“No one likes an easy fight and…” The Scythian hesitated. “The strong deserve to live. You are built from strength. You wear it like armor.” Book 1-Rebels Blade- 4 Stars!! Book 2-Crowns Shield- 4.5 Stars!! Book 3-Enemys Queen- 4 Stars!! Book 4-Kings Warrior- 5 Stars!!
LOVE, Love - LOVE this series!!! This picked up right where Rebels Blade left off- and went from there! These books are pretty addicting - once you start you wont want to stop- You have been warned :P
The plot is thickening and things are really starting to take off in Book 2! Tehl and Sage are together a lot more in this book - and they are starting to build somewhat of a friendship. Their banter is great and flows nicely.
All the princes are just amazing each with their own personality that really makes each individual stand out. Sam is a womanizer and Gav is just a teddy bear I want to take home with me. Tehl is so awkward and I absolutely love that about him.
HOLY CLIFFHANGER- this book had me on the edge of my seat as it ended!! I can not wait to pick up book 3 and 4!! If you're looking to get lost in a Feud of Kingdoms - I highly recommend this series!
For some reason, I decided to read this even though the first book was a 2-star for me. And i regretted it. Sage was even more annoying in this and that's saying alot.
A major plot didn't even make sense and seemed to happen just to get the potential love interests in the same place. Speaking of love interest, by the end of this, the love interests were still in the hate part of the hate-love story I'm assuming the author was going for. I don't think I have read a book that has taken this long to establish a romantic connection. Will they even end up together at this point?
Frost Kay has done it again with cliffhangers! Why does she torture us??? Enjoyed the sequel to The Rebel's Blade! The storyline flowed perfectly and I was enthralled with where it was going and how it would end. I was a bit iffy with Sage in this one and didn't connect with her as well as I did in the first book. I know the situation she was thrown into was basically forced on her but she complained and whined a bit too much... considering things could've been A LOT worse. I did feel for her because of her traumatic nightmares and the fact she literally had only one choice to make that wouldn't result in bloodshed, but there were a few places throughout the story where I think she should've had a more positive attitude instead of being a constant gloomy storm cloud. Tehl, Sam and Gav, love those princes! They have the cutest family relationship and the banter always makes me laugh. Rafe... the character I have an equal about of love and hate for. There's something mysterious about him but he needs to learn what boundaries are. Rhys. Ugh. He needs a dagger to the face and promptly. Good things come to those who wait so I'm hoping his death scene will be forthcoming in the next book.
A little dissapointed. Sage was a complete brat in this book, yet every man seemed to be head over heels in love with her. Plus her rants were basically her saying the same thing over and over again. I did like the character development of basically every other character tho. Thel is starting to thaw out a little and Sam was shown in a much more positive light. Warning: Cliffhanger.
Love, love, love this book!! It picked up right where Rebels Blade ended, and I could not put it down!! Completely read it in one sitting! It was amazing! I am sooo looking forward to the next book in the series!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
What the heck just happened. What a stupid stupid plot and so incredibly unbelievable.
Again I am going to harp on the relationship that Sage has with her family. It is strange, and they just seem to let her do anything she damn well pleases. Also, they don't really protect her. They talk of her brothers but they are completely MIA and you don't even see the closeness she has with her family, a family which she claims to love and protect. I just don't see it.
I liked the idea of her being the liaison between the Crown and the Rebellion, and I really felt like that was going somewhere...until she somehow got suckered into marrying Tehl. What? How is that even believable!? Also, I know that Frost wants us to learn something about who Rafe really is, but I would rather her just come out and say what he is than desciribing Rafe growling and making noises. It is weird. I also don't know if I like his character or hate him.
Sage is literally a brat throughout this entire book. You are suppose to like the main character, but I actually hate her. She repeats the same things over and over again, her abuse and treatment and how everyone has hurt and used her...after a while it starts to get old. She is narrow minded, selfish and far to hot tempered. She constantly got angry, yelled the same things at people and would storm away. I don't understand why she treats Tehl so terribly when he has obviously been NOTHING but good to her. She can suddenly like Sam, but not Tehl? That is stupid.
