Serie Liberi, libro 2

Warning: This review contains spoilers for the first book in the series Terms of Release.

Firstly, this book is the polar opposite of the first book Terms of Release. The Articles of Release is warm and sunny and fluffy and sweet and funny and delightful. If you've read my review of Terms of Release, that one is dark and sad and filled with gay-bashing fools. There wasn't any of that here.

Eric Tremaine is fresh from the military, discharged because of an injury that has mangled his leg. His family has disowned him because he is gay and he seeks out friend and fellow ex-military Adam “Win” Winchester for a place to stay and re-group. Win is currently living in Texas with his partner, Sage Redding, far from the town that beat the two men down in book one. Win is more than happy to help out an old friend and invites Eric to live with him on their spacious ranch.

In book one we learned that Sage had been knee-capped during his time in prison and needed to have both knees replaced. His first replacement happens in book one and by book two he has two new knees. He is going to physical therapy sessions to strengthen his legs and his physical therapist is double leg amputee named Troy Daniels.

Troy has never let the fact that he doesn't have legs slow him down. He uses prosthetics with ease and grace and is full of life and laughter. Eric starts physical therapy with Troy and Troy's joy of life starts giving Eric hope that he can heal and be whole once again. The two eventually start a sexual relationship that quickly turns to love. *dreamy sigh*

The sex here was very different from I am used to. Their first time together, which should probably been awkward given their mutual disabilities, was light and fun and hot. Troy is delightful in his frankness that his lack of legs does not define him. Incredibly refreshing!

This one is gonna give you a big 'ol tooth ache folks! I was just tickled pink to see Win and Sage happy, healthy, settled and more in love than ever. After the darkness in book one, they deserve every bit of joy. And the angst with Eric was so minimal that I don't think I'd even call it angst. Troy gets banged up a few times because of daredevil behavior, but he bounces back very quickly.

If you are in the mood for a happy, light-hearted tale of two men who won't let their disabilities slow them down or define them, then this is the book for you! And if you have already read Terms of Release, you will love catching up with Win and Sage again.

Recommended.

A wounded warrior and a physio-therapist walk into a gym...

and you get a whole lot of heat. Especially when it's these two men. Eric Tremaine hadn't planned on being discharged from the army so soon but then he hadn't planned on the roadside attack that ended his military career. So he certainly hadn't planned on the force of nature that is Troy Daniels.

These two men don't get off to the best of starts but if nothing else Eric still remembers how to own his mistakes and apologize when he acts like an ass hat (that's right Ms Tortuga used one of my favorite descriptives for people who behave badly and yes it did make me laugh).

I loved this story it was filled with fun and humor and we got to see Sage and Win...a lot. They by no means took over the story but they were a solid presence and it was nice to have them around. To be honest it would have seemed strange otherwise since Sage is not just one of Troy's patients he's also his best friend and Win is Eric's best friend and the person who takes him in when he's at a loss as to where to go once he's discharged from the hospital because sadly Eric got a bunch of bigoted idiots for a family and they disowned him when they learned he was gay...but, that's in the past and it's their loss not his. Now Troy...this boy has family coming out the wazoo!!! and they're all awesome especially his parents.

'The Articles of Release' was a sweet, sexy, fun story about two men falling in love and finding their way into a relationship that worked for them in spite of Troy's adrenaline junkie tendencies that landed him in the hospital on more than one occasion.

Once again this author has given me a story that provided hours of enjoyment. This is by no means my first B.A. Tortuga book and I look forward to more, hopefully in this series. I loved Ms Tortuga's 'Stormy Weather' series and her 'Road Trip' series and I'm pretty sure this series is going to be every bit as enjoyable as they were.

Terribly uneven and rough around the edges with head spinning, maddening changes in pov. Nonetheless, I liked this mainly because of the feel good vibe, seeing original characters Win and Sage from The Terms of Release so happily in love, and the presence of double hurt/comfort.

Eric is angry and bitter and thinks he'll never be whole again. That attitude soon changes as he meets double amputee Troy, who makes everything look so easy. Despite Troy's daredevil nature, he too has his own hangups and insecurities. These guys may start off on the wrong foot with each other but soon realize they connect in the most wonderful of ways.

The smex that's present makes up for a lot, and I say that generously since this uses my least favorite endearment to infinity. Probably a miss with some due to reasons, but again, still confoundingly enjoyable.

