Kensei Tucker is a survivor. Ten years ago, she and four other college students were abducted and tortured by a serial killer who went by the name ‘Nightmare’. Kensei was the only survivor of this terrifying ordeal – saved by a grizzled homicide detective named Henry Sloane. Fast forward and Kensei has moved on with her life. She’s made a home in the sleepy seaside town of Hawkins Landing, where she works as a private investigator at Henry’s agency, and life is good … until her phone rings. It seems that Nightmare is back and has abducted five new girls. This should be impossible because Nightmare is dead … almost a decade ago, Henry Sloane emptied an entire clip into his chest. Mac Jacobs works in Intelligence with the NYPD, and his sister, Emily, is one of Nightmare’s new victims. Benched from the case, Mac can think of only one way to find Emily, and this leads him straight to the door of Nightmare’s only survivor. Will Kensei and Mac outwit an insane killer before it’s too late? Or will Nightmare finally get what he’s always dreamed of … Kensei Tucker?
I think I am getting into these thriller books. Ever since I read Bella Jewel's The Watcher and 72 Hours, I think I'm enjoying this genre.
This book, was hectic. I was hooked from the beginning, and the ride just got more intense and intense, that it will have you totally in shock when you get to the end.
Kensei was the only survivor of a terrible ordeal she went through when she was younger. Now she is sort of happy and sort of getting on with her life. Until she gets a phone call and all the nightmares are back again. But how is this possible as her abductor was killed??? Mac is the brother of one of the victims that was taken, and this leads him right to Kensei's door, the only survivor previously.
I have to tell you that this killer will make you totally freak out, sadistic and sick, twisted. Had me regretting starting this book in the middle of the night.
But Definitely a story that will have you on the edge of your seat and make you feel like you are experiencing everything that the characters are going through.
A new series from TJ Spade and another reason to be totally smitten with her work.
Sweet Dreams is another in the thriller, mystery, romance style of her previous series The Everett Files and totally absorbing from cover to cover.
Kensei Tucker is the only survivor of a brutal abduction, being rescued by Henry, the father figure cop, hell bent on capturing Nightmare - Serial killer with a penchant for sick and twisted torture of his victims.
Fast forward ten years and Kensei has established her self in a homely coastal town, working alongside Henry in the PI business. Life for Kensei has returned to some semblance of normalcy until she's contacted by the Police about a new spate of abductions with eerily familiar signs to her own.
Add into the mix of murder, mystery and the unexplained return of Nightmare.... a seriously hot cop named Mac and his bromance partner in policing and you've got one gripping story.
Totally enthralling reading and a brilliantly contorted story with so much more to come from this fabulous author. T J Spade can manipulate your imagination with her words and I'm seriously hooked on this new series. Bring on some more. PLEASE!!
I have read and loved TJ's first series The Everett Files so I knew that I was going to love this one too. I have to say though that before I had read any of this authors work, this kind of genre was not something I'd normally choose, but I'm happy to say she is slowly converting me.
This book, is still very much reminiscent of the first series in that it's still TJ, but she's adapted to keep her writing fresh, current and updated.
Kensie is the lone survivor of a serial killer known as Nightmare who was shot dead after Kensie was rescued 10 years ago. Only it seems that Nightmare didn't really die and is back from the dead! (Cue dun, dun, duuuunn music). *Pause for effect* So I won't spoil the story for you, I'll just go on to say that you will not see things coming. And that's the great thing right? I mean who wants to know the ending straight away? Certainly not I. Tj has this way of writing that keeps you second guessing.
Sweet Dreams is loaded with tension, suspense, romance and even a bromance. She certainly knows how to give her characters depth.
I genuinely cannot wait for more of this authors work, I enjoy them immensely.
I'm a sucker for a good crime thriller once in a while. But this one? It had me sleeping on the couch with all the lights on. Not that it's scary in a gory way. This is no Texas Chainsaw Massacre or anything like that. This is one messed up psychological thriller. The bad guy is called Nightmare; a guy who's supposedly dead but resurfaces ten years after the heroine, Kensei Tucker, is rescued. Now, I will admit that I had no idea who the bad guy was and it kept me guessing the entire time. The whole thing was plotted out well and frankly this guy is just sick and twisted in ways you don't even realize until the end. I like how the crime part of the novel was always at the forefront instead of it being more about the love interest. I loved Mac and Kensei's budding romance, but it was done in a way so as to not take from the storyline. It enhanced it. I have to admit, I wish there was more about Will. He was a really cool character I would love to know more about. All in all, I really enjoyed it. The author created a rather realistic tale that is haunting and daunting.
