Firefly: Ice Born - Book One

Rate this book
This is the last edition published from ISBN 9781483503950

In the tiny alpine Village of Snow Valley, the dark forest holds many secrets, secrets of unsolved murders and shocking betrayals. Most residents of this quiet alpine town would dismiss the idea of witches in their midst, yet a battle centuries-old rages beneath the surface as immortal witch hunters stalk the local coven of emerging teen witches.
The hunted—a coven of teen witches just emerging into their full talents
The hunters—a family of immortal witch hunters assigned to assimilate, infiltrate, and eliminate the coven.
Teenage witch Emeranne Goode, or Ems, has a recurring dream in which she follows her beloved fireflies as they shimmer and dance toward the forest. She finds a boy, lying on the ground but sees only his gray eyes glowing a silvery sheen at night.
Witch hunter Bennett Bassett remembers nothing of his mortal life. Torn between his human values, buried deep within, and his heartless duties as a witch hunter, Bennett and his family hold the fate of the Snow Valley Coven in their hands.
Ems' and Bennett’s growing affection for one another is doomed from the start: she is the hunted and he is the hunter. Can they survive impossible odds and opposing forces, forces determined to keep them apart?
Firefly peels away the layers of secrets hidden within the sleepy little alpine valley to reveal the dark histories and solve the even darker mysteries that lie beneath the surface and pit the coven and their protectors against the witch hunters. Firefly is the first novel in The Secrets of Snow Valley trilogy.

I received a copy of the ARC from the Goodreads group Addicted to Y.A. in exchange for an honest review.

Having read and reviewed the first edition I did not think that Firefly required any revisions. A publisher acquired Firefly and under the guidance of an editor the author has revised the first edition. Those revisions have taken this unique and original story to another level.
The quality of writing and the author’s imagination remains strong.

In Firefly: Ice Born, the author has drawn upon history, classic literature, myths and legends to create a world of magic in a contemporary setting. The plot is fast-paced, unpredictable and spellbinding. The author continues to keep the reader guessing beyond the last chapter. The twists and turns are unexpected and the flow is seamless. The author has made high school events imaginative and they add so much to the plot—the football game, homecoming, and the Halloween fundraiser to name a few.

Readers will be drawn immediately into the world of teenage witch Emeranne Goode and the Snow Valley Coven via her point of view. This Coven comprises of her strong and supportive circle of friends with individual powers. Their voices are strong and distinct throughout the novel.

The introduction of the immortal witch hunter, Bennett Bassett adds depth to the story. His ‘family’ settles in Snow Valley with the task to “assimilate, infiltrate and eliminate” the Snow Valley Coven. Bennett refers to himself as a monster as he struggles with this duty. His point of view gives great insight into his powerful character. The transition form Emeranne’s point of view to Bennett’s POV is flawless reveling their true personality. The chemistry between Emeranne and Bennett is undeniable. Will their hearts be open to pure love? Their feelings defy all sensibility.

The book cover visually draws the reader into Snow Valley’s mystical world. The author has added so much to this read—Emeranne’s maps of the fictional alpine village of Snow Valley, Firefly: Ice Born character list, inspirational play list, witches, immortal witch hunters, and romantic poetry. Firefly: Ice Born does not present as a debut. Looking forward to the next instalment in the Secrets of Snow Valley series. Will the impossible come to life?

I found Firefly on Kobo's Teen Page. Kobo choose Firefly as a 2014 Teen Hidden Gem.
I read the summary and decided to buy the ebook and I'm glad that I did.
Even though Tessa is a teenage witch, she is a relateable character and so are her friends. Her friends are part of the Snow Valley Coven and they all have paranormal powers. Tessa is a loyal friend.
The author has created strong character. They are truly all unique.
I was very impressed with the setting and history of Snow Valley High. It reminded me of high school except mine didn't have witches! LOL!
I'm also a huge Seattle Seahawks fan. I loved that the author had a homecoming football game. I could picture the game and it was a page turner.
I found the author drew me into the story and I could not stop reading. I had to find out more about Tessa and William. William is a conflicted character. He is a witch hunter but he doesn't want to be a monster. That is how he sees himself. William is sooooooo romanitic!
I know that this is the first book in a trilogy so there is a lot more to come and the author left me ready for more.
I highly recommend Firefly and I gave it five stars out of five. If you love YA paranormal, you will love Firefly.

