Yeah Rilla's life has taken an interesting turn

Rilla defeated the trolls who tried to abduct the Prince and now as been conscripted to the Academy. A place where no magical beings are allowed in, unless they want to be killed
She faces a dangerous quest by entering and keeping a secret she doesn't know much about
But it seems other may have more information about her, she risks losing everything if she reveals herself

And to Make things worse, Madam Florian has made things extremely difficult for her at the Academy.
Making her sleep in the library, students ignoring her or glaring. She has been hated by some
But she has also gain a reputation of being a fierce warrior

Rilla's life as turned out differently, she is popular and hated. She has gain the trust and friendship of Prince Armin but is still under the threat that if she fails the Academy she must marry Lord Bluebeard

With so much on the line, Rilla still goes to extreme measures to protect those she cares for but will it destroy her in the process ?

I received a free copy of this book from the author and voluntarily decided to review it.

The Academy by Cordelia Castel is the second book in the Perrault Chronicles and continues Cendrilla's adventures in the fascinating fairy tale world begun in the first story. The book is written in third-person from Cendrilla's point-of-view and follows the young heroine as she becomes a student at the Academy.

This story is just as good as the first and expands Cendrilla's world, introducing new friends and antagonists, the problem becomes discovering which is which. The story drew me in right away, as it picked up right where the first ended. I read the entire book in one sitting because I found myself unable to put it down.

Action and adventure combined with mystery and romance create the perfect continuation of Cendrilla's story. If you enjoyed the first book do yourself a favor and grab this one too, you won't be disappointed.

Recommended to fans of fairy tales, fantasy adventures, and strong female protagonists

Saving the Prince put her into the spotlight and gave her certain power. But it also made more gossips and enemies...
After saving prince Armin from the trolls, Rilla ended up in the palace as the prince's guest and got introduced to some important people. However, her brave act got her conscripted to the Academy, and she is now forced to train alongside other minors who defeated magical creatures. Afraid of exposing her powers, she struggles to keep her composure, especially facing the amount of hatred, bullying, and despising attitude not only from the royals. Nevertheless, she makes some true friends, and works tirelessly to avoid the forced marriage.
Even better than the first book, following Rilla's story leads us deeper into the intricate setup of the Seven Kingdoms. Strange powers are in the rule, no one is to be trusted, and some people make more trouble than they are worth. But I totally enjoyed every single sentence of the book. Great characters, unique and complex, show their complicated personalities in distinctive light. Sometimes, mysterious motives are the driving forces of the tale, but it only intrigued me more and deepened the connection. This book was a fast read, brilliantly written and plotted out, and absolutely persuasive to continue the journey.

'The Academy' is the second book in 'The Seven Kingdoms' series and is just as wonderful a read as the first! Cordelia Castel has created an intriguing world that combines elements from all the classic fairy tales while reinventing them into something that is very original. It has characters that you love and characters that you love to hate. 'The Academy' picks up where 'Cendrilla' left off with her getting conscripted into military service against magical creatures, but Cendrilla has a secret, one that she understands very little about and could get her killed if discovered. This is an action-filled story of a girl who knows next-to-nothing about herself facing and overcoming the trials and villains in her life to succeed, all the while trying to discover who she is, where she belongs, and helping to save a kingdom along the way.

Despite the grammar mistakes, this was a good book.

For my clean readers: violence-attempted murder, fighting, abduction, poisoning, bullying, and torture. No language. Romance-implied sexual nuances, men stealing kisses(literally), and chaste kisses.

Another superb book in the Cendrilla Perrault series! I had so much fun reading this that the real world around me completely vanished and I was a part of The Seven Kingdoms!

Be enchanted with fairy tales in the fantasy book "The Academy", the second in the Perrault Chronicles, by Cordelia Castel. Your inner child will be screaming with delight!

