"When we limit opportunities to learn, we limit potential."
This book has been sitting on my shelf for months and I'm not sure why I waited so long to pick it up. Being in the field of education is a very difficult feat at times. Sometimes we are left feeling along in the adventure. Unmapped Potential has so many great ways to help us embrace the power of education and ways to make an impact to our staff and students. I loved every single page of this book. I now need a new pen for my annotations! :)
This book is a help to any educator wanting to examine his or her beliefs and actions in the classroom and identify ways to improve the things that seem to frustrate and hinder the outcomes one desires to see in the students being served and get the feeling of reaching those expectations identified in the personal search to become a more successful teacher. It is so helpful when one goes back to the book to review those areas that were problematic and to realize the improvement that is the result of the changes made.
I am going to come back often to this book during this next school year. My one change for next school year is to develop a stronger relationship with teachers at my OWN school. Many times, when the authors would say “students,” I substituted it for “teachers,” and it hit me hard. I have to let go of many beliefs I have and start anew with new outlooks. This was the right book for me at the right time in my career.
Dr. Julie Hasson and Missy Lennard do a great job by synthesizing all important aspects of dealing with children and students in K-12 in general. It can help educators and parents build better relationships with understanding children as a whole.
Exceptional for both admin (especially chap 9) and teachers! I will reread this each summer as part of my reflective practice — recalibrating as needed. The wisdom shared focuses on growth, not perfection, regardless of the number of years in education. The questions asked at the end of each chapter provide opportunity for immediate reflection and for ongoing, process-oriented evaluation.
GREAT book! I recommend this to anyone, not just those in education. Easy to follow ideas and format to help the reader transform into the best version of themselves. @burgessdave @PPrincipals #UnmappedED