I want to thank the author for sending me a digital copy of this book for free

This book follows two main characters, Emeranne and Bennette. Ems is a witch, after witnessing a brutal murder she gets followed by a reporter called "Coop the Scoop", so she has to leave town for the summer. Ben is an immortal witch hunter who´s second-guessing his life and why he and his family have to kill witches and their Coven.
After the brutal murder of Mrs. Kerr the Coven is looking for answers, who did it? Why? And why didn´t they get warned with the Ice Vision? Not even the Den Born got any warning of the murder. So they decide to consult the spirits after Ems is home again. They find out who did it but with a warning: “Beware,” the faces warned in unison, “for one of your Coven shall be next.”

I love how P.M. wrote her descriptions; “Vivid layers of sun-kissed brown, golden sunflower and bonfire red dyed the crisp early light.” so beautifully written! I wish I could go to Snow Valley and go to Roars Hack Falls and look at the scenery, which I don´t even know if it is a real place or not.

For being the author´s first book this was great. The characters and the story really grew on me. While reading the end I was crying because I felt so much love (and unfairness) toward Emeranne and Bennette, especially Ben. How he saw himself as a monster was heart breaking. I understand his point of view, but still. All I wanted was to give him a hug, I still do.

“The heart’s shadow remembers.”

I think it was a really nice touch with the map and the little facts of all the people in Snow Valley. Snow Valleys Coven The Ice Born and The Den Born, The Fire Born etc. Which you can find in the beginning of the book. And I like the friendship between Emeranne and her friends. They were always there to help one another.

There were some funny moments too, my favorite:
“Dopey’s shoes look like giant potatoes. If I get hungry I
can bake them in tin foil.”

The only thing I didn´t like or pay much attention to was the part at the football game which they meddled with a little. That was mostly because I´m not that into sports and thought that it was a little unnecessary or mostly confusing, but I guess it was to show what they could do with their magic, which I have to say was pretty awesome.

For seven years Ems has been haunted by a dream of a boy with grey ashen eyes. For centuries Ben has been sketching a girl with black hair and no face, his one true love, who he´s been looking for ever since he met with the straga many years ago. Will they be able to know who they are before it´s too late? Find out by picking this book up!

That cliffhanger at the end was so not fair! But I can´t wait for book two to be released. Need to know what happens!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review (Lovers of Paranormal). Most of the residents in the tiny alpine town of Snow Valley have no idea that witches live amongst them. There are Ice Born, Den Born, and Fire Born. Trusting their Ice Visions, the coven is devastated when a tragedy occurs with no warning. This book was more YA than I'm into, but it was undeniably a good story. I will read the next one because it was a good story that left me hanging.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal)

I really enjoyed this book. I went in hoping that it would be a book that would grab me. I have been reading books between my reviews that are so hard to get into and some I have just not been able to finish. I was glad this one started with a bang and kept me engaged. You start off with a little snow and magic and goes on from there. What more could you ask for from a book? They are always good when you start out with something so exciting.

As I kept reading I started to love some of the characters. Of course you have a great strong female lead, but sometimes she kind of irritated me. She second guessed herself at times. But the other characters made up for her lacking confidence at times. I especially loved Ben. I love how he interacts with Emeranna. I think that their relationship is being set up be a great one in future books.

I think the only thing that kept me from giving this a full five stars was that it ended so harshly and some areas seemed forced or rushed. I think that it could have been stretched out some to make the story flow better, but over all this book was an excellent book and I am so looking forward to the next books in the series!

Pros: Strong characters and a strong story line

Cons: The ending left me a little off. I think that some areas felt rushed or were not fleshed out enough.

Over all rating: I would definitely recommend this book to others!

Solid 4! I liked the story a lot! Sometimes I got confused on when something was a Dream, Vision, or just real life. At the end, I don't really know what happened (is this a vision or is this really happening?). I liked the characters, though, and all the really unique metaphors that are in the book! Really cool. Full review to come on my blog! :)

I received an Advanced Review Copy of Ice Born: Firefly Book One, by P.M. Pevato through the Lovers of Paranormal group on Goodreads, in exchange for an honest review.

4.5 stars!!

