Loved the unique way of presenting the entire story of Ramayana as the consequence of five significant choices made by Sita. I hope this book, that summarizes the eternal epic in a very simple and engaging manner, would enthuse kids to explore more nuances of Ramayana going forward.
I am surprised that some adult reviewers getting disappointed by the simplicity of the narrative style. What part of the title "The Ramayana for children" misled them for such expectations? On the contrary, I wished the stories were written with further simplicity. I am sure kids are going to ask a lot of questions to their parents while reading this book, and I think that is a good thing.
It's a simple book with a simple narrative. The illustrations are bold and nice. My takeaway from it has been that we all have choices to make, when we have made some then accept their consequences with grace.
This books states choices made by sita for which she pays the price. 1.Her wish to in exile with Ram 2. Crossing laxman rekha. 3.Didn't cooperate with Hanuman when he came to rescue her from ravana. 4.Ram asks her not to come Ayodhya after defeating ravan she refuses and list goes on. Ramayan is a love story between two birds one is inside cage i.e. Ram and other is free which is Sita.
Even thought it is a children’s book but definitely it taught me a lessons and told me stories that I had not heard before which are the stories after the dearth of Ravana.
Honestly, I was expecting a quite different perspective from this book, but, Devdutt Pattanaik disappointed me by this book. No doubt the content was good, but it was like a comic book. I finished it within 1.5-2 hours. Something more could have been added to this and could have made this more interesting and resourceful. Things were written simply with almost everything that we know, the book mainly describes 5 choices made by Lady Sita in The Ramayan. Stating the view that Ramayan is not just about choices and decisions of Lord Ram, but also of Lady Sita. If you have interest in mythology and are looking for some light reading you can pick up this book, but don't expect some great material and insights!
I was planning to read Devdutt children's books for a long time, importantly bcos it's mythology, I finally had my hands and off course I enjoyed this one. to mention I pick this book cos I love Ramayana, reading Ramayana in different perspective is so cool and also how the choices of sita made the epic incredible. it feels like sita is the one who gives the twist and turn to the story. And Devdutt gives the most important lesson of life in simple form, that rules and choices are important in our life the thing is in whr we have to follow the rules and whr we have to choose, this two things changes our life's direction. I definitely recommend this book to all the children's above the age of 7 and also to the grown ups. Devdutt hv also covered more key points of the epic so it's just not only suits for kids, the grown up who reads also gets the quick facts of the Ramayana. I recommend everyone to have ur hands on this quick and easy read.
পুস্তক পরিচয় : The Girl Who Chose লেখক : Devdutt Pattanayek প্রকাশনা : Penguin Books Limited কিছুদিন আগে The Girl Who Chose বইটি পড়লাম।
I am not a fan of Devdutta Patatnaik , but this one is interesting. It was gift to my daughter and when I started narrating her the story even I gained wisdom. In a very simple fashion he tried to explain why all the events in Ramayana happened the way because of choices which Sita made. A very nice lesson I inferred from this is - "The choices we make determine our destiny" and "Once we choose the path follow it gracefully no matter what are the consequences". I added this book to my gift list for kids around.
The book retells Ramayana from Sita's point of view. The book touches upon the narrative, focusing more upon the choices made by Sita and how they shape the story. Kids are sure to enjoy the story along with Pattnaik's little anecdotes and elaborate illustrations. The new perspective on the old epic also piques interest. The book presents the epics in a very lucid language which is simple enough for the young minds to grasp. The elaborate illustrations by the author himself deserve a mention too.
As A management Guru, Shri Devdhar Pattanaikji, has evaluated the great epic Ramayana. As the title suggests it is not only for Children but for the child resides within every individual who sometimes can read through illustrations more than through paragraphs. This book is written to read through in difficult situations of one's life, when making decisions and choices are difficult. The choice and consequence phenomena is narrated through the character of Sita. Such a valuable literature deserve a permanent stay in our bookshelves to refer and suggest the young readers.
What this reminded me of was that even then there wasn't anything wrong or right about how women chooses to live their lives. While today we are dictated and crushed under carrying the burdens of so called rules of the society. Sita chooses to not live or go back where she's not loved and respected, despite being fully aware of the fact that Ram loved her. She's free to make a choice.
Didn’t realize it’s a children’s book when I ordered for it. It’s not bad as a children’s book (I especially like the lessons at the end). However, I guess I was hoping for something more feminist perhaps!
Furthermore, there were many sentences in this book that I just couldn’t digest well. To be fair though, it’s not the book’s fault - it’s the tale of Ramayana. Never been a big fan of it in its traditional form. A man who leaves his awesome wife to appease his kingdom. Blah!
I bought this book for my 3 months old baby (Overenthusiastic!! ). . But then I have been reading to her since when she was a few centimeters big. This is the story of The Ramayana or The Sita Charitam, narrated in a very simple manner with bold illustration and, pointing out an important message, which I will be happy to teach my kid. 3.5 stars (for the book) + 0.5 stars (as it is her first book from me).
A very light read. A great book for gifting to school kids giving a brief about the epic Ramayana. The book along with Sita's story has many teachings and facts which I was not aware about. Only the essential facts have been provided in this book making it a light read which can be completed in one sitting (max 1 hour). The conclusion of the story is make choices and embrace them gracefully. Overall a one time read I would say.
Our choices makes us who we are. We have the power to choose. I am not bound by rules. I am free to make a choice. Human society is made of rules and choices. When rules do not help, we have the choice to challenge and change them.if you make a choice accept the consequences with grace. #Thegirlwhochose Sita made her choices ..#mythology #indianmythology #devduttpattnaik #puffinindia
While the narrative is simple, the book sets the tone as if Site's choices were the reason for Ramayana to happen. It fails to acknowledge that whether to follow rules or not is also a "choice" and Ram used this choice numerous times. Even he was choosing at every juncture of this story. By far, less logical as compared to the author's other books.
This book for children with beautiful art and story of Sita. This was truly captivating for me while I read this for my child who loved it too!! The language is kept easy and crisp for kids to easily understand. Certain words are explained separtely in a creative way. I think this is my forever keeps.
With so many evangelist entering our country and trying to rob us away from our religion and culture, I think it's best to equip our kids. Thanks to Devdutt and Sudha Murthy I think it's easier to get out kids interested in our religion and fight this battle.
Loved it! This is as much for adults as for children 8 and above. I would recommend that parents read this first, so that they can be prepared for the questions their children might have. Fun illustrations, simplified text and lots of extra trivia. Highly recommend.
I ll give it 2 stars , I still feel some more deeper explaination is required to understand seeta's character and her role as lady who agrees to give Agni pariksha.
The book describes ramayana in the most concise form. Great to read this out for kids as well. The illustrations/pictures of the incidents are really catchy and interesting.