This book had me hooked from the beginning. Like literally from page one. I had never read a book by this author before and I'm not going to head over and check out the others she has written. I couldn't pass this book. Y after reading the blurb.
The descriptions are amazing in this book, sweeping you away to the town and it feels like you are right there with everything happening around you. It has its sexy moments along with some funny bits. But it's definitely full of suspense and a twist I did not see coming.
Bravo TJ Spade, you have found yourself another fan girl in the shape of lil ole moi <3
This book was amazing. I loved the main characters, Kensei and Mac, along with all of the supporting characters. Although there's romance in the book, it's mainly a mystery/thriller. I did love the romance between the main characters. They fell in love really quickly, without knowing a lot about each other. I also loved the bromance between Mac and his partner. It added a lightness to the book. I loved the storyline and how it kept you guessing until the very end. It had a lot of suspense and definitely kept me turning the pages pretty fast. I can't wait for the next one to find out what happens next.
This is the start of new series from T.J. Spade and it’s one I hope to see run & run. The heroine Kensei is the sole survivor of a sadistic serial killer called Nightmare who kidnapped his victims then drugged and tormented them into killing themselves. She has managed to put her life back together and is now working as a P.I. in partnership with Henry Sloan, the ex-cop who saved her life in the small coastal resort of Hawkings Landing. Life is good for Kensei until news comes through that five college girls have gone missing including the younger sister of New York detective Mac Jacobs. Nightmare is back but how can that be when 10 years ago Henry shot him dead.
This book has everything. Thrills, suspense, romance, bromance – personally one of the highlights of this book for me was the double act of Mac & his partner Will McCarthy. I loved the interaction between them. The plot moves at a fast pace and doesn’t let up for a second. All the characters are described so vividly that I was able to picture them in my head. With a twist in the tail that you will never see coming this book – I know I didn’t – this book will definitely be on my top 10 list for 2017. I look forward to reading more in the Tucker P.I. series as this is an author who just keeps getting better with each new release and I can’t wait to read what her imagination comes up with next.
I have been eagerly awaiting this new release from T.J. Spade because I absolutely love everything Spade does! And I was not disappointed. This is the first in a new series and the characters are just as detailed and likeable as all the others. I love the realism Spade manages in her mystery and I love her bad guys! This was mystery, suspense, crime, thriller and romance all in one. It's a tough combination but Spade pulls it off effortlessly. I highly recommend this amazing new release. I'm already going back in for a re-read and it's only release day.
Intriguing, suspenseful, edge of your seat murder mystery that will have you guessing just who the real Nightmare killer is. This is an extremely well written book with a storyline that will capture you and even though (in my case and my tastes) it had so much what I call filler detail that I put the book aside and read something else because I just don't like that much description in a book. But it kept calling to me to come back; and I did. I am so glad I did because once I picked it back up I didn't put it down again until I reached the end. Now that's saying something about how well written this story is. It wouldn't leave my mind and I needed to see where it would go, how it would turn out and of course, "who done it".
The characters are extremely well written and quite complex and that isn't just the lead male and female characters, it's some of the supporting characters as well. While the others are well defined as well, it's the complexity of Mac, Kensei and of course the Nightmare Killer that bring this story through to it's fruition. Mac is a strong, intense and fearce cop who will stop at nothing to get his job done. He has no time nor desire to have anyone in his life other than his partner Will. And now, his sister has been taken by the Nightmare Killer and with his growing feelings for Kensei, his inner turmoil is past boiling point.
Kensei is strong, confident and quite intelligent. She's also a survivor, the only survivor of the Nightmare Killer who took her ten years ago, to live and tell about it. Henry killed him, and he trained her to become the PI she is today. She's good, real good and can handle herself in any situation. But it she now has to draw more strength than ever to get through this new case because, the Nightmare Killer is back--- or at the very least a copycat is. And now, with all of this, she also has the hunk of a cop Mac attacking her senses in every way possible, making her lower her walls and letting him in. He's a splinter, he's gotten under her skin and in her bed.
This is an amazing read that will cuff you and not release you until you reach the end. If you are someone who doesn't care for all of the "filler details" like me, push that aside and push through because what you will find is a book that will have you so engrossed that you will find that you don't want to miss a single word of this story. I highly recommend this book and urge you to give it a go. You will not be disappointed.
