How to boost engagement, make learning memorable, and transform lives. This statement says it all about this book. Creating an atmosphere in the classroom that gives the students a story and a feeling of ownership of the class.
Trevor Muir begins each chapter of the book with a story that draws you into the moment. Each story reminded me of moments in past classes that run back 24 years. From the Trevor Muir’s point of view, “Are we teaching the right way?” If learning is not memorable is it still successful? Present the material in a way that students will remember it and you have succeeded. Offer an engaging classroom that ties material to memories and the stories that go with it and you have succeeded. If the student interacts with the material in a way that will engage them they will remember it.
Throughout the book I couldn’t help but relate each chapter to a moment or particular unit in a particular class that I’ve taught. As a teacher today, to transform a classroom into a world of comfort and engaged learning of content by fusing a variety of subjects and sometimes entertainment will open the students mind to relate material moments in the class. Each unit of the course should have a theme, plot, setting, characters, and conflict ending in resolution. By making the students the hero of their own story and developing their character in the class gives the mindset to be confident in the class. Getting students to invest in the class and the unit by taking ownership of the project and material will help the students grow as the class evolves along the year. Illuminating the walls and room with the students work throughout the year draws their minds back to moments.
What does the student need today? The classroom story will finish with resolution. Between the start and finish, Muir gives a story of to much material in today’s classroom and over presentation. Using positive reinforcement and accountability in the class will create a more conducive environment.
As I finish up the book on The Epic Classroom, my mind wonders through each unit planned for the upcoming year with excitement to start a new story with my new classes and see where the story goes. Although I agree with many of Muir’s viewpoints, there are some other challenges in the modern classroom he failed to address. Using his methods combined with experience, the end of the story will be found in May 2020.

It's okay. I had issues getting over the numerous grammar errors especially given my district invited Mr. Muir to speak. The information he shares in the book though is quite beneficial.

Trevor shares how to create a PBL experience for students through the context of story. Personal, practical, applicable.