A wounded warrior and a handicapped thrill seeker !

Book two in this trilogy has a new couple, but our lovers from the previous story play a big part; Sage the ex-con, and Adam/Win, ex-soldier, ex-cop, now a security man, have moved from the bigoted home town. Happy in their
new life a on a farm, where Sage can have his horses.

Eric, wounded warrior, has been medically discharged from the military, and calls the only man he can, Win, a former fellow soldier.
Win and Sage welcome him, give him a place to heal and find peace.
Where Sage goes to rehab his new knees and keep in shape, we have Troy, who runs the gym, and he’s had his own hardships. At fourteen, Troy lost his legs in an accident, but it did not quell the adrenaline junkie inside him.
For 15 years now, he has continued to be bold (stupid) and get injured, but he does a lot of good for folks at his business.

Troy and Eric do not get along at first, but that changes The men hang out, eat and share stories, which leads them to more.
Troy’s harshness and seeming recklessness, usually bothers folks, but Eric is drawn to the man, who is positive and encouraging, and things progress with hot sexy times. There are descriptions of the sex with their physical issues, and each man is honest and happy to explore.

We get tension, suspense and new chaos.
We are happy to see how great Sage and Win are doing.
Plus we are hoping Eric and Troy keep getting along so well

Book 3 will be a different couple, but we will see these men.
Enjoy !

3.75, rounded up.

The Articles Of Release is the 2nd book in this series. By no means as angsty as The Terms Of Release, it still has its moments.

Eric Tremaine has just been released from the Army due to injuries received while deployed, and is struggling with the new civilian life. Seeking shelter with his Army buddy Win (Adam Winchester) and Win's partner/lover Sage in Texas, this Louisiana transplant has some difficult stuff to deal with. He's miserable and somewhat reclusive, awkward in social situations, and generally pissed off that life has dealt him such a blow.

Enter Troy, a physical therapist, who's been working with Sage (after that emergency knee surgery). Eric says some stupid shit, and Troy shows off his missing legs.

A couple of "I'm so sorry" lunches later, Troy and Eric start hanging out/dating/being friends. Their bedroom exploits are pretty hot, and fun, as they figure out how to maneuver around with one of them missing his lower legs and the other's legs being not as strong as they used to be. Lots of frottage and BJs, and it was nice to see that disabilities aren't a prevention to sexy times. I really liked that the author gave both MCs a disability with which they had to live and make peace.

Except that Troy has an issue with needing to prove to the world that he's no lesser man, and that missing two legs doesn't stop anyone from being a daredevil. Naturally, he bites off more than he can chew, not once but twice, and Eric ends up taking care of Troy both times, something that makes him question whether Troy is ready and willing to actually invest himself fully into their romance, or if he's just another conquest.

While love creeps in, and their friends with benefits turns into a romance, Troy can't pull his head out of his ass enough to see that his devil may care ways are hurting Eric, and their relationship suffers.

The climax comes when Eric puts his foot down after Troy has another episode of "let me put my life in danger" and balks at anything more, walking away to leave Troy to do the stupid thing he plans to do.

That climatic event was the wake-up call Troy needed, though.

I liked this quite a bit, though I would have liked to smack Troy over the head more than a few times. Still, all's well that ends well, and their romance blossoms and they ride off into a HFN.

The author's writing is straight-forward, without any purple prose, and these are men who act like men (albeit the stupid kind on occasion), and the plot flows nicely without any major time jumps.

A nice, fun, and sexy romance, but also one that explores the mindsets of two men who are dealt a shitty hand and need to figure out how to move forward together.

Just not as good

I liked this because there wasn't so much angst as in the first story. That was sort of the problem though, waiting for something to actually happen. It was readable but just filled with detail after detail of almost every single day. It was nice, seeing Eric and Troy get together and I wanted to see what happened with them. It was also good to see Sage and Win having a good life together. Most of it, though, was Troy doing stupid things to prove and test himself. That did cause some conflict but ended up with too much of the book being about hospitals and recovery.

I also got a little irritated with dialogue. I know it's just the authors writing style but it felt overwhelming at times. They don't laugh, they Hoot and Cackle. Everything Rocks On, or just Rocks. Everyone is called Honey or a Stud. Maybe it's a Texas thing.