From the first page, the fairy tales appear to come alive on the pages. As with all the "Perrault Chronicles" many fairy tales are weaved together with the focus still remaining focused on our lead lady, Cendrilla (Rilla). In "The Academy" Rilla's journey brings her to face many evils straight on, in the never ending struggle for her independence and to be free from Lord Bluebeard and his pursuit to make her his wife. In the first series "Cendrilla", Lord Bluebeard paid the weight of Cendrilla in gold to her step-family, and now with her escaping him on many occasions, makes Lord Bluebeard more angry and set on having Rilla as his new bride. A reprieve from running seems in sight, when the Crown Prince, after Rilla bravely saved him, offers her a place in "The Academy". This is a distinguished place where the highly skilled fighters of the realm are trained to battle against all magic in the land. Plus it seems Rilla has no choice but to begin training. However, the honorable position in The Academy doesn't come without risks, as the one big secret she is hiding, her new ability, that helped her save the Crown Prince, can't be called upon. Nor can her secret weapon from the past. (Sorry no Spoilers!). It seems where ever Rilla's journey takes her, new dangers arise. Now with Crown Prince's public declaration as Rilla as his savior, and the realm's new and inspiring savior against evil, Rilla is no longer able to hide in the shadows. She must now faces some even harder trials. Rilla is left at a cross road. Will she successfully graduate through The Academy on her skills without her new ability? And what happens if she doesn't? What will be her fate? And with Lord Bluebeard always stalking her, what can she do to escape his evil clutches? Questions that will leave readers on the edge of their seat in anticipation, hoping that Rilla gets a chance to find a happy ending.

The stage of excitement is set from the very beginning! The front cover, portrays a more mature Cendrilla, in a captivating and clearly more distinguished pink ball gown, looking down. Already there is a glimpse of Rilla that the journey ahead is fraught with many challenges that seem to take away her former innocence and brightness. The title "The Academy" captures the focus of the second installment. Beautifully embossed in captured in gold and adorned by a gorgeous edging, really makes the series cover stand out. All combined, the cover page is very alluring and really does capture the essence of the book.

Cordelia Castel has true gift with writing that makes characters and their stories come alive. In this 2nd installment of "The Perrault Chronicles" she doesn't disappoint,. As the plot continues to develop, so does the lead character of Rilla. Even though her journey seems to be full of treachery, Rilla still stands up for herself, and continues to fight for her independence. Ambition and wanting to make her own choice, make Rilla easy to invest in. It's her imperfections that will have you crying, screaming and laughing hysterically.

The narrative being solely the voice of Rilla makes the story of her journey build with anticipation. The one character narrative suits this story and adds more depth to both character and plot. While other important characters appear on her journey, we get to see them through the eyes of Rilla, learning about how she perceives them and how they impact her. This narrative also allows for the suspense to build nicely and the adventures to seamlessly flow together. Overall the perfect choice for this series.

"The Academy" alike "Cendrilla" may be based on the fairy tale of Cinderella, and apart from some basic elements, such as Rilla's step-family, the story is very different. Cordelia Castel's creative and imaginative writing breathes light into many fairy tale classics, cleverly blending them to make it seem that the stories are all happening at once. The length of this installment allows the story to be told with added description and attention to the finer details. The plot filled with magic and mayhem makes the fantasy of a new realm more appealing and a great fictional place to escape to.

With all elements combined, the "The Perrault Chronicles" is a series that will resonate with readers far beyond the final page.

Without any doubt, "The Academy" is another 5-star excellent read by Cordelia Castel. I recommend this book for readers of any age who love the magic of fairy tales and fantasy. To get the most out of the series, and to be truly captivated Rilla's journey, it is best to read the series in order. The cliff-hanging ending in "The Academy" paves the way for a third installment to the series. I can't wait to see where Cordelia Castel's imagination will next take me. I wait with anticipation to find out the next stage for Rilla, and if she will ever find her prince charming or her own happily ever after!

It's been a few years since I read the first book, so I've probably lost some details. Overall though it was pretty easy to pick this up and figure out what'd happened before. I'd also read the original first book so I'm sure things would've been slightly confusing anyway. But I recalled the key points quickly and off I went.

