Karma Bakery #1

Rough Beginnings

Rate this book
Imagine there weren’t three main gods of Olympus, but four. A sister who went through something so horrible, so traumatic she left and was written out of history.

Arabella Baker and her two adopted daughters are moving to Boston to open a new business and start over. Things will be different this time with the new names and new life. The twins will live on their own at college—though still right in Boston—and experience something a bit more normal. The store she bought has a hefty price, but the location is fantastic, and she got the best spot in the new development… Which apparently comes with an immensely attractive man who owns it all.

Nothing goes smoothly in opening a new business though, sample days, crazy busy, and fluff interviews taking dark turns.
Honestly, it leaves Arabella asking one main question—why did she think opening in such a large city and right before the holidays was such a great idea?

Karma Bakery is a slow burning romance with multiple interested parties that is full of sugar, spice, and everything nice while trying to find your place in life, doing the best you can, appreciating what you have, and figuring out a way to move beyond a traumatic past.

It felt like an advertisement for baking and I have to admit that reading about this tool and that tool became confusing and boring. Despite its rather short length it felt longer, probably due to lengthy descriptions of baking, hiring, etc. The story itself about a goddess trying to run and hide from her enemy might have been intriguing but it was again overcome by baking... too much f* baking!

This is a difficult one so I'll keep it simple. There's a hefty trigger warning for sexual assault, a goddess trying to escape her past, two original wolves as protectors and a lot about setting up a bakery. I'm seeing reverse harem tags but so far in this one its only one guy. Ends pretty abruptly after suitor number one upsets Arabella. Not one I'll be continuing.

Badly needs another round of edits

I was curious about the story, but the writing is very rough, perhaps it was aptly titled! It is in dire need of editing and there is plenty of room for improvement in the basic sentence structures.

It's amazing that I have read almost all her series and I have not found one that I did not absolutely adore or love

3,5 Karma is coming for you Stars

I liked the idea of the 3 main gods having a sister who got forgotten. It gives an interesting twist to a trope that’s been used aplenty before.

Arabella is a likable character and I like her relationship with the twins. No one can doubt they are family. And what they are building together is really cool. They all bring something to the table (and they made me hungry).

I struggled a bit more with the romance part. Mostly because it’s basically inexistent. First time I read a RH book where I have no clue or hint of if there’s actually a harem and who’s in it. Apart from Colton we didn’t meet any potential candidates.

So while it would not have been believable for Arabella to just fall in love after all that she’s been through and taking into account the timeframe for this book is quite short (1 week maybe if even that) I still would have like the confirmation that this is actually going somewhere romantically speaking.

Nonetheless, an enjoyable read with a good plot and writing.

I quite like this concept. Relatively light-hearted even with some heavy topics

2.5 stars rounded up

So this one was a difficult one for me to review, because I was first introduced to Erin Flynn with her Artemis University and Accidentally Wolf series and I absolutely LOVED them at the beginning. Truly truly loved them. But all of the issues I slowly started having with those books are truly full force in this one.

This book had soooo much potential, but it honestly just felt like a first draft.

There was essentially no plot for most of the book and things only started happening and potential plots developing in the last few chapters. Tbh it was mostly filled cake stuff. Like 80% of this book is just recipes, descriptions of fillings and baking tools and the hiring process. 10% of the book is basically just male-bashing, and I say this as a black ace woman in todays society, so trust me when I say the FMC (and essentially the author) was doing way too much. I am a very proud feminist and a champion of equality and diversity and just a more accepting, tolerant and kind society and AS a proud feminist I can say that there are some instances and comments in this book that made me feel mildly uncomfortable. The remaining 10% was plot, character and world building and that’s where the potential comes in! Excellent back story, lots to explore there with the FMC’s past as a goddess and her relationship with her godly family. I loved the relationship between her and the twins.

I found the FMC herself to be very unlikable to be honest. I know she’s been through a lot of awful, awful things and is dealing with understandable PTSD and trauma, but honestly I really didn’t like her. She was so annoying and preachy and judgemental (though she says she isn’t) and honestly a little closed-minded if you ask me. I wanted to care about her and root for her sooooo badly but honestly I just couldn’t. She pissed me off. I adored the twins though, even if their names are mildly ridiculous (Mary and Kary? And they willingly chose those?? Oh honey.)

Honestly writing this review I realise that given everything I’ve said you’re probably thinking that the rating should be lower, and you might be right, but honestly I’m loathe to give less than three stars to a novel unless I truly, truly despised it. This book did have its moments, and like I said there is lots of potential! I think it should probably go another few rounds of edits and could have done with some beta readers maybe,as well as ARC readers. But that’s just my opinion and I know that it takes a lot of really hard work and love to write a book and its very hard putting your work out there to get critiqued.

