and a bit of steamy romance between her and the Texas Ranger who promises to keep her safe and find the killer.

Less than 1 star. Horrible! Luckily I listened as an audiobook and fast forwarded and put it on double speed to get through it. The characters had no depth or personality at all. There was absolutely no story to it. It was unrealistic. I think the author just collaborated a bunch of stupid cringe worthy soft porn scenes together with absolutely no realistic story to hold them together.

I wanted to rate this higher but it felt unfinished. The beginning was slow and then when I finally became invested in the characters....it ended. Left me wondering what happened to the killer, why did the killer do the awful crime, who was the leak etc. This was more of romance with bit of mystery added. More details on the mystery would have made a better story.

I really should’ve read the description instead of reading the title and some briefing of “mystery, police procedure, remembering…” where was the plot? Started out fine but was not expecting the multiple explicit scenes. And then it just ended. No like tying everything together, just quick happy ending done.

This book was pretty good. A bit dull in my opinion. I like a busy book lots of twist. Passion but not to much passion back to the action. But with that being said I am still happy I read the book. It was a good story.

I might have liked this type of book decades ago, when a teenager, but now that I'm older with grown children, this seems like drivel. I guess if you're looking for shallow writing that's simply an excuse to have hot sex scenes - this is your book.

The storyline was suspenseful, with an aura of romance set in Texas.

The characters were well described and realistic, which made their lives easy to get intertwined and involved in.

The nattation was professio and articulate and helped the story come to life enjoyably.

Wasn't my favorite for sure felt like I was reading soft porn and a little dash of murder mystery 😅 You never found out why the killer did what he did and why he came back for her. I hate unsloved mystery stories.