Set in the small community of Snow Valley, Firefly is the story of a close knit group of teens coping with the aftermath of the tragic death of their friend’s mother. The suspicious fire at the lookout, which took the life of Leland Kerr’s mother Charlsie, has rocked the entire community, awakening memories of a similar tragedy decades earlier. People want answers and reassurances, but a creepy and aggressive reporter is lurking about spreading rumours and accusations. Coop “the Scoop” Kozalski is determined to uncover the “truth”. And is there some greater truth to be uncovered in Snow Valley? You bet, it is a hot bed of secrecy.

At the centre of Kozalski’s attention is Emeranne Goode. Part of the Snow Valley Coven, Ems and her friends (both male and female) are just coming into their powers. The daughter of the Senior Forest Ranger, Ems has a love of the outdoors and just happened to be riding her bike near the lookout the day of the fire. She tried to save Charlsie, but was unsuccessful. Interestingly, this young Coven has influential parents – the Police Chief, Fire Chief and Forest Ranger. These higher officials try to shelter Ems and keep her presence at the scene of the crime quiet, especially given that her mother was present at a similar tragedy decades earlier. Kozalski somehow catches wind that Emeranne was there and ruthlessly follows her, blackening her name and harassing her at every turn. The Coven is certain that witch hunters are behind the murder and evil is afoot. They try to channel their emerging powers to find answers, protect one another, while at the same time attempt to lead typical teenaged lives, learning who they are, and possibly first love. Ems’ relationship with Bennett Bassett is a large part of the storyline.

The author has taken great care in crafting the Snow Valley community, including an index of the characters and their relation to one another and the community, as well as a greater world which includes not only the Ice Born coven, but the Den Born group of Native Americans with their rich folklore, and the sinister Fire Born witch hunters, with a dark history that goes back centuries. All three of these groups are present in Snow Valley, although the Ice Born and Den Born are not aware of the witch hunters at first. The young coven has inherited its gifts from their parents, whose powers apparently decline as the next generation is strengthening.

I enjoyed the story very much, captured by the gorgeous imagery. At all times I felt immersed in the story. I was riding a mountain bike at top speed through an autumnal forest along with Emeranne. I traipsed through a mysterious nighttime woods following fireflies to discover the body of sleeping boy in Emeranne’s “dream.” I sat around a camp fire toasting marshmallows and singing camp songs with the Coven and their Den Born friends. I sat with Ems and friends in a shimmering swirl of dust motes as she uncovered her absent mother’s hidden books. Even scenes at the community football field and the Halloween event at the high school, while meant to show that the teens still led normal fun loving lives, still had a greater purpose and offered some plot advancement, even if just to include Ben in the Coven’s activities. The descriptions are breathtaking and added richness to the story. Even now I feel like I could stroll through the community and find my way up crisp, snowy mountain roads to Ems’ log home with her mountain dogs standing guard. I loved the way the author switched points of views so we could get a glimpse into Bennett’s bizarre history and his burgeoning awareness of Ems and the role he plays in her life. Multiple techniques are used in the novel to layer past, present, dreamscapes, flashbacks, and hint at the coming danger. Action and description are laced together so well that at times I felt dizzy, rushing, heart beat increasing. Fantastic! Beautiful, artistic and poetic are only a few words to describe the writing.

My only criticism of the book, is that I wanted more. I wanted to know more about the young coven, how they came to be such great friends. Were they thrust together by their parents to continue the coven and just happened to become friends as a result? What is the purpose of the Coven in the first place? Since they seem to come from all walks of life and interests, was it the fact that they were Ice Born (whatever exactly that means) that brought them to this specific community? Why did the previous generation’s abilities wane? Why were the witch hunters intent on destroying the coming generation and not the older Coven? What did Violet’s murder decades ago achieve? Why weren’t there more attacks during that generation? A few details about Ems telekinetic powers as a child are mentioned, for instance, the snowstorm and the texts books in the garage, but not a real reason why the principal dislikes her so much, why she is seen as a troublemaker. There were opportunities in the story, for instance, the summer Ems spends with her Den Born cousins in which her emerging skills could have been displayed, more about the Deb Born offered. Clearly these kids did not just wake up one morning able to cast a circle, call up violet storms and mentally communicate with one another. The inclusion of these details would have improved the story significantly and provided fodder for why the witch hunters were targeting this Coven, why this very creepy reporter is suddenly in town, why most members of the Bassetts are now questioning their life mission. By the way … fantastically original idea of the immortal witch hunters! I just want to know more!!

