Dragon Slayers' Academy #11

Danger! Wizard at Work!

Rate this book
When Wiglaf and his pals from Dragon Slayers' Academy meet up with the wizard Zelnoc, all they ask is for a little magic to help them get through the Dark Forest fast.  But unfortunately, Zelnoc's spells always end with an "Oops! Sorry about that!"  So, yes, the boys are able to travel much faster now...but that's because they have wings, can fly, and have been turned into dragons!  And they become the newest students at Dragon Slackers' Academy, a school that teaches knight-slaying !  This funny turnabout in which the kids from DSA suddenly see life from a dragon's point of view makes a wonderful addition to this popular series!

This chapter book, written by Kate McMullan and illustrated by Bill Basso (2004), is part of the Dragon Slayers' Academy series. I like to think of these quick reads as sitcoms – amusing stories with recurring jokes and lovable characters. (Kind Wiglaf wouldn't hurt a fly, yet somehow he's in a school for slaying dragons! Enthusiastic "Eric" is really Princess Erica in disguise, because the school is so medieval it's for boys only! Angus is lazy and loves to eat! Cue the laugh track.)

In this installment, which is Book 11, bumbling wizard Zelnoc turns the three friends into dragons. Oops! Then they stumble into a different DSA – Dragon Slackers' Academy – which is a school for dragons. Oh, no! Funnily enough, there are parallels between the two schools – a headmaster who cares only about gold, and a cafeteria that serves yucky eels. The three friends eventually become human again, but not before they are outed as dragon slayers in disguise. Busted!

One of the ways they give themselves away is that Erica can't help but correct the dragon teacher who is lecturing the students about dragon slayers and getting everything wrong. It seems to me that in light of the parallels between the two schools, it may be that when the humans teach about dragons at Dragon Slayers' Academy, they too are getting everything wrong. For some reason, the author doesn't address this implication. Hmmm.

My REAL last book of the year. Honestly, there's not a single thing I can think of that would improve this book. We've finally achieved quintessential Wiglaf.

The cover and title alone promise a great one– a Zelnoc-focused story, finally, as he deserves, my man– and BOY HOWDY were there dragons in this one!!! The idea of and that was so nice to see.

This one made me realize that, across the series, we've only really dealt with one family of antagonistic dragons so far– and frankly, I'm kinda into that. An entire clan of dragons, numbering in the thousands, feuding with a tween who pukes when he sees blood. It's like a dramatic soap opera, but only from their end, and that's really funny to think about.

So the conflict there was strong, but it was the effort with which this one was written that really caught me this time. The And this one was just FUNNY in some parts. There were some CLEVER little lines that made it seem to me like the author was experiencing positive emotions when she was writing it.

Also. Wizards apparently roar like animals, recreationally, to pump themselves up. This is a little bit of worldbuilding provided to us with no effect on the plot that I'm honestly going to take as Zelnoc individually being a little freak but you know what, maybe not? maybe not. either way he's in my head.

Yeah, this one really impressed me. In the context of the larger series, #11 simply checks all the boxes. Five stars. Fight me.

This is the eleventh book in the Dragon Slayers' Academy series by Kate McMullan. Our girls have been reading a few different dragon stories and so this series piqued their interest.

The story centers around a school where children are taught to become dragon slayers, primarily for the purpose of enriching the school's headmaster with the slain dragon's hoard. So far he hasn't been the beneficiary of much dragon gold, but I get the feeling that with 19 books in the series, he will keep sending his boys out, hoping to succeed at long last.

It's a very entertaining story, with lots of subtle tongue-in-cheek humor and word play within the narrative. The drama in this book centers on Wiglaf, Angus, and Erica becoming dragons.

It's a quick read and I liked the story. Our oldest has been reading these stories on her own, so I'm reading them quickly to catch up with her in the series. I am sure that we will look for more of the books in this series at our local library.