Sam and Tehl are characters I still liked, and they grew the most in this book. They showed a gentler side, that was there in Rebel's Blade, but it was far more touching in this one. I didn't like that Marq was completely absent in this book. He should be playing a bigger role, and its like he completely disappeared.
I feel like Frost is trying soo hard to come up with a political story to validate an upcoming war, but it falls flat. She focuses the entire book on Sage and everything else becomes secondary to the point that when a war is mentioned, I start asking why. There is not much historical world building besides the mention of another war and a savage and ruthless sort of people. But WHY are the so ruthless? Why do they want to eradicate other populations, and what is their beef with the land of Aermian?
Also why is Rhys not dead, HOW is he not dead. For 2 WHOLE books there have been promises and talks about how he is going to die and its going to be painful and blah blah blah, and suddenly he kidnaps her at the end? What the actual f?! I dunno if I could handle reading book 3 in hopes that it might be better.

In short, this book set up the whole enemies-to-lovers trope by forcing betrothal upon the two protagonists in question. But all the drama and the angst felt overdone with no real progress in the main plot. And of course, the book ended on yet another cliff-hanger (I am guessing it's the author's M.O) which makes it frustrating not to pick up the next book even though I planned to drop the series after suffering through this one.
I am so sad to even write this but Sage really got on my nerves in this book. Rebel’s Blade was so good but I could barely get through this one. I rolled my eyes a lot and skipped quite a few paragraphs because I just couldn’t bear to read about her complaining...again and again. Plus, Rafe needs to go, he got on my nerves about the same amount as Sage did and Rhys?? Don’t even get me started on him, why is he still alive? Ugh. I pre-ordered the 3rd book so I’m hoping it’s better than this one. Very disappointed.
Crowns Shield picks up where Rebels Blade finishes. If you liked the first book you will love this second book, the plot has grown further, and its becoming exciting and scary in parts. Frost Kay made me scream and shout ... I was reading then Bam cliffhanger and it ended. That doesn't mean i didn't absolutely love the book. It just means this cliffhanger was at a crucial part. I need answers.....**patiently waits for book 3**, You will devour Crowns Shield and be hungry for more! Sage and Tehl start to get along more in this book, circumstances bring them more into each others lives, they find a way to make it work mutually. We are getting glimpses of the other lands in book two. Sirens Lure (prequel novella) also shares more on other lands, and back stories on a few characters in Crowns Shield.
Enjoyed the first book better. After 50% of this book I could not take any more of Sages whining!! I thought she was suppose to be smart and mature.... She keeps saying the same things over and over and over! Also why is Rhys still alive? Does not make sense with all the promises and powerful men around.
Sad because I really like the story and characters.
Book 2 takes off exactly where we left it and the end of book 1. There are so many things that happened and some new friends introduced.
Sage has to be one of the most frustratingly stubborn characters, in the best way possible. I loved that we have both her and Tehl's perspective. All the other side characters also makes it that much more enjoyable. I adore Sam 💙💙💙
I laughed, i cried, i wanted to strangle Sage and Tehl.
The ending almost killed me so lucky for me the next book is out already so i jumped right into that.
This book was SOOOO much better than the first one. Not only was it better connected, but it was also SOOO much more badass. There were moments in the book where I would literally bounce and squeal at just how ferocious dear Sage was. So all in all it was a PRETTY good book. I didn't even look up once from the moment the book began. It was THAT good.
I was pretty torn about this book. I really enjoyed reading it, more than the first book even, but there were some things that just didn't really sit right with me. I would have given it a three, but the four reflects the amount I truly enjoyed reading the story and following the characters.
Some things that I thought were great about this book:
1. There was a lot more character development in this book. I really started to feel the relationship between Tehl, Sage, Sam, and Rafe.