Amazing

So I adore the Artemis academy books if you have read them then you need to, so I decide to give another series by Erin ago and what can I say she didn’t let me down. This is another short book series that’s just fun and creative, I really love these styles of books and highly recommend if you just want what a fun read but you don’t have loads of time .

Why did you read this book?
I thought this was a reverse Haram romance book because that's how it was labeled on Goodreads, but it was just a fantasy story.

What format did you read this book in?
Read it as an ebook on Kindle.

Is this an educational book or a book for entertainment?
I read this book for pure entertainment purposes.

What genres do you think this book belongs to?
Chick Lit, Contemporary, Fantasy, Paranormal.

What were your favorites part in the book? SPOILER WARNING
One of my favorite parts of the book was when she didn't fall head over heels for (who I assume is the love interest,) Colton Knight. I liked the fact that she didn't take any disrespect from the alpha of the local werewolf pack and put him in his place. Lastly, the food that was described in the book constantly made me hungry.

Who would you suggest this book to?
I would suggest this book to anyone who wants a strong female main character, cares about feminist issues, is interested in Greek mythology, and likes books about bakeries.

What is your general opinion/ rating of this book? SPOILER WARNING
I think I would have given this book a better rating if it was labeled correctly. I thoroughly enjoyed it as chick-lit fiction, but not as a romance and there was no hint of a reverse harem. I really liked the book because it was so different than what I'm used to. I'm not certain but this could be a reverse harem romance later on in this series since this is one of many books. The author doesn't amazing job creating this bakery that the reader can easily get invested in. Also the main character’s tragic back story is balanced out by the strength and leadership that she shows as a goddess. I absolutely adored the twins. I want to continue the series but this will have to be on the back burner since my reading list is so long. Overall, it's a great story just not what I was expecting when I read it.

Are there any cliché scenes or concepts? (If yes, does the author add something unique to them?)
There were a couple cliche concepts that I'm happy to say the author flipped the script on. It's a common cliche for a male alpha werewolf to claim females into their pack. I love the fact the author showed how misogynistic that was and as a goddess how that was unacceptable.

★★☆☆☆ – Buried Potential Under Endless Bakery Detours

The Karma Bakery series (Books 1–7) has a genuinely interesting story somewhere in there - but it’s buried under an exhausting amount of bakery details. Page after page focuses on how the bakery is run, what products are made, and all the business logistics. It’s so excessive that it overshadows the actual plot. I picked this up for a reverse harem story, not a step-by-step manual on running a bakery. If you don’t skim those sections, you’ll never get through the series.

Which is a shame, because the core concept could be great.

The FMC: Arabella/Kismet

Arabella/Kismet is a unique FMC with a tragic past, interesting powers, and a compelling connection to the Gods. Her slow-build harem has potential, and her two brothers are genuinely wonderful characters. But the actual story is buried so deep it becomes frustrating instead of fun.

She’s strong, realistic, and inspiring despite everything she’s been through. I genuinely like her; it’s the men around her that drag the story down.

The MMCs:
Colton – Absolutely cannot stand him. Pushy, toxic, and somehow constantly forgiven despite doing far worse than anyone else. His presence becomes more irritating every book.
Isiah – Trying hard, good energy, but the FMC doesn’t need two warlocks—especially not when one is Colton.
Jamie – Sweet, but their dynamic feels oddly parent–child, and the age gap just makes it uncomfortable at times.
Demarcus – The sudden blow-up between him and the FMC made zero sense. It felt forced and out of character, as if drama was added just for the sake of it. Honestly hope he gets another chance, especially considering how much worse others have been.

There were even interesting side threads - like the mysterious ancient vampire who briefly appears; yet they’re dropped in favor of more bakery content.

And honestly, for a Goddess like Arabella/Kismet… four men hardly feel like enough.

Final Thoughts:
This series has strong ideas, intriguing lore, and a memorable FMC, but the pacing, unnecessary detail, and character inconsistency make it a tiring read. Also, with a series this long, a character glossary is desperately needed.

There’s potential here; but you have to dig through a lot to find it.

This book opens with a dream sequence, where we see the beginning of Zeus, Poseidon, Hades and their unnamed sister, who is having the dream.

Starting over with new identities, Arabella Baker and her daughters Mary and Kary Conan, are almost to their new home in Boston. Mary and Kary will make a stop while Arabella heads directly to the building she purchased. Her bakery will be on the first level with the second level for additional prep and assembling, the third is her apartment.

The first person we meet is Colton Knight, the property developer. He was jogging through the area when Arabella arrived and didn't realize who she was until she introduced herself.

It smoothed over but later after she posted her ladies or gentlemen escorted by ladies sign, he protests. Kary takes over and explains, not gently the reason why.

