‘I think that I am Shreenath…. I still think so… From within we are one and the same. Sometimes he wores the mask with my name while at others I do so to fool people.’ A jeep passed by speedily and very closely. It would have brushed up. ‘They are out to kill us!’ the terror in Shreenath’s voice was unmistakable. ‘They are out to kill us! Is this some kind of game that destiny is playing with us? It wants to kill us together; both the original and the duplicate, along with their fiancées.’ Once again the jeep passed by. It symbolized a kite swooping down from high skies upon its prey. As it misses the prey it goes back to get into action. What is going to happen now? We three are set upon the journey. Where? No one knows. How long? No one knows. We are mere puppets in the hands of destiny. Ten breathtaking stories! Each one creating doubt beyond imagination while piling up the tension. Ten stories that would really create doubt! Shaded with games played by human minds these stories take us to immeasurable height and fathomless depth at the same time. Matkari has once again proved that his stories are not just entertaining or pleasing. They take us beyond that where it is impossible to comprehend. They are terribly frightful. They are mysterious. These ten stories once again prove his command over words and themes and excellent manifestation of novel ideas. They underline his authority in writing such dubious stories.

About the author

Matkari's first work, the one-act play Wedi Manase,was presented in 1955 on All India Radio in Mumbai.His play Pahuni was presented the next year at another venue.

Matkari worked as a columnist for newspapers and magazines in the 1970s. He wrote the column Soneri Savalya n Apale Mahanagar for four years.

Matkari's 98 works thus far include 33 plays, 8 collections of his one-act plays, 18 books of his short stories, 3 novels, a book of poems for children, and 14 plays and three collections of plays for children.His works include Gudha Katha --mysteries—for adults which maintain realism.Matkari wrote a few plays in Indian languages other than Marathi.Many of Matkari's novellas have been adapted for the stage.

14th Ratnakar Matkari book that I completed!
The problem is I was introduced to Mr. Matkari after reading "खेकडा" & then "मध्यरात्रिचे पड़घम" & because of that, every book I read afterwards, I started comparing them to these inadvertently.
Not that this book sucks, I loved few of the stories- "संदेह", "ते सुखाने मेले!" & "अपुरी कहाणी". Just that it felt short if I have to compare it with खेकडा.

समोर जेवणाचं ताट. आणि त्याच्या शेजारी मतकरींचं हे पुस्तक. एकाचवेळी पोट आणि बुद्धीला खाद्य मिळण्याचा रुचकर असा बेत. मतकरींच्या गूढ कथांचं वैशिष्ट्य हे कि, कधी कधी एकदम शेवटच्या ओळीला जाऊन ते सस्पेन्स उलगडतात. तोवर आपण त्यात खेचले जात असतो. त्यातल्या पात्रांसोबत आपल्याला आपुलकी, प्रेम, राग आणि कीव सुद्धा येत राहते. जेवणाचा घास तोंडाशी नेत असताना, त्या कथेतून असं काही समोर येतं, कि आपण थक्क झाल्याशिवाय राहत नाही.

संदेह हा एक कथासंग्रह असून यातील प्रत्येक कथेत गुढ ,रहस्यमय असे काहीतरी दडलंय! जवळपास सर्वच कथांचा शेवट मला थक्क करून टाकणारा असा होता...
अनपेक्षित शेवट असल्यामुळेच मला हा कथासंग्रह आवडला. संदेह हे या कथांमधील एका कथेचे नाव आहे ,याबरोबरच प्रत्येक कथेत वाचकाच्या मनात संदेह निर्माण होतो म्हणून कदाचित याचे नाव रत्नाकर मतकरी यांनी असे ठेवले असावे!
यातील सर्वाधिक मला आवडलेल्या कथा म्हणजे-

अप्रतिम लेखन, प्रत्येक गोष्टीचा शेवट अगदी अनपेक्षित आणि थरारक आहे, वाचताना मजा येते

रत्नाकर मतकरी नाव ऐकलं, की आठवतं त्यांनी रचवलेले नाटक, सोबतच त्यांनी लिहिलेल्या गुढकथा. तसे तर त्यांनी बर्‍याच शैलीत लेखन केलय. पण सगळ्यात अधिक लोकप्रियता त्यांच्या गुढकथांनाच मिळाली.

प्रस्तुत पुस्तक हे देखील त्यांच्या गुढ कथांच्या संचांपैकी एक.
संदेह ह्या पुस्तकामध्ये लेखकाने, एकुण १० कथांचा समावेश केला आहे.
त्यांपैकी संदेह हि पहिली कथा.
ह्यात मुख्य महिला पात्र एका पर पुरषाशी संबंध ठेवुन, आपला संसार खराब करते हि वरवरची कथा. पण लेखकाने अगदी गुढतेचं वलय देऊन त्या कथेला वेगळीच पातळी दिली, जी वाचायला चांगली वाटते.

त्यानंतरच्या प्रत्येक कथेला, अशाचप्रकारची मांडणी लेखकाने दिलेली आहे.

एक गोष्ट आहे, "ईच्छामरण" ह्या मध्ये, एका ७५ वयाच्या व्यक्तीला, सरकार कडुन ईच्छामरण हवं असते, त्या विषयी तो वर्तमानपत्रात सरकार ला उद्देशुन, कारण, आशय सगळं लिहितो. ह्या कथेला लेखकाने मजेशीर वळण दिलेलं आहे, आणि शेवट गुढ बनवला.

अशाप्रकारे संपूर्ण पुस्तक खुप छान आहे, जे वाचतांना रोमांच तयार करतो. तर नक्की वाचा.

एकूण १० कथा असलेला हा कथासंग्रह. मतकरींचं याआधी वाचलेलं “मृत्युंजयी” मला आवडलं नव्हतं. हेही फारसं नाही आवडलं, कारण यातील जवळपास सर्वच कथांचा अंत काय असू शकतो याचा अंदाज येत (predictable!) राहतो आणि तो बरोबरही ठरतो. गूढकथांसाठी आवश्यक असलेली वातावरणनिर्मिती छान जमलेली असली तरीही सर्वच कथांमध्ये माणसा-माणसांतील कृतघ्नपणा, विकृती, आणि नकारात्मकता इत्यादी दुर्गुणच जास्त अधोरेखित झालेले असल्यामुळे असेल कदाचीत, हे पुस्तकदेखील निराशावादी/नैराश्य आणणारं वाटतं. त्यातल्या त्यात “अपुरी कहाणी” आणि “इच्छामरण” या कथा चांगल्या वाटतात.