So I'm gonna DNF at 30%. I could not get into this story at all.
I skipped the first one, since it was supposed to be 'angsty with angst on top', and maybe that's why I don't feel anything for the characters or the supporting characters. (I know it's not the same MCs:-)

Eric's anger is totally understandable. I get that it is not easy to be back 'a broken man', but it was really hard to read.
Troy's stupidity annoyed me as all get-out, and the relationship these two strike up felt weird with their issues.

Maybe I'll come back to it later?!

As soon as this hit my kindle I could not put it down so I ended up staying up till 2 am reading this book. Let me tell you this book was so good! Loved these characters so much! With everything they had to go through and how strong they both were. First you get Eric who had to work through what happened to him, the pain it brought him and the sadness of the way his family treated him. Then you get Troy with his positive outlook at life no matter what he went through and his need to help others who have been hurt. I can not even put into words how much they are perfect for each other. You get your angst and sweetness with this book. I don't even know how many times I wanted to shake Troy and tell him no don't do it.. I can't say why what with out giving away spoilers only that you will know when you read this. Can I also say there was hotness factor to this book. What I will say about those parts is whew had to fan myself a few times after reading those. All together this was such a good story about two men who in my opinion who were so perfectly matched. I would definitely recommend this book!

I enjoyed this one, for the most part, but it is very different than the first. While I really loved Win and Sage, Troy was a much harder character for me to appreciate. He was really immature in his thrill seeking - not considering for a minute what his escapades were doing to everyone around him. In short, he was a real selfish ass. That is in contrast to how he handled his job - and the two seemed at odds in many places. I liked Eric just fine - but will admit some inconsistencies bothered. He mentions having some marketing classes but never says he has a degree - if he was a LT in the Army he 99% had to have had a degree so it made me confused. I also got the sense that Win/Adam does not have a degree nor was he an Officer in the military - it's not that officer and enlisted don't hang out but having a little more content around the military service would have helped me see those roles more clearly and I think given me more background to really understand the men.

On to the third - which I'm hoping is much more like the 1st than the second.

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words.com review

For the full review, visit http://wp.me/p220KL-5Dw

From that review: "When BA Tortuga is clicking on all cylinders with her writing, as she is here with this series, she not only creates these unbelievably realistic tough, wounded men, but makes us pull for them in their recovery by ushering us intimately into their thoughts and feelings. Doesn't matter whether its their out of control "just throw shit" anger or feeling so helpless that they need to break down and sob, either way we are there with them 100 percent of the way because BA Tortuga has made them flesh and blood and vulnerable."

A terrific series just keeps getting better. Highly recommended.

This second book was OK but didn't measure up to book one for me. It felt a bit slow and I had a love/hate relationship with Troy. He seemed to have a death wish and acted stupidly at times, hurting everyone around him. Not cool. I did appreciate seeing the trials of those who have lost limbs whether in war or accident. I feel like I could be more sensitive about the issue now.

Cowboys Comfort

This second in series is Eric and Troy’s story and also featured big time here to are Sage and Win from Book 1.

Eric Tremaine, a man from Louisiana, has been serving his country, intent on making the Army his career until retirement, however fate had different opinion on that. Following a bombing incident in Afghanistan on his army truck, he is now back in US, homeless and trying to learn to walk again.

Needing somewhere to stay, as his family have more or less disowned him (chronic affliction of homophobia), he calls his best army Buddy, Adam Winchester in Texas. Adam and Sage his pocket cowboy, immediately offer him a place to stay and get sorted.

Sage takes him under his wing as he has had to go through a similar process of damaged legs not too long ago. He introduced him at the GYM where Physical Therapist Troy had helped get Sage back to taking care of his beloved horses.

Not too keen but not wanting to disappoint Win and Sage, Eric starts keeping his appointments with Troy. It wasn’t easy because Eric had made a huge mistake when he first met up with Troy, throwing his crutches at him and drawing blood.

Troy, being the reckless, fun loving guy he is, doesn’t hold grudges and it isn’t long before these two guys are paying more attention to each other, outside of PT. Getting Physical apart from Therapy sessions.

If only Troy wasn’t such a daredevil

‘The Articles of Release’ was an easier read for me than the first book in the series. No murderous land grabbers here, just two lovely physically hurt and damaged men, literally trying to get back on their feet, each helping the other the best way they know how.