Heads up, I've been sick for about 5 days now and I not only read this while sick but I'm reviewing while still under the weather so any rambling, incoherent sentences, or other jibberish I'm going to blame on that.

I found myself still in just as must disgust over Bluebeard as I remember being for the first book. Now it's fine if he's a villain. He makes a great villain. He has slaves, he abuses people, kills his wives, and he's this nasty old(er) guy who is doggedly pursuing a teenager(kid) who doesn't want anything to do with him.

Most of what I managed to get through in The Academy was everyone (staff and nobles) treating Rilla poorly and the prince alternating between trying to get his stuff done and rescuing her. Bluebeard sneaks into the castle, traps Rilla in a room, and is super aggressive about her need to marry him. She flees but finds she's locked in but is fortunately rescued. She immediately goes to a breakfast that she doesn't even have time to finish before she's being summoned to a court hearing. One that everyone from witnesses, to judge, to prosecutor, to onlookers is all at! How the heck did a courtroom get assembled within probably 20 minutes of Bluebeard being kicked from the castle?

Since when the heck was it even possible for something to move that quick?

Anyway, norms aside how is it that not a single person thought something was off with this whole thing? Poor child that isn't attractive by local standards is paid for with a ridiculous bride price(instead of the standard dowry being received) and she is so ardently against being married to this old guy who's been married an amount of times I don't remember from the previous book that she RUNS AWAY and is standing in court declaring firmly she doesn't want this marriage.

Old rich guy could pick up another poor, homely girl and get paid to do so. He could pick up a rich, homely girl, or a rich beautiful one or a poor beautiful one. SOMETHING and not have to pay out the nose for it. He could pick any number of people who'd WANT to marry him because he's rich and titled.

Instead he's doggedly going after this teenager who DOES. NOT. WANT. HIM.

I would be going, there's something wrong with this picture. Why would you be determined to marry a kid that has less than zero interest in you who has no money or position to benefit you. Someone you clearly don't love because you don't even know them and your entire relationship has been you terrorizing and abusing her. Someone who isn't even good eye candy for you to trot around and make your peers jealous of.

There's clearly NO obvious reason for this man to pursue this, especially with the amount of fervor he's putting forward.

Now everyone else in the courtroom is clueless, but I'm seeing all this and it was maddening. I seriously am not sure how long I could've kept reading this series just based on something like this needs an answer before it seems like a gaping plot hole.

But what happened to make me stop is simpler than that. I read some names of the party guests and wondered if this series would be based entirely on "cinderella" or if there'd be books based on other fairytale characters in the same world.

So I flipped through the back cover blurbs of the rest of the series of 8 to find that all except the last one is about "cinderella". Which is fine. But I also realized that they string out some blinking love triangle UNTIL BOOK 7!!! SERIOUSLY!

#1 I hate love triangles. Since I'd say book 2 is setting up the start of that it's a safe bet I'd have to read 4-5 books of that crap. No thanks.

#2 Anytime a love triangle is dragged out over multiple books the rest of the plot gets lost in the complete focus of the readers and author on just that aspect. The more the readers fixate on that the more the author writes with that at the forefront because that's what everyone cares about.

#3 This love triangle is between Rilla, the prince, and . . . Bluebeard. Yep. The creepy AF half-ogre that's been a total sleezebag is a love interest worthy of dragging through numerous books as a love interest. SERIOUSLY? I don't do douchebag love interests. The whole "this is a misunderstood bad boy" thing is not my thing. The guy is a jerk. He's a creep. He's violent. As I shared about, there's a host of reasons he makes a good villain because he is a horrible, horrible person.

You can't validate his behavior(for me). So I'm certainly NOT going to spend anymore time on a series that's heading towards some major things I know don't go over well with me.

