Review:

When Ethan Moore stepped into a gay club after his job interview, he didn’t expect to make such a strong connection with one of the hottest guys at the club. He also didn’t expect that the man that did such amazing things to his body two weeks ago would end up being his new boss. This book is full of humor, sex, and romance. The plot of this story has Chance Harlow falling for the one night stand that he had two weeks ago. Now he is his new employee and his player days may be numbered. The chemistry between Chance and Ethan had me wanting to smack Ethan on the side of the head and say go for it. The pacing is great and the author lets us enjoy watching this relationship grow into a perfect ending. Yes this book is worth reading.

Taking a Chance was ok. I wanted to love it, and it had a lot of potential, but it fell a little short with me.

The boss/employee trope is a favorite of mine, but what isn’t a favorite is the whole manwhore thing. I think it’s been a little overdone. It also leaves me with an uncomfortable feeling while reading about the character. I mean, of course he’s going to change, and there will be a happily ever after or it wouldn’t be a romance. I just had a difficult time relating to/liking Chance…even though there was an underlying reason for why he is the way he is. I’m not saying he was a total ass, but there was a time or two where I though he needed a good bitchslap.

I liked Ethan. He didn’t want to be in a small town, but coming to San Francisco was a culture shock, from his first trip to a gay bar to adapting to working in an office around a bunch of people. His feelings for Chance are obvious, but he want to be professional and work his way up without people think he’s being helped by sleeping with the boss. He did well for awhile, but Chance was convincing and he finally gave in one night in Bali. (I feel like I could go on for a long time about that night, but I don’t want to give anything away. Also, it kind of pissed me off before I got happy, so…) Chance and Ethan had a lot of chemistry. Their relationship was kind of a slow burn, and there was a lot of sexual tension. When they do come together it’s HOT. The sex was amazing! Emjay Haze certainly knows how to write a delicious sex scene. Steam was pouring out of my Kindle.

Ethan and Chance meet and hook up in the very first scene of the book - talk about jumping in with both feet! Ethan is only in town to interview for a job, and he returns home to Iowa a couple days later to wait and see if he’s the chosen applicant. Chance, meanwhile, turns out to be the top dog looking to hire someone, and without meeting any of the candidates, takes his second in command’s suggestion - none other than Chance’s bashful hookup, Ethan!

Upon arrival and introduction, Chance doesn’t immediately recognize Ethan, much to Ethan’s horror. Shortly thereafter, however, he does, and then Ethan is even more upset, certain he’s lost his job. (By the way, this is a theme - Ethan is upset a lot in this book, and Chance is a walking hormone, the stereotypical gay man hooking up with everything in sight that takes his fancy.) But no, Chance still wants Ethan to work there, and sets about securing his place in Ethan’s bed.

Yes, this is a pretty common trope, and that’s because it ordinarily works. It would have worked better in this case, I think, had Ethan not been such a waffler. He had more internal drama than a drag queen at a wig sale, and it reflected itself into nearly all of the scenes. It made it difficult to connect with the character, and while I thought he was adorable in the beginning, by the end I just wanted to strangle him, HEA completely beside the point.

The business aspects are downplayed and the sexy times are up-played, but since Ethan spends a great deal of the book not sleeping with Chance (and waffling about it in his mind), it isn’t particularly erotica, either, just angst. Lots and lots and lots of angst. There were multiple moments that the author could have gone in a different direction and helped to create a stronger connection to her characters, but unfortunately, most of these were missed, and they were a detriment to what could have been a truly great work. This is my first read by this author, so I’ll be giving another book a shot before deciding how I feel about her writing style. I’m granting this three stars - it’s okay. Not great, but okay.

Taking a Chance is a sweet/romantic book. The main character of the book are Chance and Ethan.

Ethan is a sweet, naïve, inexperienced man whereas Chance is extremely experienced playboy who is confident in everything that he does, or so it seems anyway.

Ethan is determined to not let their professional relationship turn to more of a romantic relationship but Chance has other things on his mind.

It is my opinion that Ethan starts out as a small town boy and grows into a man throughout the book. It is nice to see him mature throughout the book and come into his own.

Chance comes off to me as someone who thinks that he should have everything he wants and consequences be damned but he too grows though out the book as becomes a man I admire in the end.