Ten years ago, at age nineteen, Kensei left New York, and the horrific situation she endured with others, and only she survived, while there. Unfortunately, forgetting it isn't a blessing she'll ever receive. But she has moved forward, even partnering with Henry, the former cop literally responsible for saving her life, in a private investigations firm. Kensei has made a new home, a new family, for herself in her adopted city. She's happy...a job she loves, friends and family, and dates whenever she wants, while avoiding the commitment she doesn't. One phone call from Henry changes everything when he informs her five girls have been abducted...and they blame Nightmare. The name fitting as that's where he visits Kensei, only hers are actual memories of a man that's supposed to be dead.
Mac is an NYPD cop, in the Intelligence division. He's enjoying a drink with his friend and partner, Will, on their weekend off when he gets a call from his captain. Mac had no idea how deeply answering it would change his life. His sister, Emily, is missing. No, they haven't talked or seen each other in almost three years, and though their family isn't exactly normal, he loves her and has secretly kept tabs on her, and now she's been gone for a week. Upon having Will look through Emily's social media to find any clues as to where she may be and/or who with, Will regrettably tells Mac one of the girls tagged to be with Emily at a check-in has also disappeared. It seems they're two of five similar cases in less than a week. The captain shows Mac and Will a photo Jordan, Emily's roommate, received by text. Unfortunately, it's familiar to most cops as it was the calling card of the depraved man termed Nightmare. Mac, after being informed he can't be a part of the case, turns in his badge and gun, resulting in a suspension, determined to find Emily. Will quickly follows suit.
Though Henry and Emily offer their help, Emily's isn't accepted as the cops don't exactly view her as able to be all that helpful, but do offer to watch over her as she's the only surviving victim from a decade ago. It isn't long after the news that Kensei starts questioning things happening around, and to, her.
Mac realizes it's time for a road trip, quite possibly their biggest lead to catching this guy and saving Emily and the others. The only one with a history of what the victims are more than likely experiencing.
As Mac and Kensei meet and begin working together, Kensei's past and present merge, resulting in her returning to a part of her life she longs to forget. While they search for Nightmare, or at least a copycat, as well as working diligently to rescue the women, Mac and Kensei begin to slowly form a connection.
Are they dealing with the real Nightmare, Pratchett? Or an imposter? If it's the former, then how can you explain the evidence discovered showing Pratchett as the guilty party? Will Mac and Kensei save the women before it's too late? How will Mac and Kensei handle a growing relationship while handling the case? What happens when it's solved? Is their time with one another only a byproduct of close proximity? Or are they building toward a future together?
One-click now and follow along as tragedy unites two people, leading them to discover a love that can overcome any obstacle in their path.
**I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.**
This story is more of a thriller and mystery than romance. Yes there are a few steamy scenes, but the beginning of the book is building up the characters and setting the stage.
Kensei Tucker is the only survivor of a Nightmare, a serial killer. He abducted 5 girls and kept them in cages, drugging them till they committed suicide. It’s been 10 years since she was rescued and she is a PI in a small coastal town.
Things are going well until 5 new girls are abducted with the same signature as Nightmare. This time one of the girls that is taken is the sister of Mac who just happens to be a cop. He seeks out Kensei for possible clues that may lead him to finding his sister.
I’m a bit on the fence with my review. I really enjoyed the story, but since it was an advance copy there are a few things that didn’t seem refined that will hopefully be fixed in the final book. There were moments that the story line was jumping from past to present and also between characters perspectives without clear indication who’s POV we were at. It made the story a bit hard to follow. Other than that there was not much steam till the later half of the book. Overall I enjoyed the twists and turns that were written and can’t wait to see what happens in book 2.
Hero 5 stars / Heroine 5 stars / Steam 4 stars / Plot 4 stars / Overall 4.5 Stars Keys: Dual POV, MF, Part of a series, Can be read as a standalone, Kidnapping, Twists & Turns. #MSBB - I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
I've never read a T. J. Spade novel; I have two on my Kindle from the Everett Files series but my TBR list is crazy long and just when I think I'm caught up... I get buried again. But I kept hearing about how much readers loved T. J. Spade and her writing style and story telling so I decided it was time to read one of her books.
Anyhow when the opportunity to read Sweet Dreams came I knew I couldn't pass it up. I had heard so many wonderful things from other who've read her books.
And they didn't lie. Epic. Totally kept me hooked from the beginning to the end. Fully developed characters, completely fleshed out storyline and the wit and dialog between Mac and Kensei is entertaining.
I cannot wait to see where this series goes, especially with the twist at the end!
