This is the sixteenth book in the Dragon Slayers' Academy series by Kate McMullan. Our girls have been reading a few different dragon stories and so this series is very interesting to them.

The series centers around a school where children are taught to become dragon slayers, primarily for the purpose of enriching the school's headmaster with the slain dragon's hoard. So far he hasn't been the beneficiary of much dragon gold, but I get the feeling that with 19 books in the series, he will keep sending his students out, hoping to succeed at long last.

It's a very entertaining story, with lots of subtle tongue-in-cheek humor and word play within the narrative. The drama in this book centers on a visit to an old knight's home and efforts to placate an attacking dragon with song and dance.

It's a quick read and I liked the story. Our oldest has been reading these stories on her own, so I'm reading them quickly to catch up with her in the series. I am sure that we will look for more of the books in this series at our local library.

interesting quotes:

"When you have been a perfect knight, it is hard to be anything less." (p. 17)

"They showed me that being the best is not as important as trying your best." (p. 100)

Honestly, this entry in the Dragon Slayers’ Academy series was a little ageist in hindsight, both to the old knights and the oldest living dragon. But then again, I am more used to the sort of fantasy dragon that gets more powerful as it ages. And I liked this book just as much as any other Dragon Slayers’ Academy book as a kid.

It was where they are visiting the place where all old people stay. Grizzlegore ,the worlds oldest dragon, was coming to their school to get the gold there and if they don't Grizzlegore will burn down the school so the old people knows the dragon's secret weakness but they have to say this really long poem and dance. So they go to a gym to get shaped up for there dance and go to the school to defeat the dragon.

I liked how the old dragon slayers really worked hard to get in shape and proved that they could do it. (Maybe there's hope for me yet!) And I liked how in the end the dragon slayers and dragon worked together.

The first few books of the series were amusing. This one seemed... boring. The writing is getting annoying, there are fewer puns and interesting turns of phrase. it's all a bit tired. Sorry. :( My son still likes it, though.