Book 3 is waiting for me now to finish the series, so far.😍

This was a very enjoyable book in the Release series. It was great to see the MCs - Adam and Sage - from the first book make appearances in this book. Eric is a wounded, recently released soldier who is a former military buddy of Adam. Rejected by his Louisiana family, he has no one else to call to help him recuperate and so he calls Adam. Adam welcomes him into their home and later Sage introduces Eric to his physical therapist/personal trainer Troy. Troy lost his legs at age 14 in a motorcycle accident and he's fought to keep himself in top shape since. Troy doesn't want to give into fear and is a risk-taker who gets injured occasionally. When Troy starts to work with Eric on his therapy, the two men feel an attraction. Both are lonely and ready for a more serious relationship. Can the relationship continue to develop? This book is different than the first book, as there are few outright disasters and dangers. Both men are open about their needs, desires, feelings, and thoughts. They both have physical challenges to address and some emotions to process. This is a beautiful story with two men who need love and affection and find what they seek.

A different twist.

This was a little bit different than what I was expecting. Eric is broken in ways after his deployment that ended his career in the Army. He also suffers psychologically as well. He meets Troy who is a trainer but is unaware that Troy has suffered from the lost of his legs when he was a teen. They have their ups and downs and maybe they'll work thins out.

Perfectly nice book and story. Better written than 90% of the stuff floating around in the genre.

There was a little more 'tell' than 'show' and the story is honestly a little too conflict-free for my taste. It's all very fluffy and ultimately that's just not my thing.

Eric Tremaine was injured while deployed and is being discharged after some time at the hospital. With no one to go home to, he winds up calling his army buddy for some place to stay while he gets back to civilian life. But getting back to 'normal' turns to be harder than it seemed. And Eric's attitude and mild state of depression doesn't help. He's lonely, bitter about his injuries and in the brink of a temper tantrum.

Trying to make an effort to get back out there, Eric accepts and invitation from friends where he meets Troy. Troy is a physical therapist and lives with his own set of disabilities. A double-leg amputee, Troy is a risk taker who feels he needs to prove to others he's capable. He's a stubborn independent man who dreads asking for help. But when his daredevil ways go to far it's Eric who's there to help him in his recovery.

I enjoyed this book from start to finish. After reading The Terms Of Release, the first book in the series, I was expecting more of an angsty read. Although not as intense as Win and Sage's story, The Articles of Release sure had its moments.

What I enjoyed the most about this story was getting to know the characters and watching them come together. Eric and Troy had an rocky beginning but soon enough they were getting along and exploring the chemistry that simmered between them. I enjoyed those few awkward moments when each was trying to keep their attraction to themselves. But I loved it even more once they gave in and moved onto the flirty banter and heated looks. It sure made for some entertaining moments. As always, B.A. Tortuga delivered on that front!

Of course this story wasn't all about the sexy times (although they sure were awesome!). It was about Troy and Eric living a full life and their journey in accepting themselves regardless the hand they were dealt with. Troy had learned to accept his disability but he needed to learn to rely on others not because it he was a disabled man but because he was human. And Eric had to learn to accept his new self, disabilities and all, to be able to move on to a better life. By doing this they would ultimately to able to share their life with someone--something they had not allowed themselves before.

It was also about friendship and everything good it can bring to your life. With Win and Sage present and providing support Eric and Troy realized what it was they were missing in their life by not letting anyone in. They each yearned to have what Win and Sage shard but neither thought they had a chance at finding it for themselves. But soon their friendship with benefits turned into something more and neither one knew what to do with those emotions or how to move forward from there. An interesting journey indeed!

Keep in mind that although this is the second book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone. Win and Sage, the couple from the first book, play an integral part in the story but the author does a great job giving their backstory. However, I do recommend reading The Terms of Release so you can experience their story first-hand. It will give you an insight into how special their relationship truly is, which in turn can help you understand why their relationship is so appealing to Troy and Eric. It was also a great book, so that's a win-win which ever way you look at it.

All in all, a worthwhile read. At times fun and sweet with plenty of sexy romance and a dash of emotions to round it all up.

So – first you don’t have to have read book one, but… it was a great book and really helps make this book mean even more. Sage and Adam are the MCs from book one and play an important role in this book. Sage has had two knees replaced and is doing PT with Troy, a double amputee who is both tough and a little crazy for adrenaline.

