Tale Town is on lockdown as Mayor Fitch prepares for an attack from the trolls. Desperate to gain the trolls’ magical power, he is encouraging a war and gambling his town’s safety on his quest for magical power.
The children of Tale Town learn from their troll-child friend that Hurrilan, the leader of the trolls, is planning an attack. They must move fast to save their troll friend from danger, release Rufaro from Hurrilan’s crystal ball and convince the people of Tale Town of Fitch’s evil plan. All seems lost until a leaf from the story tree changes everything . . .
Tom Percival writes and illustrates picture books (you know, for kids) as well as illustrating books written by other people. The most well known of these is probably the excellent Skulduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy.
He grew up in a remote and beautiful part of South Shropshire. On reflection this seemed rather more remote than beautiful, owing to the fact that he lived in a small caravan without electricity, mains water or any sensible form of heating. He thinks that he’s probably one of the few people in his peer group to have learnt to read by gas lamp. Surprisingly enough he has never been called ‘hippy’ (to the best of his knowledge)
Tom now lives in an actual house with his girlfriend and their two young sons. His favourite colour is turquoise and his favourite number is usually seven.
Tom has three picture books available, Tobias and the Super Spooky Ghost Book, A Home for Mr Tipps, Jack's AMAZING Shadow and a fourth, Herman's Letter will be publishing in October 2012 through Bloomsbury
I led a group of very bright 1st Graders in reading this book. This is a fun book that is humorous, relatable, and action-packed. At the end of each chapter, we stopped to work in our Study Guide and the kids groaned. Not because the study-guide was overly onerous--it wasn't--I wrote it so it was awesome and fun (wink), they just couldn't wait to see what would happen next. They laughed in all the right places and felt conflicted and tense at times as they tried to figure out who were the good-guys and who were the bad guys. It's complicated...
For kids this young, reading in a group is best as some of the concepts and some of the vocabulary was challenging. But with proper scaffolding in a group setting the kids learned a lot while having a ton of fun. The discussions they had were fantastic!
The strength of this book is how it made the kids think deeply. E.g.: The mayor of Tale Town is a tyrant that is selling selfishness and self-aggrandizement as safety by building a wall around the town and keeping all non-humans out and away from the Story Tree that was planted by humans and trolls centuries ago. This provokes a war. Our young heros are caught in the middle, banished by the mayor, but trying to stop the war and find a better way to end the mayor's tyranny.
The troll army, consisting of all banished races, are ready to fight to regain control. The troll leader Hurrilan, could become the new leader of Tale Town. But they ask themselves would that be any better? He resentful and distrustful of humans. Would he end up as tyrannical against humans? You'd be astonished at the ideas from six and seven-year-olds on the topic.
Pretty heady stuff for 1st Graders.
He also presents the idea of "history is written by the victors" which also spurred a lively discussion.
However, there is also a courageous chicken. And a half-blind dragon. And super smart gorillas. And a quirky magician that accidentally turns himself into a bowl of pasta. So much fun.
We started with this volume (6) which came with a couple of challenges. There are a lot of characters, and there are some references to the other volumes. We overcame the abundance of characters by photo-copying the pictures and cutting them out and pasting them on popsicle sticks as puppets. When they were introduced, we found the puppet and wrote the name of the character on the back. The kids took turns animating the puppets when it wasn't their turn to read.
When the book referenced an earlier volume, we'd stop and speculate as to what happened in that story.
The vocabulary was challenging too, but it was a fantastic opportunity to learn new words, and I was always right there when the reader got stuck, then we'd write three new words from each chapter in our study guide and each would choose their favorite.
A great read for young kids chock full of fun, adventure, and seeds of wisdom.
Now for the fun part. Each reader wrote their own review:
Tarinapuu on kuudes osa Satujen sankarit -sarjaa, jossa klassisten satujen hahmot löytävät itsensä uusista seikkailuista. Jännittävä ja vauhdikas tarina päättää upean, erilaisuutta juhlistavan sarjan, johon ei voi olla ihastumatta.
This is the last book (i think) in the little legends series. It jumps in where the last one left off, so while most of the little legends can be stand alone books, this one would be much better enjoyed with reading at least book 5. My kids and I just finished this up today, and it was fun. A great ending to the series with some not-so-subtle hints about friendship because of kindness is much more important than looking the same, or being in close proximity. Overall, it was a great series with some good lessons about what makes a friendship great, our differences make us awesome, sometimes the government might be wrong... all tied with humor, magic and wonderful illustrations.
Final book in the series shows the group working together with other characters from the series to finally defeat Mayor Fitch and save Tale Town. Lots of fun and adventures as everything does not go smoothly along the way.
Great story and characters! I really enjoyed this take on these classic fairytale characters. The series ended very well, and we thoroughly enjoyed the story.