Congratulations on the new series that will without a doubt be a hit
Sweet Dreams: A Tucker PI Novel, was my first experience reading anything by TJ Spade – and I’m hooked! It’s been so long since I’ve read a crime novel, and it was SO worth jumping back into one.
The recipe for this book was pretty standard to that of a crime novel – a dash of romance, a plot slowly simmered at a nice pace, and a clever twist at the end I never saw coming. It was exciting to see there was an Epilogue, and that there may be more of this series! This crime/romance/thriller was well-planned, a the characters were thoroughly developed. I realized when I book the book down halfway through that I felt like I really knew them, and felt worried about what would happen next. It was hard not to be excited about the budding romance amidst it all as well!
I’m officially a T.J. Spade fan, and can’t wait to read whatever she comes up with next!
This is my first read by this author and what a thriller it was. Kensei is a survivor of a serial killer from a decade ago and it's happening all over again. The killer had died so who is this copy cat? She is currently a PI and falls for an NYPD cop who's sister has been taken. Who is the stalker..is he the killer or a red herring? This action packed book took me on quite a roller coaster ride. There was a touch of romance included and the chemistry between the characters was hot. Almost at the end of the book I had a sneaking suspicion that I knew who the killer was but I'm usually wrong...not this time. Though I hadn't understood how or why or gotten over the wtf factor. The author wrapped up the story brilliantly, and the epilogue... jeepers check under your bed.
I was given a copy by T.J Spade (thank you very much) for an honest review. I loved this book as it had a bit of everything mystery, intrigue, suspense, and romance. Sweet Dreams is fast paced and you fall in love with the main characters Kensei and Mac. Kensei is a P.I who was abducted by Nightmare 10 years ago. Things have been quiet for a few years now it seems like Nightmare is back again. Will Kensei solve the mystery discover who Nightmare really is? We also meet partners Mac and Will who are partners in the Plain Clothes Intelligence Branch. Both are called in to solve and help find Nightmare's latest victims before anyone else goes missing. Sweet dreams hooks you in right from the start keeping you guessing right until the end, even then you are shocked. I can't wait to read more in this series from T.J Spade.
This is a story that will grab you right from the start. Kensei, Mac, Will and Henry take you on a rollercoaster of intrigue, suspense, mystery and throw in the heinous acts that Nightmare creates, Sweet Dreams is a fantastic crime novel.
All throughout I was trying to pick just who Nightmare is. T.J. Spade weaves a story with so much depth and believable characters that will keep you on the edge of your seat right to the very end.
Hooked from page one, I was thrown into Kensei's story and enjoyed immensely her fire and spunk. All the surrounding characters were vivid, humorous, and if they were the bad guys, incredibly foreboding. I loved watching the pieces fall together, and the banter between the characters was so entertaining!! Love this Author's writing style, and really look forward to reading more!! I thank the Author for providing a copy to review!
This is the first book I have read by this author and it won't be the last either. A thriller, mystery and some romance in this book. It's definitely a page turner until the last page. Kensei Tucker is the only survivor of serial killer. She later becomes a PI in a small town. I won't tell more of the story. I stayed on the edge of my seat with this book, it's so good! *Magic Beyond The Covers Book Blog* Received an advanced copy for review.
4.5 stars. This book was really really good. At times I had a hard time figuring out who was speaking, so that's my reason for 4.5 stars. Other than that, this book kept me on my toes. The whole time I was trying to figure out who it was, and at one point I thought I knew, but man was I wrong. This is the first book I have read from this author and she didn't dissappoint.... I really enjoyed reading this book. And watching Kensei and Mac's relationship bloom. I can't wait to read the next in thus series. I hope there is a next one.
With an edge of your seat thriller, TJ Spade has done a very good job of creating a fully captivating story that makes you unable to put it down! With a big dose of mystery, thrill and a slight sprinkling of romance, Kensei, Henry and Mac and the rest of the characters do a great job of weaving this story into one you should not miss. 5 huge stars for Sweet Dreams!
Hell yeah! What an incredible book. This book had me thinking from the offset. It truly hooked me! Everytime i had to put my kindle down, i was thinking of different possibilities. I love a book that leaves you itching to know what happens. This was certainly it.
A few clues i picked up on and a few that left me completely baffled.
I absolutely loved thus new book form T.J. Spade. Throughout the book I kept trying to figure out who done it. Boy I was surprised when I got to the WHAT!!! WTF!!! Oh she's good part. If I could give it more than five stars I would. If you like crime thrillers or just great reads. You have to give Sweet Dreams a try. You won't regret it.