This is book two in what I hope will be a long series. The story starts where the first book ends. Cendrilla saved Crown Prince Armin from being kidnapped by trolls. The Prince decides to take Rilla back to his kingdom where she learns that because of her actions she will be required to enrolling at the Academy. The Academy a school to teach qualified, and a few unqualified, skills, to help to protect the kingdom from all enemies, including magical ones.

Rilla also learns that people accused of magical abilities will be immediately executed She is afraid of someone finding out about the blinding flash of light that came from her palms and helped defeat the kidnapping trolls. Lord Bluebeard observes the light but has kept quiet because he also has a secret, that he is half ogre.

Lord Bluebeard is still determined to wed Rilla. He files suit to have her returned to him so that they maybe wed. Because she has already enrolled in the Academy, the judge decided to let her continue her studies. However, if Rilla does not make it at the Academy and leaves before she turns 21, in 5 yrs since she is 17, then she will have to wed Lord Bluebeard.

The rest of the book deals with her studies at the Academy and all the interesting people she meets there. One person that thoroughly detests Rilla is Lady Florian, the woman she rescued, along with her two daughters, from Long Don Cipriano in the first book. Lady Florian is the Vice Chancellor at the Academy. To make the situation even more tenuous, Madame Florian's husband, Lord Floria, is the Lord High Steward and he is grateful that Rilla saved his family.

I highly recommend this book, along with the original book "Cendrilla." I received a free ebook copy to not only give an impartial and honest review but to make sure any and all corrections are made prior to it's publication.

The second entry of author Cordelia Castel’s Seven Kingdoms series opens with Rilla continuing to elude the man to whom she was promised marriage, Lord Orson Bluebeard, going to the city of Metropole to Prince Armin’s palace. Lord Bluebeard quickly has his fiancé put on trial for alleged violation of their contract, with Rilla escaping her arranged marriage due to conscription in the Anti-Magic Army and attendance of its Academy. However, she quickly learns that life at the Academy isn’t exactly ideal, for while she does make a few friends such as Millissa, others, chiefly princesses with whom she shares a dorm, disdain her.

Rilla also struggles academically, as she initially fails her Art of Assassination class for not presenting her thesis, due to an attempt against her life that led to her hospitalization in the school infirmary. Lord Bluebeard warns his fiancé about the pitfalls of the Academy, and another attempt at her life comes in the form of her stumbling into a subterranean dragon’s den in the middle of the woods. Events at a tavern also lead to Rilla’s arrest, although Lord Bluebeard promises to cover her fines if she goes to a royal ball with him, to which she agrees.

A hands-on combat exam will decide whether Rilla will stay at the academy or face expulsion, several twists culminating in the final chapters, accounting for a satisfying sequel that like its predecessor isn’t shy about its fairytale inspirations, with Millissa for instance having backstory alluding to the tale of Rumpelstiltskin. I could definitely relate with Rilla’s negative experience in school, given my own social hardships during my grade-school tenure. There are some occasional unclear details within the narrative, although I would definitely recommend this novella to those who enjoyed its precursor.

The Academy is the 2nd book in The Seven Kingdom series, but also fits into the Perrault Chronicles. Ms. Castel has created a fantastic series based on a plethora of Fairy Tales; however, her ingenuity has taken these tales beyond what might have been familiar and given them a new essence. The characters, for the most part, have more depth, more vitality, more Personality. Through bits and pieces provided, you will recognized several tales. However, in many cases, the names are different or partial. It adds a bit of extra enjoyment trying to figure these out.

In this instalment, Cendrilla (the main character whose back story is loosely based on Cinderella) has been sent to the Academy. Book 1 explains how She ended up a student there. Additionally, Castel has written a few novellas that take place just before The Academy begins. Although not required to understand the story, they provide an added level of understanding for a few of the chàracters. I was glad I had read the ones I did.