I realize that this is only book one and ends on a cliff hanger, so I am expecting that all my questions and hunger for more will be sated in the coming editions.

I received this free from the author in exchange for an honest review

Actual Rating - 4.5

Emeranne Goode is a part of a coven of witches in Snow Valley. One day, when Ems is in the forest, she stumbles upon a brutal murder of a witch. There is a new danger for the coven of teen witches, and all eyes are on Ems. Ems also dreams of a forest full of fireflies and a boy on the ground. Bennett Bassett is an immortal witch hunter, but he is conflicted between his humanity and his duty. While Ems and Bennett become closer, secrets are revealed and lives are put in danger.

Around a year ago I read Firefly by the same author - you can read my review here. P.M. Pevato took into account her readers views and constructive criticism and went back and revised her novel. There has been a lot of improvement and it is very noticeable that she listened to her readers. I rated Firefly 3.5 stars, so you can tell I enjoyed the revised version more. In my other review I mentioned that the second half lost it's mojo a little bit, which is why it let me down a bit. However, Firefly: Ice Born definitely had more tension and suspense in the second half and did hold my interest for longer.

The writing was much more improved. I felt like it flowed more and it made the story feel more magical. I particularly liked the dream scenes, they were definitely my favourite aspect of this novel. The plot itself did keep me turning pages and it was quite riveting. The effort that the author put in to create this magical world is obvious and it paid off because the world building is pretty good. The cliffhanger was pretty good as well, and really does leaves you wanting the next one.

Now on to the characters. Firefly: Ice Born is told in two different point of views, Ems and Bennett. Personally, while I really liked Ems, Bennett was a favourite of mine, which is a change from the first draft and I felt like his creepiness went down a lot. I thought he was a really well developed character and I was really interested in his past, and how he disliked what he was and how his humanity got in the way. I also really liked Ems as I felt like she was strong, independent and driven but just so normal - minus the witch part. She was just an average girl for the most part. She hung around with her friends, ate pizza and cake and I really loved that. I think that is why I really liked the relationship with her friends. They were all so supportive of each other.

The romance was much improved in this version. It was more developed, less forced, and it wasn't really at the forefront. The main story took the main focus of the story.

Overall, a much improved version. A must read if you enjoy paranormal romance.

In Snow Valley, lives a coven of witches. Emeranne discovered her powers years ago, when she saved her mother and herself from a car accident. Not knowing how to control her abilities, she often causes trouble. On her way to school, she discovers a witch burned at a stake in the forest. It causes a huge incident in her small town, as the same crime happened two decades ago without being solved, and she soon has to go away for the summer to her cousins’ house. Two months later, the incident still hasn’t died out and a creepy journalist is spreading lies about her and kind of stalking her. Unfortunately, she has to return home, and, with the help of her other witch's friends, find the criminal who committed the crime. And don’t forget Bennett Bassett, the boy who looks really similar to the person she dreams of every night, but could be the enemy.

This book is told in two points of views. There is Emeranne Goode, an Ice Born witch, who is telekinetic. The second point of view is a Fire Born and an Immortal Witch Hunter, Bennett Bassett.

The story was not what I thought it would be, in a good way. I was pleasantly surprised at the twists and turns in the book. It was really interesting and I liked how the author added parts of Macbeth in the story, such as the magic spells. I also think that Emeranne and Bennett are a cute couple.

I had a little difficulty to differentiate the two points of views throughout the book. Also, there is a big set of characters that I couldn’t recognize at first, and it was confusing, but it was easier as I went on with the book. The description of the characters at the beginning also helped. I also had difficulty connecting with the characters, because we don’t know much about them except for Ems and Ben, but I still really liked the writing style. The unconventional formatting made it stand out and the writing was more powerful.

I definitely want to read the next books in the series. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good, quick read, witch story.

I read this book a couple of times, in its rougher iterations, and am very impressed with the changes Ms. Pevato made. She listened to the suggestions her readers made, took the ones that were helpful, and discarded the ones that weren't, and ended up with a well crafted book.

The story flowed from the snowy beginning through to the end. It was logical, as logical as teen witches and generations old witch hunters can be, and the ending left me wanting more. Fortunately, she has two more novels planned, and with any kind of luck will get Book Two finished, polished, and published before I forget Book One ;-) .

Pay attention to the chapter headings, as the POV shifts between the protagonist and the antagonist. Although it's usually easy to spot within the first paragraph, it's nice to have that heads up.