What an amazing book! Definitely a 5 star read. This book keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. Great characters superb writing. loved every word of it.
This book... wow... I cant describe it without giving anything away so ill tell you how it made me feel. Scared...Worried.. Nervous..Exciting...Shocked...Anxious..Thrilled.Amazed.. and it left my jaw on the floor. You want a great P.I. BOOK??? THIS IS ONE RIDE YOU WILL NEVER FORGET
This is my first TJ Spade novel and I loved it. I hadn't read a mystery in way too long and this was the perfect book. There was so much going on, the pace was super speed, the romance just right and I didn't figure out the bad guy! I was spooked, my heart raced and I seriously wondered what would happen next. I can't reveal a lot, so much is interwoven from the past that you have to just grab it and read. You won't be disappointed. I new fan has been created.
Nightmare is the ultimate serial killer! His methods and wicked and horrible and truly mind boggling how someone can enjoy this.
Kensei has balls of steel! As the only woman, only person to ever survive Nightmare's games she's resilient and tough, where I'd be cowering in the shadows screaming for my mummy. So when, 10 years after Nightmare is killed, a copy cat starts taking young woman again, Kensei stands up, checks her gun and goes after him.
Mac's sister is one of Nightmare's new victims - the problem Mac's got is trying to reconcile working and falling for Kensei and focusing on saving his sister, the only family he has left.
This book is truly terrifying but equally brilliant. Definitely one I won't be forgetting in a hurry. And I'll be checking the lock on my door each night!
Everyone loves a good crime novel, but this story gives you more. The psychological element coupled with the plot brings it an inevitable edge that has the reader panting for clues.
The heroine of the story is a strong, independant woman who has been to hell and back and survived. Kensei has recovered from a traumatizing event and settled herself into a beautiful little community where she is loved and respected. After 10 years it seems that life is about to throw a kink into her comfortable surroundings.
Incorporate a couple of hot detectives with flirtatious characteristics into the mix and you have the perfect thriller romance. The connection between Kensei and Mac is impetuous and piercing and boosts the dynamics of the storyline. As well the interaction and banter between Mac and his partner is entertaining and lightens the intensity of the story.
Sweet Dreams is brimming with intrigue, drama, action and suspense, winding up with a twist that will flabbergast your mind.
What a crazy roller coaster ride! I honestly could not put this book down. Kensei Tucker is a survivor-she has survived horrible torture at the hands of deranged serial killer Nightmare. She believes her world is back to normal ten years after her kidnapping, but her life is jostled when five more girls are kidnaped by someone believed to be mimicking the malicious serial killer. Mac Jacobs is a great police officer-his life is is job, but when his sister Emily is kidnaped by nightmare, he's sent on a hunt to get his sister back, beat Nightmare at his own game, and deal with the sassy PI he's met along the way. Kensei and Mac hit it off from the beginning, and as their relationship blossoms, their hunt for Nightmare never lessens. Mac is not only trying to find his sister, but also trying to protect the woman he so easily fell in love with. I've never read a story that has had me so far on the edge of my seat! Every chapter is a new exciting clue that brings us one step closer to the reveal of Nightmare. I'm a big fan of criminal minds the television show, and this book is as close to the action in the show as you'll ever get. I especially loved how Kensei was not at all a weak character. After being tormented, she really never had any moment of weaknesses or vulnerability in the book while the chase for Nightmare was happening. I loved that the author made her such a strong character-it kept the mystery alive. I will absolutely be waiting for the next book in this series! - By Victoria

Loved this book. Great suspense and action nice twist to the plot and oh yes a cliffhanger but in a good way. When his sister goes missing Mac and his partner Will go hunting for her. In the midst of it all there are players involved that make this a wonderful read and twist you don't see coming. This author provides us with an exciting story where games are played and betrayal runs deep, lives are lost and love is found. Kensei is a force to be reckoned with but even she isn't prepared for what happens next.
I love what this author brings to the table. This is the second read and I am looking forward to many more wonderful reads.
T J Spade is a new author to me, and damn can this lady write a good book, normally I struggle with books written as third person, but this book worked well as there were so many things at play, it gave a good overview of everything that was going on.
The pace of the book was very quick, but it suited the intensity of the story. The level of angst and drama was on point and the big old twist at the end, I did not see that coming. The main characters, Mac and Kensei were easy to love, they were well developed and very intense characters. They showed and brought a whole range of emotions to the story. Although this was a quick read, it felt as though the author was setting the scene for many more Tucker PI novels, and here is hoping Nightmare gets his comeuppance. #B2B Lesley