Join Cendrilla as she attends The Academy, furthers her friendship with Prince Armin, and tries to avoid a marriage with Bluebeard. She meets friends and foes at school while trying to figure out exactly who and what she is? Does the Academy provide her with safety or a danger? Grab the story and come join everyone in the Seven Kingdoms. 💎

“I am here to confirm that she saved my life and that I am indebted to her. In fact, we all are. She rescued me not knowing my true identity.” Prince Armin turned to the public gallery. “It could have been any of you. Such a brave and kind-hearted individual should be treated with respect.”

Cendrilla is on her way to the Academy to learn how to be part of the Anti Magic Army- and with Prince Armin’s help, hopefully not have to marry Bluebeard. However, the personalities and idiosyncrasies of her fellow classmates are enough to drive her away. If it wasn’t for Bluebeard, I believe she would have gone home and taken her chances with Mother and the twins.

She works harder than she thought she could, turning lemons into lemonade when things start piling up against her, mostly to her detriment. When at last she feels she might actually finish, the Universe seems to be really working against her. What will happen next?....

This series is so good, I can’t stand it when I finish a book, and can hardly wait for the next one. Highly recommended 5/5

Book Two of the adventures of Cindrilla. It starts right where the first book left off. Cindrilla has to enroll at the Acadamy because she proved herself a skillful fighter after she saved Prince Armin from the trolls. The Acadamy and its teachers reminds me of Hogwarts from Harry Potter.

As Rilla makes friends, she also makes enemies. She learns who to trust and not trust. Lord Bluebeard is still a main character who is always there determined to marry Rilla. Due to her enrollment at the Acadamy, she doesn't have to get married right away unless she fails at her classes.

Lady Florian still gives Rilla a hard time even though Rilla saved her and her daughters from Long Don Cipriano and his bandits.

In this book, we are introduced to all kinds of fairy tale characters, such as Pinnochio (Jacques). There is mention of a lump in Rillas bed at the beginning of the book (the princess and the pea), as well as ogres, trolls, witches, and magic beings.

This series is brilliant. Cordelia Castel does a fantastic job of intertwining fairy tales together to create a solid, plot-filled book. It was so put-together that I read it in about 8 hours. I've already started book 3.

Because of her brave deeds in saving others, Rilla has been conscripted into the army and must now join the Academy, a school that trains cadets to fight magic-using creatures. Although attending saves Rilla from fulfilling her contract with Lord Bluebeard, Rilla now has other enemies to worry about…and perhaps a new admirer?

In Castel’s The Academy, I love the friendships she creates between Rilla and her fellow cadets, Millissa and Dora. She also creates an interesting mystery around Madam Florian and Jacques, leaving you wondering what their pasts and motives are. Furthermore, I think the pacing on this story is much better than the first of the series.

Perhaps it is on account of my love for magic school-type books, but I would have loved to see more of Rilla’s Academy classes in this book. I do think, however, that the classes Castel did describe were essential to the main plot.

Overall, I loved this new addition to the Perrault Chronicles and look forward to reading more to find out what happens to Rilla next!

This second book in the Perault Chronicles series sees Cendrilla attending the Anti-Magic Army Academy. If she can stay here, passing her exams, and then in the Army until she reaches 21, she can then refuse to marry Lord Bluebeard as she will be of age and not still under the control of her "Mother", who sold her to the ogre. But with people determined to make her fail, including the Vice-Chancellor herself, will she even make it through her first term?
I enjoyed this book, which is well-written, full of action, adventure, and lots of great characters who drive the pace of the story, keeping you hooked from beginning to end. I couldn't put the book down and read it in one sitting, and cannot wait to read the next book. Highly recommended book and series!

Cordelia Castel has done it again. I fell in love with Rilla in the first one and this one continues where it left off. Not only does Rilla show incredible integrity but also such strength. Prince Armin is a truly kind man to her and he is just what she needs in the beginning to finish gathering her strength. There is a lot of action, adventure, and drama in the story. This is amazingly written and the flow is amazing. I loved how realistic and different this story of Cinderella is compared to the original story. This is a fantastic rendition and it is definitely worth reading. I voluntarily review an advanced reader copy of this book.

