'Mark Lowery is far too funny' Jonathan Meres, author of THE WORLD OF NORM
The final book in the hilarious and anarchic ROMAN GARSTANG DISASTER series
Incredibly, unbelievably, Roman's cousin is marrying the cousin of Rosie Taylor (AKA The Worst Person Who Ever Lived) cousin. Roman can't believe this (as Rosie says: "How can we be in the same family, we're barely in the same species"). Rosie's parents decide they should go along together and "make a weekend of it". Roman's plus one is his best friend Gamble (probably the naughtiest kid in Europe) - and it's the beginning of another big, messy, catastrophic and uproarious adventure for Roman - with Winnebagos, illegal thrash metal festivals and campsite beauty contests all thrown into the mix ...
Mark Lowery is the author of seven books for children and young adults, including "Charlie and Me - 421 Miles From Home" and the Roman Garstang Adventures.
Both of his first two books - "Socks Are Not Enough" and "Pants Are Everything" - were shortlisted for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize. "Socks Are Not Enough" was longlisted for the Branford Boase Award, and also won the Leeds Book of The Year Award and the Calderdale Book of the Year Award. "The Jam Doughnut That Ruined My Life" was shortlisted for the Children's Book Award.
He is a primary school teacher and lives near Cambridge with his young family.
After Roman's cousin announces she's getting married to Rosie's cousin the pair realise they're going to unfortunately be related to each other!
As the pairs parents arrange a trip away together they each get to take a guest with them, queue trouble maker Darren and tomboy Vanya being dragged along for this adventure which includes a caravan accident, modelling contest and more!
The same craziness but different wild antics that occur in Roman's life happen here as things go completely wrong for Roman and his family in this book. A split your sides laughing read the cunning family they holiday with are all nightmares and I'm truly glad I'm not in Roman's shoes!
I can see why children will enjoy this book but for me the humour was ill placed and at times made me feel really sad / angry. Ridiculing friends and families for being poorer than the other family, open bullying and name calling which was encouraged by the parents of Rosie. Shaming people for the way they looked in a beauty contest and for preferring a naturist campsite. Just wasn't the book for me so won't be sharing this with my child.
Oh, Roman Garstang! I am sad to have finished all of your adventures!
Highlights of this one= Smash Fest (the music festival featuring Babies With Rabies, Sweaty Sue and the Armpits, and The Cheesy Toenails); and a surprise visit to a nudist campsite.
My 7 year old daughter enjoyed it and so did I. There were a few laughs and it would have been nice to have more illustrations to make the story more interesting.