2. I love that Rafe is such a mystery. We didn't get a whole lot of him in book 1 and book 2 definitely sets us up with curiosity about WHAT and WHO he actually is. AH the SUSPENSE!
3. I loved Tehl in this book. He's just such a stand up guy. I feel absolutely awful that he has such a difficult time w/ ppl and specifically Sage 'cause he is amazing underneath all that flustering awkwardness.
Some things that I didn't enjoy about the book:
1. It was weird, in this book Sage seemed like a completely different character. She kept blaming other people for her predicament and spent a lot of time complaining. The girl I met in book 1 would have taken responsibility for her own role in her life and thrown all the other trash away. It struck me as really weird that she continues to state that she "loathes" Tehl, despite all the wonderful things he has done for her. She knows it wasn't his fault what happened in the first book, but she continues to pretend that what happened to her is a defining point of his personality.
2. Not really spoilers for plot, just for what happens (very generally) in one scene! But I'll block it to save your eyes, in case you want completely spoiler-free reading of the book!
Despite the above listed 2 things, I still really enjoyed this book. I think Frost Kay is going to end up as one of my favorite authors if she keeps telling stories like this! I am excited for the next book to come out! At this point, I am 100% team Tehl and 0% team Rafe.
Likes: - The pace - Frost Kay demonstrates such a wonderful grasp of PTSD and represents mental health so well! I'm really happy about this =] - Sage calmed down and wasn't as all over the place with her reactions and emotions as she was in book one, so I was able to understand and follow her train of thought much better in this book from the extra internalisation - Love the Sirenidae discovery! I really enjoyed Lilja's character and was glad to have another female. I need to get my hands on Siren's Lure now because Hayjen and Lilja have me very curious! - Sam is lovely and terrible as usual haha. He really intrigues me and I was so glad we got to uncover a little more about him... - Not a lot happened, but I was still intrigued the whole time? That's some good pace, banter and writing to keep me hooked!
Dislikes: - No world building again. Actually, no, there was a teeny tiny little bit about the Nagalians and Draconians and why Scythia had attacked them, as well as the Sae dance, but that was it. - With that point, there hasn't been a single mention about religion, which confused me because the characters say "for god's sake", "lord save me", "for heaven's sake" and "bloody hell", so there are religious aspects of this world, including the wedding ceremony, but there hasn't been a description of who they worship or their religion whatsoever. - There were a lot of mistakes again. Even super popular books have mistakes, but this one had 17 (that I noticed) and it was just too many for me to ignore =( - The Scythian "baddies" are POC characters, whereas the rest of the cast are white... I don't think this was intentional at all, but I definitely noticed it and hope for some further explanation in the next book, and to see loads more diversity within Aermia! - Again, like with Rebel's Blade, the speech didn't always reflect the era. Indoor plumbing is unheard of in any houses except for the royal castle, and people don't know what oxygen is, or that it's in water, which suggests a 16th Century-ish setting. So when housing, clothing, travel, weapons and things like the aforementioned plumbing and oxygen denote a more medieval time period, and characters say things like "damn straight", "hook, line, and sinker", "if there is anything I can do to repay you Ms...", "what's your angle?" and "keep your shirt on" it kind of threw me out of the story. - We're in a fictional fantasy world, so I was confused when a new character started speaking French? She referred to Sage as "Ma fleur" all the time, which also added to the pet name/endearment issues I had in book one that continued in book two. - Everyone has to give Sage a pet name and it got on my nerves - one or two, I can understand, but almost everyone was calling her something other then her name and it just feels condescending. "My little shadow", "Little one", "love", "darling", "ma fleur", "sis" - The line "She/he sucked in a breath" was overused in the extreme. No one could breathe normally, everyone had to suck in a breath haha. - Tehl didn't have much development at all, and when half the story is told from his perspective I expected more character growth (like with Sage) - Sam's single POV chapter was a strange addition again. I really want more from him - he's my favourite. - Nothing much happened? It kind of all led up to the wedding, which felt a bit anticlimactic. - Everyone continually tells Sage how amazing and strong and beautiful and smart she is ALL the time and it frustrated me a lot. In almost every conversation between Sage and someone else, they ended up bestowing every compliment on her under the sun and it wasn't believable. Sage is a great character, but I want to believe that on my own, not by being told 1000 times by every other character.
