Julia Bagal's life has hit rock bottom. A murder in her duplex, a missing body, and then, her hated supervisor is strangled. Only this dead body was found in Julia's cubicle. Now, sitting in a police station, she is scared she might be a suspect…or worse yet, the intended victim.
She suspects who might be involved, but before she can question her, the woman disappears. Entangled in a web of deceit, Julia is afraid the missing woman is in danger and searches to find her. With the clock ticking, she's forced to accept the help of a man she believes is dangerous. A man trained to kill by the best, the U.S. Army. Julia finds herself drawn to the man who seems to know too much about her.
Suddenly, Julia uncovers a terrifying secret. A bungled CIA operation twenty-three years ago has put her on a deadly collision course of vengeance and betrayal.
A good old fashioned spy story. Cold war spies in a modern day world. Corrupt politicians and Russian involvement. Seems like I hear about DJ Steele's story line on the news every day!
(3.5 stars) I enjoyed this story, and the characters were interesting and well developed. What I didn't like was the ending, which did not fully resolve the story. I really dislike books that are not stand-alones, complete stand-alones, no cliffhangers at all. The problem is I have so many books TBR that I may not get back to the 'sequel' for many months and may even forget about the first book (and I tend to forget books quickly as I read so many). I definitely will not be picking up another book.
Enjoyable spy novel with action adventure for the money.
The story was good but at times it bogged down with a lot of background. I did like the book but not the ending all though this it part of a series the bad guy has to go on.
Had a good story. Thought the characters could be developed a little more. The use of time, especially when travel occurred could be confusing. Needed some more editing.
My favourite character was the grandmother. It was a complete surprise to me of her being a spy. Now, how about Carved and Julia, will we hear more from them. Enjoyed
Declared Dead is a debut novel from DJ Steel and she knows how to deliver! Buy this book, crawl into a comfortable place because once you start reading, you won’t be able to put it down. This book kept me hooked until the end. This book is on my UnPutDownAble Shelf! The characters felt real and the plot had lots of twists and turns, but it was easy to follow. The blurb and the cover are well done and the book is inspired by True Events. Elke is a spectacular character and I would have loved growing up with her. If you love a thriller, KGB and CIA page turner, this one is for you. Did the Cold War really end?