The characters are well developed, and the world in which they live, play, and work is equally well developed and believable. The imagery is beautiful, and I found myself wanting a blanket as I read. (It takes place in an alpine village in the winter, and I was cold.) I truly cared about some of the characters, and others, well—I wasn't supposed to like them.

One of the joys of Young Adult/Teen fiction is there is no gratuitous sex or violence, and for that reason, many adults take great delight in reading books written for younger folk. I truly hope adults wanting a good story will pick this book up and read it. And for the teens out there looking for a good paranormal not filled with horny werewolves and vampires, this is the one for you!

A unique story, and a fun read. Thank you, P. M. Pevato for writing this. And, please, hurry up with Book Two.

I received a copy of the ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I read the first edition of Firefly and really enjoyed it. When I started reading Firefly: Ice Born I thought how could it be any better than the first edition. Well, it is! I loved it!

Emeranne and Bennett are such interesting characters. You get to know and really like these characters as they share their lives through their point of view. I like the way it moves from Emeranne’s to Bennett’s point of view. Ems is a witch and Bennett is a hot witch hunter. I think that the story line is original. And Bennett’s poetry is perfect like him. I could not put the book down until I finished the last sentence. The story moves quickly as you get to know these two.
Ems friends are a tight knit group. They really support each other. I like it that Ems has good friends. Her friends are both ice born and den born. The ice born friends are witches and the den born have protected generations of the Snow Valley Coven. This is all explained at the beginning of the book with a handy character list. Another interesting character is Coop the Scoop. Even though he can be annoying to Ems, he adds a lot to the story.

I enjoyed the playlist at the end of the book. I had many of the songs but added some to my collection. It is interesting how music can inspire a writer. I happy that the author kept the maps from the first edition. The author has a very good imagination.

I give this book five stars and two thumbs up. I can’t wait to read the next book in the Firefly series.

I had the immense privilege of reading an earlier draft of this novel about a year ago, and I absolutely love every change P.M. Pevato made to her mysterious fantasy story. It actually is one of the first books I've read centered around witches, and I loved the world that was created in the small town of Snow Valley. The story begins immediately with Emeranne finding a witch that was recently killed by Fire Borns, setting the entire plot of the slow burning novel which eventually becomes action packed.

Something I liked about the book was how closely knit the Snow Valley Coven was. They all served a purpose in the problems they faced and all supported one another through various situations, and I loved the friendship they had. The only thing that confused me a bit was the names of the members of the coven that I sometimes mixed up. But thankfully this book had a character index that guided me through the story whenever I became confused.

Another thing I enjoyed was the fact that Emeranne and Bennett's relationship wasn't that rushed. They got to know each other over time and the reader was able to read poems in Bennett's point of view which showed how much he cared for Emeranne who he was hesitant to speak to because of his profession. This story is a quick easy read that ends on with a bang that left me wanting more. Mysteries are solved but questions are left open for the series to progress into the second novel I am eager to read.

I went into reading this book with no expectations, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

The start of the story pulled me right in. It starts of when Em's the main character discovers her powers and then it fast forwards in time to where she is a teenager and witnesses a murder. I really like the main characters, the setting, the world building - it all feels pretty solid to me.

I would definitely recommend this book to any YA fantasy fan :)

Original review on: http://unquenchablereads.wordpress.co...

Tessa lives in a not so normal town. She lives a normal life, well other than her being a witch. She has a witch coven that all we friends are in too. It's been quiet for years. No killings or witch hunters. But now that something has gone wrong, who can Tessa trust?

Rating: 4.5 stars

I debated for a while between 5 and 4.5 stars. I finally decided on 4.5 stars. There were a few spelling errors, but I think she was trying to get the way they spoke across. The main character, Tessa, was awesome. I liked how she stayed by her friends. William was interesting. I loved how P.M. Pevato included the Phantom of the Opera. I felt bad for William for part of the book. Her friends were great. I loved how they stuck up for her. The ending of this book was what I disliked the most. It made me just...... I can't tell you. It's a spoiler. Anyway, this was a great witch book and I recommend it to anyone who likes to read about witches.

Book Review

Genre: YA Paranormal

Firefly is the debut novel and the first in The Firefly Trilogy, described by the author as “the bittersweet love story between a teenage witch and an immortal witch hunter.”