Overall I think the execution of this book was better than Rebel's Blade, but the plot wasn't as enticing. They're still enjoyable reads that flow really well and are easy to follow, so I recommend them! Can't wait to see how the story evolves in Enemy's Queen and find out more about Hayjen and Lilja in Siren's Lure =]
Frost Key’s Crown Shield is a heart retrenching story about how the wold as you see it isn’t always black and white. Picking up from where Rebels’ Blade ended, we are trusted back into this enchanting world, like a gun shot.
I was slacked jawed by the first book, the cliff-hanger was movie worthy and Sage, she is by far one of my most favourite heroines of all time. This book has outshined its predecessor, and has set the stage for an epic explosive next installment that I can’t wait to get my hands on.
There is so much I want to say, to spill.. to spoil. But, as I do with most second books, I keep it to the structure. There are too many things that can spoil the first book from the seconds review. And that my friends isn’t something I want to do.
The flow is faster then the first, but there is an undertone of something dark lurking in the shadows. Trust is a hard thing to come by, and finding the truth isn’t always satisfying. I do have my theories, just pulling from my own military background. (One day I might, divulge them, but for now I’ll keep my working theory to myself) There are so many twist, turns and just heartbreaking movements that takes you from one extreme to the next.
Oh and that ending… that freaking ending! How am I going to get through? I need answers.
Take my word, and my high recommending that this series is something you need to read. Outside of the solid plot, dark undertones and pending war, there is a rich, lifeness to these characters that captures you, connects you to their world. You will not feel the same after reading. Be warned.
I am really into this series. I've fallen in love with most of the characters, especially Tehl who always says and does the wrong things because he is awkward and has poor people skills. I like the heroine, Sage, but I think she has misread Tehl and unfairly judges and mistreats him. The author is a master at creating and maintaining loveable characters.
The first book focused on Sage's capture by the Crown and learning about the Rebellion which started because the people didn't believe the Crown was doing anything about the Scythians crossing the border and stealing and killing Aermians.
Sage was tortured in her cell while the princes were away dealing with a border skirmish with the Scythians. She believed it was sanctioned by the Crown but, once she was free, learned that the man who tortured her was actually sent by the Rebellion. Rafe, the leader of the Rebellion claimed he did not know Rhys aka Serge would torture her but the Rebel council voted not to punish Rhys anyway.
Now, Sage deals with PTSD and nightmares but still carries on to bring the country together.
This book focused on using Sage as a liaison between the Crown and Rebellion to come together to prepare for whatever bad thing the Scythians are planning. Ages ago, the Scythians wiped out to other races using some kind of science. They have no idea what they are cooking up now.
I can't tell you how this book ended but I can say it made my blood pressure spike and made me hurry to download the next book in the series. Things are getting crazy!
3 stars Sadly I might have to give up on this series. It was fun while it lasted but it is kind of getting redundant. The main character was strong and feisty which I loved, but for some reason she was determined to hate the prince. Now I understand that her freedom has been taken away and she has been betrayed many times, but there’s no need to make things harder on herself by being rude to the prince/her husband. She also does not really think about other people. She has so many friends in the castle that she totally throws away because she needs her free time. I also don’t really understand this big bad threat to their home. It needs more behind it for it to make sense. Anyways if you managed to make it through that mini rant about the bad I really liked the world building and the action. I liked the other characters and thought the were but nicely.
IDK what I am going to do about the rest of the books.