They both have obstacles to overcome through the book to become a couple and eventually they do with a little hurt feelings along the way.

As I said in the beginning this is a nice, sweet, romantic book with lots of hot sex along the way

Good read and will enjoy reading more in the future from Emjay Haze.

DNF at 18%. No rating.

I hate the name-calling between the characters (they're particularly fond of "slut"), the slut-shaming and the sexist comments made by one character were the last nail in the coffin.

Kind of sad, because the first four chapters were great and there was a lot of potential. (Though maybe that potential was more in what my BR-partners and I came up with, guessing how the story would go on, than the actual story.)

~ 2.5 Stars ~

The plot of Taking a Chance had a lot of potential, and after reading the blurb, I was really excited to immerse myself in Ethan and Chance’s story. Unfortunately, a few factors compiled that make it impossible for me to become invested and engaged. In fact, by midway through, I was having a hard time sticking with it at all.

These are my least favorite reviews, because I truly believe there is a readership for every kind of story/book, and my reading preferences definitely aren’t a lot of people’s cup of tea. But it’s my honest review, and I can only give my experience, so here we are. That being said, I have pet peeves and mine happened to be this book’s main focus during the first two-thirds. What is it? Wishy-washy behavior.

This is one of those cases where I think the story could have had quite a bit cut out of it to shorten it substantially, and I would have enjoyed it more than I did. Which is really weird for me, because I generally feel the complete opposite. Why, in this case? Well, for the majority of the book the plot was on repeat. It was the same internal thoughts, over and over again, by both characters, just different locations. My main frustration though—Ethan was wishy-washy with his thoughts and actions. He seriously was one of the most indecisive characters I have ever read—the “I want him, but I can’t have him because he’s my boss and I want to prove myself,” only to turn around and become a pile of goo and allow intimate contact, and then turn around and push Chance away, again, for the same reason. Every. Time. His thoughts were in line with his actions, as in they were back and forth, push and pull. He’d say one thing and then completely go against it with his actions in the next paragraph, sometimes within the next sentence, no follow through or real decisions happening. I’m down for a bit of emotional turmoil and conflict in what to do and what is right, and then doing the opposite. And, I am even okay if it pops up in different scenarios because the character tends to overthink/analyze situations, and it is in line with their personality. However, this particular set of conflicting emotions didn’t change, it was pretty much the same scenario for the first two-thirds of the story, and it just became tiresome.

Chance wasn’t quite as bad, but here and there he had his own contradictory emotions and behaviors that were the same activities over and over again. Same thing, same thoughts, just varying locations with little to no growth.

The other issue was that every guy seemed to flirt, leer, or glare out of jealousy at one—or both—of them. I mean everywhere they went, seriously: every restaurant, every hotel, and every club. Every single time, there was someone there to cause jealousy to fire up. It would have been cool for them to just grow together, ya know? I mean, jealousy and tension are all good, but it got to a point where, as soon as soon as they left on some sort of dinner or to hang out somewhere, I knew there would eventually be someone there creating drama, and I wasn’t disappointed in that expectation. I sort of wish I was.

What did work? I love the whole one-night stand and no names exchanged, turned into boss and subordinate angle. I connected to Chance more than Ethan and liked the whole “player with a soft side” thing going on. Speaking of characters, pretty much my favorite in the book was Brad, as he managed, periodically, to call Chance and Ethan on their BS, and he added a bit of flair.

The last third of the book was the most entertaining for me, and shook things up a bit. They finally stopped the cycle and decided to be together, and additional plot points were introduced which had potential to be pretty cool, adding dimension and improving the overall story for me. Unfortunately, since I never really felt connected to the characters or their relationship by that time (which, in a contemporary romance, is sort of a must for me), it just wasn’t enough.

The potential was there and I had high hopes, but this one didn’t work out for me like I’d anticipated.

Ethan Moore is a recent college graduate looking for job that will get him out of his small town in Iowa. He gets an offer from a small corporation in San Franseco, California. Urged by a friend, Ethan accepts the offer. after the interview Ethan decides to relax by checking out a gay club, something he's not been to a lot of, just to see what all the hype is about. Needless to say he's picked up by the hottest guy there and the two have a unforgettable night together.