In Firefly, the author has drawn upon history, classic literature, myths and legends to create a world of magic in a contemporary setting. At the same time, the author constructs a plot that avoids the predictability of using Salem as a backdrop. Instead the plot is unpredictable and riveting. The author continues to keep the reader guessing beyond the last chapter. The author paces the plot with a deft touch.

The story opens with the recent murder of Charlsie Kerr, a seasoned witch and mother to teenager and Coven member Leland Kerr. The mystery of this murder continues throughout the novel.

Fans of YA paranormal will be drawn immediately into the world of teenage witch Tessa Goode and the Snow Valley Coven. This Coven comprises of male and female high school students with individual powers. Throughout the novel, the author develops each character, imbuing unique traits, habits and voice.

The introduction of immortal witch hunter William Bassett adds emotional depth to the story, through his romantic poetry and detailed sketches. For centuries, his poetry was written for and his sketches were drawn of a girl he’d never met. That is, until his family settles in Snow Valley with the task to “assimilate, infiltrate and eliminate” the Snow Valley Coven. William struggles with this task, referring to himself as a monster, with clever references to Frankenstein’s monster and The Phantom of the Opera, images further underscoring William’s self-loathing.

And yet, he is drawn to Tessa, despite knowing she is a witch and he is a witch hunter. Protective of Tessa, he is mortified during a high school Hallowe’en fundraiser, when Tessa is dunked in a tank to raise money for charity. This event cleverly makes reference to the historical technique of using a ducking stool for witches undergoing judgment. A witch was tied to a wooden stool at the end of a long paddle, and repetitively dipped into a lake or pond by villagers in the course of her mock trial. Just as these villagers taunted the witch, so too does the crowd taunt Tessa during Hallowe’en.

A stunning book cover. Maps of the fictional alpine village of Snow Valley. Witches. Immortal witch hunters. The author’s crisp, efficient writing style flowing effortlessly. Romantic poetry. Together, Firefly makes for a captivating read, one that does not present as a debut. Rather, it introduces a fresh voice to the YA paranormal genre, a voice indistinguishable from a seasoned writer.

In short, Firefly will leave the reader wanting more.

The author contacted me and provided me with a copy of the book for a review.

This book varies between a 3.5 and a 4 star rating, depending on what part of the book I am on.

This book followed a girl named Tessa, who was a part of a witch coven in the town of Snow Valley. It also followed a boy named William, who is an immortal witch hunter. The story revolves around them, their relationship and the death of a witch in the coven as well as the threat that comes along with the death.

The plot was definitely really interesting. I don't read many series about witches so it was nice to finally read one and see what authors come up with for their storyline, and what Pevato did was really great! It was also interesting to see male witches. I truly didn't expect the end and that's a big surprise to me because I figured I would have seen it coming.

The writing in this book was good. The imagery was great and it was so descriptive. My only problem with the writing was the character interaction felt a little rushed at times. Conversations escalated quickly and they were hard to follow at times because characters would go from talking to fighting before I could realize that anyone was angry.
The characters themselves were well written. I liked the main character, she was sensible and well rounded and didn't anger me or do anything that usually upsets me. However, William really bothered me. He was too... much. He was obsessive in a way that wasn't what I usually see in books. It was almost creepy the way he talked about Tessa, and not in a good way. I feel like if there had been a more appropriate progression to his feelings towards her, that would have been better, or maybe had made me enjoy him more. I'm not sure how I felt about him towards the end, considering I don't know whether to REALLY trust him anymore or not.
Their relationship was a bit weird to me too. I liked it, but I don't really feel like there was enough build up. They went from strangers to dating with no in between period. But again it's hard because I think it might just be William I had a problem with. I really did like Tessa.
I mean overall I really liked this book! There were some weird time jumps that made it hard to follow, but I am glad I read it!
I would recommend it to other people, especially since witch books are rare.

