I wouldn't normally review a textbook on Goodreads (I wouldn't normally sit in the bed and read the entire textbook, from the first to the last page) but this one is truly outstanding. I wasn't even particularly keen on engineering when I was studying it and Michael Ashby made me love materials science so much that there were moments I had tears in my eyes whilst reading this book. Essential read for every engineer, material scientist or product designer. Do materials have personality? Of course they do!

I am very mixed about this book. On one hand it led to the creation of the course that has pushed me to the edge of my sanity, but on the other it has also offered me many cryptic solutions to my woes. A true double edged sword of a book.

A really good textbook connecting material attributes to design goals. It has been a solid companion throughout my studies, design and research work. Very informative and inspiring at the same time.