Eric is a recent ex-soldier, just out of the Army on disability. Eric and Adam were in service together and Eric is blessed that Adam offers him a place to recuperate when he’s out of options.

After a rocky first meet, Eric and Troy end up working out together and making a real connection.

Both men have their hurdles to overcome and Troy especially keeps running into trouble. But together – together they work just fine and with little to no trouble at all.

This is a very sweet book, full of endearments and easy, smooth lovin’.

We get to see a lot of Sage and Adam and that, too, is fun and really, really sweet.

Though there are some tough recoveries in store for these guys, the bulk of this book is pretty angst-free and a very, very nice love story. In my opinion, just the right amount of “sap” for a true sap-lover like myself.

I highly recommend this to: fans of the author, the first book, cowboys, soldiers, uniquely abled peoples and sappy romance.

5 of 5 stars.

Audio

Robert Nieman is one of my favorite narrators… but I was a bit disappointed with this one. He does a nice job with the emotion and the pacing – and I love his general narrator’s voice. He’s easy to listen to and overall, I like it. What I wanted though, was all the accents. This is a book full of interesting characters who’ve got Texan and other type accents – but Robert doesn’t do those. I still enjoyed listening to it – just a bit less than I think I would if we’d had some other accents. The characters tended to blur together and I had to listen hard to know who was speaking.

When I picked up 'The Articles of Release' by B.A. Tortuga, I wondered whether my first impression of her, as a writer, from reading her first book in this series, would still hold true. I'm happy to say, it absolutely did. I like the flow of the writing, the down-home, country reality of it that isn't forced. This woman knows Texas, and it shows. She also knows strong, stubborn, willful men, and I'm guessing she had brothers. Or her best friends were all guys. *grins* I was really happy to see more of Adam (Win) and Sage, also, since I fell in love with them during their story.

Eric and Troy have got to be some of my most favorite couples. I love the friendship that develops between them. Well, after Eric apologizes for putting his foot in it. How was he supposed to know Troy didn't have any legs the first time he met him? Eric was feeling sad for himself, and angry, and miscommunication abounded. Luckily for Eric, Troy is pretty easygoing and lets him apologize. Of course, that might've been because Troy, "Mr. Adrenaline Junkie", had just had his second motorcycle crash of his life. The first, when he was fourteen, is how he lost his legs. Stubborn man figured he needed to try it again, just to say he did. *rolls eyes*

The synopsis of this book had me fooled. When I read it, I thought I would be reading about Eric's struggle to get back to a normal life after a medical discharge from the Army. I settled in for an emotional and gritty story.

I didn't get that emotion or grit. The book was light and funny. The wording made the book kind of cooky and it was hard to take this book seriously.

The main characters of Eric and Troy, along with the secondary characters of Win/Adam and Sage were all likable. Kind of a goofy and overly dramatic cast of characters, but likable nonetheless.

If you're looking for a light, funny and a little steamy read, this book is for you.

This was disappointing. I felt no connection between Troy and Eric. And Troy was a stupid dumb asshole. He already lost his legs, should he really be doing all kinds of stupid shit and risk his health? It felt like half the book Troy was in the hospital. How he managed to keep his job and pay the (hospital) bills was beyond me. He has made serious adjustments to his home, so someone with a disability can live comfortably. And he puts that all at risk to do stupid shit. It was exasperating and annoying. And don't get me started on the sex. It could have been something, but it was all hands. Noting more. Disappointing. I wil read the next one, but if the series doesn't pick up I'm done.

The story was okay, at least I think it was. I will have to pick it up and read it for myself. I didn't like the narrator. The entire story was said in the same voice so I was lost on who was talking and that sort of made it hard for me to follow along and keep engaged. I will post another review once I've actually read it.

Thank you, Robert Nieman, you're the best damn narrator out there. I know I wouldn't have enjoyed this book as much if I'd read the ebook version, that's for sure.

I don't mind admitting that I only got it because of Rober Nieman's involvement :)

THE WILL TO LIVE

This is an amazing story to survive. Troy is a strong young man with a bad accident record. Eric is a career Military man with a career ending injury. Troy is the embodiment of will to live. I Loved this book. BA TORTUGA is a compelling Author. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!