When I bought the ebook I was drawn to the cover. It looked awesome. And the summary sounded so cool. I love to read about witches.
Tessa is a young witch with a special sight. She is so cool because she has great friends and lives a pretty normal kind of life until she meets William. I am so in love with William. He is a witch hunter. How different is that. I'm so sick of werewolves, vampires and zombies. Once I started reading I couldn't turn by iPad off.
Where do I begin? I'm not going to spoil it for you but let me just say that these two really are meant to be together. William has known that he loves Tessa. He has known for many centuries. Not a spoiler alert.
Tessa isn't the kind of friend that dumps them when she has a boyfriend. She has great friends. And they are witches. Teen boys and girls. All of her friends have different powers.
Another thing I would like to mention is Tessa has been bullied. For anyone who has experience being bullied you will feel for her. She is strong and her friends are there for her, always.
William writes poetry. Can you imagine! He writes it for Tessa.
The maps are cool too. You really get to understand where Tessa and William live.
What's neat too is that the chapters switch back and forth between Tessa voice and Williams too. I always knew what each character was feeling.
Wait till you read the ending. I cant wait for the next two books to find out what happens to Tessa and William.
Do I recommend this book? Yes, yes, yes!!! I I could give it ten stars I would!!!!! :-)

I RECEIVED A COPY OF THE EBOOK ICE BORN: BOOK ONE, FIREFLY, IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW FOR THE GROUP WE HEART YA! BOOKS.

A solid 4.5!

I love the idea of witches. I mean, who wouldn't want to hex the idiot whose texting while weaving in and out of traffic? Or the ex who dumped you for someone with bigger boobs? And I've read a lot of witchy fiction and was curious to see Pevato's take on the theme. I was pleasantly surprised. The story follows the awakening of a normal girl turned witch, and a witch-hunter with a conscience. Pevato weaves a storyline that has everything a reader like me enjoys: forbidden romance, supernatural elements, coming-of-age, and mystery. Her writing voice is amazing and her descriptions are beautiful. I would definitely continue reading the series.

Read the first edition. So I asked the author for the ARC. Really liked it a lot. Glad the football game was still part of the story. The story still has witches and witch hunters and lots of magic. Bennett the witch hunter is even cooler than before. And Emeranne still has lots of good friends that make the story really interesting. Bryon is great. He is a running back. Go buy this book when it's for sale.

3.5 stars- almost 4.

I RECEIVED A COPY OF THE EBOOK ICE BORN: BOOK ONE, FIREFLY, IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW FOR THE GROUP WE HEART YA! BOOKS

I have to say I really like the idea of this book. Anything fantasy is usually in my wheelhouse so I definitely wanted to give it a shot. And I think one of my favorite things is the concept behind this book and the fact that Ems has a backbone (most of the time), Both of these things can be lacking in the YA genre as of late.

The idea of the immortal witch hunters was definitely intriguing and the detail in their history was very impressive. But, I wish we had more development/backstory for them. I had the same problem with the coven. I wanted more background, more development of the characters, friendships, relationships to get more invested in the characters. I wanted to know more about Selene and River. I wanted to see the push and pull between Ben and Ems before their sudden giving in to their attraction. But in the defense of the coven characters the research into Wicca and witchcraft was very spot on. I especially like the reference to the Salem witch trials through Ems's last name- I caught the irony and love it.

This series has great potential I just want more development of the characters and their backstories. I want to see the development happening in the story so I can appreciate and become wicked invested in the characters. The story as it is right now is honestly a bit to Twilight-esque for my tastes. Ems has a backbone and can hold her own, but sometimes she doesn't and for me it didn't make sense some of the jumping between Ems a strong, kick ass witch to a Bella-like wimpy persona.

I will want to give the next book a shot just to see what happens, especially with the cliff hanger ending! I kept looking to see the next page, but it wasn't there!!!

Overall rating: 3.5 stars out of 5. I am holding out hope for the next books to show more background of the characters and let me become more invested to see what happens with Ben and Ems. Not to mention Miranda! Spoiler: watch out for that one!

***I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review from the goodreads group Lovers of Paranormal, or LOP.***

This is an interesting story about a group of teen witches coming into their powers in the midst of a tragedy and personal danger. The book begins with a three page list of about twenty characters and describes each one's powers, friendships, relationships, employers, family histories, etc. I skimmed this section eager to start reading the book. This was a mistake. You kind of need to memorize this to completely follow the story. I kept getting confused over who was who, and which group they belonged to. I read this on my tablet and was just not willing to keep navigating to the front of the book to look everyone up. There were some characters who I thought would play a larger role, but they just kind of disappeared by the end. I'm wondering if this book was setting them up for more prominent roles in the rest of the series. I didn't fully grasp the whole den born vs ice born vs fire born thing. I would love to know more backstory on that. The ending of the book was crazy, and I thought Ems was a major badass. I would be interested in rereading the final product of this book, as well as the rest of the series.