The Academy was even more action packed than the first book in the series, and continued to introduce more characters from other fairy tales into the world (Snow White and Rumpelstiltskin are the more obvious ones this time around). Rilla continues to try to find a way to avoid marrying Bluebeard, while not being possibly exposed as a possible magic user.

Again, the events were so fast paced I couldn't put the book down, and finished it within a couple of hours. I can't wait for the next one.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

I didn't read the first book but this one I received free for a honest review.
The characters were great and as a take off of the fairytales it had a good storyline. It had twists turns and even laughs while telling a different take of Cinderella...had lot's of action and a little romance. The only thing I didn't like was it has a cliffhanger ending! I don't like a cliffhanger! I like my stories to wrap up the story...then if the author wants to extend it fine.

Ok this one I liked a lot more. There was a lot more to this book. I like how Rilla stood up for herself, but how she also stood up for those around her. She cared about her friends as much as she cared for herself. This book was a lot more faced paced. There were a lot of people in this book and sometimes I had a hard time keeping them straight, but it was a page turner! I can't wait to keep reading.

Fantastic read

I am on a series binge here. I absolutely love this series and though I don't mean to speak ill of anyone but this particular book was all over the place. I found it quite difficult to stay in the now. I was confused as to who was who and what was what. I absolutely hate having to go back and re-read something because I didn't comprehend what I just read. This book was far too busy and way too bobbled. It went off in too many directions to keep up.

Just... same review as The Seven Kingdoms #1

But I am upping my rating for all the books to 2. I did have to acknowledge that Castel doesn't gloss over the ugliness of people and that physically ugly people can be the most beautiful. Full of tropes still? Yes. Still an an unending oh gods please just stop for more than a day? Yes. Am I picking up speed to near skimming and not missing literally anything? Also yes.

The continuing sage of Cendrilla, she is given a choice to either marry her betrothed, Bluebeard the infamous wife killer or join The Academy of Anti magic. If at anytime in her probationary period she fails in her duties and is dismissed she will be forced into a marriage that she believes will eventually result in her demise.
Cendrilla is inspiring, she does not have the tiny petite size most men look for in a wife, she is fiery, and acts before thinking, brave and a little reckless. I am so happy to see a diverse description of a princess character.
She meets a young man at the academy who claims to be Jack the Giant Killer, she knows for a fact he isn't so things are not looking up at her first day at school.
She has proven herself to be a brave warrior, but still no one likes her. No one but the Prince and a few ragamuffin servants.Being loved by servants is comforting but no help in this political world she is now thrust into. She knows one thing for sure, she has to stay in the Academy, marrying Bluebeard is an option she will not ever consider.
She is scorned by a teacher, who is so stuck up she might drown if it rained hard. She risked her life to save this woman and has got naught for it, but ridicule, and snobbery.
I love this fairy tale retelling, it's twist on the original is amazing.

More than schooling....

Being inconscripted into the Academy brings Cendrilla more than training to fight. Can she protect herself and her new friends from the Trolls?

Book 2 brings more danger and new friends for out heroine, plus finding more about herself. Bigger cliffhanger at the end and more mystery.

What an awesome second book.

This tale is a beautifully written fairy tale with a fabulous twist! The thought of having to marry an Ogre is not appealing for our leading lady. She'll do anything she can to avoid him and revealing her secret!!! A definite must read. Now on to #3 !!!

Life at the academy has it ups and downs for RIlla both friends and enemies are made and at times it's hard for her to distinguish which is which.to make matters worse even being in the confines of the academy doesn't discourage lord Bluebeard from his relentless pursuit of RIlla.all in all a interesting follow up to the magestaff.

The Academy

The second book in the series is even better than the first. I love the growth in Rilla. I'm not sure about the redemption of Blubeard, but I am intrigued to see what this character does next. Book three, here I come!

Received an ARC and I’m leaving a voluntary review. The Academy is the second book in the series. It’s a great continuation to the story. It keeps you guessing about what will happen next. A great enjoyable read.