Chance Harlow's been burned by a relationship before and it's changed his view on how he wants his relationships to go. When he goes to his favorite night club, he doesn't expect to be smitten by Ethan. He's just out for a one night stand and Ethan is just his type.

When Ethan starts his new job he doesn't expect his boss to be Chance, the guy he had an amazing night with. Likewise, Chance is surprised his new employee is Ethan. Ethan worries he'll be fired whereas Chance can't believe his luck.

I can't say I enjoyed this as much as I thought I would. I found it to be drawn out and repetitive. Ethan trying to resist Chances advances and Chance inability to stop pushing and trying to seduce Ethan was very taxing and a tad annoying. I think 32 chapters was way too long to convey Ethan and Chances feelings for each other.

I can understand that there needed to be build up and indecision conveyed through the characters but I think there was a bit too much. At least half the book was Chance and Ethan having sex because Ethan couldn't resist Chance. The other half being Ethan fighting his feelings for Chance and Chance trying to tantalize Ethan into having a relationship he wasn't even sure he wanted.

I didn't feel Chances feeling were sincere towards Ethan. Being the playboy he was readers got to see just how many boys he had on the hook. I kind of wish Ethan had tried to live a more healthy life since Chance wasn't showing any consideration. I just kind of felt bad for Ethan but at the same time I couldn't help cursing him for doing what he was to himself.

Bradley was a character I wanted to read more about or at the very least see how his love life is faring. Stephan turned up quite a bit and I can't say i wasn't curious.

Taking a Chance by Emjay Haze has the story of two men who never knew how much they needed love in their life till they get it.
Ethan is a recent college graduate. He is going for his first big job. He goes to a gay club to blow off some steam and meets a man and gets a one night stand out of it.
Chance is the kind of guy who works hard and plays hard. He thinks he is going to a bar to blow off steam.
But when fate has other plans will these two be able to take a chance on love?
There is great chemistry in this book. I loved Chance he is intense and a little rough around the edges. Ethan is more the skittish colt type and together they are well worth the read.
When you want a true love story with a twist I suggest this one highly.

Chance and Ethan’s one time sexual adventure becomes the defining moment that has the potential to keep them together if they only let their hearts decide. Chance is a pleasure seeker, and sexually promiscuous while Ethan is a shy man who values ethnics. Two dissimilar characters meet by chance and the rest becomes history. Are they going to survive their cosmic differences? Are they going to overcome their personal morals about working relationships and cross the line? I certainly hoped that their catastrophic mix endured. I would not reveal the outcome. Read it but keep in mind that most of the sexual scenes are graphic and plenty. Ninestar Press provided this ARC, and I'm thankful for the opportunity to review it.

Slut shaming, magic dick that causes instalove & tames the playboy & way to much red light/green light.

The first 4ch started out great & had lots of promise...it quickly went down hill, I should have dnf'd but tortured myself to see if it got back to good, it did not.

I had great hopes for this book. I liked the blurb and hoped it would live up to my expectations and while the book is not badly written, I think it was a bit rushed in some parts and it lacked some character development. I actually liked Ethan, although I think his actions were a bit too ambivalent regarding Chance. The being unable to stay away from Chance but pushing him away and on the next breath being jealous because Chance was being himself, was a tad annoying sometimes. Chance was kind of a jerk at first, but he grew on me. I think of the two of them, he was the one that showed more growth. There was a marked change in him from the start of the book, and it was made gradually, which I loved. Ethan and Chance together were actually pretty good, at least when Ethan allowed Chance to get close to him. They had very good chemistry, and I also liked Brad, he was a great friend to both of them.

All in all, it was a good book, and if you're looking for a sweet, somewhat angsty read with some hot scenes thrown in for good measure, this is a good choice.

Just by reading the blurb for this book , I thought I would enjoy it. The boss angle was good but I found myself wanting more from this story. Chance always seemed full of himself and I thought he pushed himself on Ethan. Ethan came to town for an interview hooked up with chance once, Then he got the job and found out Chance was his boss. Go from there and you tell how the story goes. I wanted more , more story , more conflict and more character development. I thought it fell short for me. The sex scenes were great but that is all they did. Reviewed by Jodi Marinich from Alpha Book Club .

Sounds like a decent enoug plot. I mean, I can work the sexy boss man angle, but the blurb isn't even written enticingly so I'ma have to pass on this one.