I loved this book so much! It took me about 60 pages to get into it but once I got into it I loved it! By the end I could not put this book down I had to have the ending (although since it's a series it still ended with a cliffhanger) I loved the characters Emeranne and Bennett, and there were so many plot twists in this book! I don't usually read books about witches and witch hunters but I loved the story and the plot twists kept me engrossed in this book. I also loved Bennett's poems interspersed throughout the book, they were so lovely. I'm so glad I received this book from the giveaway OwlCrate hosted and I'm so happy for discovering P.M. Pevato's work! I'm definitely pumped to read books 2 & 3 when they are published!

If you have following my reviews for a while, you’ll have discovered that I’m not a fantasy fan. My bookshelves on Goodreads only really have the True Blood books on it (LOVED those btw – maybe a review is in order when the new season starts), and I recently finished Under The Skin (review [here](http://emmaswritingthoughts.tumblr.co...)) due to my Scarlett obsession – but that’s about it.

However, I hope you also noticed that I like to review each book in its own genre and for its own worth. There is no point looking at a book like The Fault In Our Stars in the same way as Under The Skin. So when I was contacted by P.M. Pevato to review her book Firefly, I jumped at the chance. I love reading books that I normally wouldn’t pick up and I love the passion she had for her own story.

Firefly is about Tessa, or Bugs as her friends call her, and her witch coven. There are weird things happening in their small town and the witches have to figure out what is going on. The reader switches between Tessa’s point of view and that of William – a witch hunter. I don’t want to give any big plot points away, but I think about 80% of you can guess where this is going.

I appreciate fantasy for the creativity of the author and this book is proof of this creativity. I could never think of a whole structure of a witch coven and how they interact. However, besides the creativity, the book didn’t do too much for me.

The characters remained rather flat and I felt like I didn’t get enough insight information about Tessa and William. The book was very action-focused and I would have loved some more inner dialogue from the main characters. I have heard this book is the first in a series, so maybe there will be more character depth in the second book, but for now… It just wasn’t enough to get me really involved with any of the characters.
This was further enhanced by the many short sentences in the book. There just wasn’t enough description and when there was, the short sentences made it feel rushed – like the reader doesn’t have the time to really take it in. But I guess this is a very personal preference of mine for medium to long sentences.

The ending left me slightly confused, but I guess that’s fair enough since it will urge people to want the second book of the series.

It was a decent read and I think that if you are into fantasy, this might be your quick-to-read beach book that leaves satisfied, but not completely blown away.

I received this free from the author in exchange for an honest review

I don't make a sound. I don't flinch. I wander quietly, quietly, deeper into the dark forest, guided by the pure light of a full moon and the sparkly glow of lantern bugs

Actual Rating - 3.5 stars

Tessa Goode is a witch and part of the Snow Valley Coven. She is gifted with the Sight, but the sight failed her when it came to a murder of a member of the older coven. Tessa also dreams about a boy, in a dark forest. She sees only his grey eyes and his silver veins. William is an immortal witch hunter. He sketches the face of a girl he doesn't know. Until he goes to Snow Valley.

The first half of the story seemed really promising. But the second half lost its mojo and let me down a little bit. I still did enjoy it but if the second half held my attention the same as the first I probably would have rated this about 4.5.

I will start with the characters. I liked Tessa, but I felt when it came to William she got blubbery and weepy real fast. When she found out who William was she reacted how I would expect some one to react which was good. She wasn't one of those girls who believed his every word straight away, she actually ran like hell and tried to crush him with trees. William was an ok character for me. He was a little creepy with the stalking, (she also seemed freaked out by that so that's a plus), but other than that he was just an average character for me. Their relationship was also just average, I didn't feel much of the chemistry, so it felt a little flat to me. I would have really loved for some more internal dialogue so I could have maybe connected with the characters a bit more easily. I really did love all her friends - Morgan etc. They all held their own personalities and weren't just cardboard cut-outs so that was a positive.

The story itself was quite riveting and it really did keep me interested and turning the pages. I was a little confused at the end, . I felt the villains were not very complex and a bit predictable with the shut up you stupid little witch comments - but then again they didn't have much motivation apart from the fact that they were witch hunters, so I guess it was not really needed for the story.

Overall, it was a pretty good read, fairly short, so if you are looking for a good YA paranormal romance then I do highly suggest that you check this one out.