These books are super easy to fly through, but be aware of the sexual assault mentions and PTSD that our female protagonist has throughout the series. This installation of the series has added a whole new meaning to the relationships in Sage’s life- with the Aermian royalty, and with her rebel peers. I adore Sage for her dedication, for her bluntness, and for knowing where she stands- she’s relatable for everything she sacrifices for everyone else. However, sometimes she gets to wrapped up in everyone else that she abandons herself- which I’m interested to see how this plays out. Tehl is figuring out who he is as a political figurehead and as a man, with the challenge of Sage to push him. It’s an interesting take on enemies-to-lovers, and not in the usual sense. I found that the supporting characters took over Tehl a bit and even though I know he’s growing as a character, he’s not very likable. He owns his awkwardness and awful ability to charm people, and I can tell he wants to do better- so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.
Listen, I'm invested in the story but did anything even happen? I mean, other than the obvious . There's no progress when it comes to the impending war. There was some progress in relationship building but very lackluster in my opinion. All the talk about female attire is annoying but I can see why the author is tackling it the way she is in the series. Doesn't mean I have to like it though. I'm still not over the writing style. It is bothersome. All in all, I like the story enough to want to finish it but not to sing praises about it.
I was really banking on the plot in this installment to develop as the first book was really slow, and I guess I got what I asked for.
All of the things I thought were cute and fun in book one really started to get on my nerves moving into book 2. Sage is so Mary Jane, and everyone is so obsessed with her that it's getting out of hand. There are too many men who think the sun shines out of her ass to even try to keep up.
I’m really only giving this three stars because it was pretty on par with book 1 and I’m holding out hope that some really shit is going to go down so we can super stir the pot.
I like the characters, but parts of the book are just a mess. The dialogue can be stilted, the motivations unclear, and if Sage “cocks her hip” one more time I might have to DNF. Also, I wish she’d decide if Sage has chestnut or raven colored hair. But still willingly going on to the next in the series.
Every now & then you read a book that thoroughly impresses you from beginning to end in ALL aspects. Rare - but it happens and when it does you want to share the awesomeness with the world. READ THIS BOOK! The storyline and character development are AMAZING!!! Honestly - this author is one you will want to put on your radar! Sage is AWESOME but the supporting characters are not to be overlooked... GAV......❤❤❤❤❤
Sage's saga continues... Even more character development, and more plot twists!! Had a very hard time putting this one down. Such a great cast of characters that play off of each other really well. I found myself laughing more at the banter between them in this book. Story is unfolding nicely. But, the ENDING!!! I was literally staring into space (mouth open) for 10 minutes after I read the final word of this book!! I took me that long to process how my emotions were shattered at the cliffhanger in the end! I google "The Aermian Feuds, Book 3" everyday for any news i can find, just hoping for a projected release date. Please don't keep us waiting too much longer Frost... and Thank you for this great series!!
I read some other reviews that talked about how whiny Sage was throughout this book. I figured those people were just being overly critical considering what she went through. I was very wrong. She is basically intolerable in this book. I did not find myself connecting with her at all. All the other characters spent a great deal of time talking about how selfless, caring, compassionate, etc she is but we don't really ever see her DO anything other than complain about her lot in life. I enjoyed all the secondary characters in this book. Sam and Gav are great and are probably what kept me reading. I read this entire book hoping to get to a point where I liked Sage. Finally her relationship with Tehl makes a tiny amount of progress in the last 1% of the book. Now it seems we will have to start all over again. I don't think I have it in me to read the 3rd book after finding out there is a 4th which isn't even out yet. At the end of the day, I need a little more romance with my turmoil but that is only my humble opinion.
Crown's Shield begins right when the first one ended. Sage has been found out by the Crown Prince, and when things start to get out of control, the Crown and the Rebellion decide to put Sage in the middle, literally. She will be the neutral party in this, but things get bad for Sage when it feels like the Rebellion turns their back on her.
This book was awesome! I loved the plot line, and all of the main characters as well. And my heart went out to Sage. She was a wonderful, brave soul, who did what she could to help the people in her land.
This book ends on a crazy cliffhanger, and now I'm upset that I must wait for the next book, but I'm looking forward to it!