Now Colton is going to be helpful but there are areas he has no clue about. Arabella is a goddess, her daughters are Lycaon wolves and humans just don't know about them.

So, we meet an arrogant wolf Alpha, a helpful witch Gina, who informs her of vampires working the night shift at the docks and also recommends a warlock coven for her fish needs. The most important thing Gina informs her of is that she has a curse on her and that's why men act the way they do around her. Seems the only one not really affected is Colton, which I find very interesting.

Arabella has hired help and I love her new employees.

There is much going on in this book, as they prepare to open the bakery. Not only with the normal stuff but also the paranormal. It's a good thing Arabella is a goddess as she can double and triple things, make equipment appear and so much more.

I laughed, cried and even rolled my eyes a few times.

Arabella (as she now calls herself) is a goddess in hiding. Thousands of years ago she was assaulted and nearly destroyed, and since then she has lived under the radar. As "Rough Beginnings" opens, she has taken on a new alias, and is coming to Boston to open a bakery.

Much, if not most, of RB follows the nuts and bolts of opening a bakery - furnishing and equipping the bakery, finding help, deciding what bake, baking it... That part of the book works well, which I would not have expected.

There isn't much tension in the book, because - despite the trauma Arabella still caries with her - she is still a goddess and can still solve most problems through, well, miracles. Equipment not delivered in time? Poof, it's there. Too many cakes to bake in too little time? Poof, they're there. Someone won't take 'no' for an answer? Poof, they've just taken 'no' for an answer.

The book was fun to read. The characters are likeable, and the book's narrow focus - the protagonist is trying to sell excellent cakes at excellent prices, not to overthrow Olympus - keeps the reader engaged and interested.

Entertaining Easy Read

Similar vibe to cozy mysteries this book was enjoyable to read. The premise is that the FMC is the sister of Zeus, Poseidon and Hades but she was a chaste goddess who was SA by her priest in her temple. She suffers nightmares even in present day of the event. Along with twin true lycan sisters they open an unique bakery in Boston (apparently they have done this often the last time being in Texas). Due to the trauma experienced the bakery is a female only establishment which rattles many a male. This book covers before the bakery has even opened; hiring of staff and getting the bakery ready.

There are triggers due to previously mentioned SA, but altogether the storyline is great.

A real change from my usual reads but I am enjoying it and ready to read the 2nd book.
There is humour, female bonding (non-s3xual) mythology, supernatural characters, strong female leads

Fabulous

I love all of Erin R Flynn’s writing and the Karma Bakery series is one of my favorites. This is the third time I’m reading this book, it’s that good, and I like to reread the series before I start a new book. I think Amazon should pay authors for each time you read a book on Kindle Unlimited. When I can afford to I will purchase all of Flynn’s books because she deserves to get paid for every read. Also, I really loved the Kelly Murphy series of hers. Not as many books in it so if you haven’t given it a shot, please read it. I want more in that series too. I’m greedy for her writing. Thanks Erin!

Absolutely loved Arabella (and Mary and Kary). So sad about her background and what a complete wanker Zeus is. And Hera (though that fairly obvs cuz fits with mythology). Colton is coming on hard though. I had good hopes for him. We’ll see if it get better. Though it gives me vibes of Inez and her men.
Absolutely devoured this. Did not want to go to work and have to stop reading it.
I have hope for book two and that the coven can help her 🤞🏽🤞🏽

Potential?

Was about to put it down as one of biggest wastes of time when in last 50 pages the plot appeared. I now want to read the next in series but I won’t give it as long to develop. I’m not sure where the gods and goddesses part rolls in, and the bakery plot line may overwhelm the endearing fantasy but excellent character development so I’m in for now.

Enjoyable read

I love the author so gave this a try and it's turned into one of my favourite series. I love the food side of this story and it has all the things I love about this author - great character, brilliant storyline and good amount of romance. This is a great take on the theme. Just a really good read

This is a very fast read. It is cute and has a very slow burn romance which I love. It's fun to see the world of baking which I am not familiar with at all. The story telling and writing is also done well.

An interesting take on supernatural beings in everyday life. A bit slow, but probably because the stage was being set and characters introduced. Looking forward next book in series.

High energy and creative

I don't normally say this about a work of fiction, but I feel like I learned a lot. The setting is unique and the relationships are dynamic. The cast of characters evolved in a very organic way. I highly recommend this book.

i wanna give 5 stars

But, it seems the theme for all of this authors books is an extreme feminist.

The overall plot excluding that, is fantastic. This book is a slower burn.

Lots of food talk like her other series. But I love food so bring it on lol.

fun take on Olympus

Love this take on the Greek gods and whilst the stories deal with some very dark themes, the stories always make me feel happy with the love and acceptance of some characters.

Love the stories that Erin writes 🖤
